Accolade Progressive Farmer magazine named Barren County the No. 1 Best Place to Live in Rural America in 2007.
Barren County is an area rich in natural resources, community spirit and tradition. The city of Glasgow, the county seat, is a perfect portrait of an American hometown with historic homes and buildings, museums, a town square and a Civil War fort. Families are attracted to this region because of the small-town feel it offers, the recreational opportunities and the affordability of land and homes. Barren County is also conveniently located between Nashville, Tenn., and Louisville, and in Kentucky’s tourism region known as “Caves, Lakes and Corvettes.” The opportunities for sports and recreation in Barren County are seemingly endless. Various parks, including the Barren River Lake State Resort Park, offer hiking, biking, fishing and camping. Several large cave systems, such as Diamond Caverns and Mammoth Cave, offer year-round exploration. Sports leagues for children and adults allow residents to engage in friendly competition, and events, like the Glasgow Highland Games, car shows, concerts and art and craft shows are held annually. Beyond entertainment, Barren County features the best in small-town living. Schools here are highly praised. Western Kentucky University offers a Glasgow campus and Bowling Green Technical College enables area residents to earn a degree or certificate in eight industrial-maintenance fields. The community’s economy is anchored in agriculture, but growing in other fields such as manufacturing and science technology. You’ll find an authentic experience in Glasgow and Barren County. The following pages will give you a glimpse of some of the great things this community has to offer.

T
here’s always a reason to celebrate in Glasgow and Barren County. Community members gather several times throughout the year for annual festivals and events that draw spectators from near and far. These events not only provide entertainment, but also unite residents and showcase the people and beauty of the county. Glasgow Highland Games In May and June, Glasgow residents celebrate the region’s ties to Scotland during the Glasgow Highland Games. The three-day event attracts nearly 10,000 people and takes place at Barren River Lake State Resort Park. A Glasgow tradition since 1986, it has been named a Top 10 Summer Event by the Kentucky Tourism Council. “Probably the most common bond shared is a sense of belonging – a sense of family,” says Maureen Frazer Hendrick, executive secretary for the Glasgow Highland Games. “It’s one of the happiest places to be every year. About 65 percent of Barren County has Scottish heritage. I am one of 10 children, and whether you’re an only child or one of 18, as soon as you get to the Games field, you feel like you belong there.”

Celebrate Independence Day
Downtown Glasgow’s Fourth of July Concert on the Square attracts more than 3,500 people and includes an appearance by Broadway the Clown, who performs magic tricks for kids.
At the Glasgow Highland Games, spectators can try their hand in the haggis and caber toss competitions, and there is live Scottish music, children’s activities, Scottish clan tents, a Tartan Ball, a Celtic rock concert and a country ham breakfast. Fourth of July Concert on the Square When July rolls around, more than 3,500 Glasgow residents converge on the courthouse lawn for the annual Fourth of July Concert on the Square. The impressive musical celebration began in 1999 and features either the Louisville Orchestra or The Nashville Symphony along with local bands playing patriotic and classical music. “The concert is special not only because it is a unique opportunity for a community of our size, but also because it is free of charge, presented as a gift to the community from local donors,” says Samuel Dickinson, chairman of the Concert on the Square Committee. “The sponsor list is made up of a great group of 10

community-minded companies and individuals.” The concert is held the weekend nearest to July 4. In addition to patriotic music, local first responders and National Guard members are honored, a clown entertains the children and vendors sell food. Cruise Into Fall Car Show Car enthusiasts descend on downtown Glasgow on the second Saturday in October each year for the Glasgow Renaissance-Main Street Cruise Into Fall Car Show. A tradition since 2000, the show had more than 350 exhibitors in 2012, including classic cars, trucks, street rods, motorcycles and more. “It’s a great, laid-back atmosphere,” says Becky Barrick, co-chair of the Cruise Into Fall Car Show. “People come together and visit, and we have lots of groups come from other towns and states. The Kiwanis Club and restaurants around the square sell food, and we give away door prizes and awards in several categories.” At 3 p.m., exhibitors line up for a cruise while spectators look on.
“It’s quite spectacular to see so many wonderful vehicles driving together,” Barrick says. “People especially love seeing the kind of car they once had as a teenager. Harvest of History Tour In September, the South Central Kentucky Cultural Center presents its annual Harvest of History Tour at Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Costumed actors bring history to life by portraying Barren County historical figures who are buried in the cemetery including war heroes, teachers and even a farmer who cared for horses owned by the Jesse James gang. by Jessica Mozo THINGS TO

History is Preserved Downtown Downtown Glasgow’s historic district includes affordable homes with beautiful architecture. Residents can take advantage of proximity to restaurants, entertainment venues and more.

H
ome buyers can choose from a wide range of housing options in Glasgow/Barren County, where historic homes are on the market alongside custom-built beauties and comfortable condominiums.
And with a 2012 median home price of just $97,000, Barren County homes are highly affordable, too. Historic Homes For those interested in owning a piece of Barren County history, Glasgow’s historic district is the place to be. The district, located near downtown Glasgow, consists of 100-plus-year-old saltbox and traditional homes, many with gracious columned porches. Beth Hinkley, an agent with third-generation family brokerage Elmore Real Estate, says the historic district offers a good mix of fixer-uppers and remodeled homes, so buyers can find options at all price points.

