ure, Barren County has gorgeous scenery and plenty of outdoor recreation. But it’s also home to quirky attractions you won’t find anywhere else. From the world’s longest cave system to a wigwam village and forests filled with life-sized dinosaur statues, this region is full of one-of-a-kind destinations. Dinosaur World in Cave City is an outdoor attraction that features more than 100 huge dinosaur replicas displayed in natural settings along a half-mile paved walkway. “Each of the dinosaurs is arranged in groups, herds or families and is accompanied by a plaque with information about the dinosaurs, says Marketing Director Nicole Randall. “We also have two new exhibits – the Boneyard, where guests can use archeological tools to uncover a life-size dinosaur skeleton; and the Mammoth Gardens exhibit, where kids can actually climb on the mammoths. Children also enjoy sifting through sand at the park’s fossil dig, especially because they get to take home three of the authentic fossils they find. In addition, a museum, a movie cave with educational films, and numerous interactive exhibits entertain the 70,000-plus people who visit Dinosaur World each year. To find it, just watch for the 40-foot T-Rex towering beside Interstate 65. Also in Cave City, Kentucky Action Park is home to the only alpine slide in the state – and it delivers a ride to remember. A scenic chairlift carries visitors to the top of a mountain,

and a sled carries them back down via a thrilling quartermile course. The area offers some unforgettable accommodations at Wigwam Village, where the guestrooms resemble American Indian teepees. Wigwam Village has been in operation for 72 years and is a registered historic landmark. Each teepee includes private bathrooms, cable television, and heating and air conditioning. Numerous other attractions have grown up through the years around Mammoth Cave National Park and central Kentucky’s cave country. Mammoth Cave itself, with 365-plus miles of mapped passageways, is the world’s longest surveyed cave. Its peculiar formations, such as the Giant’s Coffin, Drapery Room, Star Chamber and Frozen Niagara, along with the sheer size of this natural wonder, draw millions of visitors to Barren County each year. Nearby Diamond Caverns in Park City also shows off nature’s sculptures, from the Haystack – a formation that measures 13 feet tall and 58 feet around the base – to hanging calcite crystal, sometimes called “cave bacon, and aragonite formations. Just outside Barren County is a popular attraction called Kentucky Down Under – a unique, interactive Australian animal park with kangaroos, rainbow lories, snakes and more. Guests can also head “down under into the park’s own Kentucky Caverns for additional family-oriented fun.

ravelers to and through Barren County can always find a relaxing place to stay – complete with homemade meals and friendly conversation – thanks to the region’s growing number of bed-and-breakfasts. Many visitors travel to the area to see Mammoth Cave, but the gorgeous countryside is another big draw for weekend getaways. Bedand-breakfasts can be found in historic homes or on peaceful farms, and each place offers its own character and charm. Hall Place Bed and Breakfast – an 1852 home near downtown Glasgow – counts Abraham Lincoln among its distinguished visitors. Built by slaves, the historic structure was a stop along the Underground Railroad. Current owners Karin and Gary Carroll reopened the bed-and-breakfast in April 2006, and they’ve met many new people – including a few relatives – along the way. “Right after we moved in, we were told that the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) used to have meetings here, Karin Carroll says. “After talking to one lady and doing some research, I found that I had some relatives here. And then I found out that a cousin built this house. When I lived out west I wasn’t related to anyone, so this has been kind of fun. Hall Place includes a map of the United States with markers showing visitors’ home cities and states – and international visitors can post their home countries on a nearby ribbon. The Narrow Way Bed & Breakfast opened in April 2008 after being converted from a private residence. Owners Roger and Karan Johnson had always wanted to run a bed-and-breakfast, and the business gives Karan – a nurse – the chance to use her people skills in new ways. “I’m used to doing for others, and this was a chance to combine that with cooking, which I also love to do, she says. Johnson’s cinnamon rolls have become quite popular, and the business is becoming known as an events destination. “Special events have been a big surprise to us, not something we expected at all, Johnson says. “We think once we start to promote ourselves, we’ll do even better.

