Celebrate all things musical at the four-day MerleFest Americana festival, which attracts 75,000 people to Wilkes Community College every April. The event began in 1988 and annually provides a $10 million impact to the local economy.

Appalachian State University offers astrophysics in its physics degree program, and a four-telescope Dark Sky Observatory graces the campus as a research facility for faculty and students. One night every month, the observatory also opens to the public.

Mark your calendar for Oct. 1-5 and the Wilkes County Agricultural Fair, a favorite annual event held at the North Wilkesboro Rotary Fairgrounds. Fair goers enjoy rides, games and an exhibit hall packed with produce, baked goods, crafts and more.

Watch a murder mystery outdoors each summer when Bleu Moon Productions presents Tom Dooley: A Wilkes County Legend at the Forest Edge Amphitheater in Fort Hamby Park.

W

hat could be finer than a peaceful bike ride along a quiet rural road on a sunny spring day? How about dragging your muddy bike up a gravelly hill and being greeted by a raucous cowbell serenade?

Around here, bicycling is many things to many people.

For some, it’s easy outdoor family fun. For others, rigorous mountain biking offers the perfect weekend getaway. And still others find cycling a healthy, environmentally friendly way to commute. In Wilkes County, they all can find what they prefer.

“Wilkes offers the best of everything for road cycling,” says Andrew Stackhouse, organizer of the Wilkesboro Cyclocross Festival. “It has a fantastic network of quiet country roads that are clearly marked, and a wide variety of terrain, from trails along the Yadkin River to climbs over Brushy Mountain, and there are fantastic trails for mountain biking.”

Cyclocross Stackhouse’s Cyclocross Festival, which will be held for the fourth time in November 2013, combines aspects of road biking and mountain biking for what he describes as

Wilkes County has almost 1,000 miles of paved secondary roads, which are perfect for road cycling.

“a somewhat foolish spectacle,” but one whose success netted a Wilkes Tourism Development Authority grant for $4,000. The annual weekend festival, expected to draw 300-400 attendees, was named best new event in Cyclocross Magazine’s reader poll in 2013.

Cyclocross races, which last from a half hour to an hour, are held on contained courses that feature obstacles, gravel, steep descents and climbs, sharp curves, and lots of mud. Fans and competitors tend to wear silly costumes, shout friendly insults at one another, clang cowbells and joyfully sample free beer. As Stackhouse says, cyclocross racers embrace miserable race conditions.

Mountain Biking Fortunately, the county offers much non-“miserable” cycling too. The W. Kerr Scott Reservoir’s 234 miles of mountain-biking trails cross varying terrain, from the very steep Dark Mountain Trail to the technically difficult Warrior Trail to the beginner-friendly Overmountain Victory Trail, named a National Recreation Trail in 2012. All are popular with local cyclists, such as the Brushy Mountain Cyclists Club, which puts in prodigious effort to help maintain the trails with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Increasingly, the reservoir is drawing cyclists from other places too.

“It amazes me. But the trails are full every weekend, all year round,” says Jory Shepherd, assistant operations manager for the reservoir.

Road Cycling Road cycling is also growing in popularity, from short rides on in-town greenways to tours on the area’s many bike-friendly roads. A new eight-county bike plan by the North Carolina Department of Transportation launched this year, and a state-wide bicycle plan will link Wilkes to other counties’ bike routes. The new Complete Streets state policy will help make roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists, and hopefully encourage people to take to the streets on two wheels.

“As we build up more bike lanes and bicycle facilities like greenways, the safer people feel about cycling, the more they will cycle and the more that will encourage others to cycle too,” says Dean Ledbetter, senior planning engineer for NCDOT division 11.

“This will help us to provide better accommodations for pedestrians and cyclists as we plan.”

Big Tom’s, named in honor of Tom Buchanan, a former contestant on Survivor: Africa, specializes in pizzas and hot wings, but also has great salads, cheeseburgers and other sandwiches.

Mason Jar Grill also gives diners a lot of choice with a menu that includes spaghetti, burgers, barbecue, sandwiches, steaks, salads and more.

The 50’s Snack Bar in downtown Wilkesboro, replete with retro decor, caters to the breakfast and lunch crowd from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday and 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.

The restaurant offers daily specials, cooked-to-order items like omelets, and homemade specialties like pimento cheese and egg salad sandwiches.

A couple of local entrepreneurs have found big success with their national franchises in Wilkes County. Jon Gambill’s sweetFrog frozen yogurt shop opened in March 2013 and is the best performing location for the brand in North Carolina and the fourth best performing nationally.

The Wilkesboro sweetFrog joins another successful franchise, Hannah Brewster’s Qdoba Mexican Grill which also opened the same month nearby.

