edgy mountain culture A
sheville’s originality brings an extra sparkle to the streets. What does this special culture look like?
Hop on the purple and gold LaZoom tour bus to see it up close, from art deco architectural masterpieces to street-corner buskers to a psychedelic sunset. Take in memorable sculptures of stone and steel, and living statues that are really street performers. Experience a color wheel of festivals. Mix and mingle with all the players in our pageant.
mountain magic Now that you’ve reached the peak, stop and take in the view – a panorama of soft blue mountain ridges, like waves lapping the distant sky. Let the wind and sun caress your skin, breathe deeply and inhale the pine-scented perfumed air. Whether marveling at our region’s scenic wonders from America’s most popular scenic drive, the Blue Ridge Parkway, or visiting nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park, rest assured … you’ll leave renewed and refreshed.
creative spirit in action Famous writers like Thomas Wolfe and F. Scott Fitzgerald made this their literary home a century ago, and even presidents come here for inspiration, gracing landmarks such as The Grove Park Inn. Today, an energetic cast of creative artists breathes that spirit through inspiring works of art on painted canvas and carved wood, in thrown clay and blown glass, and on fiddles and synthesizers. The River Arts District alone is home to 165 artists with working studios.
exploration at its finest Stepping into America’s sumptuous Gilded Age is as easy as visiting Biltmore. America’s largest home – 250 rooms – is just the starting point for an unforgettable exploration of the Vanderbilt family’s inspiring retreat. Stroll through Biltmore’s century-old landscaped gardens and enjoy outdoor activities throughout hidden fields and forests. Then, unwind with dinner in the bustling Antler Hill Village & Winery.
do it your way

pportunities abound in innumerable experiences: Go for a hike on the Blue Ridge Parkway or visit a microbrewery in
the captivating River Arts District. Relax at a spa, sip chocolate at a local café or take in a show at a local music hall. In Asheville, you can do it all. We don’t believe in standing still, as long as local artists, musicians, actors and chefs have an enriching experience to share. If you’re ready to excite your senses and try something new, come along with us for your most memorable vacation ever.
bring your best friend (welcome, fido) Miles of wilderness hiking and scenic dog parks welcome pets. Dogs feel right at home in their own dreamy bed or snacking on a homemade, pet-friendly cookie at numerous area lodging properties. If your four-legged pal didn’t make the trip, pick up a gourmet biscuit or handmade collar at Bone-a-Fide Bakery in Black Mountain or Three Dog Bakery in Asheville. No wonder DogFriendly.com ranked the Asheville area and Blue Ridge Parkway their No. 2 vacation spot.
Asheville wins the About.com reader’s choice award for Most Romantic Destination in the United States and Canada. festival spotlight We’re throwing a party – and everyone’s invited! Big-time festivals dot our local community calendars, keeping the air filled with music and tapping toes. Join Shindig on the Green, a festival celebrating our mountain heritage through music and dance, most summer weekends at Pack Square Park. For big thrills, it’s Bele Chere, the largest free street festival in the Southeast, when all downtown Asheville becomes a stage. Goombay! Festival brings African rhythms and Caribbean food to town for all to enjoy, while LAAFF – the Lexington Avenue Arts & Fun Festival – celebrates the artist in all of us. Black Mountain’s Sourwood Festival shares the sweetest old-fashioned mountain fare – honey!

When the sun goes down, the lights go up – from welcoming craft breweries like Pisgah Brewing in Black Mountain or Asheville’s Highland Brewing Co. to Jack of the Wood or the intimate Altamont Theatre. Or dance the night away to the vibe of top rock bands playing in intimate clubs like The Grey Eagle or The Orange Peel Social Aid & Pleasure Club, one of Rolling Stone’s top-five music venues in the country.

fun for all ages We call it quality time. When you bring the whole family, the focus is on spontaneous outdoor fun. Start with a romp through the Splasheville! interactive fountain downtown, then discover the area’s many natural swimming holes and famous Sliding Rock, a natural water slide in the Pisgah National Forest. Mix it up with horseback riding, a zipline tour over mountain ridges, playtime with the otters at the WNC Nature Center, a treetop adventure tour, biking along trails and greenways, or the memorable sights and sounds of an Asheville Tourists baseball game.

star gazing in the mountains The blockbuster film based on Suzanne Collins’ hit novel The Hunger Games was shot entirely in North Carolina, where the Blue Ridge Mountains provided the perfect backdrop for both District 12 and the perilous arena scenes. Do what the stars did – head out to hiking trails, waterfalls and historic landscapes, then come back to Asheville to enjoy our vibrant mountain culture.

sweet and savory Take a trip around the culinary world just by roaming downtown Asheville’s friendly café-lined sidewalks. Many of the city’s 250 independent restaurants make downtown their home … and farm-fresh local food their signature ingredients. Asia, Africa, South America, Europe – they’re all here, along with Southern favorites with an Asheville spin. You’ll find unique gourmet food trucks and surprising niche culinary shops for that tasty foodie souvenir. Discover how much fun the downtown restaurant scene can be when you sample a bit of everything.
seen on the street What better souvenir of Asheville’s artistic legacy than a piece of handcrafted jewelry, a painting, or a work in textile or clay to bring home. It’s easy to spend a whole day discovering our galleries, craft studios and other spectacular display spaces – and meeting the artists themselves. The Asheville Downtown Gallery Guide, available at the Asheville Visitor Center, is merely a starting list and map, so be sure to peek around every corner, too.
But don’t admire Asheville only for its eye candy; those who scratch below the surface will find a culinary scene that rivals that of any major metropolis, locally brewed beers to please even the biggest ale aficionado, and places to rest your head that the word hotel wouldn’t do justice.”
AmericanWay magazine center of the square For as long as there’s been Asheville, the public square has been its heart. Today’s Pack Square and vibrant new Pack Square Park welcome the world to meet our most colorful characters, play, picnic, take in a free concert or just sit a spell in the shadows of history. A destination all its own, Pack Square Park is crisscrossed with greenery and pathways and lined with memorable buildings. Visit often – the ever-changing pageant of festivals, fountains and food keeps the scene alive.

