Three Times Is a Charm Elizabeth City has done it again. For the third time, Elizabeth City has been recognized in the book The Best Small Towns in America. Macmillan General Reference, a division of Simon & Schuster Inc., publishes the book. The best rankings in the compilation go to towns that have low crime rates and are impressive in several other categories, including growth, per-capita income, per-capita bank deposits, proportion of young adults, number of physicians and proportion of collegeeducated residents. In addition, Money Magazine has named Elizabeth City one of the best places to live on the East Coast.

Big Meets Small Elizabeth City is a community that can offer big-city amenities in a small-town atmosphere. Residents here can visit a spa and get a facial, enjoy a workout at the gym, shop for organic food – and still know the names of their neighbors who are enjoying the same activities. The city is home to a new Pasquotank Arts Council Visual & Performing Arts Center, and several new businesses have recently moved into historic properties in the downtown district. Elizabeth City also has a number of venues to wine, dine and dance after dark.

Courts Are Now in Session Let’s roll – to the waterfront. Two brand new bocce ball courts opened in May 2008 at Mariners’ Wharf Park. Since then, there has been a game in the park near the harbor most every evening, and especially when boaters are docked. Bocce features a rectangular, enclosed court where players roll wooden balls along the court in order to score points. English settlers originally introduced the game to the United States, and George Washington even had a bocce court built on his property.

lizabeth City’s nickname has long been Harbor of Hospitality, and it’s easy to see why. Boats bob in the harbor while pelicans fly overhead and pods of porpoises play within view of the dock. Visitors are greeted by friendly folks, charming shops and bustling restaurants along the waterfront. “Our harbor defines us as a community – it’s what makes downtown Elizabeth City unique,” says Wayne Harris, director of the Albemarle Economic Development Commission. “It’s a very large footprint for a town this size. I’m always amazed when I look down the street and see wonderful old buildings with that beautiful harbor behind them. The harbor has made it possible for downtown to thrive, and it remains the key for our ongoing downtown renaissance.” Recent development along Elizabeth

City’s waterfront has included the launch of the popular Downtown Waterfront Market in 2008 as well as the openings of quaint small businesses such as The Chocolate House in 2007. The Waterfront Market is open on Saturdays from May through October and offers fresh produce, baked goods, gourmet coffee, plants and flowers, arts and crafts, cooking demonstrations and live music under 24 bright white tents. “The Waterfront Market has just the right combination of local farm products and local arts and crafts,” Harris says. “If it were just crafts, people might not come every Saturday. But there’s also produce, which needs to be purchased weekly. And the crafts make it a fun place to hang out and look around.” The Chocolate House is one of several one-of-a-kind businesses in the downtown waterfront area. Others include Page After Page Bookstore, Muddy Waters

Coffeehouse and Cypress Creek Grill. The Chocolate House owner Kathy Dowdy chose to open her business downtown because of her passion for its history. “The candy industry played a role in downtown Elizabeth City’s history,” Dowdy says. “Weatherly Candy Co. used to thrive here, and they were in the building right next to me. History books mention how the smell of hard candies like peach buds and cinnamon rocks always floated in the air throughout the 10

city. It was my dream to bring that back and help bring charm back to downtown.” The Chocolate House specializes in European French chocolate and makes hand-dipped truffles, gourmet candy apples, turtles, clusters and other confections. “We recently expanded by about 900 square feet into the space next door, so now people can watch us making candy apples and dipping truffles,” Dowdy says. “Children especially love to see what’s happening.”

Other downtown attractions include the Museum of the Albemarle, which depicts the story of people in the region from Native Americans to the first English-speaking colonists; the Encore Theatre Company, a community theater that presents musicals, comedies and dramas; and the Pasquotank Arts Council, which features an art gallery and workshops in music, visual arts, drama and creative writing. “It’s a very exciting time in Elizabeth City – there’s a lot going on,” says Steve ELIZABETH CIT Y

Atkinson, Elizabeth City mayor. “Our downtown attractions are either free or very inexpensive, and we have several annual events, like our sailboat races. We also have carriage rides through our historic district, and fishing and crabbing are always popular.” In 2008, the city launched a new program called Cruise the Carolina Loop that encourages boaters to tie up their boats at Elizabeth City’s free dock and spend a few relaxing days in town. “There are restaurants and a theater ELIZABETH CIT Y

within walking distance, and there are bed and breakfasts where people can stay overnight,” Atkinson says. “It’s great for people who want to go somewhere without having to spend a lot of money.” Elizabeth City is already a favorite stop for boaters traveling along the Intracoastal Waterway. The community welcomes nearly 2,000 boats annually to the city-owned dock, and there is free WiFi access along the waterfront as well as dockside deliveries of groceries and other necessities from local merchants.

