Welcome to Kershaw County An introduction to the area’s people, places and events

Strike a Chord Sounds great: The Carolina Downhome Blues Festival celebrates its 14th anniversary in early October 2010. The annual three-day weekend in Camden features 30 blues acts performing at 15 different sites throughout the community. The types of blues performed includes classic soul, horn-driven funk, blues rock and acoustic blues, and audiences can experience acts close up on several stages. Aside from the blues festival, visitors can also enjoy antique shops in Camden along with good restaurants, historic homes, the Camden Revolutionary War Site and equestrian activities. Festival prices are $10 on Thursday, $15 Friday and $15 Saturday, or $35 for a weekend pass.

Good Baked Goods Good things come in small packages. Just ask the staff at Mulberry Market Bake Shop. The tiny business on East Dekalb Street in Camden is a local favorite for customers who enjoy baked treats, and the shop also specializes in gift baskets and gift items. Mulberry Market has also built up a great reputation for wedding cakes. But its small and delicious pastries are the main reason why the business has such a large following. Among its product lineup are almond Danish pastries, tangy lemon bars, macaroons and divine cheese sticks made with European butter.

Art and Soul The Artists’ Attic in Camden houses nine artists under one roof, and the interesting cooperative even welcomes visitors who want a glimpse of the creative process. The studio is on South Broad Street. The artists work in a variety of mediums, and classes can be scheduled for children and adults. Camden is also home to a couple of other art centers. Dovetails features custom bench-crafted furniture made to a client’s specifications from woods that include pine, walnut, cypress, maple and cherry. Rutledge Street Gallery offers a variety of original works from regional and national artists. Many art specialties are represented, including Chinese antique furniture.

Fun Things To Do in Kershaw County n Catch the action at the Carolina Cup or Colonial Cup, Kershaw County’s famed steeplechase events. n Drop a line at Lake Wateree, a prime spot for fishing and boating. n Swing by South Carolina Equine Park’s 40 acres of land designed for all kinds of horse competitions and spectator sports. n Brush up on your history with a driving, walking, or carriage tour through Camden Historic District, comprised of more than 60 preserved homes and buildings. n Embrace your inner artist at the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County, offering everything from theater performances to an art gallery and arts education building. n Play a round or two at the Camden Country Club, an 18-hole championship golf course.

Strut Like Chickens The Bethune Chicken Strut is an annual festival in early May that includes rides, vendors, street dances, live music and equine events. Other attractions are a parade, championship rodeo, truck and tractor pull and a baseball tournament. Most activities are held on the grounds of Bethune Elementary School. One major highlight of the festival is the Colgate Country Showdown. It is a regional singing competition with the winner advancing to Atlanta and then to Nashville for a $100,000 recording contract. Martina McBride is a past national winner, and so is LeAnn Rimes.

Gaining Seniority Camden is home to two excellent assisted living facilities for seniors. Morningside Assisted Living and Springdale Health Center offer a variety of health-care and senior living services. Morningside residents typically don’t need skilled nursing care but may need assistance with some aspects of daily life. They live in their own private apartment in the community but have the support and services they need while continuing to be as independent and active as possible. At Springdale Health Care Center, extended-stay nursing care is provided to seniors with varying degrees of disabilities.

Clean Sweep Susan Simpson would have thrived in early America. Simpson is owner of The Broom Place, where she still uses antique machinery to make brooms just as they were made in previous centuries. Her business is located in the historic Boykin district, in a restored settler’s home that was constructed around 1740. She dyes her broom straw in bright colors of red, blue, green and yellow, then cuts and soaks the straw so that it becomes flexible. It can then be wrapped in layers around custom-carved wooden handles and then sewn securely.

