Do You Canoe? If you are a paddler, here’s good news. Henry County Parks and Recreation has opened three convenient access points for canoeists and kayakers who want to paddle the Smith River. The points have already become so popular that a fourth access spot is being planned. One of the sites is in Bassett on Trent Hill Drive behind Bassett Furniture Co., and it has convenient parking. The other two are in Fieldale off River Road and in Ridgeway on Eggleston Falls Road near the Marrowbone Bridge. All access points are open to the public, free of charge. Schools Worth Studying Henry County had more than 100 one-room schools in 1900, according to Jean Hairston. The retired Henry County teacher and administrator is hoping to compile a book that addresses the interesting subject, and has already been writing a series of articles about the oneroom sites in the Henry County School System’s County Courier. She has spent two years interviewing 85 people who actually attended the schools that existed until the 1950s. Hairston says in 1900, there were 75 one-room schools for white students and 32 for black students. Classes were held for only four months of the year because the students needed to help on family farms during the other months.

Much More Than Tomatoes It’s not your typical farmers market. The Uptown Martinsville Farmers Market has been in operation since the late 1970s and today is at the corner of Church, West Main and Moss streets. It is open Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from May through December. Besides the usual sale of fruits, vegetables and flowers, the market has vendor booths that sell pork, honey, seafood, potted herbs, soap and eggs. There are monthly Tasty Saturday events that feature chef demonstrations and live music. Vendors appreciate the market because it features amenities such as running water, electricity, restrooms and a performance stage.

Looks Like a Paper Clip Good things come in small packages, as evidenced by Martinsville Speedway. The .526-mile racetrack is the shortest on the NASCAR Nextel Cup circuit and celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2007. It has been described as a paper clip-shaped oval with tight turns and 800-foot straightaways, and there is plenty of banging and bumping of race cars during the two Nextel Cup events it hosts each year. H. Clay Earles built the speedway in 1947 as a dirt track, and it hosted the sixth race in NASCAR history. Earlesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; grandson, Clay Campbell, currently is president of the 62,000seat facility, which today is owned by International Speedway Corp.

One for the Books Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been called The Best Little Library in Virginia for good reason. The Bassett Branch Library of the Blue Ridge Regional Library System houses 63,000 items, with a monthly patronage of 4,000 people. The 6,000square-foot building is located on Fairystone Park Highway in Bassett. Across the street from the Bassett Branch Library is the Bassett Historical Center, which houses extensive genealogy records. Over the years, the center has welcomed researchers from all 50 states and beyond.

Duke Ellington Performed Here

An event that attracted entertainers such as Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Chuck Berry has been revived. The June German Ball is part of the annual June Festival that commemorates the heyday of the Fayette Street area in downtown Martinsville. The ball occurred from the 1940s through the 1960s and was brought back in 2005 by the Fayette Area Historical Initiative’s executive director, Linda Strange-Dillard. The festival commenced with a lecture session that included Alex Haley’s son, William, as a guest speaker. Saturday’s events included culture-sharing, motivational and educational speakers, and live music. Jewel Brown, former lead vocalist for the late jazz musician Louis Armstrong, headlined the 2007 ball. In the photo to the left are Strange-Dillard (at far left) and Brown. Sponsored by local businesses and community members, the 2008 festival will be held June 13-14 at the Virginia Museum of Natural History on Starling Avenue.

Spencer for Hire Spencer-Penn School is a landmark in Henry County, but now it has a different name. The 1927 building that closed in 2004 due to county school district consolidation is today known as Spencer-Penn Centre and serves as a community center. Plans are for it eventually to be rented for weddings, receptions, classes, antique sales and other events. Citizens purchased the building from the school district after it received national historical status. Fundraising currently is under way to renovate the 81-year-old structure.

