ome here to unplug. Or plug in. We offer an array of experiences ranging from exciting nightlife to a bonanza of culinary exploration to colorful
celebrations and festivals. Find your inner outdoor warrior. Meet the creative soul you’ve forgotten. Reconnect with one another. Our promise to you is to inspire and enrich you. Our region is a bountiful experiential banquet with something for everyone. Dig in and make it your own.

a good place to start Make the Asheville Visitor Center your first stop. It’s your home base for planning an experience just the way you like it. You’ll hear from friendly locals about their favorite ways to experience our region. Take a vintage trolley or Segway® tour, purchase tickets to attractions, buy tasty homegrown souvenirs, and if you haven’t already made a room reservation, our resident concierge will be glad to help. And we’ll acquaint you with our jazzy new system of signs and kiosks designed to help you navigate the area with ease once you head out on your own.
celebrate in style
leader of the pack The newest gem located in the heart of Asheville is an emerald oasis called Pack Square Park. A community gathering place for planned (as well as unplanned) enter tainment, this lush, 6.5acre expanse echoes the area’s natural beauty with its rolling lawn and inviting interactive fountain, affectionately named “Splashville.” An exciting performance venue anchors the park’s east side; the Vance Monument obelisk anchors the west side.
Life is so good here, we like to celebrate it. A lot. Sometimes it’s spontaneous. Other times, it’s anticipated. We pay tribute to sweet mountain honey at the Sourwood Festival in Black Mountain. We groove to the African and Caribbean rhythms of our annual Goombay! Festival. We are home each July to the Southeast’s biggest street festival – Bele Chere. And we pay homage to our rich Appalachian musical heritage every year at the Mountain Dance & Folk Festival.
take it outside If the great outdoors speaks to you, our mountains will answer the call. Rafting, fly-fishing, road cycling, hiking, trail running, mountain biking – all of these activities are available here. Explore the expansive natural beauty of Pisgah National Forest and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Drive one of America’s most scenic motor roads, the Blue Ridge Parkway. Stroll around the cultivated gardens of The North Carolina Arboretum. Inhale. Exhale. (Breathe deeply and repeat).

what to do
T
he adage says you can’t please all of the people all of the time. But we take issue with that in Western North Carolina. Pleasures may be as simple as a picnic overlooking a Blue
Ridge Parkway vista, or strolling along Asheville’s downtown streets. Become part of the energy of Asheville’s Friday night drum circles. Experience the thrill of ziplining through the treetops. Or taste local craft brews – from hoppy pale ales to creamy stouts – at one of Beer City USA's 10 microbreweries. We’ve got something for everyone.

home, sweet home Ever since George Vanderbilt opened his 250-room castle in 1895, Biltmore has been both timeless and ever-changing. With its 8,000 acres, its winery and its on-site inn, the estate offers a multiday immersion in what living like a Vanderbilt should be. The newest addition is Antler Hill Village, a quaint and bustling center for dining, entertainment, shopping and learning even more about Biltmore’s rich history. Don’t miss Cedric’s Tavern, named in honor of one of Mr. Vanderbilt’s beloved Saint Bernards, where the vibe, decor and cuisine are reminiscent of a European pub.
font of wellness Recognized as an area for healing and rejuvenation since the 1800s, Western North Carolina continues its legacy as a center for healing arts, mineral baths and a wide selection of spa treatments. From the subterranean luxury of The Spa at The Grove Park Inn Resort to smaller ports of serenity in Asheville, Weaverville and Black Mountain, you can treat yourself to hot stone massages, natural herbal body wraps, mineral spring soaks and restorative facials – there is something for everyone in need of the magic of a spa experience.
bright lights, big city When night’s curtain falls on our region, curtains go up all over town. Check out live musical performance venues such as Grey Eagle and the legendary rockin' Orange Peel. Find musicians, dancers, thespians and other performing artists at the intimate Diana Wortham Theatre in the Pack Square Cultural District. Or be transported to another world with the Asheville Symphony Orchestra or Asheville Lyric Opera. A short drive from Asheville, Black Mountain watering holes boast everything from Celtic and Americana to bluegrass.

