Everything Shipshape Elizabeth City deserves its reputation as the “Harbor of Hospitality.” The city’s harbor area is actually a canal where the Pasquotank begins widening in the Albemarle Sound, and the canal is annually used by thousands of boaters traveling along the Intracoastal Waterway. Elizabeth City is a favorite stop along the route. The boat–friendly community draws nearly 2,000 boats a year to the city-owned dock. The wharf offers free WiFi access along the waterfront, and there are dockside deliveries of groceries and other necessities from local merchants.

New Face for Business Jennifer Palestrant has channeled her passion for business into a career helping others make it big in the marketplace. Palestrant took over as president of the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce in November 2007 after 17 years spent marketing and managing a variety of companies – including the nonprofit Wesley Hospitality House. Jennifer lives with her husband, Chris, a professor of music at Elizabeth City State University, and their 4-year-old son, William.

Going Under In September 2004, the Pasquotank became the first river in the country to receive historical designation from the National Park Service. It was for its role in the Underground Railroad. Since then, similar recognition has been given to Great Dismal Swamp. The Underground Railroad was the secret effort to assist black slaves fleeing captivity before and during the Civil War. The Albemarle region was a key link in the effort because of its proximity to shipping routes, and the dense and impenetrable swampland.

rich variety of wildlife and waterways are drawing eco-tourists from near and far to the Elizabeth City region. Many come to follow a new network of paddling trails and camping platforms called the Paths of Pasquotank. The trail system stretches south from upper Pasquotank and Camden counties near the Virginia line down to Edenton. “The greatest asset we have in this region is water,” says Mark Powell, of the Natural Resource Conservation Service. The Conservation Service has been working with the Albemarle Resource Conservation and Development Council and the North Carolina Paddle Trails Association on developing the Paths of Pasquotank. In addition to the new platforms, the council and the N.C. Paddle Trails Association have updated and installed trail markers throughout Pasquotank, Perquimans, Camden and Chowan counties. “We want to try to develop the nature-based tourism on a

regional level,” Powell says. “We think we’ve got a good start on that by putting in these camping platforms and marking and maintaining the paddle trails.” Several grants were used to fund the construction of the camping platforms. Four platforms were added along the upper Pasquotank River in 2007 through a $50,000 grant from the North Carolina Recreational Trail Program. Camping platforms also were added in Chowan County and Perquimans County, which received a $100,000 Golden Leaf Foundation grant to construct eight platforms. The elevated wooden platforms are about three to four feet off the swamp floor. “There’s a narrow walkway that goes 75 feet into the woods into wooden camping platforms that are big enough to put a tent, with some room to move around,” Powell says. “It’s primitive camping, and you pack everything in and you have to pack everything out.” These and other recreational opportunities, from kayaking to hiking, should give the local economy a boost, says Debbie Leete, community outreach manager for Albemarle Health and secretary for Paths of Pasquotank. “We feel this is a wonderful opportunity to step in and allow people to focus on [disease] prevention and get people outside and away from the TV,” she says. “We’re all starting to learn about ecotourism and the benefits for those counties.” Elizabeth City and other communities in the region are well equipped to handle the growing influx of visitors, Leete notes. “We have a hotel and restaurant base, a lot of historical sites, and quaint little towns and communities,” she says. “We have the perfect package for tourism opportunities.” George “Bucket” Taylor, who worked for years as a naturalist for the Virginia State Parks system, knows some of the best spots around Pasquotank County and 15 other counties in the region. “Northeastern North Carolina is probably the only place in the country where in an hour and a half you can be in seven national wildlife refuges,” Taylor says. “The richness of biodiversity in this area is overwhelming,” he says. The Elizabeth City Area Convention & Visitors Bureau has found that eco-tourism can be a positive for the community. “We don’t really have to do much to improve our product,” says Russ Haddad, bureau director. “Mother Nature has done it all for us.”