Q Local artist Nicodemus D. Hufford was the creator of the Quaker Oats man, Aunt Jemima and many other famous advertising images. Q Patrick Henry Community College presents an annual Foot of the Hills Festival each September that features local musicians, crafts and interesting foods. Q Hooker Field is home to the Martinsville Mustangs, a Coastal Plain League baseball team. Q The Reynolds Homestead in Critz showcases how Hardin Reynolds and his family lived. He was a 19th century farmer, merchant, baker and tobacco manufacturer. Q Fairy Stone State Park is where tiny rocks called fairy stones were formed millions of years ago. They exist in four different and distinct shapes – the St. Andrew’s stone, a Maltese cross, a Roman cross and a single crystal.

ooking for a place to put down roots? The Martinsville and Henry County area appeals to people of all ages, whether they’re searching for a fertile environment to grow a business or a scenic and affordable place to retire. Jim Barnett and his wife, Nancy, wanted to move from Canada to the United States to retire in the ’90s, and they considered several different cities. Then fate stepped in. “We were just driving through Martinsville and saw a house my wife liked,” Barnett says. “We put an offer in and bought it.” Barnett spent his first six months in Martinsville fixing up the couple’s new home. However, it wasn’t long before he decided to come back out of retirement, launching his real estate company, Barnett Commercial Realty Inc. “I woke up one morning and decided I needed to do something,” he recalls. “I saw an opportunity to do some commercial real estate, and I had done it in Canada. I started with myself and one other girl, and now there are seven of us. We handle something on the order of $50 million worth of real estate annually.” Barnett has also gotten involved in several community groups and volunteering. He was named Realtor of the Year in 2000 and Small Business Person of the Year in 2005. “Martinsville is a very open and welcoming community,” Barnett says. “I didn’t know anybody, and people were very friendly, whether it be in church or civic groups.” Rob Pigford and his wife, Sandra DeChard, enjoyed the MARTINSVILLE- HENRY COU NT Y

same warm welcome when they moved to Martinsville in 2004. “We love our house, our neighborhood and the low cost of living,” says Pigford, 37. “The terrain is beautiful, and we love getting out in the mountains. There are lots of lakes and places for hiking and boating, and you can drive just an hour to see a show and have a nice dinner out.” A mechanical engineer from Maine, Pigford came to town with MasterBrand Cabinets Inc. and found Martinsville to be an ideal place to start a business. He made a career change and in 2006 opened Theme Cuisine, a company that combines catering, refrigerated meals-to-go and a gourmet food market. “There’s so much opportunity here for people to get in on the cutting edge of things and start some funky new businesses, because there’s no competition,” Pigford says. Theme Cuisine’s prepared meals-to-go are a dream come true for working moms and dads who don’t have time to cook. They can swing by the shop in the Brookdale Shopping Center and pick up a freshly prepared meal to pop in the oven at home. “We change the menu every week to keep things interesting, and it’s on our Web site [www.themecuisine.com],” Pigford says. “We also maintain an e-mail list and fax out the menu on Monday mornings.” Grab-and-go lunch selections include items such as a Cajun catfish sandwich or creamy apple and cabbage slaw in a pita pocket and fresh corn chowder. Dinner selections might include chicken pot pie, baked pasta or a green bean dinner salad. Pigford isn’t the only young entrepreneur spicing up the business environment in Martinsville. “One of our friends started her own Web design company, and [another friend] runs Cool Knobs and Pulls, which designs and sells cabinet and bath hardware all over the world,” Pigford says. “They’re doing very well.” “This is a wonderful place for small businesses because of the low tax rate, and it’s a great place to raise a family,” says Pam Joyce, broker and owner of Pam Joyce and Associates Realtor in Martinsville. “We’re also close to the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway.” Low home prices add to Martinsville’s appeal. The average price of a home is between $90,000 and $110,000. “You can buy a nice brick three-bedroom, two-bath ranch home for around $100,000 to $110,000,” Joyce says. “We have all home styles and price ranges. A local builder is building some cluster homes that have been really successful with retirees because they don’t require yard work or maintenance. Most have been sold before they’re even built.” Though people come to Martinsville and Henry County for different reasons, they agree on one thing: there’s no place they’d rather be. “When you travel,” Joyce says, “you come back home and realize you’re already living in one of the most beautiful places in the world.” 12