pouring it on Nitro Stout. Wee Heavy Scotch Ale. Fiddlehead Extra Pale Ale. Ninja Porter. Gaelic Ale. This is one craft beer scene you don’t want to miss. Take a guided tour of some of the area’s 10 microbreweries on a Brews Cruise, learn about the craft of beer making and sample the reasons why Asheville was voted Beer City USA in 2010. You’ll find local craft beers in our restaurants, shops and, of course, our pubs. We also celebrate our love of beer with festivals, including the popular Brewgrass Festival each September.

cultural pearls Our region has a culturally rich heritage of thinkers, dreamers, writers, leaders, musicians, poets and artists, and you can understand why when you come here. You, too, can experience the influence of past residents by visiting haunts lovingly preserved for future generations. Walk the halls of the Old Kentucky boarding house, one of literature’s most famous landmarks and immortalized in Thomas Wolfe’s epic autobiographic novel Look Homeward, Angel. Gain a better understanding of what life was like on a pioneer farmstead at Vance Birthplace. Learn more about these and other heritage sites by visiting ExploreAsheville.com.
mountain magic Take a deep breath of crisp mountain air and let dramatic vistas envelop you with a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway, wonderfully skirting Asheville’s city limits. Often called “America’s Favorite Drive” and named one of the top scenic drives in the United States, the parkway stretches across the crest of the Southern Appalachians with four entry points in the immediate Asheville area. In fact, some of the most breathtaking overlooks on its entire 469mile route are conveniently close to town, making a drive along its winding road a mustdo for any visitor. The parkway is in its prime in spring and fall, boasting vibrant wildflowers and brillant fall foliage. And don’t forget to watch for wildlife – whitetail deer and black bears aren’t uncommon sightings.

doing downtown
A
sheville's eclectic downtown hums with art galleries and street musicians, sidewalk dining, nationally recognized bookstores and bakeries for canines. The
heart of the city is a living testament to the community’s mountain-born spirit of independence – independent businesses, independent people and singular beauty. Yet, for all its unique offerings, Asheville’s downtown resonates with the warmth and friendly charm of a walkable Southern town.
12
a heart for art Average and run-of-the-mill just don’t apply here. There’s nothing mediocre about the original art and handmade items you can find at shops around town. You’ll find objects of all varieties: clay, fiber arts, jewelry, paintings, sculptures, furniture, quilts and blown glass. Often, you’ll run into the craftsman who made the fiddle you’re thinking of purchasing. Or the artist who’s just brought her internationally known pottery to the gallery. With more than 4,000 artists and craftspeople who call the area home, interactions like this are common.
feel the beat Asheville dances to the beat of its own drum in more ways than one. If you happen to be strolling downtown on a Friday night, you’ll no doubt get caught up in the spontaneous beat of the weekly drum circle at Pritchard Park. Weather permitting, local drummers of all ages and talents gather every Friday evening to show off their drumming skills. The energetic vibe usually attracts a crowd that dances up a storm. It’s a tradition that’s been shaping Asheville’s character for more than a decade.
world of flavors What are you in the mood for? Caribbean? French bistro? Argentinian? Southern fare? Spanish tapas? Artisanal breads? Just grab your fork and pull up a chair. No matter the flavor, our community nurtures the connection between field and table, chef and farmer. Innovative chefs in our corner of the world take advantage of the opportunity to showcase the bounty of our mountains each season and take fresh foods to new heights. To start your adventure, visit FoodtopianSociety.com.
take a tour There’s so much to see and do here, you’ll want to take advantage of the numerous tours available. Firsttime visitors love the guided trolley or Segway® tours, which acquaint you with many of the city’s major points of interest. History buffs will savor a walking tour of Montford Historic District. Or take a ghost tour and step into the world of the unknown to engage with spirits from the past. You can also laugh your way around town with the folks on the purple LaZoom Comedy Tour bus and learn the history of the area through their wacky, but wise, informative performances.

