SNAP! SNAP! SNAP! j.n. burnett's literary magazine club

ft. works from the burnett student body

vol. 3 | issue 3

april 2019

editor's note SNAP is quick, it’s angry, it’s a word with jagged edges that screech. it’s reminiscent of childhood peas doused in tangy ranch sauce. it’s simultaneously a sound, a judgement, a feeling. in other words, SNAP is whatever you think it means because it doesn’t have a single definition.

this is a philosophy we always try to follow at jnb lit magazine — finding creativity in interpretation. as we round off the year, we thought we’d choose a theme that would allow our artists to do just that. so join us as we explore what snap means to us.

A Simple Snap Maeg Lorey She’s sorry she snapped at you. Her emotional sieve lacks the ability to filter her anger. She’s capable of spilling just as much fury as love. Her bottle is missing its cap. She’s as brittle as a tree branch weakened by the wind. Her patience cracks little by little, eventually slumping to the ground. She fills the deep wounds with her salty tears. Her head cracks open and the weight flows in. But at the end of the day, She revises and turns on her mood switch. Her appreciation for you shines through even the dirtiest glass. She cancels her daily subscription of negativity. Her trust in you rises with the warmth of the oven. She’s built like a sunflower. Her love for you continues to grow throughout the darkness. Again, she’s sorry she snapped at you.

dear, how is it that you do not know the way your words crack on my face and slice me wide open is the wetness I find in the torn edges of these wounds a lingering remnant of your bitter lips you’ll forgive me I’m a bit angry the way your pain and I know you are in pain digs into my pain I can no longer tell which is which it strains all the fissures in my soul and the black river crawls through the cracks frothing with rage

I hold this whip in my hand its leather smooth and worn and I know if I snap back —

Your Majesty anna lee I wore my failure as a crown The bedrock of my throne was composed of foolishness Allowed my doubt to become my sword My two-headed snake to obey my word My judgement was flawed no more Fear is the curtain hiding my ambition Tears are my tools to summon empathy My honesty shall never be the truth Lies shall pool out of my blood, clotting my veins Arrogance will be my medication Listen to impatience guard the tower Of which my trust resides The only key buried along with my humanity Greed will lead me to wealth and power Control is never freely given I shall grasp it by the throat Choke it till violet is shown Then before I take my throne, I bow I will allow pain to become my king Fear me Mock me Loathe me Long Live the Queen
