Three Cities, One Goal

Take It Outside Maury County is known for its rolling hills, scenic views and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. The Duck River flows freely through Maury County and is home to more than 100 species of fish. Another main attraction, Stillhouse Hollow Falls, is a 90-acre area located southwest of Columbia and northeast of Summertown that features a cascading 75-foot waterfall. This region is also home to one of the largest caves in Tennessee – Southport Saltpeter Cave in Culleoka.

The three cities of Maury County have distinct personalities, but they share a common bond: a commitment to maintaining a sense of community. Columbia, the county seat and largest city, has a downtown shopping district with specialty boutiques and restaurants. Historic sites such as The Athenaeum and the ancestral home of 11th U.S. President James K. Polk lend a sense of history to the district. Mount Pleasant, incorporated in 1824, is a city of about 5,000 residents that enjoys its small-town feel. Mount Pleasant was once known for immense phosphate reserves, and that history is detailed today at the Mount Pleasant Phosphate Museum. Spring Hill is a bedroom community of 26,230 residents. This fast-growing city straddles the Maury and Williamson county lines, and it falls within the jurisdiction of two progressive county governments. Maury County, with the help of its cities, is working on a comprehensive plan for growth.

Southern Fried Fun Most people like a good party and Maury County throws a great one to kick off each fall season. The annual Southern Fried Festival takes place on the last weekend in September, and has been going strong since 1995. The festivities all take place in the downtown public square in Columbia and on the lawn of the Maury County Courthouse. Activities include an arts and crafts fair, a kids’ zone and big name entertainment.

Fostering Community Life in Mount Pleasant lives up to the city’s name, and some family friendly events are helping to foster that Mayberry vibe. To help bring this community of 5,000 together, the city recently started showing free movies and some football games on a giant inflatable screen downtown on the square. One of the most popular community events is the farmers market, which takes place during the summer in the City Hall parking lot. Another popular event is an annual Scarecrow Festival, held in the fall in conjunction with the Columbia Cycling Club’s Scarecrow Century 100-mile bike race.

The Club Scene Playing through? Maury County has several nice golf courses to suit any skill level. Columbia is home to Stoneybrook Golf Course, a par-72 public course that has recently undergone several upgrades. The city is also home to the private 18-hole, par-72 Graymere Country Club course that measures 6,314 yards. In Mount Pleasant, the nine-hole Mount Pleasant Country Club is a semi-private course on Enterprise Road. Spring Hill is home to King’s Creek Golf Club, a public course designed by Arnold Palmer that opened in June 2006.

Preservation of historic buildings honors the past

hen Darrell Sharp saw that the historic Columbia Carriage House was for sale, he jumped at the chance to own it. “I’ve always loved the mystery of old buildings and what used to be here,” Sharp says. “I liked the Carriage House’s location in the heart of downtown, and it had a quaint, quirky look to it. Its history goes back to the late 1800s.” Sharp bought the building in June 2009, spent two months restoring it, and opened it as a florist shop in September. He is one of several Maury County residents dedicated to preserving the county’s history through its antebellum homes and buildings. The county is home to numerous homes and historic sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and its dedication to preserving that heritage has earned it the nickname the “Antebellum Homes Capital of Tennessee.” “Maury County has made huge progress with historic preservation,” Sharp says. “We can’t rebuild these buildings, and if we don’t save them, we lose our Southern charm.” The James K. Polk Ancestral Home in Columbia is another historic gem. It has been the main historic site dedicated to the 11th president of the United States since 1929. In 2009, the James K. Polk Memorial Association renovated an

1882 church near the Polk Home and turned it into the Polk Presidential Hall, a museum gallery that hosts changing exhibitions and educational programs. “Polk Presidential Hall opened in May 2009 with an original exhibition on the three U.S. presidents from Tennessee – Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk and Andrew Johnson,” says John Holtzapple, director of the James K. Polk Ancestral Home. “Our current exhibition focuses on Dick Poynor, an enslaved craftsman in early 19th-century Tennessee who bought his freedom by making chairs. Decorative arts historians and collectors now regard Poynor chairs as excellent examples of early Tennessee furniture.” From April through June 2010, Polk Presidential Hall will host “The White House Garden,” a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution and the White House Historical Association. When renovating the 1882 church, officials from the Polk Home were careful to preserve its character and architectural features. Likewise, Sharp was intent on preserving the original features of the Carriage House. “Inside, it had 1970s-style paneling, and when we tore that down, we found the original rock foundation for the Carriage House,” he says. “We even found a water spigot in the corner. We kept those original rock walls exposed and left the spigot where it was. It’s such

