edgy mountain culture O

urs is a society of creative thinkers, artistic entrepreneurs,

open-minded souls, and accepting and welcoming neighbors. So, when you come here, prepare to join our happily spontaneous community. A streetscape of women posing as living statues, artists painting and buskers merrily singing. An impromptu drum circle. A world theatrical debut. A once-in-a-lifetime concert. built to last Biltmore embodies land conservation, human industriousness and the virtue of beauty both natural and manmade. George and Edith Vanderbilt’s palatial 250-room home was a gathering place for family and friends, all enjoying this 8,000-acre country estate. More than 115 years later, Biltmore remains a place to enjoy with loved ones. Today, guests immerse themselves in the rich experience of America’s largest home and the legacy of Frederick Law Olmsted’s landscaping genius. They then relax at Biltmore’s more modern interpretation of the good life at Antler Hill Village, a bustling center for dining, entertainment and shopping and the home of Biltmore’s winery.

a fount of inspiration For centuries, the mountains of Western North Carolina have nurtured the creative spirit. Writers, painters, sculptors, poets, musicians, storytellers, actors, architects and designers – they all have tapped their wellspring of imagination in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It reads like a who’s who of culture – Thomas Wolfe, Buckminster Fuller, Merce Cunningham, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Charles Frazier, Bob Moog, Sara Gruen. The tradition is nowhere more evident than in the River Arts District, an emerging enclave shaping the next generation of artists.

inhale, exhale – renew Steadily, they climbed to the top of the mountain, seeking respite and beauty – even wisdom. Inch by inch, they came closer to enlightenment. Below, stretching out like an Appalachian quilt was the valley, acres of forests and farmland. With vistas so stunning they were hard to take in, they scanned the endless horizon and watched red-tailed hawks dancing in and out of the clouds. “What happened to you?” people at the office would later ask. Smiling, you say, “We found the answers.”

Asheville Dilemma: Stay longer and return often. Enjoy a hot-stone massage after an energizing hike and picnic on the Blue Ridge Parkway. a colorful spectrum of music Our region has become one of the hottest (and most colorful) spots in America for live musical performances, from the intimate Diana Wortham Theatre at Pack Place to The Orange Peel Social Aid & Pleasure Club (one of Rolling Stone ’s top five music venues in the country) to the River Arts District’s happening music hall, The Grey Eagle. And don’t forget the White Horse Black Mountain music venue. Of course, we have stellar bluegrass, too. From Bob Dylan and the Avett Brothers to Elton John and Sugarland to Yo-Yo Ma and the Beastie Boys to Smashing Pumpkins and B.B. King, our mountains will have you green with musical envy.

Asheville ranks as one of the top 10 cities in the South, according to readers of Southern Living magazine.

a lot to bark about When you plan a visit to Asheville, don’t leave man’s best friend behind. We love dogs as much as you do. We have gourmet doggie bakeries, puppy parks, dog washes, pet-friendly accommodations and a variety of pooch-perfect events throughout the year. Our al fresco dining is as much a gathering for canines as it is for humans. And, of course, your companion will love a walk through the mountains or a ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway (windows down, of course).

liquid libations Asheville was named Beer City USA for the third year in a row in 2011, a tribute to the dedicated brew masters conjuring up memorable beers in one of our 10 area microbreweries. Hop on a Brews Cruise for a behind-the-scenes beer tour, or enjoy your suds in one of our many brew-centric tasting rooms – from Lexington Avenue Brewery and Pisgah Brewing to Highland Brewing Co. Come drink to our annual Brewgrass and Winter Warmer festivals. Or browse our specialty beer stores and take home a liquid remembrance of your visit.

festival fever We put the C in Celebration. From the largest free street festival in the Southeast – Bele Chere – to sweet reverence for native nectar at Black Mountain’s Sourwood Festival or a beer-centric event that promises to “shake off” the winter blahs, we are all about fun. The Goombay! Festival, off Asheville’s historic Eagle Street, will have you bouncing to African-Caribbean rhythms. One of the region’s most cherished celebrations is the open-air Shindig on the Green gatherings held throughout the summer, which pay homage to the colorful and rich traditions of Appalachian music, song and dance.

I

f there’s an energy vortex in our region, its epicenter is downtown Asheville. Day or night, you can find a pulsating vibe coming in and out of art galleries, while dining al fresco or listening to street

performers serenading. Downtown has a rolling rhythm that is soulful and sweet, edgy and eclectic, mellow and honeyed. Becoming a part of our music scene is as easy as stepping out into our city’s center streets. All you have to do is let the vibrations of downtown Asheville beat in rhythm with your own heart.

12

tantalize your taste buds Downtown Asheville’s kitchens are on fire. On fire with every style, cuisine, ethnic flair and incomparable farm-to-fork food you would expect from a community of independent restaurants. From French and Indian to Spanish and Himalayan, Asheville’s restaurants have been lauded by many a gastronomical traveler. Just plan on four meals a day – at least.

creative hands Asheville’s city center is filled with the work of multitudes of local artists and painters, sculptors, jewelry-makers, craftspeople, glassblowers, clay and fiber artists. It makes shopping for a keepsake a true pleasure, particularly because in many cases, you can shake the actual hands that made your favorite piece of art. Take home a handmade reminder of your time in our little piece of heaven, and relive daily the serene beauty, creative energy and artistic flair inspired by our Blue Ridge Mountains. And, if you hear the call of your inner child, kick up your heels in our interactive water playground, Splasheville!

Area outfitters can take you whitewater rafting, canoeing and kayaking on one of our scenic blueways, such as the French Broad and Nantahala rivers. We also have many oldfashioned swimming holes and scenic waterfalls to discover.

welcome to the neighborhoods fun and funky Go west across the French Broad River from downtown Asheville and you’ll be in – imagine – West Asheville. This side of our town is decidedly different from the rest of the city with its Brooklyn-ish feel and Bohemian streets. Grab a Sunny Point Café breakfast salad or a handmade burrito at the Lucky Otter. Catch some music at Westville Pub or wander into the River Arts District and enjoy a studio stroll and some 12 Bones Barbecue – a favorite of President Obama’s.

wonderful weaverville Just north of Asheville is Weaverville, a small mountain town with a large charm factor. Grab a bite and a brew at Jack of Hearts, located in a historic building that was once the town’s fire station, or just down the road at the Mediterraneangone-wild Stoney Knob Cafe, a family-owned eatery for 45 years. Step into artists’ studios to see them at work, then search out their finished pieces during Weaverville’s Art Safari, held twice a year (in spring and fall).

a foodtopian society state of mind Take a vibrant restaurant community. Add engaging and committed farmers and makers of foodstuffs. Combine with locals who think the farmers market is the place to be early in the morning. Blend in a hefty dose of admiration for creativity. Serve, savor and enjoy right away. And as often as possible.

something’s brewing Here in Beer City USA (a national designation we’ve garnered three years in a row), we take our brews seriously. Asheville has become the craft-brewing center of the Southeast, and suds-lovers can attest to both the diversity of beer styles, as well as the challenging quantity of beers to taste – 50 different beers in draft and bottles on any given day. Not that you’d want to do it quite that way, so plan to spend several days in our region. Cheers!

The city of 80,000 is an anomaly in its home state, with its indie-music cred, ambitious restaurants that could hold their own in San Francisco, and a panorama of the Blue Ridge Mountains that will have you turning circles just to take it all in.”