Leave plenty of time for shopping – there’s a find on every street. Stroll through the Grove Arcade, an architectural gem, offering a city block of shops and a portico market for shopping al fresco. Bright storefronts and great places to eat line Biltmore Avenue and Broadway. For the hippest clothing and accessories, head to Lexington Avenue, also home of Tops for Shoes – a square block full of designer shoes. Elegant Haywood Street has all of life’s essentials: chocolate, coffee and books. Merchants have embraced Asheville’s Buy Local movement by showcasing handcrafted goods, and we hope you will, too.

built to last Feast your eyes on Asheville’s fairy-tale architecture, and feel the city’s history come to life: creamy spires and terra cotta towers, Gothic gargoyles, and richly carved friezes with eclectic and Art Deco verve. Our nationally recognized historic buildings recall the glory days of this “Paris of the South” a century ago, executed with Old World craftsmanship and preserved in the amber of time. Enjoy these treasures on foot via the self-guided Asheville Urban Trail, or hop on a guided trolley tour that will take you from downtown to Biltmore Village for more treasures.

folks crave edgy performance and head for the Asheville Fringe Festival, while others enjoy contemporary dance at the BeBe Theatre. Both Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center and the Asheville Art Museum bring local perspective to visual arts, while bookstores and coffee shops around the region host events by today’s top writers.
setting the stage The curtain goes up every night in Asheville. Asheville Community Theatre, North Carolina Stage Company, Diana Wortham Theatre and the intimate Altamont Theatre offer a selection of drama, dance, music and comedy. Hometown performers light up stages all over Asheville, including the Magnetic Field Theatre and under the stars at the Hazel Robinson Amphitheatre. Link to LivewireAsheville.com for all the performances in town.
music in the air Folk or funk, banjo or bass, our calendar of music festivals will keep you hopping all year. The eclectic LEAF, or Lake Eden Arts Festival, brings tuneful fun from around the globe to Black Mountain each May and October.
get your Moog on Touch a bit of musical history at the Moog Music factory and showroom, where free guided tours tell the story of Moog’s influence on music. Crucial to the development of pop music, Dr. Robert Moog’s electronic instruments, synthesizers and guitars have empowered generations of musicians from Stevie Wonder to The Monkees to Moby to craft their signature sounds. The annual Moogfest event fills downtown Asheville with pulsating sights and sounds, and attracts an international audience.
For nearly 50 years Shindig on the Green has staged traditional mountain music and dance in downtown Asheville, most Saturdays from June through Labor Day in Pack Square Park. The last weekend of July, Bele Chere turns downtown Asheville into the biggest free street festival in the Southeast, an energetic musical event with surprises every year. The Goombay! Festival awakens downtown with African-Caribbean food and music each year in late August. Lexington Avenue Arts & Fun Festival, nicknamed LAAFF, shuts down part of Lexington Avenue for strictly local music and artistry with kid-friendly activities one weekend in early September. Costumes are encouraged. World travelers converge in Asheville each October for Moogfest, a creative tour de force harnessing the latest electronic music and lighting effects.

green dining destination Asheville restaurants care about their city and the world! The number of Certified Green Restaurants in the region is growing. With 15 greencertified restaurants, Asheville now leads as America’s Greenest Dining Destination. Asheville Independent Restaurants have been busy installing power-generating solar panels, energy-efficient lighting, and other sustainable systems for diners’ comfort and peace of mind. Look for locally produced artisan breads, cheese and meats all sourced from Western North Carolina farms.
We think you’ll notice a difference: Fruit and vegetables picked this morning taste amazing. Chances are, some of the meals during your visit here will feature that kind of freshness, thanks to the many local farms dedicated to serving the area’s restaurants, grocery stores and tailgate markets. It’s called the farm-to-table movement and helped Asheville earn America’s Best Vegetarian-Friendly Small City accolade. Look for farm-fresh delights and locally made artisan foods in the Asheville Visitor Center Gift Shop, and pick up a free copy of the Local Food Guide.
celebrating: from bakers to beer Festivals bring out the best in our region’s piping-hot food scene. Pick a few from this harvest of goodness. Asheville Artisan Bread Bakers Festival in March allows plenty of hands-on opportunities to learn new skills. The biggest of its kind in the Southeast, the Asheville Herb Festival in early May can help get your culinary garden started. With Chefs Challenges all season long, the Asheville Food & Wine Festival culminates with a premier showcase in late August. There’s comfort food for all this August at Black Mountain’s Sourwood Festival, plus dancing, crafts and gorgeous views. The Asheville Greek Festival in September invites families to explore the Greek culture through food and music. HardLox Festival brings traditional Jewish food and entertainment to Asheville’s Pack Square Park each October.
beer festivals brewing Here in Asheville we’re putting new froth on one of the world’s oldest beverages. Four years in a row, beer fans have voted us BeerCity USA. And it’s no wonder, with 11 independent – and distinctive – craft breweries in this city of 80,000. Get acquainted with the scene by booking an Asheville Brews Cruise, or pick up a brewery map at the Asheville Visitor Center and amble through town to sample the latest handcrafted brew.