A little farther out of town is Serenity Hill Bed and Breakfast, open since 2005. Owners Debra and James Lawler found the place for sale online, and they haven’t looked back. “We fell in love with the property, and had been through the area several times, Debra Lawler says. “We did our homework, and it’s just been wonderful. We get people from all around the country and the world, and everywhere in between. The story is similar at the Four Seasons Country Inn, where country tranquility is the order of the day (and night). The 20-year-old inn is a mainstay for frequent business travelers to the area, as well as visitors who revel in its rustic charm, says Carole Smith, one of a local group that owns the property. “When we opened, there was just one old hotel, and I worked at a factory where clients would come and have no place to stay, Smith recalls. “So an office partner and I worked on building this place. Smith says it’s been fun watching the world discover Glasgow and Barren County, one visitor at a time.

iners are all fired up about the restaurant scene in Glasgow, and with good reason. Restaurants here routinely receive great reviews from guests and food critics alike, and the city is home to a multitude of excellent places to eat. To make the culinary scene even more satisfying, many of the restaurants in Glasgow can now serve their customers liquor by the drink, thanks to passage of a November 2007 citywide referendum. One restaurant benefiting from that action is Sorrento Italian Restaurant, which serves cocktails and wine as accompaniments to its fine menu lineup. “We are an upscale restaurant with beautiful visual amenities such as chandeliers, a fireplace, linen tablecloths and real silver flatware, says Dawn Purvis, owner of Sorrento Italian Restaurant. “And by the way, our food is quite incredible, too. Popular dishes at Sorrento’s include lobster ravioli, shrimp scampi, spaghetti marinara, chicken marsala, Chilean grilled sea bass and jumbo lump crab cakes. Tumbleweed Southwest Mesquite Grill & Bar, which cele-

The steaks, ribs, chicken, chops and seafood are grilled over a live mesquite fire, which sets Tumbleweed’s fare apart. “Our restaurant features flavors that are found in foods that have originated in Texas, Arizona and New Mexico, but customers can enjoy them right here in Glasgow, says Glenn Sheehan, general manager of Tumbleweed Southwest Grill. Some menu favorites include grilled tilapia stada with enchilada sauce, and a mesquite bison burger. “There really are many delicious and different food options in Glasgow and Barren County, Sheehan says, “which makes dining fun and so satisfying.

dd one more attraction to the list of caves and unique destinations that have drawn generations of families, spelunkers and other travelers to the south central Kentucky region. The Cream & Sugar CafĂŠ opened in 2007 to rave reviews for its comfort food and cozy atmosphere. Located in downtown Cave City, the restaurant became an instant gathering spot, where locals and tourists head for home cooking in a welcoming and unpretentious atmosphere. Sisters and co-owners Jan Stoller and Joan Newell retired from other careers in other parts of the country and decided to return home to Cave City to start a new chapter in life. They soon opened the Cream & Sugar CafĂŠ, modeled after the kind of cafĂŠ the sisters wanted to enjoy. “We wanted a place where people would feel comfortable coming in and having a conversation and a meal without feeling rushed,â€? Stoller says. “It’s a soft, cozy place.â€? The restaurant is known for its homemade soups, sandwiches and pies. Popular menu items include the chicken salad sandwich and the cattleman roast beef sandwich, made with green peppers, horseradish and cheddar cheese. The lemon pie and peanut butter pies sell out quickly. In the fall, pumpkin crisp and apple pies draw a devoted following. For Stoller and her sister, the atmosphere is as critical as the fresh ingredients used in their menu items. Renovations to their downtown space included restoring one wall to its original brick. The remaining walls are painted a soft, beeswax yellow with white trim. The original hardwood floors were sanded and restored. And the walls are covered with artwork created by local painters and photographers. The restaurant, located at 105 Broadway, is open from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday; on Sunday, it’s open from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. 5 : / A5=E

