Plenty of Oompah Grab your oboe and bassoon and join the festivities at the 19th annual Great American Band Festival. The music celebration is set for June 12-15, 2008, with performance venues at Centre College, Constitution Square, Farmers Bank on Main Street and Weisiger Park. More than a dozen bands usually take part, entertaining crowds of more than 30,000 during the weekend. Bands that have performed in the past include the Danville Pipe Band, Dixie Power Trio, Great Olympian Traditional Jazz Band, Kentucky United Pipe Band and the United States Army Field Band.

Liz Was Here It was in August and September of 1956 when Elizabeth Taylor stayed in Danville for six weeks to film the Civil War epic Raintree County. The film premiered a year later in October 1957, focusing attention on the beauty of the Kentucky countryside. Other stars of the picture included Montgomery Clift, Eva Marie Saint, Lee Marvin and Agnes Moorehead. In 2007, a two-week Raintree County Festival took place in Danville to celebrate the film’s 50th anniversary. One of the highlights was the premiere at Pioneer Playhouse of Catherine Bush’s play A Jarful of Fireflies, which focused on the filming of Raintree County 50 years ago.
Host With the Most Wow, this is a happening place. Centre College in Danville features a campus where something always seems to be going on. In fact, the college of 1,175 students boasts that it hosts more than 2,000 events each year, ranging from a paintball club meeting to a U.S. vice presidential debate in 2000. This prestigious college has a 115-acre campus with 67 buildings, 13 of which are on the National Register of Historic Places – and some of the buildings date back to when Centre was founded in 1819. The college was recently listed in U.S. News & World Report as one of the top 50 most affordable liberal arts colleges in the country.
The Golden Thrones Not many places celebrate toilets, but Penn’s Store does it with pride. The longtime grocery business in tiny Gravel Switch hosts an annual Great Outhouse Blowout, which has been held on the first Saturday in October since 1995. The event features teams of at least five people racing for 100 yards with uniquely designed outhouses mounted on rickshaw-type contraptions. Penn’s Store – the oldest country store in the nation still operated by the same family – dates back to 1845 and still does not have running water or plumbing. The Great Outhouse Blowout celebrates the installation of the store’s first toilet – a privy – in the early 1990s.

Fast Facts Q Danville has been featured in Time magazine as one of Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most successful small towns. Q McDowell House and Apothecary is the historic home of Dr. Ephraim McDowell, who removed a 22.5-pound tumor from a female patient without anesthesia in 1809. Q Boyle County and Danville high schools have won 15 state football championships. Q Known as the City of Firsts, Danville was home to the first college and law school west of the Alleghenies and the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first state-supported school for the deaf.
The Civil War Rages On More than 4,000 re-enactors travel to Perryville each October to stage the Battle of Perryville, which originally took place in 1862. The fierce fighting killed or wounded 7,500 Union and Confederate soldiers, and the 2008 re-enactment will be the 146th anniversary. Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site hosts the event each year, and a museum and several monuments are also located on its grounds. The site averages around 100,000 visitors throughout the year.

owned shops, or just sitting on a bench or relaxing in any number of cafés. Scenic drives on back roads throughout the area lead to fascinating sites where you’ll see and meet a diverse array of folks who make Danville-Boyle County one of the friendliest places in the country.
Day 1 8:00 A.M. THE CITY COMES ALIVE Pick up hot coffee and fresh pastries at Burke’s Bakery (121 W. Main St., between Second and First), which is known for its goodies to go. Stroll up Main Street to the gazebo at Constitution Square State Historic Site, the birthplace of Kentucky’s statehood, where you can sit, enjoy breakfast and watch the town come alive. 9:30 A.M. A WALK BACK IN TIME Visit the sites at the three-acre Constitution Square State Historic Site. In addition to its famous courthouse, the park is home to a number of historic buildings – Grayson’s Tavern, a gathering place for many of the early advocates of statehood; a Presbyterian meeting house; a two-room schoolhouse; the first post office west of the Allegheny
Mountains; and a formidable historic jailhouse constructed with 9-inch-thick logs. Governor’s Square features a bronze statue of the two figures depicted on the seal and flag of Kentucky, with bronze plaques honoring every governor of Kentucky. Also be sure to stop by the McDowell House and Apothecary Shop (125 S. Second St.), where you’ll learn the fascinating story of the world’s first abdominal surgery, performed by Dr. Ephraim McDowell – without the use of anesthesia. NOON: A TASTE OF HOME Take a break from the sites and enjoy a homestyle lunch at Joshua’s Corner Café (on Church Street between West Main Street and West Walnut). Try favorite lunch specialties such as oven-fried chicken, meatloaf, mashed potatoes and corn pudding. 1:30 P.M. SHOP TILL YOU DROP Work off lunch and pop into the variety of specialty shops and galleries along Main Street in downtown Danville. Some popular stops include Thoroughbred Threads for custom printed and embroidered gifts and clothing; Carol’s Bridal & Gift Shop for wedding gowns and formalwear;