creative climate
I
n our area, you can find all sorts of creative and cultural offerings, from the Asheville
Art Museum to the Montford Park Players. Dance troupes and thespians abound; comedy festivals and musical performances are plentiful. Talented visual artists populate our galleries and events; balladeers and poets serenade, in honor of the beauty around us.
14
follow the dots Take to the streets for a creative spin on history. The Asheville Urban Trail, a 1.7mile selfguided walking tour among public art sculptures, tells the story of the area while high lighting the city’s stunning architecture – not to mention it’s a great way to see downtown.
what a show With a vibrant performing arts community, the best way to schedule your cultural intake is to visit LiveWireAsheville.com, which has the latest on what’s going on. You may decide to explore a dance and creative movement class at Black Mountain Center for the Arts, take in a production at Asheville Community Theatre or present your own original work at North Carolina Stage Company’s No Shame Theatre. Venues vary, too, from BeBe Theatre and Diana Wortham Theatre at Pack Place to the Asheville Civic Center. If all the world’s a stage, our community is a leading thespian.

the sounds of music Some folks claim Asheville’s creative vibe reverberates like a Moog synthesizer. Could it be because Bob Moog was a famous resident? Well, if you love music like we do, tune in. by the book The North Carolina mountains have had a long love affair with books. Asheville’s Thomas Wolfe proclaimed you can’t go home again. But many talented writers have called our region home and still do – O. Henry, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Charles Frazier, Ron Rash, Gail Godwin, Wilma Dykeman and Sara Gruen, to name a few. Book lovers will find a treasure-trove of indie bookstores in which to indulge their habit. At the Battery Park Book Exchange & Champagne Bar, readers can peruse the offerings while sipping wine or champagne and toast the written word.

isiting Asheville can be just about anything you want it to be. A cultural bonanza. An outdoor lover’s paradise. A gastronomic experience. A history buff’s joy ride. But the best part? It can be all of the above and more. Come ready to shift gears – from your hiking boots in the morning to contra dancing shoes at night. Most important is that you take your time savoring the city. Rent a mountain bike. Pull on jeans and a sweater for an evening of bluegrass at Pack Square Park. Stay in one of our lovely bed-and-breakfast inns. Linger over local eggs and sausage for breakfast. Or nab symphony seats.
The point is, you can shuffle this deck any way you like it. You can come with your spouse, your kids, the grandparents, your girlfriends, your book club. Spend a day. Or two. Or three. And while you’re here, make plans for what you want to do the next time you’re in Asheville.