a neat little building.” The Carriage House has been a florist shop since 1978, but a century before, it was used as servants’ quarters and a pantry. “In the 1930s, it housed the first ambu lance service in Columbia,” Sharp says. The Columbia Athenaeum has a storied history as well. From 1852 until 1904, it flourished as a school for girls, where young women learned subjects such as world history, physics, calculus and English literature. The building is admired for its Moorish-Gothic architecture and hosts an annual weeklong Girls’ School where young girls dress in 1861 clothing and take classes that were offered when the Athenaeum was in operation. “The Athenaeum was one of the only schools of its time that taught science to females,” Sharp says. Other antebellum structures in Maury County include Rippavilla Plantation, Elm Springs (National Headquarters of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Oaklawn, Mayes Place in downtown Columbia, Rattle and Snap Plantation, Hamilton Place, St. Johns Church and Ferguson Hall. “It’s important for people to know the history of our buildings and to preserve the integrity of the past,” Sharp says. “By honoring our past, we’re anchoring our future.”

A Farms find new life as agritourism destinations

Story By jessica mozo Photography By Brian Mccord

cenic farmland is one of Maury County’s many charms, and several area farms are promoting themselves as agritourism destinations with hayrides, corn mazes and other family friendly attractions. “Many people don’t have access to a farm, so visiting one is a new experience that’s fun and educational,” says Thelma Ring, who owns Ring Farm in Columbia with her husband, Johnny. “I love seeing excitement in the children’s eyes when they learn about milking a cow and see how corn and cotton grow. I’ve been amazed at how much the parents learn, too.” The Rings have lived on their farm for 35 years and opened it to the public five years ago. They offer summer day camps in June, and the farm’s picnic pavilion and fire pits are rented year-round for cookouts, family reunions and birthday parties. But the farm’s busiest season by far is fall

when they entertain visitors with a 10-acre corn maze, a half-acre cotton maze, two 40-foot slides, a hayride, a pumpkin patch and the ever-popular corn cannon. “The corn cannon works with air pressure and shoots an ear of corn at a target,” Ring says. “It’s more about luck than anything, but it can be very addictive when you get a bunch of men out there. The women are usually better, to tell you the truth.” Ring uses the corn maze to teach kids about Tennessee history. “I focused on Rutherford County in 2009. The corn maze was a map of the county, and the kids had to locate 31 sites in the maze,” she says. “When they found it, they read the history of that site and discovered little-known facts that are really interesting.” Charles and Gail Pigg of Santa Fe also open their farm to the public, but its appeal is quite different. The farm has been in the Pigg family

for more than a century is home to the old Pigg School House, which served the community from 1884 until 1920. “The school house was located about a fourth of a mile from our farm, and we used to visit it because Charles’ father went to school there,” Gail Pigg says. “It had no flooring and was about to fall down, and we wanted to buy it. The owner decided to give it to us, so we moved it here and restored it.” The Piggs were able to save the school’s outside walls, blackboards, and the bell atop the building, but they had to put in a new floor and roof. An old 12

school desk holds pencils in an 1858 jar, a lunch pail, old school books and a wooden paddle, and the original blackboards still have writings from former teachers. “It’s cute.” Gail Pigg says. “Tour buses come by, and we’ve had class reunions and senior citizens meetings there. I even had my 50th high school class reunion in it.” Charles and Gail Pigg graduated from Santa Fe High School in 1956 and 1957. They married in 1958 and purchased the farm from Charles Pigg’s family in 1961.