D
owntown has become one of Danville’s most vibrant neighborhoods, thanks to the conversion of empty second-story spaces into loft apartments and condominiums – cool spaces that combine small-town charm with urban amenities. “We’re talking about second-story homes with amenities that would rival anything in San Francisco or New York,” says Charlie Raffay, manager and owner of Redwood Property Management. “Downtown is a really cool place to live.” The initiative to find new uses for those unused upper stories is being led by the Heart of Danville Main Street Program, which aims to revitalize the neighborhood while preserving its historic character. With residents living above, stores and restaurants will be attracted to the spaces at street level, creating an exciting, livable neighborhood where residents can conveniently walk to work, entertainment and shops. “There’s been an effort to breathe new life into downtown,” said Dr. Gareth Barkin, Ph.D., a professor at nearby Centre College. Barkin recently leased an apartment on Main Street that reminds him of living in the San Francisco Bay area. “If you look out the window of my apartment, it looks like you live in a city.
The dream is that the rest of the street will follow,” Barkin says. Downtown living is especially attractive to college students and professionals who move to Danville from large cities to pursue educational and work opportunities, said Lisa LeDonne. She and her husband, Tim, restored and renovated the building and created the 2,300square-foot “Boston-style” apartment where Barkin lives. “Local businesses are recruiting people from other areas of the country and even other countries,” Lisa LeDonne says. “We feel we are on the cusp of something huge.” The building was in poor condition when the LeDonnes purchased it. Its upper two stories had been vacant for 90 years. Their restoration was so thorough and historically accurate that today the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. “When we started, people said we were crazy, there was nothing like this downtown,” she says. “Now people say ‘Wow! When are you going to do another one?’” Historic touches such as exposed brick and original windows – combined with such modern conveniences as stainless steel appliances, environmentally friendly bamboo flooring and a custom steel staircase – add a unique feel to his
downtown apartment, Barkin says. The area’s historic buildings make it possible to blend the historic and the new, Raffay says. His condominiums feature exposed brick, 17-foot ceilings, hardwood floors, stainless appliances and whirlpool spas in the master bath. “Great urban views and convenience – that’s what people are looking for,” Raffay says.

olks in Danville know their way around paintbrushes, hammers and rakes, and they put these skills – and many more – to good use throughout the year for a variety of volunteer projects. But nowhere is Danville’s community spirit more on display than during the annual Day of Caring, when hundreds of volunteers hit the streets and tackle dozens of different chores – all in an effort to make Danville and Boyle County a better place to live. “We’re a little place, and we had almost 600 people who participated in 2007,” says Janie Pass, executive director of the Heart of Kentucky United Way. “We had 50 different project sites spread across the community.” The one-day event – which has taken place every September for the past 13 years – brings together teams from area businesses and other community-minded people tackling projects ranging from courthouse-square cleanup to landscaping at historic homes. Employers routinely give people the day off, which Pass says adds to the event’s growing impact. “Our employers around here are just incredible,” she says. Planning for the Day of Caring begins long before the big day. United Way staff members work with other organizations to get a list of projects that need to be done. They compile that information and determine how many people will be required for each task. While the to-do list grows every year, so does the volunteer base.
“It’s amazing,” Pass says. “Everybody really looks forward to it, and we get a huge cross section of people from all levels of the community. Everybody works side by side, shoulder to shoulder, to make Danville the place that it is.” Danville’s community spirit spills over into other areas as well, including student mentoring at area schools, disasterrelief preparedness training and more, adds Paula Fowler Kilby, executive director of the Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce. “This is a very visionary, hands-on community,” Kilby says. “People here like to be involved, and they like to rally around an issue and help resolve it.” She points to the county’s Emergency Medical Services personnel as an example. “They have taken it upon themselves to get training in bacterial and germ warfare from the FBI, things that very few emergency service personnel in the state, or anywhere, do,” she says. “It’s an attitude, a way of thinking, that most people have here. They want our community and county to thrive, and they get involved to make sure that it does.” Pass says that some of her counterparts in other counties have a special way of referring to Danville. “When I go to meetings, they ask how things are in ‘the bubble,’” she says. “They can’t believe what happens here – the cooperation between business, industry, nonprofits. They just shake their heads. We are so blessed.”