n 2009, the Glasgow Highland Games is celebrating its 24th year as a community event, honoring the Scottish heritage of the region and offering a little friendly competition to those hearty enough to participate in a stone toss or hammer throw. The event now attracts some 12,000 people on the first weekend following Memorial Day for traditional games such as the caber toss, clachneart – or stone toss – and sheaf toss. There are whisky tastings, Celtic rock concerts and a grand banquet and tartan ball. The family-friendly event has children’s activities, clan tents and, of course, a wide selection of Scottish foods. The Games began as a project of the Glasgow-Barren County Chamber of Commerce, but they quickly grew and are now overseen year-round by one full-time staff person and a host of community leaders and volunteers. The Glasgow Games are now among the top five Highland Games in the country, says Maureen Hendrick, who coordinates the festival full-time. The main festival grounds are located at Barren River Lake State Resort Park, about 15 miles from Glasgow, while most other events are scattered throughout the city, involving local businesses and residents. Glasgow is named for Glasgow, Scotland, and the area was originally settled by Scotch-Irish immigrants. The Games serve not only a gathering for families of Scottish heritage from all over the country, but they also are one of 150 different games held around the globe that lead athletes to the Scottish Games World Championships. “The Games are so unlike any other festival, Hendrick says. “Whether you’re Scottish or not, they have such a welcoming, family feel to them. 5 : / A5=E

lasgow’s oldest standing witness to history is getting a new life, thanks to the efforts of two local doctors. The Spotswood House was built in the late 18th century, before Kentucky achieved statehood. In recent decades, the Georgian-style home had fallen into disrepair. When it came on the market in 2007, local physicians Amelia and Kyle Kiser bought the home and have spent months lovingly restoring it. The husband-and-wife team “pretty much gutted everything down to brick on the inside, says Dr. Kyle Kiser. They installed a new roof and draining system, replastered the entire interior, installed plumbing from street to the interior and rewired the entire home. The restoration was designed to retain the historical accuracy of the home’s original construction. Instead of modern sheetrock, the walls are plastered. The couple retained as much of the original woodwork as possible, and any wood that had to be replaced was carved to match the original. Interior colors replicate the paint popular in the Georgian era, and the couple researched the 18th-century colonial architecture

by taking trips to Williamsburg and Mount Vernon. “We both enjoy history, and we both enjoy antiques, Kiser says. “This just fits our lifestyle and personality. Everybody has things they enjoy doing in their spare time, and this is kind of what we do. The house was originally built to serve as a home for Alexander Spotswood, whose grandfather was the first lieu-

tenant governor of Virginia from 1710-1722. His wife, Elizabeth, was George Washington’s niece by marriage, Kiser says. Today, it is home to the Kisers and their children, a 10-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son. “Glasgow has been very good to us, Kiser says. “This is the oldest house in town, and neither one of us could stand to watch it fall down.

illy Buck Brown says he can make a good marble shooter out of anyone. All it takes is a little bit of practice, learning how to lay the marble between the first and second finger and flick with your thumb. Brown, 67, is a former Kentucky state marble champion who has organized a regular game of marbles at his place every Monday night since 1994. It’s an old tradition in Barren County, Brown says, and one he hopes will continue into the next generation. Marbles is a game that costs nothing, can last between five minutes and two hours, and – most of all – brings friends together for a meal, laughs and a little friendly competition. “It’s something to fellowship with and have fun with, Brown says. “It can also get pretty fierce. We’ve got some guys who can go rabbit hunting with a marble. The rabbits jump out of the hole and hit the wall; they shoot that hard. Every Monday night, Brown gathers regulars in his workshop for a game. Games consist of nine marbles at play in a yard that measures 15 by 20 feet. The object of the game is for one team to knock out the other team’s marbles. Another local player, Paul Moore, makes the flint marbles used in the game by hand. Players travel to the Kentucky Folk Life Festival in Frankfort every two years to demonstrate the art and skill of marble playing to new generations. But, Brown says, it is sometimes a hard sell. “Kids don’t want to play, Brown says. “They’ve got their computer games and other stuff. I taught my grandkids, but they outgrew it. At Brown’s weekly game there used to be 30 regulars, but now, Brown says, “sometimes it’s hard to get up a game. No matter. As far as Brown is concerned, the game will go on every Monday night.