lizabeth City hosts several highly anticipated community events throughout the year, and the venue of choice is nearly always the scenic waterfront. The River City Cycling Club’s annual Tarwheel Century bike ride takes place the last Saturday in April and draws more than 300 cyclists. The Tarwheel Century will celebrate its 16th year in 2009. “We started with about 40 people, and last year we had 340,” says Ursula Tolson, treasurer for the River City Cycling Club. “It’s very wellorganized, and the riders are really taken care of. There are stops along the way where they can rest, drink and eat.” The North Carolina Potato Festival each May includes live music, the National Potato Peeling Contest, the Little Miss Tater Tot pageant, arts and crafts booths, free French fries, rides, food and more. The Potato Festival is organized by Elizabeth City Downtown Inc., a Main Street program that works to revitalize downtown Elizabeth City and its waterfront while preserving its historical and architectural character. In June, the waterfront hosts the annual Juneteenth celebration, named for June 19, 1865. The event commemorates the day slaves in Galveston, Texas, received word that the Civil War was over and they were finally free. Other events include Harbor Nights, a free music series from June to August, and Taste of the Albemarle, where more than 20 local restaurants serve up their specialties. – Jessica Mozo

on’t be fooled by the name. Dismal Swamp State Park is generating excitement and appreciation. The Park, which opened in March 2008, has approximately 16 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails as well as a $2.2 million, 5,600-square-foot Visitors Center, which serves as both Park entrance and classroom. The Park is across from the Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center on U.S. 17 near the Virginia state line, and is accessed by a $1.3 million, 80-foot floating barge bridge over the Dismal Swamp Canal. Dismal Swamp’s been around a long time, but the Park has been slow to arrive. The land has been state property since 1974, but had been set aside as a natural area and, thus, not developed. When it was decided that it could be turned into a State Park, Penny Leary-Smith, director of the Welcome Center and a longtime booster of the idea, was thrilled. “The public has always looked across the canal from here at the swamp, and people always wanted to know how to get over there,” says Leary-Smith, who has been at the Center for 19 years. “About 15 years ago I talked to someone within the state park system about developing it, and eventually the legislators began to support the idea and the funding was made available. It’s really been a lot of people working together.” Superintendent Joy Greenwood says the Park has already been more popular than anyone could have imagined. From her vantage point in the Visitors Center, which includes an exhibit hall, gazebos and decks, she can certainly appreciate how far the vision has come. “It’s just a neat place, and very different than what people are used to in a Park,” Greenwood says. “From our parking area they come across the bridge, which is our only point of access and why our hours are limited. We can only be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. due to U.S. Coast Guard regulations that won’t allow us to operate the bridge at other times.” The bridge, which is raised and lowered on two hydraulic systems and swings from its center on a hydraulic arm, was built in that fashion so that boats could continue to have canal access, she explains. The Park’s steady stream of visitors enjoy the walking and hiking trails, which were formerly used as logging roads so are wide and easy to traverse. But eventually everyone finds time for

ELIZABETH CIT Y

a stroll through the Visitor’s Center, which has both cultural and natural exhibits as well as an auditorium for the Park’s own programming and for community activities. There’s also a classroom that’s seeing plenty of use for hands-on school programs. And even though the Park has yet to celebrate its first birthday, Greenwood and her staff are busy planning the next wave of construction. “We have the 300-foot boardwalk, with a 20-by-20-foot platform on its end, extending into the swamp,” she says. “We’ve received grant money to add another 2,000 feet and we are hoping to have the project completed by summer 2009. We’re also getting outdoor exhibit panels with information about the Park’s plants and animals, which will be installed along the boardwalk and some trails.”

ounger singles and families have long sought the area’s homes and condos, but as the baby boomers start to plan retirement parties, they’re looking at relocation options as well. These discriminating buyers are looking for a checklist of amenities – and Elizabeth City scores well. “We have been chosen as one of the best small towns in America, even being published in a book of the best small towns,” says Phyllis Bosomworth, broker in charge at Long & Foster Real Estate. “That’s attracted some people here, but our location has had a lot to do with it as well. We’re halfway between Florida and New York – a lot of people don’t want to be in Florida, the taxes are too high; they don’t want to be in the Northeast because of the winters. We’re in the middle.” North Carolina’s heavy concentration of military bases means many retirees stay in the area, either keeping homes they’ve purchased while in service or downsizing to something smaller. The scenery is a major draw. “Northeastern North Carolina is a beautiful area, and we’re still sort of undiscovered,” Bosomworth says. “We’re not suffering from high traffic or a lot of crime, and so it’s a great place to live. We’re close to the metro areas, as well as the resorts of the Outer Banks, so you’ve got the best of both worlds.” The area’s burgeoning 55-and-up population hasn’t escaped the notice of its hospitals and health-care providers, meaning that medical needs are easily met on the local front as well. “We have every type of doctor available here,” Bosomworth says. “We’ve got heart surgeons, neurosurgeons, all the specialists that people need, and a hospital with an excellent reputation. We’re very fortunate in that regard.” Restaurants and retail stores also are flourishing, as well as theater and other entertainment options, rounding out the picture of a small town with plenty of big-city activities. “There are shows at the College of the Albemarle and Elizabeth City State