hether it’s restoring the area’s natural resources, educating kids, ensuring availability of medical services or encouraging residents to lead healthy lifestyles, Martinsville’s civic and business leaders are all focused on making their town a better place to live. For example, Dr. David Jones, an orthodontist, has donated thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours to the Trout in the Classroom program. An avid member of Trout Unlimited, Jones says the program was a natural for him. “I was at a meeting two years ago, and the program was being talked about,” Jones recalls. “Our state chair told me it was all about conservation, education, kids, fly fishing, rivers and trout, so I said I wanted to try it.” Through the program, participating elementary school classes each receive a 55-gallon aquarium and the necessary equipment to run it. The classroom tanks are stocked with trout eggs or newly hatched fish, which are then raised to the fingerling stage and released, in this case into the Smith River. From the outset, interest in the program was high. “We did about 16 the first year, and were up to 28 classrooms this year [2006-07],” Jones says. “We’ve got a waiting list of probably 10 more schools, and new ones are showing up all the time.” With the cost of each tank about $1,000, the program represents a substantial investment for Jones, but he credits his staff and patients for making the effort a success. “My staff has worked on this with me, and our patients have been the runners,” he says. “If we get a call that something’s gone out on a tank, I can usually find a student at that school or one nearby who’s coming into the office, and they run the part out there. It’s been a great supply system.” The strong cooperative spirit and community pride is also evident in the Healthy Community Initiative, an outreach of

Suite Spot the Martinsville-Henry County Coalition for Health and Wellness. Since it began as a one-year, grant-funded project in 2004, Healthy Community has grown and expanded in just about every direction, says Diane Ramey, program director. “Our mission is to reduce health-risk behaviors and to promote health and wellness for kids, families and the whole community,” Ramey says. “We have a free aerobics class four nights a week, with about 25 participants a night, where we do height, weight and blood pressure checks over the 12-week cycle of the class. We’ve seen some great results from that.” Program administrators also worked with area schools on the Walk to Jamestown initiative, a 10-week walking program where all the participants got pedometers and kept track of their steps. It featured a Web site with recipes, health tips and facts about Jamestown, and was tied into the 400th anniversary of that historic community’s founding. And then there’s Rails to Trails, which partners with the coalition and other groups to promote the benefits of walking. “A lot of organizations here are working on quality of life issues, and so we’re working with the schools and a lot of other people,” Ramey says. Another initiative that brings education together with addressing public health needs is the city’s new dental clinic, which gives fourth-year dental students from Virginia Commonwealth University applied training through their provision of dental services to low-income individuals. “We saw that indigent care was getting to be an acute problem, because so many people had lost or didn’t have insurance,” says local dentist Dr. Mark Crabtree, president of the Piedmont Virginia Dental Health Foundation. “So we worked with the Virginia Dental Association and our congressman to get some funding to create a safety-net type of center.” The clinic began seeing patients in September 2006 and has four dental students on average working in and living above the facility in rotation, as well as dental assistants and a dentist on-site to assist the students. The clinic also has entered a partnership with Danville Community College’s dental hygiene program to offer training for those students as well. “Everybody’s got something going on, and it’s all connected, so we’re trying to partner as much as we can so we can do more to serve the city and county,” Ramey says. edia coverage of Bassett High’s baseball teams is about to get much better, thanks to a parking area expansion at Martinsville Speedway. As part of its facility renovations, the speedway is expanding RV parking near the third turn, displacing a suite overlooking the track. The 40by-12-foot structure was scheduled for demolition until Steve Martin had an idea to use it as a press box at the school. “They asked me if I knew of anyone who would want that box,” says Martin, who owns Steve Martin’s Trenching and is one of the speedway’s contractors. “I’ve been really involved with Bassett High School’s baseball and softball programs in the last six months because we’ve been building a bathroom and concession facility at the field, so I knew it could be put to good use there.” “We were just going to have it demolished, so this is a much better use for it,” says Mike Smith, director of public relations for Martinsville Speedway. “They’ve put the whole thing together in terms of getting it moved, so it’s a good situation for everybody.” Various companies have donated or reduced fees for their services in relocating the 60-seat suite, including the crane operator, architect, hauler, plumber and others. “We knew it would be an undertaking, but I just hated to see it lost,” Martin says of the suite box. Several of these businesses already were involved in the bathroom/concession stand effort, so the two projects have dovetailed nicely, Martin says. The latter project came about when the baseball booster club pledged about a third of the funds from money earmarked toward facility improvements, and the rest of the needed $90,000 was raised by a tireless group of parents and supporters. – Joe Morris