he Kentucky Quilt Trails wind through the picturesque back roads of the state, where roadside barns, billboards, schools, floodwalls and other buildings display colorful replicas of homemade quilts. Some 500 quilts have been painted along Kentucky roadsides, including a traditional eight-pointed, blue and red star pattern displayed on a barn wall in northern Barren County, says Judy Sizemore, outreach director for the Kentucky Arts Council. The council got the project started by publicizing the effort and advising local groups interested in participating, but “this is a grassroots, communitycontrolled project, Sizemore says. “There are no rules you have to follow. Most people paint an 8-by-8 pattern on a piece of plywood and then hang it up. Sites along the trail are available in a map on the Kentucky Arts Council’s Web site. The council has also published a book 5 : / A5=E

of photographs of quilts along the trail. The idea was a natural for Kentucky, Sizemore says. “Quilting is such a broad, regional tradition, she says. “The entire state is involved in quilting in some way. Most counties have a quilting association of some kind, and it’s still very much a community tradition. While we have a lot of individual quilters, there are still a lot of groups of quilters that work together. Kentucky is home to The National Quilt Museum, also known as The Museum of the American Quilter’s Society, in Paducah. The quilt in northern Barren County is displayed on property located at 4411 Lynwood Drive, and Sizemore says that more quilts are expected to be painted in the county soon. ith its rolling countryside and wide-open spaces, Barren County has always been a prime spot for agriculture. These days, a growing number of farms are turning to horse-related businesses, including boarding, breeding and training. There’s even a retirement home and dentist for horses. Since 1971, Tom and Sue Shone have owned and operated Solitaire Farm, which specializes in Arabian horses with Russian bloodlines. The farm has expanded to 135 acres over the past 30 years, and the Shones now share responsibilities with their daughter, Debra, a professional trainer, and granddaughter, Katie Yoakum. “People appreciate horses in this state, and thoroughbred racing has a lot to do with that, Sue Shone says. “But the gentle, rolling land here is good for horses, as is the climate, and the prices for hay, grain and suppliers are much more reasonable around here. Half of the roughly 100 horses at Solitaire Farm are breeding stock. The rest are boarders or are used for riding lessons. Supervising it all is Amira Azalea, a 30-year-old mare who’s been around since she was six months old. “She’s the queen of the farm, that’s for sure, Shone says. Spencer Benedict is another longtime resident who has found success in the equine arena. He has owned and operated Spencer Benedict Stables since

returning to Barren County from Tennessee in 2002. With around 70 acres, Benedict raises and shows Tennessee Walking horses. Depending on the time of year, he has anywhere from 80 to 140 on the property. “I’ve been in horses all my life, and began showing when I was 10, Benedict says. “I began training them professionally in 1990. Barren County is very good for these horses, and horses in general, because it’s an agriculture-oriented area. People like to keep a horse so they can go out and ride. The area’s horse population has grown to such a level that it has its own spin-off industries, including two – Natural Balance Dentistry and First Light’s Run Retirement Farm – that are operated by Dawn Darnell. Darnell became interested in putting horses out to pasture about the same time she began training to be an equine dentist. “We found a lot of people up north who were looking for a place to retire show horses, and so we have 10 now from all across the United States, she says. Darnell will be fully certified as an equine dentist in May 2009, but she has already been able to work all over Tennessee and Kentucky. She predicts that she’ll be even busier in the coming years. “Both businesses are doing really well, she says. “The horses roam about, and I just go out and check on them, love on them a little and make sure they have the right nutrition and hoof care. Then it’s off to do some dentistry.

renewed focus on services for small businesses is one of many ways the Glasgow-Barren County Chamber of Commerce is riding out the nation’s economic slowdown. The Chamber hasn’t really seen any drastic changes in the local market, says Ernie Myers, executive vice president. But the Chamber wants to be prepared if the national situation makes it to the regional level. “We are beginning to feel a little bit of what’s going on nationally and globally, so we feel that our biggest feature now more than ever is promoting and helping the local economy, Myers says. “And we’re doing that through different small-business programs. A popular series of small-business roundtables is slated to continue, as are seminars that address different topics of interest. Training classes in areas such as customer service are planned, which would give the Chamber more contact with companies’ employees as well as managers. “We are an advocate for local business, but we also are a commerce center for the community, Myers says. “It’s why we were created in the first place, and for that reason, we’re going back to the basics a little bit. With around 500 members, the Chamber has plenty of talent to draw from. Myers says the organization plans to put that business knowledge to work. “We house and help support the Tourist Commission, and we also work closely with the Glasgow-Barren County Industrial Development Economic Authority. We have good relationships with Glasgow Renaissance Main Street and the Community Foundation, and we’re now looking to work with Sustainable Glasgow – a new concept that will promote manufacturing, growing, and buying locally. The Chamber plans to encourage Sustainable Glasgow by continuing its own highly successful shop-local program, which injects around $250,000 a year into the local economy. – Joe Morris