ELIZABETH CIT Y

University,” she says. “There are also plenty of groups of people, clubs with all kinds of activities. It’s gotten to where there’s a show, a restaurant opening or some kind of activity just about every weekend. There’s plenty to get involved in if a person is interested in what’s going on around them.”

Whew. And who thought retirement would be all about learning to knit and maybe picking up the occasional sand dollar along the beach? “There’s lots to do here, which makes it a wonderful small town,” Bosomworth says. “And people are finding that out.”

ot many people can say they’ve prepared food for a president. But two chefs in Elizabeth City can truthfully make that claim. When Bill Clinton stopped in Elizabeth City in May 2008 for a speaking engagement, he and his entourage ordered breakfast takeout from The Pineapple Café. “I still have the receipt,” says Jomie Cartwright, owner of The Pineapple Café. “They ordered veggie omelets with Swiss cheese and no mushrooms, four turkey sausages, four sweet potato biscuits and four sweet potato cinnamon rolls.” The Pineapple Café technically isn’t even open for breakfast – it’s lunch only – and they don’t serve turkey sausages. But cooking breakfast for Clinton was an opportunity they didn’t want to miss. “The only thing we didn’t have was the turkey sausages, so we ran to Food Lion and got some,” Cartwright recalls. Open since June 2007, The Pineapple Café includes a bakery and is locally famous for its made-from-scratch sweet potato cinnamon rolls, which are baked by Cartwright’s father. The café also serves a popular Pineapple Barbecue Wrap, broccoli salad and several creative burgers. “The night before Bill Clinton came to town, my dad got a call at 11 p.m. from the Secret Service asking if we could provide breakfast the next morning. We don’t even know how they got his phone number,” Cartwright says. “The next morning a lady called at 8 a.m. with their order, and later, three Secret Service men pulled up in a black car to pick it up. They were all dressed in black, and they came and poked their 16

heads in the kitchen to say hi. They were really nice. We gave them sweet potato cinnamon rolls, and they loved them.” Soon after, Cartwright saw Clinton’s vehicle pull up. She presumes he ate breakfast inside the car, because he later emerged and walked toward the university. “Two weeks later, I got his book, Giving, in the mail, and he had signed it,” Cartwright says. Brian Marshall, another Elizabeth City chef, has cooked for President George W. Bush – multiple times, in fact. Marshall, the owner of his own catering company and an active-duty U.S. Coast Guard member, travels to Washington, D.C., about a dozen times a year to help prepare buffets for White House events. “I work big parties like congressional picnics and inaugural balls,” Marshall says. “I cooked in restaurants all through high school, and when I joined the Coast Guard, they sent me to culinary school. The first time I ever cooked at the White House was in June 2007 for a congressional picnic. We worked with Paul Prudhomme, a world-famous chef, and his whole crew. We had fried chicken, blackened red snapper, butter beans, shrimp and other dishes.” In 2008, Marshall worked the same congressional picnic, this time serving homemade corn dogs, among other things. “They eat the same picnic food everybody else eats,” he

“The first time I ever cooked at the White House was in June 2007 for a congressional picnic.” says. “It’s just made from scratch.” Marshall has also helped with White House dinner parties for guests such as the prime minister of Israel and Pope Benedict XVI. “I go back for two weeks at Christmas time to help with holiday dinner parties,” he says. Marshall has lived in Elizabeth City for 17 years and considers it home. He says he feels fortunate to be able to serve in the Coast Guard while living at home with his wife, Nikki, and their children. “Not many people get to be in the military and be stationed in their hometown,” he says.