W
hen country singer Eddie Montgomery (half of the popular duo Montgomery Gentry) celebrated his hit single “Lucky Man” topping the charts in August 2007, it didn’t surprise him that several folks from Boyle County showed up to congratulate him at the No. 1 party in Nashville. After all, he was born and raised in Boyle County, and it’s where he still lives today. “I’ve had unbelievable support from everybody there,” Montgomery says. “It was great that they got to come hang out and see what I do.” “Lucky Man” was Montgomery Gentry’s 10th Top 5 single and its third to go to No. 1. It was the second hit DA N V I L L E
single from the duo’s fifth studio album, Some People Change. Born in Danville in 1963, Montgomery grew up in Perryville and attended Danville High School. “My mom and dad were musicians, so we moved around a bit. Eventually me and my brother [country artist John Michael Montgomery] moved up toward Lexington,” Montgomery recalls. “But as they say, you always come back home.” Montgomery performed with his brother for a while after John Michael Montgomery landed a record deal. In 1999, he got his own big break by teaming up with friend Troy Gentry to form Montgomery Gentry.
“I had played with Troy a bunch, and we both said, ‘We ought to be a duo,’” Montgomery says. “We’re very close, and so are our families.” The pair won Vocal Duo of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards in 2000 and have since achieved considerable fame with a string of hit songs, including “Lonely and Gone,” “She Couldn’t Change Me,” “My Town” and “Something to Be Proud Of.” Their latest single, “What Do Ya Think About That,” rose to the Top 20 in its first three weeks on the air. Between tour dates across the country and traveling overseas to perform for U.S. troops in Iraq, Montgomery remains a big supporter of his hometown region. He works with the Danville fire and police departments to organize celebrity bus tours each year to raise money for the Christmas charity Toys for Tots. “I never want to see a kid wake up Christmas morning without a toy,” Montgomery says. “We’ve brought Kenny Chesney’s and Britney Spears’ buses up, and people bring a toy or $5 to walk through the buses. I sign autographs and take pictures.” In October 2007, Montgomery Gentry began work on a new album, and the duo plans to go on tour again in March 2008. In the meantime, Montgomery is happy to just be “living a dream.” “First, I want to thank the man upstairs. This has been unbelievable,” he says. Of course, he also tips his signature black hat to the folks back home. “Boyle County is God’s country – everybody takes care of each other,” Montgomery says. “Perryville put up signs that say ‘Eddie Montgomery’s Town.’ Every time I drive by them, I get a little emotional.” I M AG E S DA N V I L L E . ou might say that the art of winemaking runs in Dominique Brousseau’s family. Her great-great-great-great-grandmother started a winery in France in the 1600s (it’s still operating under different ownership), and Brousseau is the head winemaker at her family’s Chateau du Vieux Corbeau Winery at Danville’s Old Crow Inn. At the tender age of 28, she’s the youngest winemaker in the state. “Originally at our winery, my brother André was the winemaker, and I worked with him,” Brousseau says. “When he left, I took over. I’ve taken winemaking classes in California, and I’ve also learned a lot from the oldest winemaker in Kentucky at Broad Run Vineyard and Winery in Louisville. It was the women in my family who did the winemaking in France, so I’m carrying on the torch.” Brousseau’s wines have won a number of awards. Her blackberry wine
won Best Fruit Wine in Kentucky at the Kentucky Derby Festival in 2006. “We have eight different wines for sale right now, and six to eight more that are aging and will soon be ready for sale,” Brousseau says. “Two of our most popular wines are Vidal Blanc and Concord, and our Rio Samba blend is also very popular. All three have won awards.” In college, Brousseau studied computer science, chemistry and art – a combination of subjects she feels suits her profession. “Wine is a combination of science and art,” she explains. “Unlike hard liquor, wine is like a food product because it can spoil. A lot of my job is cleaning and sterilization. The art comes into play with blending flavors.” Chateau du Vieux Corbeau Winery offers complimentary wine tastings Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tours of the winery are also available with advance request. Christian Music Festival Rocks Danville
N
early 5,000 people converge on downtown Danville each August for Rock Da’Ville, a free music event sponsored by churches and businesses in central Kentucky. The second annual Rock Da’Ville in 2007 featured 17 Christian rock, hiphop and alternative bands, including well-known artists such as Seventh Day Slumber, Grits, One Day Less and Poor Man’s Riches. “It’s a last hurrah for kids before they go back to school,” says Julie Wagner, executive director at the Heart of Danville Main Street program. “It’s gone over really well. Last year the National Guard had a rock-climbing wall, and we had skateboard ramps and several vendors.” The idea for Rock Da’Ville originated three years ago when a staff member suggested incorporating a Christian rock band as part of Heart of Danville’s summer concert series. “Several churches got involved with ideas and were willing to fund it,”
Wagner says. “I had no idea it would turn into a big festival.” More than a dozen area churches gave money to put on the 2007 event, and 40 more helped with organizing and volunteering. “It’s definitely a community event,” Wagner says. “We had hundreds of volunteers, and the police and fire departments were involved. It’s a great opportunity for the community to work together.”
Rock Da’Ville benefits the Danville community in several ways, but one of its biggest objectives is to reach out to the area’s young people. “This is a step in the right direction to get young people involved in the community and give them good memories,” Wagner says. “And when you have 5,000 people in town, that definitely brings tourist dollars.” The 2008 Rock Da’Ville is slated for Aug. 16.