“We’re working on building a log cabin near the school house and Charles plans to build a small log church out there, too,” Gail says. “We don’t take vacations – instead we work on this project. We don’t do it for money. We do it to preserve history and have fun.” Arugula’s Star of Neal Family Farms in Columbia hosts a farm tour and dinner in the fall that attracted 130 participants in 2009. Agriculture program. “We raise 130 types of fruits and vegetables, focusing on heirloom varieties and items not available in stores,” says Matthew Neal, who owns the farm with his wife, Allison. “We sell directly to area families. They get fresh produce every week that’s been picked a day or two before it’s delivered.” Other local agritourism destinations include Rippavilla Plantation’s annual corn maze, farmers markets in Spring Hill and Columbia, and the Middle Tennessee Research and Education Center in Spring Hill.

Mule M Story By Carol cowan Photography By jeffrey s. otto

L

exington raises racehorses and Shelbyville turns out Tennessee Walking Horses, but Columbia and Maury County have been majoring in mules for nearly 200 years. The area is the Mule Capital of the World, thanks to its rich history as a mule-trading center and Mule Day, an annual celebration of the hard-working farm animal. The springtime mule show and sale that started here in the early 1800s – formerly called First Monday and Breeders Day – became for a time one of the largest livestock markets in the world. In 1934, the addition of a Mule Day parade lent the sale a festive atmosphere. The original Mule Day eventually went away for a time, but the Maury County Bridle and Saddle Club brought it back to life in 1974. Today it takes place at Maury County Park during the weekend before the first Monday in April. “Mule Day has since grown from a small-town festival to one of the premier events in the Southeast,” says Harvey Spann, who has been bringing his own mules to the show since its revival 35 years ago. Spann also serves as Mule Day office manager and camping director. The four-day festival includes a range of competitive events and exhibitions along with arts and crafts, a liars’ contest, a beauty pageant, square dancing and children’s activities. “I think people take pride in it because it puts us on the map,” Spann continues. “We’ve been raising mules here since before World War I.” Festival attendance estimates range from 150,000 to 300,000 visitors annually. Visitors come from almost every state and several countries, pumping more than $15 million into the local economy.

aury County’s diverse economy allows it to weather tough economic times, and many niche businesses have been growing and prospering. That’s the case with two local manufacturers – WireMasters Inc. and Columbia Machine Works Inc. – that are turning out their products in steadily growing numbers. WireMasters Inc., owned by David and Debra Hill, manufactures and ships precision-made, strong cable harnesses that go into the electronic controls on commercial airplanes, military planes and military weapons such as missiles, tanks and ships. The company was founded and established in 1988 in Franklin, and David Hill went to work for WireMasters in 1991. After being with the company for 10 years, he purchased the company in 2001. That same year, the company had

15 employees and annual sales of less than $1 million. Today, WireMasters has 93 employees and sales of $45 million to $50 million annually, and a yearly payroll of $10 million. “I’m an aggressive businessman who hires hard-working, intelligent employees who enjoy the fact that many of our jobs involve contracts with the United States government,” Hill says. “I was born and raised in Maury County, so I hire mostly Maury County residents. We have a great workforce in place.” When Hill purchased the company in 2001, he wanted to eventually move the entire operation from Williamson County to neighboring Maury County. That became a reality in 2007 when he relocated to the current site in northern Columbia. Hill says the company prides itself on service. Callers will always reach a live person rather than an automated

service and WireMasters completes all of its jobs prior to deadline. “As for our products, we manufacture mill wire cable to military specifications, and our cables must meet cold and heat tolerances, plus hydraulic fluids must perform through any kinds of stresses,” Hill says. “We deal with global companies such as Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, but our cables also go into small private airplanes that fly out of Maury Regional Airport, and even hobby airplanes.” Another Maury County business success story is Columbia Machine Works Inc., which rebuilds fuel tanks for U.S. barges in order to equip the tanks with double hulls. Those double hulls meet new federal requirements to help prevent oil spills. John K. Langsdon started the company in 1927, and today Columbia Machine Works is owned and operated

by brothers Jimmy and John K. Langsdon III. “Our building has some of the largest machine tools found anywhere in Middle Tennessee, and we have two full-time mechanical engineers on staff to oversee all of our projects,” Jimmy Langsdon says. “Our company manufactures a lot of parts for the steel industry, with those parts ultimately going into barges, tug boats and tow boats.” He says even in these difficult economic times, Columbia Machine Works has remained busy and is prospering. “We have an excellent workforce of 68 employees, many of whom have been with the company for a good number of years,” Jimmy Langsdon says. “This kind of business is always interesting and we never know what challenge the next day will bring.” M au r y C o u n t y