hen the U.S. Coast Guard base was commissioned to Elizabeth City in 1940, it laid the foundation for an important industry of the future. Today, the aviation industry is the undisputed backbone of Elizabeth City’s economy. The region continues to reach economic milestones in aviation. In 2008, the Elizabeth City Aviation Research and Development Commerce Park, which is located on Weeksville Highway, served as the launching pad for this important industrial sector. The 63-acre, high-tech business park is adjacent to the Elizabeth CityPasquotank County Regional Airport and eventually will be home to four aviation-specific companies. Each of the four 80,000-square-foot buildings under construction will have taxiways to provide direct access to the airport. Overall, the park is expected to create 500 new jobs in the community with around $150 million of projected private investment being funneled into the Elizabeth City economy. Additionally, the Elizabeth City State University School of Aviation Science and a College of the Albemarle airframe and power plant maintenance program will be located at the park. “The idea behind the park is to create an aviation cluster,” says Wayne Harris, director of the Albemarle Economic Development Commission. “The presence of ECSU and COA in the park will give industry the workers it needs while giving residents the opportunity to train for well-paying jobs.” Growth in the local aviation industry is already occurring. TCOM L.P., an aviation manufacturing company that has operated in Elizabeth City since 1973, is in the

process of completing a 40,000-squarefoot facility that will add 100 new jobs to the community. The expansion represents important manufacturing growth for the company, something made possible thanks to the strong business environment that is created by city officials. “Elizabeth City has been a good fit for TCOM because of the outstanding relationships we have developed with many government officials at the city, state and federal level,” says TCOM Chairman of the Board John Saverino. “Each has demonstrated a strong desire and commitment to work with us to create a stronger business. And that has allowed us to foster strong job growth within Elizabeth City.” The $3 million expansion of TCOM’s airship production and maintenance facility will translate into a doubling of the company’s workforce. “It is always nice to have a manu-

facturing company,” Harris says. “Those jobs pay much higher than average wages. Plus, TCOM is a wonderful manufacturer to have because everyone loves airships and blimps.” The facility will be used to produce the mooring systems for aerostats, helium-filled balloons used for surveillance, as well as to develop and test the aerostats for communications use during emergencies. With locations also in Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C., TCOM is the only aviation company in the world with a facility devoted to aerostat and airship manufacturing, assembly, flight-test and training operations. A $70,000 One North Carolina grant and an additional $10,000 for Pasquotank County provided the necessary financial assistance to help meet the needs of the expanding industry. The county also installed a new water line for the park.

WATCH MORE ONLINE | Watch the Wine Sellar’s baker at work in our quick online video at imageselizabethcity.com. The City Wine Sellar hosts a wine-tasting on the first Wednesday of each month.

WATERFRONT WINE One block off the downtown waterfront, the City Wine Sellar has become the “place to be” for area residents and visitors to downtown Elizabeth City. Debbie Malenfant bought the retail wine shop, bakery and deli five years ago. Customers flock to the shop and eatery for the large selection of fine wines and deli specialties, the Friday night music series and the monthly wine tastings. “The first few wine tastings were very structured, but it didn’t feel comfortable enough,” Malenfant says. “Everyone is not ready to try the same wines at the same time. We wanted people to mingle and socialize.” Now approximately 50 to 80 tasters come to enjoy a sample of six different wines at each gathering, Malenfant says. Guests also fill the shop during breakfast and lunch when they come to enjoy the fresh-baked bread, breakfast sandwiches and the popular Tom Turkey sandwich with turkey, homemade herb mayonnaise, provolone cheese and cranberry sauce on wheat. 20

“Everyone is not ready to try the same wines at the same time. We wanted people to mingle and socialize. ” LET THE SUN SHINE IN With increased gas prices keeping travelers off the road, more people are spending their money to create a vacation feel at home, says Theresa Swimme, who with her husband, Mark, owns Swimme & Son Sunrooms. For the sunroom business, this economic reality has a silver lining. To meet the rising demand, the Swimmes opened a The Sunroom Source, a manufacturing facility that supplies their business and other dealers in the region. “About three years ago, we were left without a manufacturer that delivered the same quality sunrooms – nothing was compatible,” Theresa says. “We decided to do it ourselves. We wanted to

be able to offer customization, superior quality materials and good service.” The new endeavor is just one way that the 20-year old family business is continuing to grow. In addition to sunrooms, Swimme & Son provides fullservice remodeling, room additions and attic conversions. ALWAYS IN SEASON At Kenyon Bailey Supply, customers have come to expect a one-stop shop for all their outdoor needs. What began as a modest farm supply store in the 1930s has more than doubled in size since current owner Gary Cooper purchased it more than 20 years ago. Today the ample space holds a garden center, ELIZABETH CIT Y

flower shop, outdoor furniture center and the Wildflower Café – a haven for locals who enjoy homemade desserts and fresh pasta and chicken salads. “We haven’t forgotten our roots and where we came from,” Cooper says. “We still have some farm supply business too, but the area has changed and the economy has changed. We survived because we changed.” What hasn’t changed, according to Cooper, is the importance of employing a knowledgeable staff that provides excellent customer service. Throughout the year, customers also enjoy the changing face of the store. “At Christmas, we’re a Christmas shop and in the spring, we’re an entirely different shop,” Cooper says. “We have a new look for every season.”