Breath of Fresh Air

Wilkesboro Open Air Market benefits patrons and vendors Like any of the artists and artisans participating in the Wilkesboro Open Air Market, Rebecca Catrett appreciates the income she receives from selling her craft there.

But she says the true benefit of being a part of the weekly market can’t necessarily be measured in dollars and cents.

“I’ve had a great success out of it,” says Catrett, an area potter who became a first-time vendor at the Open Air Market in the spring of 2013. “Not only do you have a way of selling something and getting an income out of it, but you also get the publicity from people coming

by to see your work. That probably helps me more than making money.”

Therein lies a key reason why the town of Wilkesboro decided to launch an open air market, which runs from April through October at its location on Main Street in downtown Wilkesboro. It allows residents to get to know the regional artists, crafts people and farmers.

“It puts the market patrons face to face with the people” who are creating the art or producing the food, says Andrew Carlton, the city’s director of Planning and Community Development and the coordinator for the Wilkesboro

Music and Other Festivities Launched in 2011, the Open Air Market is open every Friday through the growing and harvesting season, which typically spans about five to six months, and admission is free. Farmers throughout the region bring their produce, while artists, such as Catrett, display and sell their works. Merchants also engage the crowd with demonstrations, and local food and beverage vendors set up shop.

In addition, the venue hosts a monthly event known as “Third Friday,” a festival that runs from 4-9 p.m. and features live music, food vendors and plenty of activities for children. A new stage was completed in early 2013 to accommodate the bands and other entertainment.

“We had a great first year and we built on it even more so (in 2012),” Carlton says, “so much so that we received an award of merit from the North Carolina Small Town Main Street program.”

Wilkes County’s many beautiful Outdoor retreats beckon

With mountains, forests, rivers and streams to spare, Wilkes County beckons residents and visitors alike with nearly endless chances for outdoor recreation.

Hiking, Biking, Picnicking Head out the door in Wilkesboro or North Wilkesboro and you can quickly find yourself on the Yadkin River Greenway’s user-friendly walking and biking trail. Or get a bit more ambitious and head to Stone Mountain State Park, where a half dozen hiking trails lead to a waterfall or panoramic views. Rev things up and go rock climbing or horseback riding, or just kick back and enjoy a lazy picnic.

Rendezvous Mountain Educational State Forest is also a premium place to picnic, and both parks offer substantial family-friendly educational programs.

Camping, Fishing The Wilkes area is famous for its epic fishing opportunities, especially for those in search of rainbow, speckled or brown trout.

Fly fishing spots are everywhere, from Stone Mountain Creek to

the Reddies River, Roaring River, W. Kerr Scott Reservoir and dozens of creeks and streams.

Camping sites are easy to find, from Stone Mountain’s campgrounds for backpackers to a variety of well-equipped tent sites and RV campsites, including the Bandits Roost campground at the Kerr Reservoir.

W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir The reservoir also offers an almost unparalleled range of activities, from water sports to hunting and even the annual presentation of a play about local legend Tom Dooley at the outdoor Forest Edge Amphitheater at Fort Hamby.

“It’s hard to even tell you what’s the most popular, because we have so much to do,” says Jory Shepherd, assistant operations manager for the reservoir. “Of course we have the lake, which draws boaters, fishermen and swimmers. And the mountain-biking trails. And we have 148 campsites and activities like fishing tournaments, bike races and annual events. We have

lots of families we see year after year.”

Indeed, the reservoir welcomes 700,000-800,000 guests annually.

Water activities, from water skiing and wakeboarding to quiet canoeing and kayaking, are among the most popular attractions at the 1,475-acre lake, which includes 55 miles of shoreline, seven boat launches and a marina. But the site is busy year round with wildlife management and educational activities, an archery range, a planned disc golf course and hunting for turkey and deer.

Cheryl Jacobs and Carmen Daecher, retirees from Pennsylvania, moved to Wilkes County in 2009 and purchased 65 acres in Hays.

W

hen David and Freda DeGruchy were looking for a place to live after retiring from their jobs in Maryland, they didn’t have a long list of criteria to consider.

The couple knew they wanted to be relatively close to the Blue Ridge Parkway, where they had spent many vacations throughout their marriage. And they were seeking an area that features mild summers and winters and beautiful falls and springs.

“We wanted to go somewhere that still had the four seasons, rather than somewhere like Florida,” says David DeGruchy, who retired from the Federal Aviation Administration in 1992. “We enjoy the four seasons but not with the extreme winters. Plus, we would often vacation on the Blue Ridge Parkway, so we knew we wanted to be somewhat close to it.”

Wilkes County was just the place, the DeGruchys found out during their research.

But it’s what they discovered after moving here more than 20 years ago that has really made a difference in their decision to call Wilkes County home.

“We found out how friendly the people are,” says Freda DeGruchy, a retired teacher. “We lived in a bedroom community in Maryland, so we would see our neighbors maybe in the summertime and a little on weekends, and that would be it. But here, people have really welcomed us.