ere is the plane truth: A high-tech business park will soon be built adjacent to the Elizabeth City–Pasquotank County Regional Airport, and up to four aviation-specific companies will eventually locate there. A total of 63.53 acres has been allocated to develop an Elizabeth City Aviation Research & Development Commerce Park, with $10.4 million earmarked to begin the first phase of the project. The design of the aviation research park began in July 2007, with infrastructure construction expected to be underway by early 2008. “We have already had discussions with a number of industries that have expressed a great deal of interest about locating in the new aviation park,” says Rich Olson, Elizabeth City manager. “The four 80,000-square-foot buildings that can be constructed will all have direct access to the airport via their own [taxiway].” Olson adds that perhaps the best news about the entire aviation research park venture is that it will ultimately create about new 500 jobs in this community. “In addition, $150 million in private investment will be pumped into the local economy,” he says. Meanwhile, Elizabeth City State University will construct a mini-campus on 15 of the 64 acres to be devoted to aviation science and academics. The mini-campus will potentially include three two-story buildings. “Aviation research has always been a big deal in North Carolina, and our goal is to develop a strong aviation cluster here in Elizabeth City,” Olson says. “Our largest employer is already the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station at Elizabeth City, so now we want to grow that aviation connection.” The Elizabeth City–Pasquotank County Regional Airport Authority will own and oversee operations at the research park once it is fully functional. “As for the four businesses, we will make sure that they will be companies that won’t make a lot of aviation-related noise that could bother nearby residents,” says Scott Hinton, manager of Elizabeth City–Pasquotank County Regional Airport. “We want to grow the airport and the aviation research park smartly. And yes, all four companies will be related to the aviation industry and will work closely with the ECSU aviation science campus.” The project involves collaboration between Elizabeth City, Pasquotank County, the Elizabeth City–Pasquotank County Regional Airport Authority, ECSU, College of the Albemarle and the Albemarle Economic Development Commission. “One of the goals of this entire endeavor is to keep aviation jobs here so that students will train and remain in this community,” Hinton says. “And as for the airport itself, another positive aspect is that the four aviation companies will also ideally build their own personal hangars at the airport to store their corporate planes.”

enny Davis Jones picked her own hometown to throw the wedding of her dreams. The Elizabeth City event, with 200 invited guests, met all her expectations – and then some. “We got married at our church and had the reception at the Pond House Inn,” Jones says. The reception was an outdoor event with the Pasquotank River as its backdrop. “It was spring and things were blooming. It was a great setting. … They set up tents, and there was a sailboat filled with beer.” With waterfront nuptials all the rage, Elizabeth City-bound brides and grooms are in luck. They’ll find no shortage of wedding specialists eager to cater to their every desire and help create memories that will last a lifetime. Jones turned to local chefs to create her cake and cater her reception. Flowers were arranged by an in-town florist, and even formal wear was found within minutes from the engaged couple’s home. Another popular venue for wedding parties is the Culpepper Inn in the heart of town. Couples may wed at one of the downtown churches and walk to the inn for the reception. Or they may choose an intimate wedding in front of the inn’s six-foot-tall fireplace. “If we are having a large outdoor wedding, sometimes the city police will close the street in front of our inn to give the wedding party more privacy,“ says Bonnie Stewart, who along with her husband, Jim, owns the Culpepper. With its quaint downtown, picturesque architecture and waterfront views, it’s no surprise that Elizabeth City is an increasingly popular site for weddings, says Martha Johnson, who owns the Pond House Inn. “We started having weddings the first year we opened,” Johnson says. “We have between eight and 10 weddings a year now.” ELIZABETH CIT Y

Local business owners recently formed the Albemarle Wedding Association, which sponsored its first bridal show in February 2007. That show drew 35 wedding vendors and dozens of potential customers, says Pam Winslow Smith, owner of Louisa’s Bridal Shop. “More and more people are getting married in this area,” Smith says. “Some of that has to do with the number of people moving into the area, but we are also getting to be more of a destination.” In fact, weddings are an integral part of Elizabeth City history, Smith says. During the 1940s and 1950s, several wedding chapels sprang up to accommodate a rush of military brides and grooms. “Military men from Norfolk, Va., would come down here [with their brides] and get married over the weekend,” Smith says. “There is still one of the wedding chapels downtown, but it has been turned into a law office.” Smith has definitely seen an increase

in business since she bought the 45year-old bridal shop in 2004. She not only offers bridal gowns but also mother-of-the-bride dresses, bridesmaid dresses and tuxedo rentals. Smith keeps a list of area businesses specializing in wedding services and products to make planning easier for the bride and groom. The list includes photographers, bakeries, hair and nail salons, florists, caterers and even a carriage company. Martha Chedister and her husband, Jeff, started Carolina Carriages in spring 2007. Their company uses a white Victorian vis-à-vis carriage, which has two seats facing each other, and a plush burgundy interior. For weddings, the Chedisters decorate with the carriage with flowers and bows. “The carriage is drawn by one horse, but we have two beautiful Percheron horses,” Chedister says. “They will definitely get the wedding party to the church on time.”

The Culpepper Inn on Main Street is popular for weddings. Left: A wedding gown from Louisa’s Bridal Shop will make any bride feel like a princess.