n a thriving arts environment, the Patrick Henry Community College Artisan Center in Uptown Martinsville is a hub for artisans, local residents and tourists alike. PHCC opened the center in a former furniture store in 2005. It includes a gallery, classes and its most recent addition – a welcome center for visitors to the area. The gallery features works in a variety of media from local artists, students and instructors from the PHCC School of Craft and Design, says Carolyn Beale, coordinator for the school of craft and design. The idea behind the visitor center is to bring people into the artisan center, as well as inform them about area attractions, says David Rotenizer, director of tourism for the Martinsville-Henry County Economic Development Corp. “There’s a lot going on in Uptown Martinsville, and we want to enhance that,” he says. “The bottom-line objective is to help the artisan center.” A new awning and a new front door, plus a circular front desk, are designed to give visitors a welcoming introduction to the arts and other area attractions. Other new features include brochure racks and a flat-screen television. The visitor center component is designed so it can be moved elsewhere if the artisan center continues to grow. PHCC offers career studies certificates at the center in stained glass, fine woodworking, pottery, decorative painting, weaving, quilting and metalworking. Noncredit classes and offerings for younger students are also available. The PHCC culinary program was moved into the center in summer 2007, Beale says. “The gallery has been open since February 2007 and the school [of craft and design] has been open two years,” Beale says. “We started with 10 artisans and now we have 72, so we’ve grown a lot in the last year and a half.” 18

ndy Parker worked his way through college as a singing waiter and even had a part in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas on Broadway. But these days, his starring role is public service. Parker, who came to Martinsville a decade ago, owns an executive search firm, Divergent Search, headquartered in a renovated building in Uptown Martinsville. Elected to the Henry County Board of Supervisors in 2003, Parker is seeking the 16th District seat in the Virginia House of Delegates in November 2007 on the Democratic ticket. Parker, a Texas native, says his work with the Board of Supervisors was his first foray into politics. “I wanted to do what I could to make a difference and serve the community, and help get it back on its feet again. We have a little ways to go, but we’ve made inroads. The unemployment rate is more than cut in half since I took office, although I can’t take all the credit,” Parker says. “Now I look at the opportunity to run for the House of Delegates as a chance to serve a bigger piece of the pie and really try to help the region, as opposed to just one community.” Parker says the ultimate success of the region hinges on identifying and promoting opportunities in the area by focusing on its great quality of life and natural resources. A University of Texas graduate, Parker says his brief career as a singer and actor was great fun. After college, he worked for a Dallas dinner theater, then performed in New York, Washington, D.C., and did commercial work before pursuing other career avenues. “My performing these days is confined to my political adventures,” Parker says. “That took the place of any acting I would do. enry County is going to the dogs – and cats – and that’s a good thing. With a new shelter located on seven acres, the Martinsville-Henry County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is taking good care of its fourfooted friends. “The mission of our organization is to make sure every adoptable animal in this community is able to find a loving home,” says Laura Quirk, president of the Martinsville-Henry County SPCA board of directors. “We’ve been pro-

completing a park area where adoptable dogs can play off-leash, a separate dog park for area residents to bring their pets, a quarter-mile, 10-foot-wide walking track and a picnic shelter. “We open up our facility as a venue for local events,” says Quirk, an attorney. “We have porch areas, catering facilities – we want people to come to us and use our facility as much as possible.” The center also houses a coffee shop plus a pet-themed gift shop, Beggars & Chewsers, and there is a room available at no charge for public meetings and children’s birthday parties. Some children ask guests to bring pet food or pet toys instead of birthday gifts. “It’s a terrific place, and we’ve had a multitude of volunteers,” she adds. “There’s so much community support. “We wanted it to feel like a happy, fun place not to just adopt animals, but to spend time.”