orsing around takes on a whole new meaning in Kershaw County. Long recognized as one of the nation’s most elite equestrian communities, Camden, S.C., boasts a thriving equine industry built on more than 200 years of American tradition. Each year, more than 50,000 cheering spectators turn out for the Carolina Cup series at Camden’s historic Springdale Race Course. Established in 1930, the springtime Carolina Cup, together with November’s Colonial Cup, comprise the premier sporting events in South Carolina. Operated by the Carolina Cup Racing Association, the races exist to raise

money for charity. The course also includes a year-round, 600-acre thoroughbred racehorse training center. Visitors to the Springdale Race Course also can pay homage to America’s equestrian roots at the National Steeplechase Museum – the only museum dedicated to the horses, trainers, owners and riders of American Steeplechasing. The sport, which came to America in the 1800s, was named for early competitions in which races began at one church steeple and ended at

another, with riders facing a rugged, obstacle-filled country terrain. In Camden, the museum serves to preserve documents, photographs, trophies, memorabilia, interactive exhibits and film tracing the sport’s roots to the 18th century. “Camden and Kershaw County have been known as an equine destination since the last century,” says Hope Cooper, executive director of the National Steeplechase Museum. “In its days as a resort destination, visitors flocked

in for the winter to play polo, fox hunt, and show and train race horses.” In 2009, equestrian aficionados welcomed the opening of the South Carolina Equine Park. Located just off I-20 in Camden, the county-owned park offers riders and trainers more than 40 acres of show rings, cattle- and warm-up areas, refurbished stalls, a vendor area, restaurant, courtyard and RV sites. Much more than a recreation facility, the park is expected to generate up to $22 million annually in direct and

indirect spending and encourage additional economic development. In historic downtown Camden, the Camden Polo Field provides yet another reminder of Kershaw County’s rich equestrian past. Recognized as the second oldest polo field in America, the 1898 site once drew large crowds of winter tourists from throughout the world. Today, the field is home to the annual Camden Cup Polo Weekend. Every May, eager onlookers once again gather as regional teams

compete for the Camden Cup Trophy. With a world-class reputation at stake, it’s no surprise that Kershaw County also offers the best equine care. Horses have access to the latest in injury rehabilitation, post-surgical care and accelerated conditioning services at the Equine Rehabilitation & Conditioning Center at Roger Young Stables. State-of-the-art therapy equipment includes an AquaPacer Underwater Treadmill as well as acupuncture, chiropractic and

shockwave therapies and laser, ultrasound and magnetic therapies. An exercise walker, spacious stalls, riding arena and separate treatment areas help ensure optimal recovery. From polo fields to racetracks, Kershaw County truly is an equestrian destination, and you can bet that folks here wouldn’t have it any other way. “Our equestrian heritage contributes to the unique lifestyle of the area, setting it apart from many other small historic towns,” Cooper says.

History Revisiting America’s memorable past in historic Kershaw County

U

nforgettable tales of patriotism, rebellion and courage are planted in the pages of American history, and nowhere do the nation’s roots run deeper than in Kershaw County, S.C. “Kershaw County is known for its history, and people come from all over the world to experience it firsthand,” says Joanna Craig, executive director of the Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site. “When you look at the major players in early American history, from Hernando de Soto and Lord Charles Cornwallis to George Washington and Nathanael Greene, nearly all came through this town.” Open seven days a week, the Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site takes more than 20,000 visitors each year back to Aug. 16, 1780, when British soldiers overtook South Carolina’s oldest inland town in the Battle of Camden. Known as the worst American battle defeat of the Revolutionary War, the monumental event shaped the county – and country – for centuries to come. Guided and self-guided tours of the 107-acre outdoor museum complex provide a glimpse into Camden’s earliest history with a focus on the Colonial and Revolutionary eras. An 18th century Camden town site includes the reconstructed and furnished mansion of county namesake Joseph Kershaw and the restored, furnished 1785 John Craven House, among Murals line the foyer in the historic Robert Mills Courthouse, home to the Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center.

The Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site takes more than 20,000 visitors each year back to Aug. 16, 1780 … others. Reconstructed military fortifications, 19th century log cabins with exhibits, and the headquarters of Lord Charles Cornwallis also grace the property along with a blacksmith exhibit, Quaker cemetery and a 0.6-mile nature trail. An affiliate of the National Park Service, the Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site also is home to the annual Revolutionary War Field Days that draw hundreds to its battlefield re-enactments, 18th century craftsmen demonstrations, kids activities and more. Experienced and amateur genealogists alike can delve into local and family history at the Camden Archives and Museum, recognized throughout the Southeast as one of the best research libraries for genealogical research. Books, microfilm, maps, files, periodicals and general reference materials are available along with photographs and other artifacts linking the county’s past and present. The museum also is home to The South Carolina Daughters of the American Revolution Library and the South Carolina Society Colonial Dames XVII Century Library.