Trail To Become a Reality
D
anville residents have long dreamed of having a recreational trail along Clark’s Run creek. Thanks to an organization called CREEC (Clark’s Run Environmental and Educational Corp.), plans for a trail are now in the works. “People have been trying to get a trail put in since the ’90s,” says Malissa McAlister, vice president of CREEC. “We still have some outstanding grant applications, but we will probably build the trail in phases. We hope in the next
putting in bird feeders to attract different species of birds.” The Clark’s Run waterway is significant historically because it was a drinking-water source for early settlers to the area. It is naturally significant as a habitat corridor for terrestrial and aquatic wildlife. CREEC was organized in 2005 to preserve and protect the Clark’s Run watershed by enhancing water quality and educating the public. Developing the recreational trail is just one of the organization’s many projects. “We’re working with the Dix River Watershed Council to get water sampling data from the creek, and we will make recommendations based on the findings,” McAlister says. “We’re also working with local volunteers to enhance the riparian buffer along the sides of the creek. It is being choked out by honeysuckle.” CREEC members hope the recreational trail will link the community to the creek and encourage citizens to make efforts to improve and protect it. McDowell’s Home Gets a Face-Lift W
hen Dr. Ephraim McDowell examined patient Jane Todd Crawford in 1809, she thought she was pregnant with twins. On the contrary, McDowell found she was carrying a large ovarian tumor. Crawford traveled three days on horseback to McDowell’s Danville home, and on Christmas morning, 1809, McDowell successfully removed the 22.5-pound tumor from the woman without the use of anesthetics. It was the first successful surgery of its kind in the world and caused McDowell to become known as the “Father of Abdominal Surgery.” Today, Danville visitors can tour McDowell’s 200-year-old home and see the very room where the historic operation took place. “The home is furnished as it would have been when the McDowells lived there, with a piano, pictures, chairs, china, silver and portraits that belonged to the family,” says Alberta Moynahan, assistant director of the McDowell House Museum Inc. In 2007, the McDowell House underwent a complete restoration that included installation of a geothermal air conditioner, new electrical wiring, interior and exterior painting, reparation of shutters, replacement of rotted window sills and several other projects. “It started in the basement. Water was getting in, and we found we had a very nice mushroom crop growing down there,” Moynahan says. “New drains had to be installed, and then other things kept coming up.” The restoration was funded in part by a capital campaign the organization spearheaded in 1999. A grant from the state and a Save America’s Treasures grant from the federal government also helped with funding. “We had to match those grants, so we worked to get donations,” Moynahan says. “Descendants of Dr. McDowell and several banks, businesses and individuals have been very generous.” – Stories by Jessica Mozo

