It sits proudly along our Donald Ross golf course; one that, like The Spa, continues to enjoy rave reviews. And we’re receiving similar accolades for our recently introduced Grove Park Inn Vinted Wines. Having one while enjoying our mountain view is an experience that shouldn’t be missed. 46954

touriffic town It’s easy to get engaged with Asheville, thanks to a myriad of local tours. Explore downtown on a guided vintage trolley, an urban Segway tour or catch a ride – and a comedy show – on LaZoom Tours’ vibrant, purple biodiesel bus. Beer aficionados won’t want to miss the Asheville Brews Cruise, a tour that stops at three of the area’s finest breweries for samples coupled with stories shared by brewery staff. Prefer to walk? The Historic Walking Tours of Montford and the self-guided Asheville Urban Trail both offer unique peeks into the past. Or, to see the spookier side, ghost tours highlight the haunted areas of downtown.

an event for every taste The area’s artistic spectrum ranges from soulful jazz performances to thrilling experimental theater and poetry slams. Dozen of creative events fill the area’s cultural calendar, including the LEAF – Lake Eden Arts Festival, a spirited celebration of folk arts held each May and October. August’s Mountain Dance and Folk Festival and Shindig on the Green both celebrate traditional Appalachian music and dance. Also, mark your calendars for the Annual Asheville Film Festival in November and the 31st Annual Bele Chere, the Southeast’s largest free, outdoor street festival, held in July downtown.
coming attractions
“Western North Carolina is the epicenter of some of the finest riding in the country,” Scott Olofson says. “There are a huge number of roads that are awesome riding. Some require skill, and others are great for cruising.” For riders looking for a great cruise, Olofson recommends taking a leisurely ride along the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, commonly called America’s Favorite Drive. For seasoned riders looking for a test of their skills, Olofson suggests hitting U.S. Highway 221, heading from Marion to the Blue Ridge Parkway. “Highway 221 is a nice, curvy road that goes up to Boone,” he says. “We have a lot of local knowledge about roads and rides. Many of the roads have great places to stop and enjoy the view.” Didn’t bring your bike but have a hankering for the wind blowing in your hair? Acme Motorcycles rents, sells and services bikes, and stocks a full line of helmets and riding gear.
No doubt about it, Asheville has a wealth of things to do – but that doesn’t mean there isn’t more to come. Just around the corner, the much-anticipated new Pack Square Park will add more than 6 acres of beautiful open green space to Asheville’s downtown by spring 2009. The broad green will reflect the area’s unique character with native plantings, locally designed art and performances by area entertainers.
scott olofson Motorcycle enthusiast Scott Olofson is president of Acme Motorcycles and is familiar with some of the best riding roads around.
The celebrated Asheville HATCHfest debuts in April 2009. The four-day festival showcases everything from film and fashion to architecture and technology. On the way for 2010: The Blue Ridge Parkway celebrates its diamond anniversary – that’s 75 unforgettable years.

culture club Founded in 1892 and still housed in the original site, the YMI Cultural Center is the oldest African-American community center in the country. “The YMI Cultural Center is linked to Biltmore because it was founded by African-American businessmen who approached George Vanderbilt about building an edifice in Asheville to uplift African-American people,” Harry Harrison says. “The men Vanderbilt recruited to work on his estate were members of the YMI, which stood for the Young Men’s Institute and featured educational opportunities, which was very much ahead of the times.” Today the YMI Cultural Center hosts the annual Goombay! Festival, a celebration of African and Caribbean culture drawing more than 20,000 people each August for live entertainment, food and arts and crafts.
street scene “Eating out” takes on a whole new meaning when you do it at one of Asheville’s signature sidewalk cafés.