Good ELIZABETH CITY HAS A GROWING INTEREST IN ORGANIC FOODS

ike so many Americans today, eastern North Carolina residents are health conscious and increasingly aware of their diets. In the Elizabeth City area, this trend can be seen in the grocery store aisles, where organic produce and other healthy products are prominently displayed. “Organic produce is being marketed nationally on a very large scale,” says John Aydlett, a marketing specialist for the North Carolina Department of Agriculture. “Here in our area, we are noticing a local increase in interest. … Agriculture drives our local economy, and I think it makes sense that interest in organic food is growing here, both among consumers and growers.” There are roughly 74,000 acres of soybeans, 34,000 acres of corn and 25,000 acres of wheat planted yearly in Pasquotank and Camden counties, and the 8,000 acres of potatoes grown here make the county the largest producer in the state. John and Audra Marx own Soho Organic Market at the corner of Road Street and Colonial Avenue. The store, which specializes in organic products, is housed in the historic Southern Hotel, built in 1927. The couple banked on the future growth of the area by opening the grocery store in 2005 and have watched it grow steadily since. The Marxes also own Muddy Waters Coffeehouse across the street from their store. “People in the coffeehouse were always saying, ‘Someone should open an organic grocery here,’ so we did,” says John Marx, laughing. “And we have stocked the store based on customer input. We specialize in grocery and health food, beauty aids, supplements and homeopathic products. We certainly fill a need for people with food allergies and specialneeds diets.” The store owners say the business is growing steadily. “We see new customers every day,” John Marx says. “We sell organic produce like greens, potatoes, onions, corn, squash, heirloom tomatoes, and local blueberries, apples and other fruit, along with some organic-fed meats.” Shoppers also find organic products at Nature’s Organic Bounty store, opened in early 2007 by George and Mary Simons, in the Ken-Nix Plaza on Highway 17 South. Shoppers at Nature’s Organic Bounty can pick up organic fruits and vegetables, healthy snacks and environmentally friendly household products. Customers may also shop online at www.naturesorganicbounty.net. Tommy Fleetwood of the Department of Agriculture says he is watching yet another trend emerge: a desire to eat local. Consumers are on the lookout for locally grown produce, locally raised meats and other food items, which not only results in fresher food on the table but also minimizes transportation and other costs of preparing food for longdistance distribution. “I think there’s more of a push for people to seek out local produce,” Fleetwood says. “And organically grown food is ELIZABETH CIT Y

climbing up the scale of the grocery chain, so more growers here will get into it eventually.” One local grower who is already a true believer is Richard Parker of Parker Farms. Four hundred of the 2,600 acres he, wife Laura and son Joseph farm are certified organic, yielding a broad range of produce. The Parkers are aiming to add 25 acres a year. For Parker Farms, the organic market is the market of the future. “The conventional produce market is crowded with growers doing the same thing from farm to farm, and that keeps everything depressed,” says Parker. “The organic market is the one with growth opportunity. People are becoming more health conscious and aware of the chemicals and things that are put into our food chain – from things in the feed for cattle and poultry to the things we use on our crops.” Parker Farms sells organic produce to Whole Foods stores, Organic Valley and Wal-Mart primarily. He even appears in a promotional video that is shown by Whole Foods. “I sell quite a bit to the Whole Foods store in Raleigh. … I have a former pastor living there who was shocked to see me on screen in that store,” he says, laughing. “They even have baseball cards for kids to collect that have pictures of local farmers who produce organic. I think the trend of demand for locally grown produce and farmerfriendly stores will continue to grow.” Consumers and grocers expect the same. “It’s an optimistic market,” says Soho’s Marx. “It’s a service for the community, and I think a valuable part of the community. I see the support for it more every day, and we appreciate it.”

Five thousand acres of potatoes are grown in the county annually. Left: John and Audra Marx own Soho Organic Market on Colonial Avenue in Elizabeth City.

ACTIVITIES EDUCATE, ENTERTAIN YOUNGSTERS AND KEEP THEM IN SHAPE STORY BY CRISTAL CODY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN CURCIO

ow do snowflakes form and why are no two alike? At Port Discover, children learn that snowflakes form when ice settles on dust and their unique shapes come from the air and temperature conditions right around them. Learning is fun at the hands-on science museum, which offers dozens of programs for elementary-age youngsters on topics ranging from marine life to rainbows. The museum is just one of many resources for children in Pasquotank and Camden counties to keep young minds engaged and their bodies active. At Port Discover in downtown Elizabeth City, kids set the pace, but educators are always nearby to offer information about science, says LuAnne Pendergraft, project director. The center’s high-powered microscopes offer children extreme close-ups of life around them. Young learners also enjoy personal visits with real scientists, who come to the museum to talk on a chosen subject each month. “We’ve had biology professors come in, and we had second-graders extracting DNA from pea plants,” Pendergraft says.