“Glasgow High School has a good drama program in place, and we sometimes stage plays with a couple of parts for young people, she says. “We recently finished an adaptation of It’s a Wonderful Life, and talented students from the high school filled some of the roles admirably. An in-house committee reads 15 plays and picks the best for the troupe to stage in a given season. Plays that have already been showcased at the Plaza Theatre include Moon Over Buffalo, Saving Grace, Dracula, Lying in State, Leading Ladies, Lend Me a Tenor and The Foreigner. The group schedules three plays each year, and one is performed in February, June and October. Each play has three performances, and the presentations usually attract 700 to 800 spectators to the 1,000-seat theater. “Steve Jones runs the Plaza and is an expert with props and set design, Goodman says. “The sets that Steve oversees are incredible, and the work he did was beyond words when we staged Dracula. As for the 2009 lineup, the Far Off Broadway Players performed Steel Magnolias in February and will present Murder by the Book in June. The Players’ production of Arsenic and Old Lace will take the stage in October. – Kevin Litwin

he Far Off Broadway Players are breaking a leg again. The Glasgow-based community theater troupe formed 25 years ago and eventually disbanded when it ran out of local places to perform. But when the historic Plaza Theatre in Glasgow was refurbished and reopened a few years ago, the performers had a place to call home. The group started up again in 2006. “The Plaza originally opened in 1934 and closed in the 1990s, then was purchased by the city of Glasgow for $200,000, says Peggy Goodman, publicity director with the Far Off Broadway Players. “The city recently restored the entire building, and it looks historic once again – yet modernized and beautiful. For people coming to see our plays nowadays at the Plaza, it’s almost worth the price of admission just to see the theater. About 30 people from Glasgow and surrounding communities make up the Far Off Broadway Players. “We have people from just about every profession imaginable, Goodman says. “For example, my husband, Charlie, is an attorney who acts with the Players. A local dentist is one of our actors, and so is a gentleman who works at Mammoth Caves. And the list goes on and on. Some high school students also act with the Players.

lasgow and Barren County school districts are getting top marks for innovative education strategies – and measurable results. In both school systems, high school students are taking college courses through Western Kentucky University in Glasgow. Many Glasgow High School students are graduating with 12 hours of college credit, says Kathy Goff, superintendent of Glasgow Independent Schools.

And more than 200 juniors and seniors at Barren County High School are taking dual-credit courses. “In our strategic plan, we have an aggressive goal to establish an early college at the high school and have students graduate with an associate’s degree, says Dr. Jerry Ralston, superintendent of the Barren County School System. “We are in the second year of this six-year plan. High school-level courses, including

Latin and algebra, are being taught in the elementary and middle schools to help foster this program. The Trojan Academy, established for ninth graders, serves as a transition for students making the move from middle school to high school. “By housing freshmen in one particular facility, we’re seeing more success for those students, and we can meet their needs better, Ralston says. “Research has suggested that if we make them successful as freshmen, they will be more likely to go on and graduate. The Glasgow Independent Schools District is a member of the elite Kentucky High Performing Districts Alliance – an honor extended to districts that rank in the top 15 of the 174 districts on the Commonwealth Accountability Testing System. “Being a member of the alliance is by invitation only, Goff says. “We not only have to achieve it, but we also have to maintain it. Our district is considered an exemplary growth district, and we have met all our goals in reaching this. Sixteen percent of the system’s teachers are National Board Certified. SAT scores are above the state average in all areas, Goff says. The community’s high level of parental involvement and committed school staff has been crucial to the success of the schools, Goff says. Technology is another big factor. “We’re using technology on a daily basis, and that’s key in the way these kids learn and excel, she says. The Caverna Independent Schools District educates students in the Cave City area and boasts a 91 percent graduation rate. Glasgow Christian Academy is the area’s largest private Christian school. – Betsy Williams