service while catering primarily to smaller boats. Offering similar sales and service, D.B. City Marina also paints boat bottoms, says owner Douglas Burton. TURNING THE PAGES Like many small businesses across the country, Page After Page bookstore in Elizabeth City almost closed its doors just three years ago. Fortunately for local book lovers and downtown shoppers, owner Susan Hinkle entered the store by chance and decided to save the quaint shop on Water Street. Today, Page After Page is thriving due to an expanded inventory and focus on

community programs for local schools and businesses, Hinkle says. In addition to new books, customers can find art supplies, music, toys and gifts. Hinkle also hosts regular and special events for children and adults such as book-themed parties, writing groups, art shows and literary events for state and regional authors. “We want the store to be a place for the community to use,” Hinkle says. “When people buy online and at big chain stores, they miss the personal service and variety. That’s why it’s so important that we provide that here.” – Brandon Lowe

BOATING ENCOURAGED As a harbor town, Elizabeth City has many service-oriented marinas located along the Pasquotank River. With so many boats traveling from the Albemarle Sound to the Chesapeake Bay, there’s plenty of business to go around. Marinas in this area include The Pelican, Causeway and D.B. City. “This is the most scenic part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. There’s a lot of wildlife and untouched areas,” says Josh Owens, manager and dock master for The Pelican Marina. At the Pelican Marina, boaters, commercial fishermen and military watercraft take advantage of the marine supply store and ample rental slips. Nearby Causeway Marina offers boat sales and

he combination of scenic smalltown charm, historic ambiance and high-paying technical jobs makes Elizabeth City an easy sell. “We’re steeped in history with a community that is almost 400 years old, and yet we’re on the cusp of aviation innovation,” says Jennifer Palestrant, president of the Elizabeth City Chamber of Commerce. “We have the largest aviation Coast Guard base east of the Mississippi, three universities and a great hospital, yet we still have that wonderful small-town atmosphere.” Embracing the Coast Guard recruits and their families has been a priority for Palestrant. “One of the new things we have done is to have a ‘meet your community’ event, where we had the hospital, the schools, the museums and businesses set up booths so that the Coast Guard families could have a one-

stop shop to get better acclimated to the community,” she says. With about 700 active military here, plus 800 or so contractors doing business with the military, the Coast Guard’s economic impact is substantial. Consequently, workforce development is important to the chamber. “We work closely with the school systems and our three universities to make sure students here are qualified to work or to pursue higher education,” she says. Keeping members informed is another key. “We all hate surprises, so we work really hard to make sure people have an opportunity to know what’s coming,” Palestrant says. “We work with our governments and other entities to create one vision for where we want the community to go. If we don’t go in the same direction, we will go nowhere.” – Betsy Williams

lizabeth City is serious about making boaters feel welcome. The city’s harbor, located on the Pasquotank River, is a favorite stop for thousands of boaters who travel the Intracoastal Waterway each year. Those boaters spread the word about this Harbor of Hospitality, a name the community earned for the warm welcome the visitors receive. For example, boats can tie up free for two nights at the city-owned dock. When five or more boats are docked, the visitors are treated to a wine and cheese reception – not as a matter of community business or public relations, but to show kindness and fellowship. Leading the welcome party for the last 25 years are the Rose Buddies, a volunteer group of Elizabeth City’s friendly faithful. “The Rose Buddies go hand-inglove with this idea of Harbor of Hospitality,” says Dave Thomas, current head of the Rose Buddies. “We continue to be the only community that throws a welcome party for guests. It’s a catalyst for fellowship.” Thomas continues the tradition of original Rose Buddies, Joe Kramer and Fred Fearing. The two greeted boaters with a warm smile, a hardy welcome and a rose. Current members include Thomas’ wife, Charlotte, and Susan Hartley. “We are going to be very much true to the tradition,” Thomas says. “When we have five boats down there we are going to have a party.” Dressed in Rose Buddies shirts and Mariner’s Wharf caps, the three are easy to spot. Part of their mission is to answer questions about community attractions and services. This welcoming tradition has put Elizabeth City on the nautical map for American and international boaters along the Intracoastal Waterway.