T
hree nonprofit and service organizations that serve Danville and Boyle County have moved into new facilities that will allow them to fulfill their missions more effectively. These new digs allow Pioneer Vocational Industrial Services, the University of Kentucky Boyle County Extension Service and Heritage Hospice to offer even more services to the community. “This is our home,” says Janelle Lane Wheeler, executive director of Heritage Hospice. “We have a history here and deep roots.” The hospice – which outgrew its previous space – held a ribbon-cutting in July for its beautiful 16,000-square-foot building. The new facility provides plenty of space for group training in its community room, and it includes an art gallery where the public is invited to view and purchase works by local artists. The new facility, at 120 Enterprise Drive in Danville, also features a library that’s open to the public. Pioneer Vocational Industrial Services is making good use of the larger production area in its new facility at 150 Corporate Drive, which opened in early 2007, says Ron Zimmerman, chief executive officer and executive director. Pioneer provides vocational development and extended employment programs to people who are disabled or disadvantaged – an important lifeline that helps them to get jobs and maximize their independent living skills.
Pioneer manufactures its own products at the new facility, and it also places employees in jobs at other factories, Zimmerman says. Pioneer is the exclusive manufacturer of the cold-weather mats that American soldiers sleep on, and now Pioneer is looking to expand on that success by providing exercise mats. The nonprofit organization also makes designer medical-alert bracelets along with other products and services. Thinking innovatively is paying off for Pioneer, Zimmerman says. “We are happy to report that we are totally self-sufficient,” he says. “In fact, we are now a contributor to the United Way, not a recipient.”
The community will also benefit from the Extension Service’s new 10,800-square-foot facility at 99 Corporate Drive. “We’ll have space for everything from a farmers tax workshop to 4-H craft workshops,” says Jerry Little, county extension agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources. “It’s a total educational environment.” The facility features three meeting rooms with overhead projectors to aid in presentations. Each room’s soundproof walls can be retracted to make room for larger banquets and other events. “We’ve never had a facility that makes this possible,” Little says. “This will help us better serve the public.”

FEELING AT HOME AT WOODY’S Whether it’s a fast business lunch or a special night out with the family, you can find it at Woody’s Restaurant. Since opening in December 2006, Woody’s has made a name for itself in Danville and Boyle County for its steaks and ribs, but the restaurant also offers an express lunch for the busy suit-andtie set as well as a banquet room that can seat 40 people. Woody’s can hold up to 280 people and can host parties of up to 125 during the week, making it a popular destination for groups of all sizes, says General Manager Tracy Taylor. “People have been good about coming in to try us out, and we’re getting a lot of repeat customers,” Taylor says. Woody’s has a lounge area and outdoor patio, both of which are popular. Live music is on the menu every Thursday and sometimes on weekends, Taylor says, depending on the season. 28

BEAUTY THROUGH THE GENERATIONS For 66 years, the Durham Beauty School has been training cosmetologists and nail technicians – all under the watchful eyes of five generations of Charlene Benge’s family. “My grandmother, Sibbie Durham, started the school, and then my mother took over,” says Debbie Stamper, Charlene Benge’s daughter. “I came on board with my mother a couple of years ago. My grandmother also taught her mother, and now my daughter’s here working with us.” In fact, Sibbie Durham’s mother, Martha Sutherland, remained in the beauty profession until she was 93, Stamper says. The school, which usually has around 22 students, oversees 1,800 hours of training in preparation for a state exam. Students then serve a six-month apprenticeship under a master cosmetologist before taking a second exam to
obtain their own master’s designation. The nail technicians undergo 600 hours of training. “We have people come in to have their hair colored, permed, cut, get a shampoo and set – pretty much everything a salon does, and everything is supervised by our instructors,” Stamper says. HE KNOWS THE DRILL About 24 years ago, dentist Thad Overmyer came up with a way to lubricate dental instruments, enhancing their efficiency. Now through his company, Anodia Systems, Dr. Overmyer has expanded into a whole range of cooling and injection systems for dental unit waterlines. “I’m the type of person who works on cars, who drills on things, so I knew we needed a better lubricant than what we were using,” he says. “I wanted to fix the problem, so I developed this lubricant to increase the cutting efficiency when I DA N V I L L E