“Pharmacy professors have come to talk about germs and how to stay healthy. It’s a nice opportunity for kids to interact with scientists.” Another popular stop for young learners is the Museum of the Albemarle, one of three regional branch museums of the North Carolina Museum of History. The 50,000-square-foot building sits on the waterfront in downtown Elizabeth City and interprets the history and culture of the Albemarle region through its collections and galleries, including reconstructed log buildings and a life-size shad boat. The Star Theater inside Elizabeth City State University’s Planetarium gives visitors a guided tour of the universe, while Clay Gardens pottery studio lets children express themselves through art. When it’s time to get outside and move, kids have plenty of options here, too. The Pasquotank River region offers numerous ways to have fun in the great outdoors, with fishing, hiking, camping and biking high on the agenda for most young families. Competition heats up on the athletic fields, where several hundred young athletes participate on teams organ-

ized by the Elizabeth City Parks and Recreation Department. The department serves residents of Pasquotank and Camden counties, says director Jim Overman. “We have year-round tae kwon do classes in the Knobbs Creek Recreation Center, and we have youth baseball, softball and volleyball leagues,” he says. During the summer, the department offers weekly sports camps, including baseball, tennis and cheering. Soccer teams attract large turnouts in the spring and fall. The Albemarle Family YMCA also grabs kids’ attention through activities such as swimming lessons, movie nights and fun holiday events. YMCA facilities include a large gym, rock climbing wall and a swimming pool. Teens have their own special events, such as movie nights on Tuesdays. “We offer birthday parties here and give parents a night out once a month where they can drop kids off from 6 to 9:30 at night,” says Jennifer Pillsbury, senior program director of the Albemarle Family Y. The kids get to watch a movie and eat popcorn while their folks enjoy more grown-up pursuits – and that keeps everyone happy.

Stories of the People TALES OF THE ALBEMARLE REGION ARE TOLD AT THE MUSEUM IN ELIZABETH CITY

on Pendergraft wants to tell a story 367 years in the making. Pendergraft, exhibit design chief for the Museum of the Albemarle, helped develop the new exhibit “Our Story,” slated to open in spring 2008 at the museum. “It will be the story of all people who have lived here – from the Woodland Culture through the Spanish exploration, through the time Albemarle was settled [in 1640] on to present day,” Pendergraft says. “We’ve also simplified the process by breaking it into eras based on modes of travel. The modern times are divided into the maritime, canal, railroad, auto and tourism eras.” The Museum of the Albemarle in downtown Elizabeth City is the northeastern regional branch of the North Carolina Museum of History. “It began privately in 1967 and has evolved to this,” says Pendergraft, referring to the new $15 million facility on the waterfront. “What we’re really about is a general history museum – artifacts of the common man. We are selective with what we take, but it definitely revolves around the life of the everyday person.” The story began almost four centuries ago, when people first began to plant crops and settle in villages along the river’s edge. The museum’s exhibits include personal artifacts,

decorative arts, documents, photographs and even agriculture, maritime and hunting implements. Pendergraft, who holds a master’s degree in sculpture and came to Elizabeth City in 1993 from the state museum in Raleigh, says visitors should expect the new exhibit to provide an intimate look at the region’s history. “It will be a large exhibit but should connect with the visitor,” Pendergraft adds.

f you’ve got the urge to purge, NetWorkz can help you turn those unwanted items into cash – for yourself or your favorite community organization. Net-Workz is a store and an online retailer that stocks a wide range of merchandise, including vintage collectibles, clothing and pottery. Most of Net-Workz’s inventory is consigned by local residents, who can choose to keep the proceeds from their sales or donate them to a nonprofit agency in the area, says Bill Mallette, who manages Net-Workz. The idea for helping nonprofits through Net-Workz was the brainchild of two local women – Maria Garcia, head of the Northeastern Community Development Corporation, and Pat Youngblood, director of the Hopeline program for abused women and their families. The idea came about as they were looking for new ways to

assist nonprofit organizations with fundraising and make an impact on the community. Mallette encourages nonprofit organizations to register with Net-Workz for contributions and then spread the word among their supporters to help solicit donations. “I think it is a good example of people working together and benefiting in different ways,” Mallette says. Experience + Attitude = Leadership C This veteran public servant also sits on the county’s hospital board, its library board and serves as chair man of the board for the local State Employees Credit Union. He is also a member of the local jail commission and the mental health board. Perry’s combination of experience and dedication makes him uniquely suited to weigh in on many issues facing northeastern North Carolina. “I definitely think the biggest issue facing us today is our rapid growth,”