owntown Elizabeth City is filled with activity. New businesses are opening, people are shopping and dining, music plays and boats gently bob in the water. Today’s vibrant downtown is the realization of the best laid plans. “We are right on the edge of just exploding,” says Debbie Sauls, chair of Elizabeth City Downtown Inc. This renaissance is thanks in part to the corridor’s proximity to the harbor, but also is a credit to the foresight of a handful of Elizabeth City investors. Since the mid-1990s, developer Brant Wise has renovated several freestanding properties in the city’s historic downtown, using a hybrid-building plan that combines residential and commercial. The Robert C. Martin Building, named for Wise’s late business partner, was converted from an abandoned turn-of-the-century Ford assembly plant into residential, retail, office and service space. Wise says the need was clear. “There were so many vacant buildings that were going to waste,” Wise recalls. “The roofs were leaking, and people were not maintaining the structures. It gave the downtown a negative vibe. It was not reflective of Elizabeth City as a whole.” A steady rise of professional offices‚ restaurants and specialty retail shops in the area has combined nicely with Wise’s effort to create waterfront condominiums and apartments. The corridor also boasts improved sidewalks, new landscaping and lighting. As an added bonus, Wi-Fi is available throughout downtown. The efforts are paying off. Professionals, artists and retirees are rediscovering downtown and locating offices and galleries, or choosing to live in the heart of it all. ELIZABETH CIT Y

Slow Down and Sip the Tea A

s a child living in the Appalachian region of Virginia, Cotrisha Aycock had sassafras tea every afternoon with her grandmother. That ritual taught her the value of tea time and forged a passion for the beverage that is brewed daily at her Harbour Tea House. “I just decided that this is what I needed to do,” says Aycock. “It wasn’t a dream. It wasn’t something I longed for. I always say the idea was a divine intervention. It was just dropped right into my head and it wouldn’t go away.” After participating in a tea seminar in Dallas, Aycock, who was formerly a court reporter, took a chance and opened the teahouse in early 2008 with her husband, Tommy. The Harbour Tea House is located on South Poindexter Street in a building listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The teahouse features multiple tearooms, including a Tea Loft, that are used as gathering places for small groups. The spaces also play host to a variety of special events, ranging from book club meetings to small weddings, with Aycock adjusting the menu to accommodate each event. “I cook for them like I am having a special party at my home,” says Aycock. “Because that is what tea time is – a special time.” The daily lunch menu, which includes sandwiches, soup, salad, scones and desserts, has also made the teahouse into a lunch destination. Aycock imports tea from all over the world, including Sri Lanka, Japan, Madagascar, South America and India. Although a myriad of teas are available, the Harbour Tea House’s signature drink is the Coconut Pou Chong, a 2007 Tea Expo Award Winner. Aycock also sells tea in bulk by the 4-ounce pack to some customers who insist on having a sip before bed.

Small Vineyard, Inviting Atmosphere W

eeksville Vineyards and Cellars is one of more than 70 vineyards in North Carolina, but few can match its peaceful combination of great wine and a relaxing atmosphere. “I don’t want to be a big farmer, just a wine grower, says owner Mack Sawyer. “For us, ‘quaint’ is the word. Nearly five years ago, Sawyer planted a 5-acre vineyard of muscadines on the 45-acre Berry Sawyer Farms. The vineyard’s great location on Salem Church Road offers a chance for

Sawyer runs the business with his wife, Faye, whose family had owned the farm. Still in the early stages of growth, the vineyard is going into its fourth year, which is when grapes generally establish the vine. Sawyer continues to plant ahead for future grape production. ne of the most beautiful homes in eastern North Carolina has carried Elizabeth City’s history through the ages and into the future. Bayside Manor, which sits amidst a 10-acre wooded area, was built in 1856 and has since been owned by three families, including entertainer Wayne Newton. The Greek Revival-style home boasts eight fireplaces and a large Gothic-style staircase. In 2008, the antebellum plantation home was named the area’s first Designer House. The event, which had 11 sponsors, benefited Arts of the Albermarle and its effort to refurbish the Lowry Chesson building, a 110-yearold vaudeville theater that will be the new home for the arts group. The event was a success, says event publicity coordinator Angela Stone of the Manuli-Stone real estate team. “The house continues to inspire people’s interests in the community,” Stone says. “Everybody involved had a level of excitement that was amazing.” The theme of the program was: Embracing the Past and the Present through Design. In accordance, 15 designers and landscapers from around the southeast worked on the 5,000-square-foot home. The elegant and sophisticated manor featured 19 refurbished and decorated design areas, including a grand foyer, gentlemen’s library, a fantasy playroom and an in-law suite that served as a café and boutique. A local high school student also helped design a room as a senior project. “It was so amazing to see the many ways this house was tied to the community,” Stone says. “Elizabeth City is beginning to be a small town on the move.” See www.baysidemanortour.com for more information. – Stories by Brandon Lowe I M AG E S E L I Z A B E T H C I T Y. (New) Home at Last INTERMEDIATE STUDENTS, PARENTS, EDUCATORS CELEBRATE COUNTY’S NEWEST SCHOOL BUILDING