At Camden’s Bonds Conway House, built by the county’s first African American to purchase his own freedom, the Kershaw County Historical Society provides education through community events, historic markers and 30-plus regional publications. In an effort to preserve the region’s colorful past for future generations, the 500-member society also has partnered with the University of South Carolina Press to publish a complete history of Kershaw County, starting with its earliest American Indian ancestors. The book will be available to the public in late 2010. Even more American history awaits visitors just south of Camden, where guests to Historic Boykin Mill Farms explore the last Civil War battle site in South Carolina. A working broom shop, upscale restaurant and 200-year old functional gristmill grace Boykin’s 400-plus scenic acres, where the last federal officer was killed in the Civil War. The site also includes a monument to the historic 1865 Battle of Boykin. “It really is a wonderful and rich history in Kershaw County,” Craig says.

Below from left: A marker in Boykin honors Burwell Boykin, who fought during the Civil War; the Kershaw-Cornwallis House at the Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site is a reconstruction of the home of Joseph Kershaw.

entral Carolina Technical College is leading the way in education in Kershaw County. In 2010, the college celebrated the opening of its seventh regional campus, located in Camden, S.C. The 15,000-square-foot facility will more than double capacity for CCTC’s quickly growing student population. “We have operated a campus in Camden since 2001, but that campus was completely utilized very quickly,” says Neal Crotts, director of public relations at CCTC. “With the new campus, students from Kershaw County will be able to complete more of their coursework closer to home and the overall number of students in these gateway courses can be expanded.” While Camden’s original Little Street location housed 450 students per semester, Crotts anticipates the new campus will accommodate up to 1,000 students over the next several years. Located at 80 Campus Drive near the intersection of I-20 and Highway 521, the spacious campus also will provide science labs and industrial training space previously unavailable. Welding labs, general education classrooms and a computer lab also are on site. The campus is a welcome addition both in the community and at the college, which experienced a 29 percent growth in the 2009-2010 school year alone. With a total enrollment of 4,200 students, CCTC is the fastest growing two-year college in South Carolina. Crotts cites CCTC’s flexibility and myriad of degree programs for the

school’s continued success. “There is a growing number of students taking advantage of our university transfer programs which allow them to complete up to two years of a bachelor’s degree closer to home and at a significantly lower tuition,” Crotts says. While students take advantage of CCTC’s flexible educational programs, business owners appreciate the school’s commitment to employee education through a heavily involved and expanding workforce training program. With the Kershaw County Economic Development offices on site, the new campus helps meets the college’s charge to provide workforce development educational opportunities to Kershaw County. “Having the offices on site will be a great advantage to economic developers when recruiting new business and industry, because they

will literally be able to walk across the hall and show the industrial training space where their new workers will be trained,” Crotts says. “The availability of an educated and trained workforce is always a primary concern of new business and industry, and this campus is a very real symbol of the close working relationship we have with the county’s economic development arm.” Through a partnership with the Kershaw County School District, CCTC also offers dual-enrollment courses, allowing high school students to earn college credit prior to graduation. As for the original Little Street location, the campus likely will remain open. “The new building is just phase one of a much larger and long-term project,” Crotts says. “Our planning studies have told us we will likely need up to 60,000 square feet at the new location to meet the needs of Kershaw County.”

