PHOTO COURTESY OF THE BILTMORE COMPANY
The awe-inspiring, 8,000-acre Biltmore always promises a fresh welcome. This year, new experiences provide intimate connections to the Vanderbilt family’s personal history and agricultural interests. George Vanderbilt was a bachelor when he first opened Biltmore House in 1895, and visitors today finally can see the suite of four rooms from which the house became a family home. It was here that his wife, Edith, gave birth to their daughter, Cornelia, and also where Vanderbilt’s grandsons were born some 25 years later. Visitors also will enjoy the new Antler Hill Village, an entertainment area joining Biltmore’s winery and the interpretive River Bend Farm.

birdwatching breaks While Ventures nature travel company founder and Asheville resident Simon Thompson has led birding trips all over the world, he says adventures here can be just as rewarding. Here are three of his top local spots for birdwatching. Be sure to bring binoculars, a current field guide, and a notebook and pencil to record your observations.

pure relaxation Asheville has been a destination for rejuvenation and health since the 1800s, when the wealthy from northern climates first discovered the beneficial healing powers of hot springs. The area’s longstanding reputation as a font of wellness has remained key to the region’s livelihood. Today we are home to more than a dozen spas, offering a broad spectrum of services, such as luxurious massages, aromatherapy, Reiki, mineral soaks and herbal wraps – something for everyone in need of the magic of a spa experience. Visit ExploreAsheville.com and search “spa packages” for a variety of options and deals.
The birding can be terrific from spring through late fall. If spring has just passed in Asheville, you still are bound to catch both the wildflowers and the birds as you climb the spruce-fir zone atop the peaks. Look for: Wild Turkey, Pileated Woodpecker, Red Crossbill, Red-breasted Nuthatch and up to 12 species of warblers, including Blackburnian, Cerulean and Canada
North Carolina Arboretum Humans aren’t the only visitors who enjoy the botanical diversity of this 434-acre garden nestled in the Pisgah National Forest. More than 100 species of birds have been spotted here, as well! Look for: Broad-winged Hawk, Scarlet Tanager, Hooded and Kentucky Warblers
Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary, Asheville Just five minutes north of downtown Asheville, Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary is a haven from the daily hubbub and a great spot to learn more about the seasonal birding in the area. Guided bird walks are held the first Saturday of each month. Look for: Baltimore and Orchard Orioles, Yellow and Yellowthroated Warblers, Eastern Kingbird, Warbling Vireo
what a difference a day makes
For more on local birding and Simon Thompson, visit www.birdventures.com
While there’s no end of things to do in the immediate area, we’re also a great home base for exploring the endless offerings of Western North Carolina. Day trips can vary from taking a zip-line tour through the treetops in nearby Bryson City to immersing yourself in the rich culture of the Cherokee at Oconaluftee Indian Village. Hitch a ride on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad into deep river gorges or expand your horizons with a hike up Chimney Rock. We’ve imagined all sorts of adventures for you: Check out our sample itineraries at ExploreAsheville.com. ExploreAsheville.com

discover downtown irresistible energy Asheville’s downtown core pulsates with an undeniable electricity. Feeding its rhythm are drummers, street performers and live music emanating from the district’s entertainment venues. Vibrant visuals abound through gallery tours, art walks and public sculpture. Smell the aromatic magic floating from al fresco dining spaces. Catch local musicians spontaneously tuning up on street corners, the occasional juggler or human statue at Pack Square Park. Explore the many interesting shops that line the bustling sidewalks. Add to that a full calendar of organized festivals, and you’ll find that the heart of our city never skips a beat.
Asheville ranks as one of the top 10 cities in the South, according to readers of Southern Living magazine. SOUTHERN LIVING READERS’ CHOICE AWARDS (2008)

savor the scene Come to our downtown table and you’ll discover why this is the hub for our Foodtopian Society. From Caribbean to French to Indian, from Southern to Chinese to vegetarian, Asheville’s urban culinary pot melds into something beautiful and satisfying. We love our farmers, and we bring their fresh produce and goods to the feast (often straight from the farm or from one of the city’s many tailgate markets) whenever we can. Our downtown dining establishments, many with outside seating, allow you to never miss a beat on the street. Learn more at FoodtopianSociety.com.