ike Harris is looking forward to watching his daughter, Laura Beth, play college golf. Laura Beth’s gain is Glasgow High School’s loss. Harris was the girls’ golf coach at Glasgow High for 22 seasons, and the team won 14 regional championships during his tenure. In addition, the Scotties’ golf squad won five Kentucky state championships – in 2008 as well as four in a row from 1997-2000. Harris coached his daughter at Glasgow High for four years ending in 2008, and she will now compete for University of the Cumberlands beginning in 2009. He has stepped down from the head coaching position at Glasgow High to give him time to watch his daughter compete in college. “I am also assistant principal at the high school and will remain in that position, but I want to follow Laura Beth to all of her college matches, Harris explains. “So 2008 was my final year as golf coach for the girls, and I enjoyed every season. Harris and Glasgow High’s five Kentucky golf titles are tied for the alltime lead with Louisville Sacred Heart, a large all-girls school with an enrollment of 1,500. “We are a small school of 540 students that competes against all of the large schools, and our girls have always 5 : / A5=E

worked hard to make our program successful, Harris says. “I’ve had great parental support and couldn’t ask for better kids to work with. The girls in my program have excelled both in the classroom and on the golf course. Through the years, Harris coached four first-team all-state players, and seven girls who advanced to play college golf. Two of his former players – Taryn Durham and Whitney Wade – are also currently playing professionally on the Futures Tour, which is a step away from the LPGA Tour. “I was lucky enough to watch both Taryn and Whitney compete at the U.S.

Women’s Open – that proves just how good they both are, Harris says. Glasgow Golf & Country Club is the home course for the Glasgow High girls’ team, and Harris says the club members have always been generous to allow the team to play there. “Playing at such a quality club is just another aspect of how good the game of golf has been to the girls at Glasgow High, he says. “But I am especially proud of how the girls who I’ve coached – no matter what their level of talent – have always been better people than they are golfers. – Kevin Litwin

he Women’s Health Center – a one-stop shop for services specifically for women ranging from mammography screening to healthy menu planning – is scheduled to open in Glasgow in late summer 2009. The effort is a collaboration between the T. J. Samson Community Hospital and the Glasgow Business and Professional Women’s Club. The new center, which will be housed in a renovated 4,000-square-foot home on Glenview Drive, sits on 42 acres of land purchased by T. J. Samson Community Hospital. “[The Glasgow Business and Professional Women’s Club] has a history of working with us and donating to the hospital, says Bill Kindred, CEO of T.J. Samson Community Hospital. “When they approached us about the women’s health center, we quickly began work on a benefit gala that would kick off fundraising. The house is in the midst of being converted to an allpurpose facility that will provide preventive services such as mammograms along with a full range of other women’s services and support programs. “About 85 percent of our workforce at the hospital is women, and studies have shown that women make 90 percent of health-care decisions for their families, Kindred says. “They take care of everybody around them, but often not

themselves. We’ll be providing a lot of services in a convenient location and an aesthetically pleasing environment for them to come to. Prevention will be a key focus of the center, with heart disease and other major illnesses being addressed through diagnostic and therapeutic means. In addition to education on physical issues, classes will be offered on stress management, alternative medicine and more. Space is also planned for bone-density screening and ultrasounds in addition to mammography. “There are so many things we can do there that will promote overall health awareness, Kindred says. “We want to have a lot to offer in terms of diagnostics, but we also want to offer massage and therapeutic relaxation services. The price tag for the center will be around $300,000, Kindred says. For the Glasgow Business and Professional Women’s Club, the center is a dream come true. “We think it’s a tremendous opportunity for the women of Glasgow and Barren County, says Monica Conrad, the club’s president. “It’s the chance to have a centralized women’s center to not only seek treatment, but also diagnostic care, education and wellness information. We think it’s going to be a tremendous asset to the area. – Joe Morris

On any given day we have as many as 500 visitors, walking through our doors to participate in a program or activity that will lead to better health — and a happier life. Kids participate in after-school programs called ACTIVATE. Adults walk or run on the only indoor track in Glasgow. Seniors do stretching and toning, while socializing with friends. From toddler to teen to older adult, there is plenty to do at the Y. “We build strong kids, strong families and a strong community