singles in baseball, he says, and they deserve the same promotion as nationally known retailers and restaurants. “The Retail Council was established in 2009 to place more emphasis on the retail component in Maury County,” Church says. “One program we have initiated is a Make It Maury campaign, which arose from a trip to Marion, Ind., that several Alliance officials took in 2009.” Church says Marion has become well

known in economic development circles for successfully trumpeting new stores, and it does well in attracting niche businesses to town. That’s what Maury Alliance has started to do. “For example, in late 2009 a new business called Yip Yap pet grooming opened in Maury County, so we put a banner on their building that said, ‘Yip Yap Makes It Maury.’ We kept that banner hanging for a few weeks,” he says. “That’s how the Alliance plans to promote businesses from now on. Whether a SuperTarget moves into Spring Hill, or a mom-and-pop shop moves into Columbia, or a tiny store with two employees opens in Mt. Pleasant, we will announce that news better than we ever have before.” Maury Alliance Chairman Randy Wilmore says the Make It Maury campaign is also encouraging residents to spend more shopping dollars locally. “People from Giles, Marshall, Hickman, Lewis and Lawrence counties are coming to shop in Maury County,” Wilmore says. “But many Maury County residents are going to Franklin and Nashville to shop, perhaps thinking that things are bigger and better there. That’s where our Retail Council must do a better job promoting our own county.” Wilmore says Maury County really has everything a consumer could want, and keeping the sales tax dollars here would help to keep local jobs. “We want people to realize that wherever they decide to shop, it will affect their own community,” he says. – Kevin Litwin

aury County is home to many great restaurants that offer a down-home atmosphere reminiscent of a simpler time. One well-known spot is Campbell Station Country Store & Restaurant, owned by Carlene Landers. This quaint home-cooking restaurant is tucked away in a remote part of Culleoka, but customers drive here from as far away as Nashville, Franklin and Pulaski. Campbell Station Country Store & Restaurant opened in 2004 in a 100-year-old grocery store, and the popular place has been featured on Tennessee Crossroads and in several newspaper articles. It seats 110 people

and serves traditional Southern dishes such as steaks, fried pies, frog legs, hand-cut ribeye, catfish and turnip greens. “The restaurant is located in an old country store building where I still sell gasoline, candy bars and cold drinks, but we are mostly known for the restaurant,” Landers says. “My place is always busy, even though we are certainly off the beaten path.” Campbell Station is located just off Highway 373 and is about eight miles from Interstate 65. “It’s just word of mouth that has made this place such a success, along with good food,” she says. “People these

days still enjoy real home cooking, and I make everything from scratch. All my dishes are as fresh as they can be.” Another popular place is Williamsport Market and Deli, a small, welcoming grocery that offers a daily menu including breakfast, lunch specials, catfish on Fridays and Sunday plate lunches. The venue also puts on a live music performance series with a set dinner menu of hamburger steak, cheeseburger meals, chicken tenders or salad and homemade cobbler. Other favorites include Marcy Jo’s Mealhouse & Bakery, a country cafe in Pottsville that draws crowds from miles around, Nett’s at Bethel and Fly General Store in Santa Fe. – Kevin Litwin

Education

Beyond the Classroom Columbia Central and CSCC offer TOP-Notch opportunities

M

aury County students of all ages have access to nationally renowned educational programs in its public schools, plus affordable, quality programs offered by Columbia State Community College, which has seen a significant spike in enrollment recently.