two nights – tour, taste and tarry Day 1
Day 2
Afternoon Get a great overview of downtown Asheville with one of our tours – by trolley with Asheville Historic Trolley or Gray Line Trolley Tour; by Moving Sidewalk, Segway® Tour; or with the Urban Trail map in hand, stroll Asheville’s historic downtown with public art as your stopping points. Be prepared to wander into shops and galleries along the way, and grab lunch at one of the many restaurants in the art deco beauty, the Grove Arcade.
Morning and Early Afternoon Spend the day at Biltmore, visiting George Vanderbilt’s 250room French chateau, the 8,000acre grounds and gardens designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, America’s most visited winery, and the estate’s new Antler Hill Village, with its shops, tavern and exhibitions. Dine at one of the estate’s five restaurants, or at least grab a Winky Bar sundae, one of Biltmore’s sweet, frozen indulgences. Late Afternoon Outside Biltmore’s entrance is Historic Biltmore Village, filled with restaurants and shops, including the oneofakind New Morning Gallery and its sister boutique – Bellagio. You will recognize the architectural influence of Biltmore with the Europeaninspired village’s quaint pebbledash structures.
Evening Dine al fresco in the Pack Square Cultural District and be prepared for impromptu entertainment, street musicians and great people watching. Stroll through the new Pack Square Park, play in our interactive Splashville fountain then mosey over to the French Broad Chocolate Lounge to savor a Liquid Truffle, their signature sipping chocolate, for a sweet ending to the evening.
18
Day 3 Morning and Afternoon Put on your hiking boots or walking shoes and grab a picnic lunch at Laurey’s Catering & GourmetToGo or City Bakery before driving along the magnificent Blue Ridge Parkway. Meander along this ribbon of highway and stop to capture a photographic memory or two. Be sure you step into the Folk Art Center for some of the finest examples of American crafts in the region. Then, explore our Blue Ridge Mountains with a hike, a cycling trip or a scenic drive. Depending on the time of year, expect brilliant fall color, vivid red rhododendron, bushes bursting with blueberries or a riot of spring wildflowers.
three nights – the hills (and mountains) are alive Day 1 Afternoon Spend the afternoon in the creative community of Black Mountain. Antique shopping or contemporary furniture shopping is in the cards, as are the many art galleries and shops featuring local jewelry, ceramics and clothing. Stop in the Swannanoa Valley Museum to learn more about this fertile valley of creative folk, including the magnificent frescos by artist Ben Long.
Evening Jump on board. If you love beer, Asheville’s 10 microbreweries are just for you, and you can sample some of the breweries’ fare and learn about the art of handcrafted beers with a Brews Cruise tour. Stop at Bruisin’ Ales for some takehome sudsy souvenirs. If you’re seeking a family excursion, join the hilarious (and informative) crew aboard the purple LaZoom Comedy Tour bus for a wacky tour about town.
Day 3 Morning Breakfast with the locals at Clingman Café in the River Arts District. Stop in some of the artists’ studios for morning inspiration and make way for lunch at Sunny Point Cafe in hip West Asheville. Save room for a slice of homemade Ashevelvet, Italian cream cheese cake or other delectable desserts at Short Street Cakes, located just down the road. And then, get ready to use all that fuel.
vacation like a president Day 2 Morning and Afternoon Hit the water this morning with a whitewater rafting adventure on the French Broad or Nantahala rivers. Talented, trained outfitters will provide everything you need for this exciting adventure, including a picnic lunch. A great time, whether it’s a fun couples’ challenge, a girlfriends’ gathering or a family outing.
Afternoon Experience the thrill of a zipline canopy tour set against a gorgeous mountain backdrop. This guideescorted, trendy (and educational) adventure is available a short drive away. Area outfitters provide all necessary equipment and training.
Follow in the footsteps of President Obama and the First Lady, and model your visit to Asheville after the first couple’s weekend getaway at The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa in April 2010. For more details on the president’s visit to Asheville, go to ExploreAsheville.com.
Evening Cap off your evening with Bluegrass or Celtic music at Jack of the Wood. Jazz at Tressa’s. Indie rock at The Orange Peel Social Aid & Pleasure Club or contra dancing at the Grey Eagle. The vibe is all yours.

Area restaurants bring this bounty right to your table, with the region’s freshest seasonal offerings. Farmers and chefs routinely connect with visitors through the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project (asapconnections.org) and “what’s cooking” chef demonstrations at Asheville City Market. It’s a beautiful – and delicious – partnership.

cook with the pros When you’re passionate about food, cooking schools rock. The area is home to several, including French Broad Cooking Classes with Mark Rosenstein, a longtime leader in the local farmtotable movement. Others include Barbara Swell’s Log Cabin Cooking; Wally Maria’s Discover Italian cooking school; and the Seasonal School of Culinary Arts at Warren Wilson College, offering weeklong sessions featuring local, regional and nationally known chefs and wine experts.
civic pride, liquified Asheville recently earned the title of Beer City USA, and it’s no wonder. The area is home to 10 craft breweries, each with its own independent flavor profile. On any given day, about 50 local brews can be enjoyed on draft and in bottles in Asheville. Asheville Brews Cruise offers beer geeks a behind-the-scenes brewery tour. The area is also home to a world-renowned specialty beer store, Bruisin’ Ales, and several beer festivals, including Brewgrass and Winter Warmer. So, it is no surprise that sipping suds has become one of our favorite pastimes. For a complete list of breweries, visit ExploreAsheville.com.

hit the road The Western North Carolina mountains are the perfect place to reach for it. Challenge yourself during the annual Black Mountain Marathon and Mount Mitchell Challenge, where the elevation gain for this 40-mile run is more than 2,300 feet in the first 20 miles. Or how about the Shut-In Ridge Trail Race, a punishing 17.8 miles of hoofing it to the top of Mount Pisgah. Or participate in the Asheville Citizen-Times’ half marathon or numerous 5k races, such as the Asheville Chamber Challenge held each June. Or just take any one of the hundreds of trails here and run for the fun of it. To pick your perfect event, visit ashevilletrackclub.org and jusrunning.com. As with all area events, it's best to check the organization's website before planning your trip.