eorge and Lisa Lyle are bringing a bit of the world to Martinsville. The Lyles and their two daughters have hosted students from Japan, Romania and South Korea over the past few years, welcoming them into their home and community. And it’s been a positive experience for all concerned. “It’s been great for our girls,” says Lisa Lyle, director of admissions at Carlisle School in Martinsville. “The exchange students are excellent role models.” Daughters Hanna, 12, and Sally, 8, stay in touch with their international “sisters” via e-mail, Lyle says. Andrea Sirb, now 20, from Romania, was their first exchange student in 2004-05. Hikari Terashita, now 19, from Japan, shared their home for two years, and Yona Park, now 18, from South Korea, spent the 2006-07 school year with the Lyles. “The teenagers we’ve had in our house have been excellent students and just generally good citizens,” says George Lyle, county attorney for Henry County and chairman of the board of trustees of the Virginia Museum of Natural History. “From a community standpoint, it’s good to bring in students from other countries. These are really good kids and they’ve participated in sports at school, volunteered out in the community, and participated in theater productions.” Others have followed the Lyles’ example, including several colleagues at Carlisle School, a pre-kindergarten through 12th grade college-preparatory school and an International Baccalaureate World School. hings are looking up for the business climate in Martinsville. Entrepreneurs are adapting to a changing environment, finding new ways to invest, experiencing success and meeting the need for a more diversified economy. A business that has successfully reinvented itself is J.G. Edelen Co., formerly a supplier to the huge furniture manufacturing industry in the region. J.G. Edelen opened a warehouse here in 1997, but by 2000, it was apparent to third-generation owner Jay Edelen that furniture manufacturing was moving overseas rapidly, necessitating a change in approach. “We made the decision to try to sell cabinet hardware online, direct to consumers,” Edelen says. They developed a line of cabinet hardware suitable for kitchens and bathrooms, and with the

help of Edelen’s wife, Masha, got the Web site, www.coolknobsandpulls.com, up and running. Although launched when e-commerce still was relatively new, the venture has been so successful that by June 2007, the company was shipping about 100 orders per day, representing more than half a million pieces of hardware. “We have one foot in the past and one in the future,” Edelen says. “We’ve found a bridge to take us from the old furniture manufacturing economy into the new direct-to-consumer, e-commerce economy.” Employment at the company has grown from four to 13. Masha Edelen, meanwhile, took what she learned and developed her own company, HerDesign. Although her husband’s company remains her best customer, she and three employees have helped 39 other clients with the technology of processing orders online, as well as designing print materials. About three years ago, she moved the company from her home to the West Piedmont Business Development Center, an incubator uptown. Another couple, Joey and Kathy

Arrington, has reached further back into history to develop their new business, The Clubhouse Resort. The resort became a reality when the Arringtons took the opportunity to purchase the historic former Fieldcrest Lodge, once the private clubhouse of Marshall Field & Co., three years ago. Joey Arrington is well known in Martinsville and nationally for the race engine business he founded, Arrington Engines. “We just drove up here one day and saw it, and Joey fell in love with it,” recalls Kathy Arrington, who now manages The Clubhouse Resort. They decided that the once-exclusive and beautifully appointed lodge, built in 1917 on a secluded hilltop, should be open to the public for parties, receptions, business meetings, retreats and other events. Getting to the resort requires a long drive through the woods, but once you’ve arrived it’s clearly worth it. “The place is just special, but the people around here were never allowed to be part of it or to come up and see it,” she says. “It’s just too pretty to keep to itself. We want other people to enjoy it, too.”

Martin’s company continues to grow by branching into other areas of aquaculture. In partnership with Virginia Tech, it is developing a 30,000-square-foot shrimp research facility on the premises. Additionally, it has teamed up with MariCal Inc. to launch Virginia Cobia Farms in Saltville, which raises the saltwater native cobia in low salinity water. “This will revolutionize aquaculture as it’s known,” Martin says. The changes will also have a significant impact locally. The company currently employs 40 people at its facility, though Martin estimates total employment will exceed 1,000 when the operation is running at peak production.