Columbia State Community College Columbia State Community College offers excellent education at an affordable price – a message the school is trumpeting. Thousands of students are hearing that message loud and clear. For the fall 2009 semester, enrollment at Columbia State peaked at a record 5,581 students – a 17 percent increase over the previous year’s enrollment figure of 4,767. “Especially in these difficult economic times, students need higher education, and they can complete their first two years of college at a much lower price at Columbia State compared to most universities,” says Paul Hickey, director of public relations at the college. “And they can take the exact same core classes here that they can at any four-year school.” Hickey points out that Columbia State is accredited by the same Southern Association of Colleges and Schools that accredits universities such as Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Belmont, Lipscomb and Middle Tennessee State. “Every professor at Columbia State is required to have a master’s degree, and 85 percent of our faculty and staff hold even more advanced degrees,” Hickey says. Columbia State is headquartered in Maury County but serves a total of nine south-central Tennessee counties with its five campuses. Columbia State offers more than 50 areas of study, and the majority of students complete their two-year associate degrees and transfer to four-year institutions. – Jeannie Naujeck and Kevin Litwin

Maury County Public Schools Maury County students in grades kindergarten through 12th are served by Maury County Public Schools, which comprises 10 elementary schools, three middle schools, three unit schools, one alternative school and three high schools. One of the system’s most recent success stories has been that of Columbia Central High School, which is home to an impressive lineup of classes and some innovative programs that have attracted national attention. Along with 145 classes, 50 student clubs, a growing roster of Advanced Placement courses and award-winning academic teams, the school offers instruction for more than a dozen career and technical areas. It also boasts a 95 percent attendance rate. “We offer what students are interested in and move them to the highest level,” says Columbia Central High School Principal Cindy Johnson. “If they know how they can use their skills in their chosen vocation, it makes them attempt to excel at a higher degree.” These programs include mass communication, a popular program started by broadcast journalism teacher Dan Bell. Students in Bell’s classes produce Pride TV, an awardwinning television broadcast featuring stories about people and events at the school and in the community. Another example is the construction technology program,

in which students learn how to build a single-family home to market specifications. When finished, it is moved to an actual home lot and sold.

Arts & Culture

The High Life at Twilight Sunset Symphony tops Columbia’s cultural calendar

O

pportunities to enjoy and explore the arts abound in Maury County, with a year-round cultural calendar that includes everything from juried artisan craft fairs to classical music performances. Maury County is home to a multifaceted population that not only appreciates creative expression, but also encourages it throughout the community. Arts immersion starts young at the Mt. Pleasant Middle School for the Visual and Performing Arts, where students build self-confidence and develop their creative skills through a curriculum that integrates the arts with academics. The school is supported by a public-private partnership called the Kids on Stage Foundation. Teens and adults can find creative self-expression through the Maury County Arts Guild, which for more than 35 years has offered community theater, art exhibition opportunities, and classes in photography, drawing and painting. Visiting artists can show their works at the well-regarded Pryor Art Gallery at Columbia State Community College, which hosts artists in a variety of media, from painting and photography to sculpture and pottery. One of the cultural highlights of the year is Sunset Symphony, an annual outdoor dinner and musical perfor mance held on the grounds of one of Maury County’s stunning antebellum homes, Elm Springs, each summer. Sunset Symphony is a fundraiser for the Columbia Breakfast Rotary Club, which uses the $14,000 to $18,000 generated by the event each year to support a service project that includes building park shelter, financing a clean water project in Honduras and providing academic scholarships for high school seniors. “Instead of doing a bunch of smaller fundraisers, we decided to do one big

one and work on it all year long,” says Mike Sharpton, president of the club and a Certified Financial Planner™ with MetLife. An average of 700 people each summer enjoy a sit-down gourmet dinner, featuring such entrees as tenderloin and pecan-crusted chicken. But there’s nothing stuffy about Sunset Symphony. Prizes are awarded for the most elaborate and outrageously decorated tables, and the outdoor nature of the event encourages attendees to dress for summer. “It’s a formal dinner in an informal setting,” Sharpton says. The music part of the event is free and open to the public. Each year,

more than 1,000 people bring their own picnics and enjoy music, including performances by the Maury County Community Band and a professional symphony. The repertoire ranges from classical to pops, and the crowd goes wild when the orchestra launches into a modern classic such as “Freebird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd. “Some people wish they’d play more Bach and Beethoven; some wish they’d play more rock and roll,” Sharpton says with a laugh. “But it’s a great crowd, a lively crowd. You’ll see local judges holding up their cigarette lighters like they were at a rock concert!” – Jeannie Naujeck

A Healthy Career Choice Hospital-school partnership prepares students for careers