Anodia is the distributor for, among other products, Mint-A-Kleen®, which replaces the water going through the high-speed hand piece or scaler during operative procedures. It also can be used for cleaning dental waterlines. “I’d used it when using the hand pieces, but I found that it also can clean the lines,” Overmyer explains. “It removes a film, called biofilm, from within the dental unit, which is something else that makes it popular with dentists.” Anodia sells its products throughout the United States, and it also has a distributor in Sweden. CAN’T FIND IT? TRY JR.’S The award-winning window displays are the first clue that Jr.’s General Store is not the “little bit of everything” general-interest store of old. A gift shop with pizzazz, Jr.’s opened on Main Street in September 2006, and
it recently relocated to a larger space in the Proctor-Bosley House to have a little more elbow room, says Kelly Miller, the “Jr.” of the store’s name. He owns the shop along with Tim Robbins, Bennie Thompson and George Thompson. “We needed more space, and we also needed some more parking,” Miller says. “When you sell tables, chairs, lamps and 300-pound birdbaths, you don’t want people to have to go very far to load it up.” If you’re in the market for something a little less cumbersome, no worries. Jr.’s carries everything from baby hats to handmade photo-box frames. The store also offers party planning, wedding planning, flowers and other specialty services. “When I moved here from New York, I wanted to be able to have a small store in a really nice town,” Miller says. “Both of those statements have come true. What we’ve done here is really special.” FRIENDLY TO FEET Danville Bike and Footwear downtown has found its niche with personal
attention and community involvement. The store and its staff place a high premium on service, which has helped it compete with larger, chain retailers. “People appreciate us taking the time to look at their feet, measure them properly and put them in the proper shoe for their foot type, whether they’re walking, running or hiking,” says owner Ernst Crown-Weber. “We work closely with a lot of physical therapists, chiropractors and podiatrists. That’s become a big chunk of our business.” Since 1993, the store has carried shoes, socks, insoles and a wide variety of other products. It caters to all sorts of sports enthusiasts, from runners and walkers to cyclists and swimmers. The store also is a point of contact for the B.I.K.E. Initiative, a program designed to help make Danville and Boyle County more bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly. “It’s hard to find a unique niche in any market, but working with the community, taking time with people, is what we’re all about,” Crown-Weber says. – Joe Morris

Staying on the Same Page CHAMBER COMMITTEE, COMMUNITY PARTNERS CONNECT TO IMPROVE JOB SKILLS
A
quality workforce, good educational opportunities and strong employer base mean great things for an area’s economic future – as long as the lines of communication remain open. That’s the thinking behind the Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce’s new workforce development committee, which was formed in March 2007 to make sure all the area’s economic development partners are on the same page as the region’s workforce continues to grow and expand. “We realized that you can’t grow and expand the economy locally if you don’t have a qualified, skilled workforce,” says Steve Rinehart, co-chair of the committee and the administrative manager at Denyo Manufacturing Corp. “It’s one thing to try to attract new jobs, but if you don’t have people with the skills to fill them, it’s hard to get companies that are here to expand, or bring in a new operation.” To connect people with jobs – or with training programs to enhance the skill sets they already have – the committee

has pulled in members from various segments of the community, including educational entities and a wide range of businesses and industries. With all these folks at the table, Rinehart says, everyone will have an easier time tapping into programs and services that are already up and running. “Danville is an economic hub for a four- or five-county area, and we’re finding that a lot of our local businesses and industries don’t always utilize what’s available because they don’t know it’s there.” This is especially true in the area of workforce training and development, and the committee has already had success partnering with the Bluegrass Area Development District, a confederation of 17 counties in central Kentucky that includes Boyle County. Working with the agency, the chamber has been able to identify common issues that employers see as deficiencies in the current workforce. The basics, such as teamwork awareness and reading comprehension, popped up a lot, as well as basic math
and other core educational issues. “A lot of kids are coming out of high school and really don’t understand what an employer’s expectations are,” Rinehart says. “So now we’re working on getting business folks into the schools to better understand the limitations and pressures that school teachers and administrators are under – and then we get those folks into business settings so they can better understand what businesses need. We want to get them all better aware of the other’s world so they can work together more effectively.” To that end, plans are in the works to make sure that workforce training sources are both identified and easily accessed. A brochure listing various services and agencies that provide them will be distributed throughout the community, Rinehart says. “It will be a summary of what people have available to them,” he says, “and a point of contact for resources that can help people find a job or do better in the job they already have.” – Joe Morris DA N V I L L E

D
oing homework and communicating with teachers is easier than ever for students in Danville’s five schools, thanks to the school district’s investment in state-ofthe-art wireless Internet access. From anywhere on school property, students can use their laptop computers to look up information on the Internet that they need to complete their lessons, read messages on their teachers’ blogs, and send and receive e-mails. “On a spring day, they can spread a blanket on the lawn and do their homework,” says Diane Culbertson, technology coordinator and chief