Perry says. “With our new roads, connecting roads and development corridors, we have to stay ahead of the game to provide supporting infrastructure.” Education and the environment are two other areas of concern, he says. “We have new schools and existing schools that we must support for the health of the community,” Perry points out. “Land use and environmental restrictions must find a balance. … Everyone wants to develop and grow but we have to plan and do it in a smart way.” Perry often finds ways for different segments within the community to work together, such as helping jail inmates qualify for mental health treatment when the need arises. “I have a deep feeling for the community,” Perry says. “It is a special place. The area I am from has produced 34 African-American doctors [in the last 20 years], which I think is an extremely high number.”

Customers rave about Kathy Dowdy’s confections.

efore opening The Chocolate House, Kathy Dowdy immersed herself in candy. One of Dowdy’s first moves toward opening the business was gaining membership in the National Confectionery Association and signing up for workshops to learn everything there is to know about the candy business. Dowdy traveled to Vermont to become a chocolatier and to another symposium that taught gift-basket creation. “I wanted to learn what I could before I jumped in,” says Dowdy, who fulfilled her lifelong dream of operating a candy store with her shop’s grand opening in May 2007. The Chocolate House has quickly become a destination for residents of the region looking to satisfy a sweet tooth. Customers are enthusiastic about Dowdy’s array of confections, including

hile many schools use technology to enhance education, CamTech High School embraces technology as its driving force. CamTech is part of the small but progressive Camden County School System and is funded through a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. CamTech is modeled on the New Technology High School in Napa, Calif., which pioneered the use of collaborative projects fueled by technology to teach a full range of subject matter. “The foundation of the kind of education we offer is project-based learning, where students work in collaborative groups to solve real-world problems,” says Ina Lane, CamTech’s principal. CamTech is academically rigorous and adheres to the same educational requirements as all North Carolina schools. The difference is in the methodology, Lane says. For example, instead of writing a term paper on To Kill a Mockingbird, CamTech students tapped other mediums

handmade truffles, clusters, turtles and exotic treats, such as gourmet pretzels dipped in caramel and chocolate and rolled in nuts. She also offers “the biggest gourmet apples you’ve ever seen.” Dowdy purchases the French chocolates of E. Guittard, then tempers and melts them herself. This hands-on approach is part of what makes her confections so tasty. “I wanted something special for Elizabeth City.” For now, Dowdy is operating The Chocolate House as a simple storefront business, though she hopes to expand in the future into areas such as wholesaling and Web retailing. “I’m just getting a feel for the market,” she says. The Chocolate House, at 217 N. Water St., is open Monday through Saturday.

Through hard-working teachers,” she adds. – Stories by Warren Denney, Cindy Sanders and Dan Markham

on Perva watches customers stream into Super Wal-Mart from the counter of his new Subway restaurant, located just beyond the retail giant’s front doors. “This area northwest of Elizabeth City is ready to take off,” Perva says. “When we were presented with the opportunity to open a store here, we jumped at the chance. Being right off the bypass, we feel it will boom with growth.” Perva’s family has owned restaurants in the Elizabeth City region since 1988. The new Subway joins Wal-Mart and a rash of other businesses springing up on Halstead Boulevard‚ a connector road to the recently opened U.S. 17 Bypass. The 3.5-mile connector is becoming a hotbed for commercial and residential development. It is anchored on its west end by Tanglewood, a 6,500-acre master planned site zoned for commercial, industrial and residential use. According to Tanglewood’s manager, Jon Crouse, the development’s available tracts range from five to 2,000 acres, with 848 acres set aside for residential construction and a golf course. More than 4,600 acres are zoned for industrial use. “With all of the new infrastructure – highways, railroad, natural gas, water, sewer and choice of electricity – we feel that we are poised to take advantage of new opportunities,” Crouse says. Less than two miles away, on the east end of Halstead Boulevard, another new development called City Center West is already taking off. The 76-acre commercial park will be home to a variety of local businesses, as well as national retail and restaurant chains. The initial phase of development for City Center West includes the successful launch of the area’s first ELIZABETH CIT Y