“Auctions and estate sales are very popular in the area for handling estates in a timely fashion, so that offers additional opportunity for good deals,” Hinkley says. Country Club Comforts For buyers who want a little more elbow room, homes in and around the Glasgow Golf & Country Club are often a good fit. The private club was built in the 1970s and has an 18-hole course, pro shop, swimming pool, tennis courts and children’s programs. Prices for homes at the club average around $275,000: high for the county, but a good value compared to similar properties nationwide. Hinkley says that many families find the amenities and lifestyle worth the investment. But the club isn’t just for families or those investing in estates. It is also home to the county’s only condominium development, which is ideal for young professionals or retirees looking to downsize. Hinkley says a good alternative to the club is Steeplechase, an adjacent subdivision. The neighborhood offers lots for custom homes.
Lakeside Living Lots are also available at Barren River Lake, about 15 miles south of Glasgow. Created by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1964, the 10,100-acre lake has planned subdivisions as well as the beautiful Barren River Lake State Resort Park. Bob and Carol Shoop moved to Barren River Lake from Vancouver, Wash., in 2012. The couple retired here after researching lakefront properties throughout the state. The couple chose Barren County and their lakeside property for a variety of reasons, including the county’s vibrant arts scene, highquality health care, easy access to I-65 and I-24, and their subdivision’s good roads and tidy appearance. But the people were what really clinched the deal – and Bob Shoop says that’s true whether they’re at home on the lake or out and about anywhere in Barren County. “Everybody we’ve met is just friendly and polite,” he says. “We enjoy the people here, and that really makes a difference in a community.” by Kathryn Royster

Another recent accomplishment occurred in 2012 when a partnership between Walmart and T.J. Health Partners LLC resulted in The Clinic at Walmart, which is open daily in Glasgow. The hospital is an affiliate of Planetree, where a holistic approach to medicine encourages healing in all dimensions. T.J. Samson is one of fewer than 100 hospitals in the nation – and the first in Kentucky – to have officially adopted the Planetree model.

business: overview
Business With Roots
Glasgow’s economy is fueled by agriculture and manufacturing
Business Spotlight American Engineers Inc.
Glasgow and Barren County’s economy has long been fueled by agriculture, but other industries have also put down roots in the region. Food and automotive manufacturing provide additional sources of employment, as do construction, transportation and service-related industries. Local businesses praise Barren County for its solid infrastructure and business environment. Businesses also appreciate Barren County’s central location, which provides easy access to markets in the Southeast and Midwest. Agriculture Barren County’s rolling countryside and wide-open spaces have made it a prime spot for agriculture, and despite its nickname “the Barrens,” it is full of fertile farmland. The county is the state’s top producer of beef and dairy cattle, alfalfa hay, soybeans and burley tobacco. It was named the Best Place to Live in Rural America by The Progressive Farmer magazine. The Barren County Cooperative Extension Service provides educational opportunities for area farmers to learn the newest agricultural methods. Many Barren County producers also incorporate agritourism into their operations, inviting visitors to tour their farms and learn about their products. Kenny’s Farmhouse Cheese, for example, hosts school groups and tourists at its Austin farm and demonstrates how cheese is made. Bluegrass Dairy & Food Bluegrass Dairy & Food LLC employs about 100 workers in Glasgow, and the company makes five varieties of cheese, which are sent to its Springfield plant to be converted into cheese powders. Major snack food manufacturers
use the cheese powders to flavor products such as chips, crackers, croutons and popcorn. Bluegrass Dairy & Food also manufactures nonfat dry milk for use in groceries, bakeries and ice cream, as well as ice cream blends. Automotive Manufacturing Numerous manufacturers cater to the automotive industry, which employs more than 1,700 people in Barren County. Akebono Brake Corp. makes vehicle brake systems and employs about 540 workers. ACK Controls Inc. manufactures automotive control cables and has about 320 employees. Nemak Kentucky produces die-cast aluminum automotive parts with its 240 employees, and Dana Corp. makes heavy-duty truck axles and brakes, employing about 215 workers. RR Donnelley is another big contributor to the local economy. The company provides offset printing, computer typesetting, saddle stitch and perfect binding services for publishers and employs about 1,100 in Glasgow. Downtown Glasgow Glasgow’s historic downtown has seen lots of positive changes in recent years, thanks to the community’s support for preservation. A citizens’ committee raised money to restore the Plaza Theatre, and grants are being acquired to improve and renovate the facades of several businesses. New lights and a new clock were installed downtown to fit the city’s character, and murals are being painted on the backsides of buildings. The city is also working on a streetscape project to improve sidewalks, curbs, gutters and landscaping downtown. by Jessica Mozo