in 1910. Fast-forward 100 years and the 500-member chamber is kicking off its centennial celebration with a thoroughly modern update to its website, www.kershawcountychamber.org. “Our goal in creating the new site was to make it more user friendly with less than three clicks to obtain the

information a visitor to the site is looking for,” says Liz Horton, executive director of the Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center. Unlike the previous website, geared primarily toward tourism, the new site provides equal focus on chamber news and happenings, regional tourism and relocation information. The site also includes a “hot deals” section for online coupons and member-to-member

savings, job links, member news, member milestones, business resources/ tutorials and an event calendar accessible to chamber members. According to Horton, more than 600 visitors accessed the calendar in less than two weeks following the site’s December 2009 launch. “We have received nothing but positive feedback from our members and members of the community,” Horton says, as she continually tracks visitors to the site, the length of time a site visitor remains on the site, pages most often viewed and referring sites. Future plans for the chamber’s site include a marketing package to allow for the sale of banner advertising, and to let members upgrade to an e-commerce level of membership to add logos and photos to their landing page in the online business directory. Horton hopes the new site will provide newcomers and tourists alike with a comprehensive glimpse into all Kershaw County has to offer. Surrounded by interstates 95, 20 and 77 with quick access to nearby Columbia, the state’s oldest inland city seamlessly blends modern amenities with a rich heritage and small-town feel. A multimillion-dollar tourism industry, award winning public schools, an active recreation department and a plethora of arts and culture activities also are bringing attention to the Steeplechase Capital of the World. “Thanks to our neighbor to the west, we are becoming the hometown of choice for new businesses and growing families,” Horton says. – Melanie Hill

Local Flavor

Farms, Farmers Markets Keep Fresh Food on Tables Kershaw County residents like good food, and they like it fresh. And for those who call the area home or anyone lucky enough to visit, there are bountiful opportunities to buy and enjoy locally produced food.

Like many progressive areas of the country, Kershaw County embraces the farm-to-table movement, a push by consumers to buy food directly from local farmers, thereby reducing ”food miles” on products and supporting local agriculture at the same time. Oh, and it also happens that fresh food tastes better. In fact, Kershaw County restaurants such as the Mill Pond Steakhouse, located in Rembert, go out of their way to use fresh, local ingredients. For the Mill Pond’s Fried Green Tomato Napoleon, a popular appetizer, chefs seek out local tomatoes, which are fried and then layered with cheese and lump crab meat. Along the same lines, several Kershaw County restaurants participate in South Carolina’s ”Fresh on the Menu” program. Launched in 2008 and part of the ”Certified SC” initiative, Fresh on the Menu encourages local chefs to ensure that at least 25 percent of their menus include South Carolina-grown foods. Restaurants involved in this initiative include the world-class Indigo Jones Restaurant and Old Armory Steak House, both in downtown Camden. Also on the list of restaurants seeking to utilize local ingredients and support local farmers at the same time are Springdale Hall Country Club, in Camden, and Woodcreek Farms in Elgin. In addition, Kershaw County makes it easy for chefs and families alike to shop for the freshest

local food available at the weekly Kershaw County Farmers Market. Held every Saturday morning from the second Saturday in April through the second Saturday in December, the farmers market is located behind First Community Bank in Camden. The market aims to provide consumers with farm-fresh foods while carving out a sustainable agriculture niche for today’s farmers. Vendors on a typical Saturday offer a variety of items, including fresh produce, honey, rice and other grains, eggs, all-natural skin care products, grass-fed beef, free-range poultry, baked goods, milk and even textiles, like felted wool. Learn more about the farmers market and its vendors at www.kcfarmersmarket.org. To get even closer to your food, visit HoField Farms, where customers may enjoy a “pick-your-own” experience. Products at the farm include strawberries, peaches and more. The farm is located in Camden. Food is also the main attraction at area celebrations. Kershaw County’s appreciation for history and tradition melds into the countryside, where Revolutionary War battlefields are maintained alongside the Camden Polo Field, the second-oldest active polo field in the United States. In fact, equine activities have played a leading role in Kershaw County’s culture for generations. Called the ”Steeplechase Capital of the World,” Kershaw County hosts two large steeplechases every year. Carolina Cup kicks off the spring season. An estimated 50,000 fans crowd into the Springdale Race Course, making this rite of spring the largest steeplechase race meeting in North America. The Colonial Cup, held in the fall, is the last big equine event of the year, although Springdale Race Course operates all year.