more than a mansion
what to do PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE BILTMORE COMPANY
Most visits to Biltmore start with a tour of the Biltmore House, but they don’t have to end there. The awe-inspiring, 255-room mansion may be the centerpiece of the 8,000-acre estate, but there’s much more to explore here. Sample award-winning wines and see how they’re made at Biltmore’s winery, where you can peek in the fermentation and bottling rooms, stroll through the cellars, watch cooking demonstrations and shop in the winery’s expansive gift store. Then get a sense of what life was like at Biltmore in the 1900s at interpretive River Bend Farm. Wagon tours, craft demonstrations, farmyard animals and ice-cream cones from the creamery are just a part of the fun. Biltmore also offers guided garden walks, carriage tours, bike riding, behind-the-scenes tours of mansion rooms not open to the public and a rooftop tour that affords spectacular views of the estate.

you knead me With more than a dozen world-class spas and wellness centers, Asheville earns its reputation as a premier spa destination.
Asheville’s most notable charms are celebrated in the new Pack Square Park, now nearing completion in the city’s historic central square. Pack Square Conservancy Board Chair Carol King is excited to see the community’s vision come to life.
In fact, rejuvenation is something health-seekers have flocked to Asheville for since the 1800s, thanks to the area’s natural hot-spring mineral waters and refreshing mountain air. A wide range of holistic treatments are offered at area day spas, ranging from a river rock massage and a Pom Fruit Fetish body treatment to hot-tub soaks, lip-blooming treatments and herbal body wraps.

Try booking the treatment of your choice at an area spa for an experience that will soothe body and soul. Or better yet, book two – because what could be more romantic than a double massage?
“This has been a gathering place for residents and visitors for more than 200 years,” she says. “The new park has a host of wonderful features that will add so much to the experience of being in downtown Asheville, including a superb new main stage overlooked by a natural amphitheater that will transform performances for artists and audience alike.” The region’s rich history of arts and crafts finds expression throughout the park, ranging from locally crafted tiles on the stage and a sculptural fountain in Pack Square to historic markers sharing the fascinating story of this eclectic mountain city and its people. When completed in September, Pack Square Park promises to be a special place in every season.

creative climate
a real inspiration
a cultural mecca Rich in venues celebrating arts and culture, it’s not surprising AmericanStyle magazine ranked Asheville No. 2 among small cities on their 2008 list of Top 25 Arts Destinations. The area radiates with creativity, thanks to the more than 4,000 artists who draw inspiration from the surrounding mountains and proudly call this region “home.” Many area galleries and studios encourage people to come in and witness arts in action. You can find galleries galore, from Historic Biltmore Village to the hip and happening River Arts District to the heart of downtown Black Mountain and Weaverville. Add to that film, music and media arts, and you’ll see why the area draws those with a creative bent.

Art is everywhere in this mountain town – from the stunning architecture to the spellbinding symphonic compositions performed by the Asheville Symphony Orchestra. You just can’t help but be amazed – and inspired – by this creative climate. Expect to be enthralled at any performance at the Diana Wortham Theatre. Located in the Pack Square Cultural District, this intimate, 500-seat venue presents opera, music, theater and dance. You’ll find more live productions and experimental theater at local stage companies and playhouses throughout the region. And if literature is your passion, take a peek into the area’s storied past. Thomas Wolfe, Carl Sandburg and contemporary author Charles Frazier all found their muse in the area.

christo and more The Asheville Art Museum has been a mustsee site for years, but 2009 is one for the records. In February, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, famous for their environmental, installation art, including The Gates in New York City’s Central Park, will cap off the museum’s distinguished artist series “smArt speak.” Can’t make it? No worries. Christo’s awe-inspiring visual arts will be on display through early May 2009. In addition to showcasing the very best of 20thand 21st-century American art, cultural aficionados can enjoy a full calendar of special exhibitions.
a heart for art Asheville and the arts go hand in hand, and it’s easy to see why. There’s a creative vibe that’s evident in all corners of the city, particularly in the newly emerging River Arts District. “There’s something about this city – artists feel drawn here,” Jonas Gerard says. “You can find just about anything. There’s an abundance of ceramic artists as well as glass artists, steel welders, abstract painters and landscape painters. The River Arts District has more than 90 artists spread out in various buildings.” Gerard’s specialty is large, colorful abstract paintings. He says it didn’t take long to realize Asheville was the place he belonged. “Asheville understood who I am and welcomed me,” Gerard says. “It’s almost as if Asheville knew I was coming. I was extremely lucky to have found this place.”
listen to the music To experience yet another form of passionate expression where the area reigns supreme, take note of the sounds around you. In 2008, The Orange Peel Social Aid & Pleasure Club was named one of the top five rock venues in the nation – yes, the nation – by none other than Rolling Stone magazine.
jonas gerard Artist Jonas Gerard’s studio is located in the River Arts District, where he paints large abstract canvases.
The reunited Smashing Pumpkins played a remarkable nine-show run at the landmark club, choosing Asheville and San Francisco as stops on their two-city U.S. tour. Catch a live performance at the many intimate clubs, bars and brewpubs, representing genres from jazz to Appalachian mountain music.