AN IMPRESSIVE FISH STORY Blue Ridge Aquaculture is bringing cutting-edge technology to the fishing industry. Since opening in 1993, it has been at the forefront of indoor aquaculture, operating the largest indoor tilapia24

producing fishery in the world. The business ships more than 75,000 pounds of live tilapia annually from its 80,000square-foot facility. “Nothing touches these fish,” says company founder Bill Martin, extolling the virtues of indoor aquaculture. “You couldn’t get a safer product.”

YOU CAN BANK ON IT Imperial Savings & Loan’s origins didn’t bode well for growth. The financial institution was born in a church basement in 1929, just months before the Great Depression. But the locally owned savings and loan has not just persevered, but thrived. In January 2007, Imperial Savings & Loan moved into a new facility at the corner of Market and Bridge streets. The move doubled the bank’s space and allowed it to offer services previously unavailable at its Fayette Street home. The new building, 10 years in the making, provides drive-through and ATM services, both welcome additions to the company’s loyal customers. “We’re glad to finally be able to realize this dream for ourselves and our customers – but mostly for our customers,” says Imperial Savings & Loan President Simone Redd. The next step in the growth process will happen inside the walls. Redd says the company hopes to increase its assets base, currently estimated at $9 million, while offering additional mortgage and savings services to its clients. “We want to help them grow as we grow ourselves,” Redd says. A BITE OF THE BIG APPLE There’s a little bit of New York in southern Virginia. For 30 years, Elizabeth’s Pizza has been serving up its New York-style pizza to grateful customers in Henry County. The family business operates in two locations, with one located at MARTINSVILLE- HENRY COU NT Y

With Lester’s ownership came a new business plan: Rather than design for contractors, Lester shifted the focus to the retail market for manufactured homes, and under the new moniker American Standard Building Systems, the business is selling its products

throughout the world. The company has carved a niche as a one-stop shop for housing, providing architectural designs, mortgage assistance, manufacturing and transportation. “A lot of companies don’t offer the entire package,” says Rebecca Stout, the company’s human resources manager. “We do everything.” ASBS employs 120 people at its 146,000-square-foot manufacturing facil ity in Martinsville and has a production capacity of 2,400 housing units annually. – Dan Markham

track legislation or meet with officials, Heater adds. The chamber also focuses on providing networking opportunities within its ranks. That’s been another valuable asset for members over time, says Amanda Witt, president. “They range from a monthly business after hours (event) to a high-performance trade show,” Witt says. “Our members participate in quite a bit of networking.” The chamber also beats the drum for its members with a feature on its Web site, www.martinsville.com – the Procurement Portal, which encourages people to do business locally. Members may use the portal to post purchasing needs, which generates an e-mail that is sent to the chamber’s database of 1,800 people. Then, bids are submitted for consideration by the potential pur-

chasers, which often are city and county governments, Witt says. The chamber also administers the Leadership Development Program, a three-month class to encourage community involvement, and a supervisor training class to help managers lead their employees more effectively. In addition, after forming its Education Foundation in 2006, the chamber developed three central projects: Partnership in Excellence grants, Youth Leadership Development scholarships for high-school seniors who participate in the chamber’s eight-month Youth Leadership Development program and the New Faculty Breakfast to welcome new instructors to the area. Heater says that the chamber’s services continue to grow with its membership. “One of the things we try to do is survey the membership on a regular basis, determining what they want us to do and trying to meet their needs,” Heater says. “If we’re not meeting their needs, we have a real problem. What we provide isn’t driven by the staff or board, but by the members, and that’s how it should be.” – Joe Morris