Kershaw County also is home to year-round music and theater events, with the Carolina Downhome Blues Festival, held in the fall, offering three days of up-close-and-personal performances. The event is sponsored by the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County, where the mission is to “provide a stage, literally and figuratively, for the talents of all residents of Kershaw County.“ This goal is accomplished by events, exhibits and classes designed to meet all tastes and budgets. Theater performances include adults and children, and music events vary throughout the year to include chamber music, symphony, blues, jazz and gospel. Classes include dance, drama, music lessons, visual arts and even summer camps for kids. Columbia, the state capital and only 30 minutes away, is home to the South Carolina Philharmonic, the Koger Center for the Arts and the University of South Carolina. – Laura Kimball

Health & Wellness

KershawHealth Marks Nearly a Century of Growth When Camden Hospital was started by private citizens in 1913, the organization’s leaders probably had no idea how their investment would grow. What started as a small hospital and nursing school in the heart of Kershaw County is now a regional health care operation that offers everything from diagnostic screening to long-term care.

T

he nonprofit KershawHealth, which has experienced nearly a century of growth, now boasts a 121-bed acute-care facility, an 88-bed long-term facility, Health Resource Center and home health/hospice services. KershawHealth staffs several locations in order to meet the needs of the entire county. Facility locations include Camden, Bethune, Elgin and Lugoff. While the Medical Center at Camden provides immediate care, such as labor-and-delivery or emergency services, other locations also have practitioners to care for urgent needs, pediatrics, physical

therapy, and even diagnostic and outpatient services. For example, the newly completed Elgin Outpatient and Urgent Care Center is located in the Wateree Executive Park on Interstate 20. This 42,000-squarefoot center offers urgent care in about an hour, giving citizens a unique option for their health-care needs. The center also offers imaging services including CT scan, open MRI, digital mammography, X-ray, ultrasound and bonedensity scans. Cardiology services also are provided, including nuclear medicine,

stress testing and ultrasound. In addition, KershawHealth recently completed a $15 million expansion that enhances its intensive care unit, surgical services, cardiovascular diagnostic capabilities, cardiac rehabilitation, and health information management. The citizens of Kershaw County benefit from state-of-the-art health care provided by their friends and neighbors. Still owned and operated by the county, the nonprofit KershawHealth remains a locally controlled product of its citizens. – Laura Kimball

Education

Local Schools Embrace Technology and Tradition Kershaw County schools have fully embraced technology and innovation while still treasuring their traditions. School options include a public school system, a well-known military academy for boys and several private schools.

I

n the Kershaw County School District, wireless, high-speed networks connect all 20 schools. The district also was the first in South Carolina to provide individual laptops to all high school students and teachers, a program that started in 2005. In addition to the laptop program, called i-CAN, the district is completing a plan that will provide children with equal learning opportunities and facilities throughout the county. A school construction program, budgeted at $102.2 million, includes two middle schools, new athletic facilities at all three high schools, a new elementary school and two elementary school renovation projects. While these improvements prepare students for the future, KCSD is also proud of its present accomplishments. The district’s 2009 Palmetto Assessment of State Standards, or PASS, scores were equal to or better than state averages in 19 of 24 categories, according to the South Carolina Department of Education.

Also, the district’s commitment to technology is underlined by the school superintendent’s use of it. Dr. Frank Morgan publishes a daily blog, KCSDblog, with content including school system updates and business, as well as personal pats on the back for students and teachers. In addition to Kershaw County’s public education opportunities, area private schools also offer quality options. The Camden Military Academy, a tradition dating to 1892, is a private boarding school for boys with a statewide reputation as the official military school of South Carolina. Other private school options include a Montessori school, parochial schools and several private schools in nearby Columbia, the state capital. Also in Columbia, about 30 miles away, is the main campus of the University of South Carolina. This provides area residents with higher education opportunities, including many advanced degrees. – Laura Kimball

Unless you prefer simply relaxing and listening to the sounds of nature – and there’s nothing wrong with that in this neck of the woods – then there’s no excuse for sitting still in Kershaw County. There’s a lot to do here, from horseback riding, fishing and golfing to team athletics and shooting sports.