Marriott-branded property, a 97-room Fairfield Inn and Suites, in September 2007. According to Arthur McPherson, president of McMor Development and M&M Hospitality LLC, the project represents a $75 million investment over the next five to 10 years. “By spring 2008, we expect to have 10 or 12 additional facilities under construction,” McPherson says. “Response has been tremendous.” In addition to high visibility along Halstead Boulevard, McPherson says companies building along the connector road also benefit from increased accessibility to the surrounding multicounty area near the Virginia-North Carolina state line. “Our market is growing, and we continue to grow, despite the residential

slowdown nationally,” he says. “This growth is driving and supporting retail expansion. It’s a strong local economy, and this is a good area for expansion.” In an effort to ensure that Halstead Boulevard remains attractive as well as successful from an economic development standpoint, the city created a zoning overlay district that will encourage high-quality development through enhanced building and landscaping standards. “Some people may be afraid that development along Halstead Boulevard will mean out-migration from the city, but we believe there is enough growth to keep downtown Elizabeth City viable as well as support the new business district,” McPherson says. “The goal is to keep the entire marketplace healthy.”

Charles Gregg explains how he fits customers at his Main Street store, where customers receive that personal touch.

GREGG PUTS BEST FOOT FORWARD To remain competitive in the retail shoe business, the independent proprietor must offer customers a little something extra. Gregg Shoes offers a lot. This downtown Elizabeth City shop differentiates itself from the competition through service, quality, selection and superior fit – along with a staff that has a century’s worth of experience between them. The store is owned and operated by Charles Gregg, who has been working in the shoe business since 1956. His sole full-time employee, Charles Lane, has been fitting feet since 1947. Gregg and Lane take pride in measuring each foot that comes into the store, a service that is disappearing at the department stores and discount 28

shops. And Gregg Shoes doesn’t take a one-size-fits-all approach, but offers a wide selection of shoes in all sizes in various widths. “A lot of places carry shoes in one width,” Gregg says. “We’ve got customers who come down from Virginia because of the sizes.” The men also stay abreast of the latest footwear fashion. “We try to stay a little bit ahead of the market,” Gregg says. Gregg Shoes, 510 E. Main St., is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. HEALING TOUCH Body, Mind & Spirit delivers service from the heart. “We are very compassionate, and we love our work,” says Lori Bright,

who opened the therapeutic massage practice in downtown Elizabeth City in February 2007. Bright offers her clients a variety of massage options, including deep-tissue, Swedish and Reiki styles. She became a Reiki master in September. “It helps the body balance out the positive and negative energy,” Bright says of Reiki. “It helps the body heal itself.” Bright’s abilities are a testament to the powers of massage. She suffered a paralyzing brain tumor in the 1980s, but through a combination of traditional medicine and massage, the affects of that debilitating illness are no longer evident. The positive impact of massage therapy in her own life was Bright’s impetus to learn the trade. “I got into it from there,” Bright says. ELIZABETH CIT Y

“I wanted to give back what I got.” She operates the store with nail specialist Karen Balderson, who also is certified to work with patients who have diabetes. Massage and nail services are available by appointment. Massage sessions range in length from one-half hour up to two hours. HOME SHOPPING MADE EASY Dave Kondracki is helping create a new kind of home shopping network. The Elizabeth City photographer is allowing prospective buyers to look for their dream homes from the comfort of their living rooms. Kondracki operates Real Tour Vision Dealership, a service that creates Internetbased home tours. Though he’s had the photo bug since the 1950s, it wasn’t until recently that Kondracki turned his avocation into a vocation. He started out by taking photographs for insurance companies, and then a real estate agent suggested that his talents might be better used in the home-selling business. He investigated various options before choosing a company known as Real Tour Vision based on its “clarity and options,” he says. After a customer signs up for his services, Kondracki takes hundreds of photos, both inside and outside the seller’s home. He then melds the images together to create what is, in effect, a 360-degree view of the residence. Viewers can even control the experience. By clicking on blue “hot spots” that appear throughout the tours, users are taken through different rooms. “It gives you a virtual tour of how the house is laid out,” Kondracki says. “It’s as if you were actually walking through the home.”

“These are for liquids, [ranging from] laboratory-table-top size to large production machinery for paints, inks, adhesives, food, pharmaceutical and other related industries.” The company has customers in South America, Central America, Puerto Rico, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. “We currently employ 45 people in Elizabeth City and have direct sales people in the U.S., as well as independent representatives in the U.S. and overseas,” van de Sande says. Hoffer Flow Control also sells products around the world. Hoffer was

founded in 1969 in New Jersey and relocated to Elizabeth City in 1992. The company builds and sells flow meters to customers in the United States and more than 70 other countries. The U.S. Navy and its major shipbuilding contractors, such as Northrop Grumman Newport News, as well as NASA and the U.S. Air Force, are among its customers. Hoffer meters, which measure the flow of liquids and gases, are used in most Navy ships and submarines for fuel flow measurement and ballast control. – Stories by Dan Markham and Warren Denney