Window of
Opportunity Barren County is committed to economic development
I
t isn’t uncommon for local politicians and staff at the Glasgow/Barren County Chamber of Commerce to stop by manufacturing plants and small businesses and ask how they can help. Businesses in Barren County receive constant support from local leaders. The community as a whole is committed to helping the economy thrive. That’s really the icing on the cake because Barren County offers a central location in the U.S., an educated and a motivated workforce, shovel-ready work sites, and excellent quality of life. Community Readiness Barren County was certified by the Kentucky Workforce Investment Board as a “work-ready community in progress” in 2012. Through a stringent application process, the county proved its commitment to education and economic development, preparing the workforce for present and future jobs. “Current and potential employers want to know about your workforce,” says Dan Iacconi, executive director of the Industrial Development Economic Authority (IDEA). “Being certified answers many of their questions. We are serious about meeting workforce needs.”
Diverse Workforce Joe Hembree, manager of Nemak Kentucky, a producer of high-pressure die casts for automotive manufacturers, says a big part of the company’s success is because of the workforce Barren County has provided. Formerly J.L. French Automotive Castings, Nemak Kentucky operates out of two plants with 400 employees and has seen sales around $100 million a year. Hembree, a 2010 transplant from Detroit, is proud of his new home and its workforce. He’s forecasting even greater growth for Nemak in the coming years. “These are some of the best people I’ve ever worked with in my entire life,” Hembree says. He’s equally impressed with local leadership, often seeing Glasgow Mayor Rhonda Trautman stopping by the plant to see how things are going. The mayor’s platform is “Glasgow is open for business.” The chamber staff is also in tune with business needs in the community. l i va b i l i t y. c o m /g l a s g o w

Manufacturing Heats Up
Felker Brothers Corp. manufactures piping products and fabricated piping systems.

Employees at Nemak Kentucky in Glasgow produce engine and transmission components, including high-pressure die casts. The company employs approximately 400 people in the area.
“The people at the chamber are a quick phone call away,” Hembree says, “to find us a contact when we’re looking for local suppliers.” IDEA’s Iacconi, who relocated to Glasgow from Pittsburgh in 1993, says there’s a strong service sector and high concentration of manufacturing in the region. “With our workforce that is diverse and well-trained, we want to attract manufacturing, agriculture, pharmaceutical [companies] and the health-care sector,” he says. “One thing you hear over and over is the excitement about moving the community forward in economic development.” Expansions increase While the community readily welcomes new businesses, existing industries provide the backbone of the local economy. Many of them have expanded within the last few years, including Akebono Brake, Felker Brothers Corp., Innovative Manufacturing Services Inc., Med-Care Pharmacy and SpanTech. When the city’s two industrial parks reached capacity, IDEA constructed a third on 300 acres in the northwestern city limits. In spring 2012 Fortis Manufacturing was up and running in Highland Glen Industrial Park. A division of Beta Tech out of Barrie, Ontario, Fortis is a production facility for automotive metal stamping, with 14 full-time employees. Omnicare is slated to open a facility in Highland Glen in late 2013 or early ’14, to provide packaging and distribution for the Cincinnati-based pharmaceutical services company. Two other lots in the park have been leveled and graded, and are pad-ready for new buildings. by Kathie Stamps by staff photographer Learn more about Glasgow/Barren County’s business climate and workforce at livability. com/glasgow/ky/business.

business: Chamber Report
It’s Good to Stay Busy Chamber backs numerous events Ernie Myers says all chambers back their business community, but a chamber really defines itself by projects that are seen by the public. Myers is executive vice president of the Glasgow/Barren County Chamber of Commerce, and the organization sponsors community events. Perhaps the largest is the Glasgow/Barren County Christmas Nighttime Parade, which is one of the largest in Kentucky. “We encourage large and small local businesses, organizations and civic groups to get involved, and many do,” Myers says. The chamber also puts together four quarterly Membership Breakfasts, with each event having a topical theme. Myers says the most attended is in January at the annual State of the City and County.
“Barren County Judge/ Executive Davie Greer speaks on the county’s behalf, while Glasgow Mayor Rhonda Trautman talks about the present and future of the city,” he says.
Myers points out that the Glasgow/Barren County Chamber is also a big backer of a South Central Kentucky Business Expo each February, and the annual Glasgow Highland Games in June. “And beginning in June 2013, because Barren County remains big in agriculture with its No. 1 ranking in Kentucky for milk, beef and tobacco production, the chamber is organizing an inaugural Barren County Ag Festival,” he says. Myers adds that the Glasgow/ Barren County Tourist Commission shares the chamber building on the downtown Public Square, and the chamber helps organize events sponsored by the commission such as the Concert on the Square and the Glasgow Highland Games. by Kevin Litwin
The Ernie Awards Another large event is the Glasgow/Barren County Chamber Dinner & Awards Banquet, which presents awards for Citizen of the Year, Farmer of the Year, and Ernie Awards for accomplishments in the business community. Annual Ernie Awards are presented to individuals or groups in the community who have “earned” their award by being recognized by their peers on a state or national level as a result of outstanding leadership.