Lake Wateree, one of the state’s oldest manmade lakes, is a huge draw for fishers and boaters. With more than 13,000 surface acres and 242 miles of shoreline, the lake offers bountiful crappie, bass, catfish and bream. Lake Wateree State Park features a lakeside campground, nature trail, picnic area, playground, tackle shop/store and a boat ramp. The Wateree River, Goodale State Park and Kendall Lake are nearby.

The Kershaw County Recreation Department alone offers superior facilities and programs, including 34 tennis courts, 31 baseball fields, nine soccer fields, four volleyball courts and a “star-struck” observatory for astronomers. Programs open to the public include dance classes – including South Carolina’s state dance, the shag – gymnastics, tennis lessons, martial arts, swimming, playgrounds and more.

It’s no surprise that equine activities also play a big role in area recreation. In addition to the annual polo events and cup races, horse enthusiasts may take advantage of year-round activities at the South Carolina Equine Park, a 40-acre center that has been specifically designed for a full range of activities. The SCEP is accessible by several nearby interstates, including I-20, I-95, I-26 and I-77.

Community-Centered Care KershawHealth pledges quality, personalized services for residents.

S

taying connected and responsive to the people of Kershaw County and surrounding communities has been at the heart of KershawHealth’s mission since its inception in 1913. It was then that a group of local citizens recognized the need for convenient, quality care and answered by founding a not-forprofit hospital in Camden. Nearly 100 years later, this comprehensive healthcare system is steadfast in its pledge to improve the health and well-being of area residents by consistently delivering quality, costeffective, personalized healthcare. “We are the only healthcare system in our county, so we strive to make a positive difference in the lives of all citizens,” says Donnie Weeks, Presdient/Chief Executive Officer. “To do that, we must have the physicians who make our mission possible, as well as the technology, equipment and facilities necessary to provide that care. Everything we do is centered on that mission.” The medical center in Camden is at the hub of a growing system that provides a broad range of medical, diagnostic, rehabilitation, home care

and wellness services at locations across the Kershaw County area. The newest addition is the Elgin Outpatient Center, which joins facilities in Lugoff, Bethune and Kershaw. The Elgin facility is home to Urgent Care at Elgin, as well as physician offices, outpatient laboratory, imaging and cardiology. Even with the technologicallyadvanced facilities in place today, KershawHealth is proactive in its long-term plans for development. “We have a strategic plan, and that has been critical to helping us meet the challenges in healthcare today. Out of that came the decision to build our Elgin outpatient diagnostic and urgent care center,” Weeks says. “We also have purchased property in Camden where we will create an outpatient facility – including urgent care, oncology, physical therapy, imaging and laboratory services – in the near future. Strategic growth is critical to our ability to remain financially sound and to fulfill our mission.” Weeks attributes much of KershawHealth’s evolution to wise guidance provided by the healthcare system’s local board of trustees. “We are a mid-sized system, and

being locally controlled has been very good for our community,” Weeks says. “It’s a partnership that has proven to be the best model for us to deliver healthcare.” For KershawHealth, every day is about striving to be the best community healthcare system in South Carolina. It’s about helping everyone reach their individual potential for wellness.

Picture of Health KershawHealth provides comprehensive diagnostic services – from imaging to sleep studies.

K

ershawHealth ensures that residents can rest easy knowing the big picture of their well-being – literally. The health system offers a comprehensive selection of diagnostic services ranging from cardiovascular testing, imaging and laboratory services to sleep disorder diagnostics and treatment. “In the past year, we’ve replaced much of our equipment to offer state-of-the-art digital imaging,” says Dave Baker, director of radiology. “It’s a $2 million upgrade, and it has made everything much better for our patients as well as our technologists, who can now work much faster and with better results.” Digital imaging services include digital X-ray and mammography, as well as a full range of other imaging services – open and closed MRI, nuclear medicine, bone densitometry, ultrasound and cutting-edge 16- and 64-slice CT scanning. With these advanced tools, KershawHealth’s specialists can identify the smallest issue before it becomes a problem. Patients have convenient access to imaging services at the Medical Center in Camden, the Outpatient Center in Elgin