HELPING RUN THE WORLD Two Elizabeth City equipment makers – Hockmeyer Equipment Corp. and Hoffer Flow Control – are stars in the international business world. dministrators of Albemarle Health’s Albemarle Hospital want all patients to receive the most up-to-date medical treatment using the latest equipment and knowledge for the 21st century. Additions and improvements carrying a price tag of more than $40 million will make sure that is happening. “We have been planning these expansions for a number of years,” says Sharon Tanner, President and CEO of Albemarle Health. “All of our facilities were adequate. They just needed updating and expanding.” Rapid population growth had pushed hospital capacity to the limit, so it was time for some alterations. The largest of the expansion and renovation projects is the $44 million construction of a new Emergency Department and Surgery Center. Scheduled for completion by summer 2009, the two-story emergency addition will double the current bed capacity from 16 treatment rooms to 34, plus add two specialty rooms for psychiatric patients and victims of sexual assault. The department will expand to 38,000 square feet and bring online a new ground level parking facility under the newly built addition. “Our current emergency center was designed to serve about 25,000 people a year,“ Tanner says. “We have been seeing in the ballpark of about 35,000.” The Surgery Center component of the project will feature approximately 31,000 square feet on the second floor, including eight new operating rooms and four new Post-Anesthesia Care Unit beds. Administrators expect the hospital to handle an average of 10,630 surgery cases annually over the next nine years, more than 1,000 above the number that the Surgery Center was designed to accommodate. “What’s really great about this construction is that it is being built on the opposite side of the building from where our current Emergency Department is,” Tanner says. “This is allowing our operations to continue on without being disturbed.” This is the most significant improvement launched to date, and certainly the most expensive, yet there are other important improvements taking place at Albemarle Hospital. Renovation of the Cardiac Catheterization Suite, completed in March 2007, included installation of state-of-the-art imaging and interventional technology, which enables physicians to get a better look at the heart and arteries. An accurate examination can mean the difference between treating the problem with medication or recognizing the need for immediate intervention. Also up and running is the new Vascular Intervention Suite featuring a Siemens Digital Flat Panel Angiography System (DFA). This system allows physicians to see images more clearly and manipulate and store them with ease. Images can be transmitted to remote locations such as a local physician’s office or major medical center for consultation. Albemarle Hospital also is now offering digital mammography, the latest technology to help find and diagnose breast cancer. In addition to Albemarle Hospital, Albemarle Health operates facilities in Manteo, Kitty Hawk and other North Carolina locations. – Pam Sherborne

Talent on Display at ECSU ELIZABETH CITY STATE UNIVERSITY REACHES OUT TO THE COMMUNITY THROUGH ART

D

ynamic artistic diversity flows across campus at Elizabeth City State University – and into the community, as well. Creativity hits a high note through a number of university-sponsored events throughout the year, including art exhibits, theater, dance and musical performances – all free and open to the public. “As it relates to art – all art – diversity is extremely important,” says Dr. Willie J. Gilchrist, who became the university’s ninth chief executive in March 2007. “[Art] enhances the quality of life. The arts make us see that we belong to more than ourselves. The university

plays a major role in the community in helping provide this diversity.” The music department presents frequent, free concerts throughout the school year. These range from programs by the four large ensembles to recitals of original music written by students studying composition and theory. On April 18, music professor Doug Jackson will feature a 90th birthday salute to Thelonious Monk, a legendary jazz musician born in nearby Rocky Mount. The arts faculty remains professionally active as well. Walter Swan, a new voice instructor on staff, performs with the university chorus and occasionally with Virginia Opera. The Faculty Piano series in March will feature a recital by instructor Mary Hellmann. The university also presents its Lyceum Series annually, with performances that range from harp recitals to dance pieces to classical piano concerts. Students are encouraged to attend and receive credit for doing so. One of the newest buildings on campus is the Mickey L. Burnim Fine Arts Center, home to the art and music

departments at ECSU. The center opened in January 2000 and boasts piano, graphic design and music composition labs. It also has a 1,000-seat auditorium and an amphitheater. Other campus resources include a public radio station, WVRS FM 89.9, which is a 24-hour broadcast affiliate of National Public Radio. The university’s Viking Recording Studio acts as the primary laboratory for students in audio engineering and studio production courses. The facilities also are available to individuals or groups in the community for use in promoting organizations and community events. “We want to contribute to the economy of the region, to spur growth by promoting products and services,” says LaTanya Afolayan, associate vice chancellor for development. “Businesses and individuals can use our resources to do so.” ECSU is part of the University of North Carolina system. It offers baccalaureate studies in the arts and sciences, professional and pre-professional programs, and master’s degrees in select disciplines. – Bridget Huckabee

