editor's note what keeps you up at night? the derivative of linear functions, or karolina kurkova’s dress to the 2016 met gala, or the boy who lives across the street? or is it the first twenty-seven minutes of footloose or the philosophies of revolutionary wars? whether or not you know what it is, everyone has a certain itch, something that excites them, a reason to live.
as we entered the new year, with people scrambling to pursue their passions on a checklist of resolutions, we thought there was no better time to explore what PASSION means. as you will see, there’s no single definition — passion can be emotional, it can be tactile, it can be downright terrifying. so flip the page and see what keeps us up at night.

My Mother’s Cooking Destiny Lang
The scent of freshly baked bread in the air,
The sight of my mother with her tied-back hair.
Turning around, she smiled at me.
The sight I’ve always loved to see.
Digging into my plate of spaghetti,
Quietly, I watched her work efficiently.
Cracking the eggs, sifting the flour.
She mixed her batter in under an hour.
“Aren’t you sore? Is it a bore?
Is it an endless and tiring chore?”
I asked her as I wiped my plate dry,
Not expecting my mother’s reply.
“I love to cook. I love to bake.
Go pursue your passions if they are not fake.
Others may look, others may judge.
Do what you love, and here — have some fudge!”
Her words filled my mind,
Words so wise and kind.
Words I’ll keep in my case,
A memory I’ll never erase.
Sometime in the distant future,
I’ll remember my dear mother.
Missing her cooking, missing her kindness,
Leaving me with a small pang of sadness.

a derelict world around her, festering with the cessation of existence precisely fitting of her preference.
no, she was not always like this. once, long ago, she was a Lady, untainted by the duress of extraterrestrial corruption.
a Lady of the utmost elegance, her visage penetrated, permeated so profoundly but of course, she upheld her loyalty to her Gentleman.
the Death manifests itself within the Gentleman, however — the Gentleman now swings from the sturdiest of oak branches. the Lady knew this, now, her cheeks wet but teeth flashing.
the Lady lets her hair down, finally— knife in one, shovel in the other now, she wishes to comfort herself with the Death, finally—
the Gentleman sleeping so soundly, dreaming of worlds beyond his own interrupted by his Lady, in an overzealous act of insanity where have her eyes gone?

Passion for Concerts Maeg Lorey
Concerts give you a much greater and realer experience than listening to songs through your headphones. You have the opportunity to come together and dance with people who share the same interest in music with you...
...You’re able to connect with the artists behind your favourite songs. You get to live in the moment. This is why my love for concerts stays immense.