“To me, that is a plus. It’s the people who have made it.” l i va b i l i t y. c o m / w i l k e s b o r o

Breathtaking Vistas Others who have chosen to retire here would echo that sentiment.

“The friendliness of the people becomes very addictive,” says Carmen Daecher, who bought a 65-acre piece of property in Hays when he and his wife, Cheryl Jacobs, moved here in 2009.

“There is no hesitation of people to be friendly. Everyone is very open-armed and embracive.”

Much like the DeGruchys, Daecher and Jacobs were attracted to the physical aspects of Wilkes County.

“The vistas in Wilkes County are breathtaking,” says Daecher, who co-owned a consulting business in Mechanicsburg, Pa., with his wife before both retired.

“It’s an incredibly beautiful county from a geographic point of view.

“We also really liked the rural character of the county. It wasn’t hustle-bustle and a lot of traffic and things like that. It gave us a change of pace from what was a faster pace of life.”

Staying Active Even though both couples are retired, they still find plenty to do here. The DeGruchys stay active in their church, and they also lead line dancing and clogging classes at the Wilkes Senior Center and at a similar facility in Alexander County.

Daecher and Jacobs are involved in the promotion of the area’s wine industry.

“My wife and I enjoy wine,” Daecher says. “We’re so excited about the potential for the wine industry in this county that we’ve taken an active supporting role, trying to get it better known.”

Both couples are seeing like-minded people move here.

“It seems to be getting more and more popular with retirees,” David DeGruchy says. “We volunteer at the visitors center, and we’ll see very few people who are from Wilkes County. Most are transplants like us.”

Major Makeover

Medical center expansion features state-of-the-art additions

fast fact Wilkes Regional Medical Center, a 130-bed facility, includes a 10-bed skilled nursing unit on its main campus.

Wilkes Regional Medical Center has undergone quite a transformation, and has a stateof-the-art wound care center, heart center and emergency department to show for it. The expansion, which broke ground in May 2011, was completed in March 2013 and is now available to Wilkes County residents.

New ER Doubles in Size Expansion to the emergency department increased the number of exam rooms from 19 to 29 and doubled in size from 9,500 to 19,000 square feet. According to Wilkes Regional Medical Center VP of Business Development Tammy Love, the emergency department is the busiest in the region.

Hometown High-Tech “[The new heart center] is built to serve. We see 3,000 patients a month,� Love says.

Previously, the department design was for only 40 people a day. When the expansion began, the department was seeing 100 people a day.

The Heart Center of Wilkes Regional includes offices, new exam rooms, a waiting area, two stress-testing labs and support space. The 2,200-square-foot heart center opened for patients in May 2012.

The wound care center, located at nearby West Park, specializes in advanced wound care. It offers hyperbaric oxygen chambers to treat certain types of wounds.

According to Love, it is a benefit to have the wound care center close to home so that people don’t have to drive an hour for the care they need.

Joint Commission Honor The medical center received top performer honors for quality from the Joint Commission, placing them among the top 18 percent of all hospitals in the nation.

“I see that from a standpoint of how we’re moving forward,” Love says.

Hop on and Learn

Read and Ride program encourages fitness and independent thinking When students at some Wilkes County elementary schools think of the three “Rs,” they will likely be thinking of reading, riding and recumbent bicycles.

Four Wilkes County elementary schools – Mulberry, North Wilkesboro, C.C. Wright, and Mt. Pleasant – are participating in a Read and Ride program that allows students to have reading time while riding a recumbent stationary bike.

Improving Fluency and Fitness The program builds on students’ self-esteem in two ways: it promotes good health and physical activity, as well as encourages independent reading skills. It also helps students burn off extra energy, according to Mulberry Elementary Principal Rebecca Mastin.

The other three participating schools call the program Code Read, says Wilkes County Schools Director of Development Dennis Huggins. The program, which is funded by the NC Rural Center, has a two-fold focus: reading fluency and obesity reduction.

“Reading is fun. Riding is fun,” Huggins says of Code Read. “You can do both at the same time.”

Older Students Take Action A group of 11th and 12th grade student leaders are the driving force behind Code Read. The students are part of a group focused on community development by targeting needs in their community, and working to make specific changes. According to Huggins, the youth leaders were certain the program was the one they wanted to support when they watched a teacher demonstrate how effectively an energetic student was redirected to reading, but still allowed to move.

“My ultimate goal would be to put these in the other nine schools that don’t have them. There could be some opportunities with the after-school programs,” Huggins says, noting that some teachers have begun using the bikes after school.

Lowe’s Grant Funding The stationary bicycles at Mulberry Elementary were acquired with a grant from the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation. Lowe’s grants were given to 46 North Carolina schools for parent-initiated school-improvement projects benefiting K-12 public education.