Several concerts are produced each year at the Mickey L. Burnim Fine Arts Complex at Elizabeth City State University. Above: Chancellor Willie J. Gilchrist is a strong supporter of the arts.

eads up: A new soccer complex is being constructed in Elizabeth City. Both the Elizabeth City and Pasquotank County parks and recreation departments have been working together for more than a year to make two sports projects become a reality in this community. They are the River Road Soccer Complex and the South Park Athletic Complex. The soccer facility is being built adjacent to River Road Middle School

on county property that is not part of the school system. A total of five soccer fields will be constructed along with a walking trail, playground and parking lot, and soccer is tentatively scheduled to begin at River Road by the fall of 2008. “These days, all the organized soccer in this community is played on school fields, so this complex will have more of a positive influence on the youth in our area than anything we’ve done in Elizabeth City over the past 20 years,”

says Jim Overman, director of the Elizabeth City Parks & Recreation Department. Jeff Simpson agrees. The director of the Pasquotank County Parks and Recreation Department says that youth sports facilities have been a top priority in the community for several years. “We originally wanted one piece of property to have everything at one site, but that didn’t work out,” Simpson says. “So we broke ground on the soccer facility in September 2007 and will eventually add the baseball complex to the mix.” The South Park Athletic Complex for baseball will be on 34 acres in the old industrial park south of town, just off Weeksville Road where the Food Bank of the Albemarle is situated. Plans for the complex include five youth baseball diamonds with 200-foot fences. The fields will be configured in a wagonwheel design, and there will also be one adjacent larger diamond with 350-foot fences for kids ages 13-18. Overman says the city and county will apply for a North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund grant in January 2008 to begin work on the 34 acres. “If we get the grant money as anticipated in June 2008, then in July we will start construction of the baseball complex,” he says. “This has been a long time coming. Right now, many of our youngsters must travel to Camden County in order to play in baseball leagues.” Simpson says once the complexes are in operation, the city and county will work together to maintain both sites. “This is an exciting time,” he says. “Everyone is a winner in this endeavor, especially the kids who play sports in Elizabeth City and Pasquotank County.” – Kevin Litwin I M AG E S E L I Z A B E T H C I T Y. A Comprehensive Education NEW CAMPUS ON NORTHSIDE ROAD BRINGS STUDENTS OF ALL AGES TOGETHER

B

y the time the young pre-kindergarten students at Northside Elementary enroll in Pasquotank County High School, they are completely at ease with their “new” surroundings … after all, they’ve had years to learn the layout. With the opening of Elizabeth City Middle School in January 2007, the comprehensive campus takes students from learning their ABC’s all the way through the XYZ’s of advanced math. Dr. Tony Stewart, superintendent of the Elizabeth CityPasquotank Public Schools, says nearly 2,300 of the 6,400 children enrolled in the ECPPS system attend one of the three schools at the 167-acre Northside Road site. “The layout is very conducive to having three schools on the campus,” Stewart says. “It makes an ideal situation … and I think it gives students a sense of familiarity.” While each school has its own building and identity, there is clearly a sense of community and partnership among the neighbors. The older students often visit with younger children to read to them, help coach them and to serve as role models. Students in sixth through eighth grade moved into the new $14 million Elizabeth City Middle School building after the 2006-07 semester break. “It’s an outstanding facility,” Stewart says. “Everything’s new. We have lots of technology … that’s one thing we put

some money into and are continuing to do so.” He adds that interactive electronic Smart Boards are being used in math classes with much success. “You can do so much engaged learning,” he says of the technology. Stewart is quick to add that all students in the ECPPS system receive a comprehensive education – whether or not they attend classes on the Northside campus. “We try to be consistent in our programs in all of our schools,” he points out. A focus of the school system is Differentiated Learning, says Stewart. This approach recognizes that not all children absorb material in the same manner. “We have to find different ways of reaching students with the same information,” he says. Clearly the school system is meeting that goal. The American Association of School Administrators recently notified Stewart that his system’s “21st Century Learning Program” has been selected to represent North Carolina in the National Civic Star Award competition. “We were given this honor because our program exemplifies the value of community involvement to promote academic achievement for students in our district,” the superintendent says. Although the national award won’t be presented until February 2008, Stewart knows that with the system’s emphasis on excellence, the students of ECPPS are already the real winners. – Cindy Sanders I M AG E S E L I Z A B E T H C I T Y.