and the West Wateree Medical Complex in Lugoff. In addition, the upgrade includes a PACS network, which archives all images so they can be viewed either on site or at remote locations, says Frank Morrison, PACS coordinator. “This not only saves us from dealing with chemicals and films but also speeds up the process and reduces the radiation exposure to the patients and to the technologists,” Morrison says. Because heart disease is the leading cause of death in South Carolina, KershawHealth offers a wide array of cardiovascular tests. These include echocardiograms, EKGs, stress testing, upper and lower extremity arterial studies, vein mapping, arteriograms, Holter monitors and more. All backed up by the expertise of highly qualified cardiologists, vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists, nurses and technicians. Accredited by the College of American Pathologists, the clinical laboratories of KershawHealth offer comprehensive services to assist physicians in diagnosing disease, monitoring health and evaluating therapy. Services are available at the

Medical Center, the West Wateree Medical Complex and the Outpatient Center in Elgin. “Every day, laboratory results contribute a significant percentage of the information needed for precise diagnosis and personalized treatment. An accurate diagnosis begins the journey back to wellness for patients. Using state-of-theart technology and instrumentation, our laboratory professionals perform and supervise tests that not only search for potential health problems in the hopes of identifying the disease early, when it is most treatable, but also guide and assess the ongoing care of patients,” says laboratory director Jane Atkins. Those who are having trouble getting adequate rest can find treatment and relief at KershawHealth’s accredited Sleep Diagnostics Center, where registered technologists help identify and treat sleep disorders. The center offers a relaxing, homelike environment for patients, says Alyson McGugan, the center’s manager. “We have four private bedrooms where we diagnose and treat all types of sleep disorders in a way that makes the patients very comfortable,” McGugan says. “People just love it here.”

Full Recovery, Close to Home Patients enjoy access to effective, convenient rehabilitation programs.

A

t KershawHealth, patient care extends well beyond the time of surgery or a hospital stay with a variety of highly effective rehabilitation programs. The programs are tailored to the individual needs of the patient and designed to address any specific physical or mental challenges that may result from cardiac surgery, serious injuries, strokes or other issues. The programs can include medical monitoring, exercise and diet programs, stress management and more. For example, KershawHealth offers the RACE short-term inpatient physical rehabilitation program. RACE helps people who don’t need to be hospitalized but who do need more than regular home health services as they recover, most often after total joint replacement surgery. RACE has proven so popular that it has grown from being an eight-bed program in 2007 to 20 beds today, says Timothy Hornsby, RACE program director. “We offer rehabilitation that a lot of people need, and we accept patients from all area hospitals. Of course, if you were at KershawHealth Medical Center for care, you transfer right from the hospital to us,” Hornsby says. “So not only are you able to stay in town, but there’s no need to move to another facility to continue your treatment.” The RACE unit is more homelike than the Medical Center, with common areas, a garden, beauty salon and many social activities. This type of environment adds another level of support and encouragement, Hornsby says, as it allows patients to get to know one another. Naturally, many people prefer the program because it allows them to stay close to home. The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, on the other hand, has two phases that begin just after surgery or treatment and continue for several months as recovery progresses. The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program, a new service, works in much the same way, says Danny Wharton, director of cardiopulmonary services. “Our patients have about 36 sessions over three months, and we see about 300 patients annually,” Wharton says. “We begin working with them at their baseline condition and develop a program to help them improve from there.” Both programs are conveniently located at the Medical Center and use the spacious, specially designed rehab gym there. “When you’re still ill and have a program that lets you regain your functions right here in town without having to travel, it’s a big help,” he says. “By the time people finish our programs, they’re able to function at a better cardiac or cardiopulmonary level, and they’ve been able to have family and friends support them because they’ve been right here the whole time.” Special Advertising Section

Precision Procedures High-quality options make surgery convenient.