ompetition? Not among Martinsville-Henry County’s institutions of higher learning, which are strengthening partnerships ultimately to offer a greater number of programs to students. The newest development on the academic landscape here is New College Institute (NCI), an institution created by an act of the state legislature and largely supported by a major pledge from the Harvest Foundation. New College Institute has partnered with a number of four-year colleges to offer thirdand fourth-year classes. Many of its students come from associate degree programs at Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC), which also works closely with NCI to provide classroom space and courses for several degree programs. “The New College Institute is something that’s been sorely needed in this area for a while now,” says Leanna Blevins, associate director. “It makes the last two years of a college education far more accessible to our community.” Also part of NCI’s mission is reaching out to area residents and communicating the importance of post secondary education in today’s knowledge-based economy, as well as how people can access the new educational programs being offered. In 2006, NCI had seven degree programs, four of them bachelor’s and three master’s. In the fall of 2007, NCI is offering three new bachelor’s degree programs. Two of these programs, motorsports technology and industrial technology, are in partnership with Old Dominion University, and the third program, homeland security and emergency preparedness, is offered through a partnership with Virginia Commonwealth University. NCI also collaborates on bachelor’s and master’s degree programs with Averett University, Ferrum College, Radford University, Longwood University and the University of Virginia. NCI’s new industrial technology degree will prepare students for jobs such as manufacturing supervisor, quality systems engineer and plant manager, and the motorsports technology program is a natural for Martinsville, an area known nationally for stock car racing. PHCC already operates the state’s only associate’s degree program in motorsports. “We teach everything about the race car except how to drive it,” says Kris Landrum, public relations director for PHCC. “Students build engines, do bodywork and serve as a pit crew on a race car we run at late model races.” PHCC offers not only a strong transfer program for students who want to continue their education, but also a workforce development program for business and industry. The college provides training in such subjects as computer sciences and other technical programming and customer service, among others. A third institution with a presence in Martinsville is National College, offering career-oriented two-year associate’s degree programs enabling students to pursue careers as a

new 80,000-square-foot arena and a spacious park for soccer and other outdoor sports are being designed to serve the needs of area residents while luring more visitors and events to Martinsville. The new facilities are made possible by a $20 million grant from The Harvest Foundation, established in 2002 with proceeds from the sale of the once publicly owned Memorial Hospital. “The $16 million arena will be multipurpose,” says Dennis Toney, executive director of the Southern Virginia Recreation Facilities Authority. “We can use it

for sporting events, as well as for a place to do concerts, high school graduations, conventions and conferences.” The arena is going in on a 2.5-acre city-owned lot in Uptown Martinsville at the corner of Fayette and Market streets, near the Farmers Market. Completion of the arena project has been slated tentatively for late 2009. Plans call for basketball courts, volleyball courts and an indoor soccer field alongside the multipurpose arena. The project also includes 7,500 square feet of fitness space, with a one-eighth mile elevated walking track.

“Right now we are in the planning and design phase,” Toney adds. With room for up to 4,500 permanent seats, the arena would be a natural choice for regional playoffs between basketball or volleyball teams, Toney says. “We will start with small events, but we hope to eventually host an NCAA conference championship,” he adds. Meanwhile, the soccer complex will feature five or more full-sized soccer fields on 91 acres near the intersection of U.S. Highway 58 and Irisburg Road. “It’s going to be a facility that the community can use and where we can also bring in club teams or youth leagues,” Toney says. “There will be the potential of housing lacrosse or even football if there was a need. Other outdoor events for the community could be done there, too.” Spaces for a public park and walking trails are included in the soccer complex plans, says Toney, who came to work at the Southern Virginia Recreation Facilities Authority in June 2007. The SVRFA was created by the city and county governments to oversee the facilities’ construction and administration. The initial cost estimate for the soccer complex is $4 million, with the project tentatively slated for completion by fall 2008 or spring 2009. After the arena and soccer complex are up and running, usage fees are expected to cover operating costs and perhaps even generate a profit for the community, Toney adds. Spending by athletes and fans who come into the area for events at the arena and soccer complex will be another boon for the city. “It will be a way to revive some of the activities downtown and bring people in to support community businesses, such as restaurants, shops and lodging,” Toney says. – Renee Elder MARTINSVILLE- HENRY COU NT Y

old quarters were cramped, especially considering the museum has more than 22 million items in its various collections. The new facility addresses space needs, and its many amenities make it a more prominent draw to tourists from outside the community. “We are the state’s natural history museum but also the nation’s newest natural history museum,” says Barber, noting that the institution attracts many out-of-state visitors, some of whom drive hundreds of miles just to see the new facility and its exhibits. One of the most interesting features of the new facility is the series of laboratories visible to visitors as they enter the great hall from the lobby. Guests may watch as the museum’s scientists use the labs to conduct their ongoing research into Virginia’s history. Permanent exhibits include How Nature Works: Rocks, which shows how the earth

