editors note shorts are swapped for sweaters as we swing into the school year. the leaves start to blush, the sun sets sneakily while our backs are turned, and our stress steeps itself into steaming mugs of tea and warm milk. autumn is a period of shift, and we kiss summer goodbye to prepare for winter. as we come into our third (!!!) year as a club, we want to reflect on the small beauties in transition. everything changes eventually, but what happens in the process? in this issue, we take a moment to put a pause on our busy lives, and breathe: what about the sweaters and leaves and suns? how do they shift? haley chung & danielle graham jnb lit magazine’s co editors-in-chief 11/15/18 23:59.

I can hurt, With a blade in hand. I can deeply wound, And change how you see the land. I can heal, With a caressing stroke. Repair a heart, That had once broke. I am eternal, I am brief. I am joy, I am grief. I can be excitement and fire, Or neutral and cold. I can be a shrug off the shoulder, Or I can be bold. So what exactly am I? Some would say a gift. But regardless so, I am the shift. The change in everything around you. Forever entwined within your soul.

Autumn’s Spell
trinity lu
There is a certain kind of magic To the way She walks. Winter storms in, Spring tiptoes, Summer has a habit of ambling on. But Autumn? She saunters. She covers the pavement with bright colours, Washes away the last snippets of summer with cool, fresh showers Fills the air with the sweet perfume of harvest and decay. Her skirts brush over the land, Her paints sweep the sky She’s an artist, a poet, a connoisseur; Whispering soft words in the wind Earning hearts with festivals and bonfires Tipping treats into your outstretched hands We revel in the celebrations, rejoice in her wake; There is a certain kind of magic To the way She walks.

My Reflection Destiny Lang
Smiling, I walked out the hair salon Look, my reflection A short hairstyle and my long hair gone Oh, looking at my reflection Dance my way home in joy and glee Look, my reflection Tell my mother over honey and tea Oh, looking at my reflection “I love men and women equally,” Look, my reflection “ ‘Non-binary’, that is who I see.” when I’m Looking at my reflection She hugged me warmly, I know she cares Look, my reflection In her eyes I could see her tears, when I’m Looking at my reflection “I am proud of you, my offspring,” Look, my reflection I began to cry and my heart wants to sing, when I’m Looking at my reflection

Dance of Folds
Rosanna Tsang
Nimble fingers, Sore thumbs. Listen to the crinkle of the paper, And the creasing of the folds, Whilst breathing wishes into every step. Instructions were meaningless; They were known by heart. Day by day, Continuing to fold. Blues, Greens, Purples, Patterns. Set a goal, Seemingly impossible to succeed on your own. Gather your materials. Spread the word. Form a team, And get to work.

The Silver Sword Destiny Lang
A young maiden walked in the woods alone, Searching for words that were written in stone. Spotting some poetry carved on a rock, Her eyes widened in a state of great shock. There the sword stood, stuck in the ground, A rare treasure she had just found. The sleek design she strongly adored, Behold! She raised up her silver sword. From her back she sprouted her wings, Donned a crown of the king of kings. Down swooped on her a flight of white doves, Adorned her hair with flowers she loves. She reached for the sky, and heard angels cry: “Please do not be shy, spread your wings and fly! Grasping her sword tight, taking her one chance, Embracing the light, she began to dance.