feel the artbeat The Asheville area’s art scene is both historic and cutting edge, and downtown is an excellent starting point to begin exploring all it has to offer. Rich in public art, galleries, studios and Art Deco architecture, downtown is a visual delight in itself, also providing opportunities to enrich your creative knowledge. Explore our avant-garde origins and creative legacy at the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center and the Asheville Art Museum. Get a taste of our bohemian art scene on Lexington Avenue.

great gathering place Downtown is the place to be for several of our community’s largest events, and that status only has been elevated with the unveiling of our newest gathering spot in the city’s center – Pack Square Park. Just a few of its features are a main stage, a sculptural fountain, 2 acres of lush green space and Splasheville, the interactive water feature. Dozens of creative events fill the area’s cultural calendar, and just a few of those happening downtown include Bele Chere, the largest street festival in the Southeast; LAAF - Lexington Avenue Arts and Fun Festival; Goombay! Festival; and Shindig on the Green. ExploreAsheville.com

connect to creativity
amplified attractions Let the music guide you and discover the lure that has attracted Bob Dylan, The Beastie Boys, Sugarland, soprano Kathleen Battle, B.B. King and scores of other top artists who have chosen to perform in this area’s intimate settings. Rolling Stone magazine knighted The Orange Peel Social Aid & Pleasure Club one of America’s top five rock clubs. Grey Eagle in the River Arts District has launched many a singer/ songwriter’s career. Diana Wortham Theatre and Thomas Wolfe Auditorium offer warm settings for dance, music and theater. Asheville also has its own symphony orchestra and lyric opera ensemble. New venues are joining the chorus, too, such as White Horse Black Mountain in Black Mountain. Our refrain bears repeating: We’re a music lover’s dream.

artists show and tell We’ve been called the Paris of the South in part because we embrace our visual artists. Not only do they fill our galleries, studios and shops with dynamic art (repeatedly positioning Asheville as one of the top arts destinations in the Southeast), but they love to meet our visitors. For example, more than 100 artists in the River Arts District participate in two studio strolls annually, with many welcoming guests year round. Other events – such as Asheville Downtown Gallery Association’s Art Walks, the RiverSculpture Outdoor Art Exhibit and the East of Asheville Studio Stroll – also bring together working artists and patrons. Witness demonstrations of traditional Appalachian art and craft at the Folk Art Center. And don’t miss the biannual Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands and the annual Village Art & Craft Fair at Historic Biltmore Village.
resounding legacy
delightful drama
One of our greatest creative pioneers was Dr. Bob Moog, an Asheville resident, who revolutionized electronic music with the development of the first modular synthesizer in 1964. Moog left a legacy carried on today through his company, Moog Music, and the Bob Moog Foundation. The foundation’s future plans include the Moogseum, which will house an archival center, interactive instrument-based exhibits, performance space and more. Nearly every contemporary piece of music and some of the world’s greatest performers benefit from Moog’s work. Walk our streets. You’ll still feel his unique vibe.
If all the world’s a stage, our community is a leading thespian. From experimental theater to established beloved plays, we have drama of all kinds – Montford Park Players, Asheville Community Theatre and Diana Wortham Theatre at Pack Place, home of the Asheville Lyric Opera and Asheville Bravo Concerts. The North Carolina Stage Company performs a range of popular works, and its No Shame Theatre often features audience members as actors – always with surprising results. Regional theater is also abundant with the Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre and Flat Rock Playhouse, named North Carolina’s State Theater. ExploreAsheville.com

embrace the outdoors it’s in our nature Our natural environment is nothing short of awe-inspiring, making it the primary lure for visitors. People come from near and far to experience our magnificent mountain forests, pristine parks, verdant gardens, spectacularly scenic byways and jaw-dropping vistas provided by the Great Smoky Mountains, Pisgah National Forest, Blue Ridge Parkway, Chimney Rock State Park, Grandfather Mountain, The North Carolina Arboretum and Asheville’s Botanical Gardens. Mother Nature has made this region one of her favorite spots and extends her welcome for you to partake of all it has to offer.