B

y any measure, the Camden County school system is a topquality system that works to ensure the best outcome for every student. The system offers such initiatives as CamTech High School, a projectbased learning school with a focus on technology, as well as a strategic plan with an end goal of at least 97 percent proficiency on end-of-grade tests. What the system hasn’t had, at least not for the past 47 years, is a new building. That all changed with the January 2008 opening of the new Camden Intermediate School, a $10.6 million facility financed with a 40-year USDA Rural Development Loan. The new school houses grades four through six, says Paula Mickey, personnel/community schools director for the Camden County Schools. She says the new school has succeeded in creating much-needed breathing room at Grandy Primary School and Camden Middle School. “In the past, Grandy Primary School housed grades K-5; they now house

grades K-3. Camden Middle School housed grades 6-8 in the past; they now house grades 7-8. The new grade configuration allows room in all three schools for future growth,” Mickey says. Cooperation was key in getting the new school built, as well as tackling other facility upgrades and expansions necessary to keep the system running at full capacity, says Ron Melchiorre, superintendent. “The Camden Intermediate School project is a primary example of how the different governments can work together,” Melchiorre says. “This collaboration among federal, county, school and construction officials brought this project in on time and under budget. The school is something that the citizens of Camden County can be very proud of.” Even after finishing one school year and starting another in the new building, Parrish Griffin says the excitement hasn’t waned. “You always worry when you’re in a new place,” says Griffin, the school’s principal. “But there was a lot of

preparation and good guidance on the project, and everything has been just eerily smooth.” Griffin was given a fairly free hand, within budgetary constraints, when it came to setting up technology in the classrooms – and it shows. “Today’s students have so much access to technology in their personal lives, we had to make sure that we can compete with every game system and electronic device,” he says. “We were able to have what we call presentation stations, which is a mobile cart and laptop computer connected to a video projector as well as a document camera. The teacher’s actions are projected onto an interactive whiteboard, and the camera records what’s being done so that if a student is absent the lesson can be shown to them the next day, or for enrichment later on.” Bells and whistles aside, Griffin says the new building has changed the entire dynamic for students and faculty alike. “It’s super clean, big enough to move around in and a change from being stuck in every nook and cranny,” he says. “It’s a good, quality environment that’s very conducive to learning.” – Joe Morris ELIZABETH CIT Y

ELIZABETH CIT Y

IAN CURCIO

A

lbemarle Hospital, which serves more than 130,000 residents in a seven-county region in northeastern North Carolina, is currently undergoing a $44 million construction and renovation project that includes the building of a new emergency department and surgery center. The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2009, and will house the two new expansions. The expansion of the emergency department is in response to the growth the hospital has experienced in emergency room patient volumes over the past few years. The expanded emergency department will allow the hospital to better meet the growing emergency-care needs of the region. Patients will continue to receive excellent emergency care in a comfortable and efficient setting. “We already have all the bells and whistles, says Sharon Tanner, president and CEO of Albemarle Health. “But they aren’t easy to use without a little elbow space. The new emergency department will provide physicians, nurses and other caregivers with the physical space necessary to better manage the needs of our patients. I believe physical comfort is very important. People coming to hospitals are very anxious. The new emergency department will provide patients and family members with space that is comforting for them. The new emergency department will have 34 treatment rooms, doubling its current capacity, which is will help reduce patient waiting times. The 38,000-square-foot emergency department will also house an additional two special care rooms for psychiatric patients and victims of sexual assault. The new surgery center is being constructed on the floor directly above the new emergency department. The center will be named after the late Dr. Zack D. Owens, a renowned local surgeon and member of Albemarle Hospital’s medical staff for four decades. A $1 million gift from the Zack D. Owens and Martha Anderson Owens Charitable Trust helped make the new center a financial possibility. The surgery center will occupy 31,000 square feet, and will include eight new operating rooms and 14 new post-anesthesia care unit beds for a total of 30 post anesthesia care beds. “The new surgery center will accommodate a 10 percent increase in annual surgeries performed at Albemarle Hospital, says Tanner. “The current operating rooms were constructed between 1978 and 1990 and don’t as easily accommodate the kinds of advanced equipment used today. The new, larger operating rooms will provide our surgical team with optimum space to accommodate the technology and staff required for 21st-century surgical procedures. Albemarle Hospital is a full-service regional health-care facility, capable of meeting most of the inpatient and outpatient care needs of the Albemarle Region. – Brandon Lowe

Art Goes Global TWO LOCAL ARTISTS BRING INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVES TO THE CANVAS