is shaped by geological forces; and How Nature Works: Life, which demonstrates the importance of the sun to all life. The Uncovering Virginia exhibit re-creates some of the most important archaeological digs in the commonwealth. Visitors can examine fossil or archaeological evidence and use the same tools that scientists do. Special, changing exhibits offer the visitors a chance to see exciting finds from Virginia and well beyond. In June, the Beyond Jamestown: Virginia Indians Yesterday and Today exhibit opened. It highlights the history, culture and contributions of Virginia’s American Indian tribes. In fall 2007, a collection of butterflies will shimmer from cases built by the same Belgian company that constructs such cases for the Louvre Museum in Paris. Response to the museum’s new home has been overwhelming, Barber says. In April, the first full month it was open to the public, 6,000 people came through the doors. At the old facility, 25,000 people would visit in an entire year. The museum expects 70,000 total visitors the first year and eventually aims to attract as many as 140,000 visitors annually. – Piper Reilly

everal years of anticipation culminated in late March 2007, when the glistening glass doors of the Virginia Museum of Natural History’s new home on Starling Avenue swung open to the public. “This museum would be impressive to be in any city in the United States,” says Ryan Barber, the museum’s director of marketing and external affairs, “but to be in Martinsville, with a population of 15,000, it’s even more amazing.” At last, the museum has a fitting facility to showcase its spectacular collections and adequately convey the important work being done by its curators. This new, $28 million, 89,000square-foot facility replaced the museum’s previous home, a 1920s schoolhouse. The museum was founded as a private institution in 1984, and since it became a state agency in 1988, it has been a hub of world-class research. Its

Experiencing Healthy Growth MEMORIAL HOSPITAL EXPANDS FACILITY AND STAFF TO MEET CHANGING NEEDS

ith an expanded ambulatory surgery center and an ongoing drive to recruit new physicians, Memorial Hospital is working to ensure residents’ good health now and well into the future. Visitors to the hospital certainly will notice one physical expansion – a $5.8 million project that opened in early 2007 and doubled the ambulatory surgery center’s size to 22,888 square feet. The overhaul added two operating suites, a recovery room, two endoscopy suites and 20 holding bays. This gives the area eight surgical suites – one of which specifically is for orthopedics – and four endoscopy suites. In addition, the hospital is adding an additional cardiac catheter lab, doubling its capacity for that growing service, and also has added a second MRI machine, says Darren Aaron, director of physician services. “We’ve been building onto our cath labs and have added a 64-slice CT scanner as well,” Aaron says. “Cardiology has been a direction that we’ve definitely seen a need to grow in. A lot of our patients have diabetes and heart problems such as hypertension and congestive heart failure, so we needed to expand those services.” Altogether, $40 million in physical improvements and equipment upgrades have been made to the hospital since Providence Healthcare purchased it in 2002. Providence was then acquired by LifePoint, which now operates the facility. Major items included the new CT scanner, which cost $1.8 million, and a picture archiving and communications system that allows surgeons to project X-rays, CT scans and other

images on monitors and a plasma screen in the new orthopedics surgery suite. The enhancements were necessary to bring Memorial, built in 1968, up to speed, Aaron says, as well as to improve the hospital’s ability to recruit new physicians to the area. “We’ve been working to find the right physicians to bring here, and in many ways have been building our new services around those doctors,” he says. “We work with primary-care doctors in the area who feed referrals to us, and so we’ve been getting together with them monthly to talk about not only what we’re doing, but also what’s needed and what they would like to see us do. We’re not adding new equipment and services just to put a notch on our belt, but to improve outcomes for patients.” The hospital helped bring 15 new physicians into the Henry County region in 2006. Once the new doctors arrive, Aaron and other staff members work with them to make sure they know what services are available at Memorial so they can build their practices. “So many patients in this area were having to go to Winston-Salem or Duke University to get a lot of services, and we wanted to be able to offer them the convenience of coming here,” he says. “We’re working with these new doctors to build their practices and refer people over to us, so we’re making sure Memorial is living up to its end of the deal.