Using a vertically integrated business model, Tyson controls the manufacture of its meat products and their distribution to local stores to guarantee optimal freshness and consistency.

Also in Wilkesboro, Suncrest Farms Country Hams Inc. is a locally owned and operated producer of meat products like country hams and pork skins. Suncrest products are found at retail outlets such as Food Lion, Walmart Supercenter and Publix.

Gardner Glass Products Inc. employs about 140 residents and has been in the glass manufacturing business for more than 45 years. Gardner’s products include a range of mirror solutions including SaftiFirst brand fire-rated safety glass and Dreamwalls-brand glass products.

Window World, which has its corporate headquarters in North Wilkesboro, operates 205 locations across 46 states, making it the largest window replacement company in America.

Founded in North Wilkesboro, Lowe’s operates 1,700 superstores and is one of the largest home improvement retail stores in the United States. Today, Wilkes is home to the Lowe’s Customer Support Center-East facility.

In addition, Louisiana-Pacific Corp. employs nearly 200 residents at its Wilkesboro plant where it manufactures home siding.

Packaging

Multi-Industry solutions Interflex Group is a leading producer of specialty packaging for various markets including fresh foods, packaged foods and pet products. Interflex employs about 90 residents at its Wilkesboro facility.

In Good Company Locally founded Lowe’s employs thousands

T

he very first Lowe’s opened as a small hardware store in 1946 in North Wilkesboro, and the business grew steadily thanks to the post-World War II building boom.

Today, Lowe’s operates more than 1,750 stores in the United States, Canada and Mexico, with 245,000 employees serving 15 million North America customers each week. In North Carolina alone, 23,000 employees work in stores, distribution centers and customer support centers.

Wilkesboro is home to one of Lowe’s three Customer Support Centers – the other two centers are in Mooresville, N.C., and Albuquerque, N.M. – and the company remains a top employer in Wilkes County. In fact, its 2,200 employees working at the Customer Support Center in Wilkesboro make Lowe’s the second-largest employer in Wilkes County, behind Tyson.

Of those 2,200 Lowe’s employees, about 1,300 work in jobs that support the company’s efforts in information technology,

accounting, transportation, logistics, human resources and real estate, and the other 900 employees work in the contact center.

Campus Covers 44 Acres The Customer Support Center in Wilkesboro is actually housed in the former Wilkesboro Mall, a building that Lowe’s purchased in the late 1990s. The building underwent major renovations and modernization since that time, and today covers 432,000 square feet.

In all, the CSC-Wilkesboro campus spans approximately 44 acres and includes a cafeteria, coffee shop and an outdoor walking trail that stretches nearly one mile in length.

As for future Customer Support Center opportunities, Lowe’s officials point out that new positions are added on a frequent basis to the CSC-Wilkesboro facility.

For example, the company added

175 new contact center jobs in the summer of 2012.

Chamber backs several leadership initiatives

In May 2013, North Wilkesboro served as one of several U.S. cities that hosted the annual Chick-fil-A Leadercast, a webcast originating from Atlanta that featured top speakers providing their views on leadership and motivation.

More than 140 people attended the Leadercast webcast in North Wilkesboro at the Stone Center for the Performing Arts, with the Wilkes Chamber of Commerce organizing and marketing the event while the local Chick-fil-A restaurant provided food.

“We were apprehensive because we didn’t know if a webcast on a projection screen could hold people’s attention, but you could have heard a pin drop because everyone in attendance was so keyed into each individual speaker,” says Linda Cheek, Wilkes Chamber of Commerce president. “The oneday event was so inspiring that we will host Leadercast again in 2014, on May 9.”

“This successful program has been around since 2000,” she says.

United Teens in Action Cheek adds that the chamber also sponsors a youth leadership program called UTA – United Teens in Action – involving 16-20 high school juniors who participate in activities once a month from September through April.

“The students represent the four traditional high schools and one Early College school in Wilkes County, with the UTA program

more focused upon community efforts and developing friendships,” she says. “These are kids who don’t know each other and are from high schools that usually rival one another, so they meet and learn how to connect and partner for the good of the community.”

For example, the 2012-2013 UTA students were involved in a literacy project that secured grant money to buy books and stationary bikes for three elementary schools.

“Children ride the bikes when they read, so they are exercising while developing their reading skills,” Cheek says. “The young kids think it’s fun and teachers are pleased with the results.”

Leadership Wilkes The chamber also continues to host a Leadership Wilkes program each year to help applicants hone their leadership skills.

“The program is open to all chamber members. We host classes of 12-18 people beginning each August and there are nine gettogethers held every other week,” Cheek says. “Leadership Wilkes begins with a full-day retreat and then the nine sessions help participants become more informed and qualified to be better visionary leaders within our community.”