Ultima, students and Afolayan worked together to paint a mural that illustrated the story. “The community here has provided me the opportunity to do what I do best – being creative,” Afolayan says. In the same way, Elizabeth City has provided a creative outlet for another talented artist, Alla Rossow. As a classically trained artist from the former Soviet Union, Rossow has gained worldwide acclaim for her paper collage paintings. The method, which Rossow created in her native Russia, uses tiny pieces of magazine pages that are glued together to form images, which from a distance resemble brilliantly colored paintings. “When I was an interior designer, I used to cut up pieces of paper to create images of the interiors,” Rossow says. “I had so many magazines and I admired the photography so much, I couldn’t turn them away. They were so beautiful.” As Rossow combines the hundreds of tiny images to create the whole, she often doesn’t know what she’ll end up with, she says. Her most popular works include landscapes, flowers and ocean scenes. Many of her collage creations have won awards and recognition at art shows, galleries and private collections in the U.S. and abroad. Most recently, Rossow opened her own art gallery in Elizabeth City, called Southside Gallery. “My artwork is like a puzzle,” she said. “Getting the right colors and right materials together is hard, but it’s rewarding.” – Emily Lansdell

s a young boy, Tunde Afolayan sometimes got in trouble for coming home with paint stains on his school uniform. Fortunately, the scolding didn’t keep the Nigerian native from developing into a world-renowned artist who has made his home in Elizabeth City. Known for their vibrant colors, evocative expressions and nat ural images, Afolayan’s paintings also define his values, history and culture. “The way Africans perceive art is different than the Western perspective,” Afolyan says. “It’s a way of life – it’s part of who you are, your soul and your spirit. There’s no way you can separate the arts from African life.” Since moving permanently to the U.S. in 1990, Afolayan has been sharing his artistic perspective within the Elizabeth City community for six years. Through murals and paintings, workshops, residencies and adjunct teaching at Elizabeth City State University, Afolayan seeks to make a lasting impact. “I want to work to create a culture that cultivates art,” Afolayan said. “When students are exposed to learning concepts in a fun, exciting environment, they will retain the concepts they learn.” In October, Afolayan led a reading initiative project for local high school students funded through the National Endowment for the Arts, the Big Read Grant, the PasquotankCamden Public Library and Arts of the Albemarle. After reading the Rudolfo Anaya’s Latino classic Bless Me,

Nigeria native Tunde Afolayan shares his artistic perspective. Right: Russia native Alla Rossow has opened her own gallery in Elizabeth City.

n 2005, when head golf professional David Mascitti first came to work at The Pines, a semi-private golf club in Elizabeth City, the course was undergoing major renovation. Since then, he has seen the course blossom into one of the finest golf destinations in the Southeast and an invaluable resource for the Elizabeth City community. “The transformation has been unbelievable. We’re still growing‚” Mascitti says. “It’s very exciting.” The course is nestled in the Albemarle pine thickets and boasts a range of ELIZABETH CIT Y

challenges from elevated greens to multiple water and bunker features. Owner Bill Taylor purchased The Pines in 2004 from the club membership and quickly began to enhance the course. Though most of the original corridors have remained true to the 1946 design of acclaimed golf course architect Fred Findlay, modern amenities have increased interest in the course since it reopened in 2005. Award-winning course designer Tom Clark of Ault, Clark and Associates led the renovations, which include new A1 and A4 bent grass greens with

419 Bermuda fairways. Other features include sand bunkers, a new practice range and a network of eight-foot-wide concrete cart paths. Three lakes were added and full-service practice facilities have been enhanced to feature target greens, fairways, chipping areas and a putting green. The par-72 course has five sets of tees that range in play from 5‚101 yards to 7‚017 yards. “We like to believe that a few of our holes match Pinehurst,” says Mascitti, referring to the nearby historic course. “From the back tees, the course is a real challenge for the better golfers.” Since the redesign, amateur and junior events have become a growing focal point at The Pines. The club’s Junior Golf League plays during the fall, spring and summer, with those under 17 playing free. Sponsors donate $100 per junior golfer to make the program possible. The league allows young golfers a chance to play the course in foursomes with a club or staff member there to answer questions and help juniors develop their skills and learn all aspects including etiquette and rules. “It’s not a formal ‘Golf 101’ lesson,” Mascitti says. “It is a group effort. The best part of the program is that it is mainly spent out on the golf course.” The club also offers a Junior Membership as part of its youth outreach strategy. For just $35 a month and a onetime initiation fee of $100, young golfers have a chance to play at the first-class golf course in their own back yards. – Brandon Lowe I M AG E S E L I Z A B E T H C I T Y.