unforgettable treks Asheville is “the perfect base camp for hiking the East’s highest peaks,” says Randy Johnson, author of Hiking North Carolina, Hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway and other books. Here are Johnson’s top picks for hikes in our area, based on skill level:
Easy: Craggy Gardens Trail
make a splash One of the most common words around here is wheeeeeeee!!! Our rivers, streams and lakes offer cool mountain water fun. Multiple area outfitters can take you whitewater rafting, canoeing and kayaking on one of our scenic blueways, such as the French Broad, Nantahala, Pigeon, Cheoah and Nolichucky rivers. If you’re up for a different thrill, experience a natural water slide – Sliding Rock – where you sit down and let the water sweep you (and your cares) away. For more relaxed aquatic adventures, we have many old-fashioned swimming holes and scenic waterfalls to discover.
Go just north of Asheville to Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 364.5, and the easy trail rises to a picnic shelter built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Head left there, up to spectacular open mountaintop meadows. Distance: Round trip, less than one mile
Moderate: Graveyard Fields Go south of Asheville to Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 418.8 and take a paved trail on the right side of the overlook down to the river. Go right to awesome Yellowstone Falls. Retrace back along the river to a signed junction. There, you may continue to Upper Falls and back, or go left across the bridge and back to the parking area. Distance: Three miles including Upper Falls; two miles without it
Expert: Grandfather Mountain Go north of Asheville to Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 305 for North Carolina’s high-adventure hike. After the Mile-High Swinging Bridge, hike the highest summits – all nearly 6,000 feet – where ladders and cables scale cliffs. Distance: To cross the first peak is one mile. You may also take the trail to Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 299.9, which is 5.5 miles.
swing into scenery Our region offers some of the best and the most beautiful mountain golf around, replete with aweinspiring views and lush emerald fairways. The area’s plethora of scenic courses includes several designed by legendary Scottish architect Donald Ross, the father of American golf. Golfers of all levels find the game especially enjoyable when it’s part of one of our valuable packages that combine accommodations with an unforgettable golf experience. See ExploreAsheville.com for more information on golf packages and a directory of local courses.

sustainable sustenance Our community nurtures the connections between field and table, chef and farmer, customer and local business. The interwoven nature of our Foodtopian Society means innovative chefs scour tailgate markets and develop friendships with local farmers, who, in turn, help fill our tables with glorious spreads of fresh vegetables and fruits; mountain trout; farm-fresh eggs and honey; and beef, poultry and pork raised right in our collective back yards. Artisanal breads, hand-ladled cheeses and Biltmore wines remind us of George Vanderbilt’s legacy of sustainable agriculture in our region. There’s a seat waiting for you. Come join us at the table, won’t you?
Once you’ve tasted our local flavor, you’ll want to take it home with you. Thanks to the more than 50 farmers, tailgate markets and many area shops, you won’t have to look far. The Asheville Shop at the Asheville Visitor Center also has a great selection of tasty homegrown treats such as these:

civic pride, liquified Asheville recently earned the title of Beer City USA, and it’s no wonder. The area is home to nine craft breweries, each with its own independent flavor profile. On any given day, about 50 local brews can be enjoyed on draft and in bottles in Asheville. Asheville Brews Cruise offers beer geeks a behind-the-scenes brewery tour. The area is also home to a world-renowned specialty beer store, Bruisin’ Ales, and several beer festivals including Brewgrass and Winter Warmer. So, it is no surprise that sipping suds has become one of our favorite pastimes. For a complete list of breweries, visit ExploreAsheville.com.