information officer for Danville Schools. “We have students on the front steps of our schools using the Internet to do their homework. Inside, you can walk from one end of a school building to another and never lose service.” The Danville school district’s 1,750 students can develop their technology skills even further with the 249 new computers being purchased by the school system. The new computers make it possible for each school to provide a computer lab as well as new classroom workstations. This ensures that students who do not have a computer at home can fully participate as they and their
classmates learn about technology and the Internet. Curriculum experts help teachers incorporate the Web into their lessons, Culbertson says. “We have 21st-century schools, and they are 21st-century students,” she says. Federal funding is covering 80 percent of the cost of the new wireless system. One elementary school has 30 laptops available, but generally students and staff members provide their own laptops. To help make new computers affordable, Dell, Apple, Hewlett-Packard and IBM are offering special pricing. The new wireless system includes safeguards to protect students from access to inappropriate Web sites. A software “filter” blocks those sites, and each student also signs an agreement to avoid them. In addition, a central server connected to the schools by new fiberoptic lines makes it easy for teachers to monitor Internet use, Culbertson says. “We have logs, and we can tell if a student went to an inappropriate site,” she says. To protect the system from unauthorized use by anyone other than students and school employees, students have to use passwords to gain access. “We are teaching them information and technology literacy as well as reading and other skills,” Culbertson says. “When you put that together with 21st-century skills, they are better able to compete. he Danville area is home to an impressive array of schools, including Centre College, Eastern Kentucky University, National College, and Bluegrass Community and Technical College – and Midway College is nearby. “Our goal is to create opportunities for our students,” says Gail Vaughn, campus director for Bluegrass Community and Technical College, which formed in 2005 when two separate schools consolidated. The college’s campuses serve both traditional and nontraditional, older students who are already in the workforce. The college and EKU’s Danville campus are discussing ways to expand their alreadyclose relationship, which ensures that students at Bluegrass Community and Technical College get full course credit for their first two years of college when they transfer to EKU to finish a four-year degree, Vaughn says. “We work well together to offer everything a student needs,” she says. Midway College, Kentucky’s only college for women, also offers classes for nontraditional students, both men and women, who are employed but want to further their education. Scoring Goals on the Field and Off YOUTH SOCCER TEAM LANDS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AND WINS NATIONAL FUNDRAISING HONORS
W
inning the state championship in 2007 was plenty to brag about. But when the Central Kentucky Soccer Club’s Under 12 boys team came in first in the nation for a very special fundraising effort, it made for quite a year. The team – composed of boys from Boyle, Lincoln and Mercer counties – shocked the competition when it beat out the previous year’s champions, the Thoroughbreds of Oldham, in the state finals. “It was the first time they entered and the first time they won, so that’s pretty good,” says Duane Steber, who coaches the team along with Rick Angel and Stephen Hall. “I thought we had a chance, but we were playing with some of the top teams in the state – places like Louisville and Lexington, where they’ve got more people and more teams. Nobody could believe it when we got done that day.” Other than the fun of pouring icecold water down their coaches’ necks after the big win, the team members had another big incentive. In addition to playing for a championship, they had been working to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Soccer Kicks for Cancer” program. And for a very personal reason. Team member Mason Angel’s younger brother Drew had been diagnosed with leukemia about a year prior to the start of the season. The struggles he and his family faced during the various treatments for his illness hit home with the boys and their families, so they joined forces with Soccer Kicks for Cancer and set about getting pledges. When it was all said and done, the U12 team had raised almost $5,500, the

most of any soccer club in the country. Not only that, but Drew Angel’s team raised the second-highest amount. “It was pretty impressive. They really got out there,” says Cindy Angel, Drew’s mother. “When our younger son was diagnosed in fall 2005, we learned about the fundraising, and my older son Mason and his teammates went around asking teachers, friends and other people if they would sponsor them. It was really very personal for the kids.” Each player had to get 2,000 touches on a soccer ball within a two-week period, and they received donations of $10 on up from contributors. Soon after the drive was over, the team found out it had led the nation, Angel says. “We were competing against teams
nationwide, in much bigger places, so it was really an amazing feat,” she says. For finishing first and second, the two teams earned a visit from professional soccer player John Michael Hayden of the Houston Dynamo. “He’s from Kentucky and had played on teams here,” Angel says. “They had worked so hard, and getting a visit from him was really special.” – Joe Morris