R

esidents in need of a wide variety of surgery enjoy the convenience of having that expertise close to home, thanks to KershawHealth’s array of state-of-the-art, minimally invasive surgical services. Procedures range from laser procedures for eye, ear, nose and throat problems to arthroscopy for shoulder, knee and ankle joints. Total hip, knee and ankle replacement is available, along with laparoscopy for gallbladder removal, appendectomies, urological conditions and ob-gyn procedures. An expanded service for KershawHealth – lithotripsy – uses shock waves to pulverize kidney stones. In addition, KershawHealth doctors routinely perform vascular surgeries, including carotid endarterectomies, aortic aneurysm repair and lower-extremity grafts. People in the community benefit greatly from having such high-quality, diverse options available locally and on an inpatient or outpatient basis, says Kathy Layden-Morris, director of surgical services. “If you can have something done right in your own town, it’s so much more convenient,” she says. “We are doing things here that aren’t being done anywhere else, too; we did the state’s first total ankle-replacement surgery.”

About 450 procedures are performed here monthly, a number that continues to climb as word spreads about the many services available and the high level of care patients receive, Layden-Morris says. “We have great surgeons and a top-notch facility,” she says. “Why would you go anywhere else when you have all this right here?”

ER Alternative Urgent Care at Elgin treats minor emergencies

A

lways responsive to the needs of the community, KershawHealth has provided another option to keep its residents well. To meet urgent medical needs that aren’t emergency room situations, there’s the new Urgent Care at Elgin. The center is open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends. It is staffed at all times by a physician with experience in urgent care or emergency room medicine, notes Dr. Shelley Janssen, medical director. Equipped with the latest diagnostic equipment, the center is a convenient option for busy people and families who are on the go, says Mike Bunch, Vice President/Chief Operating Officer. “Our purpose was to provide services during the evening and on weekends,” Bunch says. “Now the entire county has access to a level of care that’s appropriate when a life-threatening emergency’s not at hand, but the situation requires quick attention and medical care that shouldn’t be delayed.” The center has seen a steady stream of visitors since opening in October 2009. “From a service perspective, it’s a model for outpatient care,” Bunch says. “It allows us to direct people to a convenient, accessible facility and has given us a way to provide quick, quality care without people having to come to the Medical Center.” www.kershawhealth.org

Powerful Partnerships Professional affiliations create access to specialists and advanced technologies.

I

n a state with many advanced medical options, the strategic partnerships KershawHealth has formed allow us to tap into expertise and technology that would otherwise be unavailable within a community healthcare system. Those alliances mean many things to the people of Kershaw County. It might be a specialist in Charleston guiding an ER physician in Camden through the latest in stroke interventions. Or the expertise of a team of pathologists trained to detect the smallest abnormalities, which can lead to earlier diagnosis and treatment. These professionals are not based here, but as part of the KershawHealth system, their expertise is vital to serving the health and wellness needs of local residents, says Donnie Weeks, President/Chief Executive Officer. “We offer the majority of services needed in our

community, but there are some that we could never have due to the expense,” Weeks says. “One way to have those is to team up with other doctors and practices and have them on an ‘on-call’ basis.” Examples of these partnerships include affiliations with the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia. The stroke-intervention program with MUSC allows a Charleston-based neurologist to view digital images of a patient and then recommend interventional treatments to physicians in the ER. Pulmonologists from USC provide consultations for hospitalized patients and follow-up care for chronic illnesses like COPD. Women in particular benefit from an affiliation with Pitts Radiology in Columbia, which boasts a specialist in women’s imaging, Weeks says. “They have a trained eye for looking at specific things, and they might pick up a really small lesion that might be missed by someone who doesn’t have that specialized training,” Weeks says. Other key services are provided by Professional Pathology Services in Columbia, which aids KershawHealth’s expanding roster of surgery options, and South Carolina Oncology Associates, which brings oncologists to the medical center’s oncology department, allowing patients to stay in the community for their treatment. “Between the oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and pulmonologists, we have some really strong partnerships out there,” says Mike Bunch, Vice President/ Chief Operating Officer. “We bring in people that we couldn’t support on our budget but also maintain local control of these and all our other services. That’s of benefit to KershawHealth and also to our community.” Many of these partnerships would have been impossible without the foresight KershawHealth has shown in investing in technology like digital imaging and advanced computer systems. These have provided a framework for the development of a system of care far more extensive than many community healthcare systems can offer.