A

lthough the new economy has downsized many industries, health-care is growing, and programs such as HOSA are helping local students get on board. The Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) program is a training and employment partnership between local schools and health-care organizations including Maury Regional Medical Center that gives students a leg up on future employment. It also gives the medical center a pipeline of well-educated workers. “That certainly is our goal,” says Kaye Brewer, vice president of human resources for Maury Regional Medical Center, a highly regarded 275-bed facility serving 260,000 residents. Maury Regional was one of only 23 hospitals in the nation to win the prestigious Premier Award for Quality in 2009. “There will be a growing need so we are always looking to educate individuals about health-care careers,” Brewer says. Students in several Maury County schools can participate 28

i m ag e s m au r y. c o m

in HOSA starting as freshmen with a general health science education course. Columbia Central High School’s nursing pathway prepares students for licensure as a certified nursing assistant. “When they’ve passed the exam, they can work as a certified nursing assistant at a nursing home or hospital,” says Susan Chapman, supervisor of Career and Technical Education at Columbia Central High School. “But it’s not our intention that they just be a CNA. That’s just one step on the ladder.” Some students go on to become a licensed practical nurse (LPN) or registered nurse (RN), she says. Maury Regional Medical Center works with the schools as an employer partner, offering students job shadowing and mentoring opportunities in rotations that include emergency medicine, radiology, nursing and respiratory therapy. Those who go on to college nursing programs often come back to Maury Regional Medical Center to fulfill their

clinical requirements, Brewer says. And even students who find they do not want to do hands-on work with patients gain exposure to careers such as pharmacy, dietetics and hospital business and finance. For the hospital, the investment is well worth it. “Even in the elementary schools, we’ll go in and talk about health-care careers,” Brewer says. “We want to grow our own workforce. We will always need health-care professionals.” A Growing Field The health-care industry actually added more than 600,000 new jobs during the two-year recession that began December 2007. Health-care occupations will continue to grow over the next decade, adding more than 3 million new wage and salary jobs by 2018—more than any other industry—to handle an aging population. – Jeannie Naujeck

Sports & Recreation

Center of the Action Maury County Park fosters fitness, fun and community

M

aury County Park, a 242-acre park in Columbia, is the heart of outdoor recreation and the center of community life for children and adults. “It’s a real gathering place and a happening spot for Maury County,” says Patrick Harlan of the Maury Alliance. Located in Columbia, the park’s central feature is Kids Kingdom, a playground with a castle-like structure that was renovated top to bottom in 2009 by a class from Leadership Maury, a community leadership program and service organization. The volunteer group power-washed and resealed the surfaces of the castle, added sand to the sandbox and new wood chips to the play areas beneath the slides and swings. “They spent a lot of time working on it top to bottom,” says Al Ray, director of Maury County Parks & Recreation. “This structure is constantly used; it’s a focal point of the park, and they made it look nice and extended its life several years.” says Ray. Because of its size and proximity to downtown, Maury County Park is the crown jewel of an active parks system that also includes Woodland Park, Fairview Park, Williams Spring, Chickasaw Trace and Stillhouse Hollow Falls. Ray estimates that 600,000 to 800,000 people use facilities or attend events in the park annually, with the number rising

each year as more residents look for low-cost ways to enjoy the outdoors close to home. During warm months the park is busy with horse shows, beauty pageants, ball games, the Maury County Fair and Mule Day, a hugely popular April festival that features a parade from downtown Columbia to the park. Mule Day, dating to 1840, commemorates Columbia’s livestock markets and agrarian heritage, and it has turned into a nearly weeklong fair that attracts thousands of visitors. “It’s a major part of our history from when we were settled, a great day of commerce,” Harlan says. “It is the destination.” For everyday celebrations, Maury County Park also offers residents walking trails, softball and football fields and eight picnic pavilions with grills, tables, electricity and running water. One of its most unique features is the train track for the Mid-South Live Steamers, a scale model train that operates just like real steamers of yore. During spring and fall meetups, steamer train enthusiasts take children and adults on a nostalgic trip back to the glory days of rail transport with free rides around the park. The trains are accurate in scale and historical details, Ray says. “They’re heavy and substantial and a big investment,” Ray says. “They’re not toys – well, maybe toys for big kids.” – Jeannie Naujeck