head for the hills Outdoor adventure abounds in and around Asheville, and with roughly 9 million visitors a year, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is clearly a favorite place to find it. The park will, in fact, be part of a new Ken Burns documentary called The National Parks: America’s Best Idea that will debut in fall 2009. And the timing couldn’t be better – the 500,000-acre park will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2009. The Smokies still deliver some of the most jaw-dropping mountain vistas in the country. Experience the wonder of the mountains: fish for the elusive mountain trout, picnic on a scenic bald or just enjoy the simple pleasure of a walk in the woods. Speaking of parks, don’t miss a jaunt on the picturesque Blue Ridge Parkway, which celebrates its own 75th anniversary in 2010.

spinning your wheels So many mountain biking opportunities exist in the Asheville area that cycling enthusiasts actually move here to take advantage of them. Such was the case with Eric Krause. “I had come here specifically to race and, after the races, I spent time exploring and found so many trails. I had to keep coming back,” Krause says. “Of all the cycling locations across the country, I chose to move to Asheville. The city’s progressive culture sealed the deal.” Visit Krause’s new cycling shop, BioWheels, to rent a bike, pick up some maps and get some advice on where to hit the trails. “We usually send people who are just starting to explore the area to Bent Creek,” Krause says. “It’s an easy drive from town and has 40 miles of trails that aren’t too difficult. The Davidson River area by Brevard is where the big epic rides are with big elevation changes.”
tee time Where can you find awe-inspiring views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, lush emerald fairways and Tiger Woods? That’s right – only in Asheville, where the plethora of beautiful, mountaintop courses make the area a golfer’s paradise. As for Tiger Woods, the mega-champion has chosen to design and build his first golf course in the United States here in the area. Woods’ new course joins more than 20 championship courses in the region, several of which were designed in the 1920s by legendary Scottish architect Donald Ross, the father of American golf.
In 2007, BioWheels completely renovated an art deco building in Asheville’s business district that includes 35 green features.

great small towns
black mountain feels like home Tucked away in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains, just 20 minutes from downtown Asheville, is the quaint community of Black Mountain. The town of nearly 8,000 is known for its friendly folks, excellent restaurants, inviting bed-and-breakfasts and delightful shops. Local merchants and artisans sell everything from handmade quilts and pottery to ironwork and custom-made musical instruments. Join a community sing-along, hear stories about the area’s early settlers or ratchet up your creative juices by taking a single-day class on building a traditional drystone wall – all at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts.

wind down in weaverville If relaxation is on your to-do list, there’s no better place to wind down than Weaverville. This town of 2,500 is the perfect place to hide away with that special someone in a romantic bedand-breakfast, or meander along streets lined with antique shops, galleries, working studios and palate-pleasing restaurants. Feast on fresh mountain trout in a rustic atmosphere at the historic Weaverville Milling Co. Restaurant, which served as a grain mill from 1912 to 1965. Indulge in a therapeutic massage or an aromatherapy bath at one of Weaverville’s spas. Or pack a picnic and saunter over to Lake Louise Park. Weaverville is also the birthplace of North Carolina’s Civil War Gov. Zebulon B. Vance, and visitors can explore the restored homestead’s grounds, house, outbuildings and visitor center just a few miles outside of town.