Help at a Place Called Hope CENTER FOR AT-RISK POPULATION REACHES THOSE WHO NEED ASSISTANCE MOST
W
hen the Hope Clinic & Pharmacy opened its doors in December 2006, the goal was twofold: provide medical care to the region’s at-risk populations and reduce wait times in area emergency rooms. After more than 500 clinic visits and some 1,500 volunteer hours, Hope is very much alive. The clinic was founded by Ephraim McDowell Health, Heart of Kentucky United Way, the Salvation Army and the Boyle County Health Department. It operates Monday through Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the health department, and its pharmacy services are provided from the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center’s outpatient pharmacy. Part of its success can be tracked to the very narrow focus of its operations. The clinic screens individuals prior to seeing them as patients, and it will only take individuals not covered by Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance. They also must meet federal poverty income guidelines. Since many people in this risk category often used the emergency
room as their primary source of medical care, the clinic was seen as a way to redirect people in such a way that the entire patient community benefited, says Harry Nickens, vice president for community relations and development at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. “We have a program that we call Mission Effectiveness, where our philosophy is that we’re not just engaged in doing a job, but in a mission of service to the public,” Nickens says. “Our public is a six-county service area, and for us to only deal with patients who have insurance or funds where they can elect to come to us for services doesn’t meet that mission. We wanted to partner with other organizations in the community to better serve that segment of our population that doesn’t have primary care or the resources to obtain it.” The clinic focuses on five chronic diseases – obesity, Type II diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and gastroesophageal reflux disease. By targeting those specific issues, it has already been able to make a dent in emergency-room visits by non-insured

individuals. “If we can divert primary-care-need patients away from our two emergency rooms, then we are not only providing health care to an indigent population at a less expensive cost, but we’re also helping to reduce the wait times,” Nickens says. In other words, if a patient shows up at the emergency room with chest pain, he or she will be seen immediately. The individual who has come in with a child running a high fever will be forced to wait. That also goes for more serious, but not life-threatening, issues and injuries. “If we can separate out the nonemergency patients, then the true emergency patient – like someone with a broken leg – is going to be attended to in a more timely manner,” Nickens says. As of September 2007, the clinic had seen 200 different patients, for a total of 500 visits. It also had dispensed more than 2,000 prescriptions. Stephen Bishop in the production, was named Best Actor. “I was the only woman and the only Kentuckian in the competition,” Orndorff says. “It was a thrill to win.” While her resume includes a Ph.D. in intercultural communication from the University of Kentucky and experience in public relations, advertising, journalism instruction and editing, Orndorff says she was still surprised by the
success of Death by Darkness. After years of writing short stories, essays and then one-act plays, this was her first attempt at writing a full-length play, not to mention a mystery. “It only took me 58 years, but I think I’ve finally found my niche,” says Orndorff, who has already started writing a new entry for the 2008 festival. “I’m hooked, and I’m not looking back.” – Valerie Pascoe

entucky’s Mammoth Cave has been a source of intrigue and mystery since visitors began touring it nearly 200 years ago. Inspired by the cave’s grand-yet-eerie atmosphere and its long list of distinguished visitors – including notable literary figures from the 19th century – Danville’s Elizabeth Orndorff uses the geological wonder as the setting for her award-winning mystery play, Death by Darkness. “When my stepson came to visit last fall, he toured the cave and it inspired me to set the play right here in Kentucky with characters from another time,” says Orndorff, whose protagonist is based on the real-life Stephen Bishop, a slave who gave tours of Mammoth Cave from the 1830s to the 1850s. He was rumored to have used the cave as part of the underground railroad. Set in 1842 in the cave’s magnificent Star Chamber, Death by Darkness takes the audience on a journey into the world of murder, deceit and revenge. The play’s dark plot, which is full of surprises and twists, prompted audiences to select Orndorff for the two top honors at the 2007 International Mystery Writers’ Festival in Owensboro. More than 6,200 tickets were sold for the six-day festival, which featured 48 performances, the majority of which were sold out. “I didn’t get a chance to see the play until it opened at the festival,” Orndorff says. “I was blown away by the set and the quality of the actors, four of whom were brought in from Chicago for the performances. It is just a top-notch event.” In addition to winning the Most Promising New Writer award and Best New Play – which earned Orndorff $15,000 in total prize money at the festival – John Frazier, who portrayed

Cheers to the Arts HOP STOP TAKES OFF
P
eek into the lobbies of Main Street businesses after hours and you may see crowds surrounding some of Danville’s most exciting artwork. Twice each year, the Danville-Boyle County Arts Commission hosts the Gallery Hop Stop, an evening showcase that allows revelers to “hop” from improvised gallery to gallery. The event provides a forum for local artwork – paintings, photography, ceramics, blown glass, sculptures and fiber art – at participating businesses such as Chase Bank, Lexington Investment Co. and Coldwell Banker VIP Realty. “For an evening, these businesses are transformed into art galleries throughout downtown,” says Ann Nichols, executive director of the Arts Commission of Danville-Boyle County. “Different sectors of the community come together for the Gallery Hop Stop for one purpose – to provide an opportunity for these talented artists to share their work.