wearable art All art doesn’t necessarily begin with a blank canvas or a ball of clay. Sometimes it starts with a piece of fabric and an artist’s vision, blossoming into a beautiful piece of art – wearable art, that is. “Art to wear really fits into Asheville because it’s such a creative city with a lot of energy,” explains Matt Chambers, gallery director of Bellagio Art To Wear in Historic Biltmore Village and Bellagio Everyday downtown. The shops represent more than 500 talented artists, each with an individual identity. Cutting-edge designs that are literally fit to the individual are a specialty of Ship to Shore, where no two pieces of clothing are exactly the same. Likewise, Blue and Jewels That Dance each offer one-of-a-kind jewelry designs by talented goldsmiths.

an asheville original As an artist’s hub, Asheville prides itself as a home to more than 50 studios and galleries. From a visitor’s standpoint, this translates into an unbelievable amount of places to shop for fabulous art objects. In the River Arts District, you can step into the studios of the more than 60 artists who contribute to the cosmic “cool factor” of the vicinity. The Folk Art Center, the most popular attraction on the Blue Ridge Parkway, showcases a creative collection of Appalachian crafts, both functional and decorative. The Grove Arcade, one of Asheville’s architectural jewels, anchors the countless other galleries and shops throughout the city and offers a vivid variety of original art and handmade crafts. So, rest assured you’ll discover something uniquely Asheville.
antiques and boutiques Whether an avid shopper or a casual consumer, you’re sure to leave with your shopping bags filled to the brim. From expansive antique barns to locally owned boutiques, the area’s shopping districts embody the funky and the distinctive. Take a stroll down eclectic Lexington Avenue. Not only can you enjoy good food or drink, but you can also check out organic clothing stores and chic eco-friendly thrift and consignment shops. The effervescent energy of West Asheville appeals to anyone who strolls down Haywood Road, whether you’re in need of hiking gear, vintage clothing or an impossible-to-find album. Brick sidewalks, inviting cafes and charming shops line the streets of Historic Biltmore Village, a fashion mecca adjacent to the entrance of Biltmore. Here you can find decorative and functional crafts – linens fit for royalty, a whimsical teapot, designer yarns, handmade wedding rings and more. Many businesses are housed in historic cottages. A highlight of the summer is the Village Art & Craft fair held in early August. Your problem won’t be finding the perfect keepsakes – it will be figuring out how to stuff it all into your suitcase for the trek home!

love the land We believe that the best food is grown by neighbors. And luckily, we have great neighbors. The area is surrounded by family-run farms and food producers, and many of their veggies, herbs and meats turn up in local restaurants. Enjoying the best of the area’s bounty doesn’t require a day of driving from farm to farm, however. Just stop by a few of the more than 40 tailgate markets, including the new Asheville City Market, where locals sell an array of tantalizing organic produce and other tasty goods. You’ll get an authentic taste of Western North Carolina and the opportunity to chat with the people who bring the farm to your table.
in the swim of things If you order mountain trout at an Asheville restaurant, chances are it came from nearby Sunburst Trout Co. Family-owned and operated for three generations, Sunburst has been supplying locally raised trout and trout products to area restaurants since 1948. “It’s seldom that I go into an Asheville restaurant and there isn’t some mention on the menu of the fact they support local farmers,” Sally Eason says. Eason’s father, Dick Jennings, founded the trout farm, and today her sons, Wes and Ben, work there, too. The family is proud to be a link in the growing farm-to-table movement that is synonymous with Asheville. “More and more customers are asking where their food comes from – if it’s wild or farm-raised – and providing local products helps chefs guarantee the customer the product was plucked from mountain waters the day before,” Eason says. “Very few places can offer fish that fresh.”
pints a-plenty Something’s brewing in Asheville – porters, pilsners and ales of all sorts. Ashevillians have mastered the art of craft beer, attributing part of their palatable taste to the fresh mountain water. A total of seven breweries now contribute to the area’s lively brewing scene.
sally eason Sally Eason is president and owner of Sunburst Trout Co., which supplies fresh fish to local restaurants.
Highland Brewing Co. began producing ales more than a decade ago, while the newer, organiccertified Pisgah Brewing Co. in Black Mountain has received honors for its handcrafted beers. Most of the Asheville-area brewpubs offer tours and tastings.
