Welcome to Martinsville-Henry County An introduction to the area’s people, places and events
Fairy Tales Come True
Please Be Seated An enormous chair that traveled all around the U.S. from 20022009 is now on permanent display in Uptown Martinsville. The chair was built in 2002 to mark the 100th anniversary of local manufacturer Bassett Furniture Industries, and later was used to open Bassett Furniture stores across the U.S. Located just off Church Street, it weighs 6,000 pounds, towers 20 feet tall and spans more than 8 feet across. During the piece’s ribbon-cutting in 2009, Bassett Furniture President and CEO Rob Spilman said it is fitting that the chair’s “final resting place is right here in the seat of the furniture industry.”
Visitors to Fairy Stone State Park are often brought to tears. Tiny rocks called fairy stones, also known as fairy tears, can be dug at Fairy Mountain near the entrance to the park. Fairy stones are cross-shaped iron aluminum silicate crystals formed millions of years ago. They exist in four different and distinct shapes, including the St. Andrew’s cross, a Maltese cross, a Roman cross and a single crystal. The stones have no monetary value but thousands of people hunt for them each year at the park – one of the few places in the world where they can be found.
The Rives is Rockin’ The historic Rives Theatre in Uptown Martinsville isn’t a movie theater anymore. But the cinema’s loss is the community’s gain, as the 250-seat venue now hosts everything from stand-up comedy to rock, bluegrass and country music concerts. The diverse lineup is thanks to Friends of the Rives, a non-profit group devoted to keeping the Rives open and hopping with music, private parties and other performances. Appalachian roots band Folk Soul Revival sold out its show at the Rives, and other concerts like country singer Clinton Gregory and bluegrass band Larry Keel and Natural Bridge have been popular as well.

Fast Facts
Small But Speedy Good things come in small packages, as evidenced by Martinsville Speedway. The .526-mile oval, affectionately known as The Paper Clip for its long straightaways and tight corners, is the smallest racetrack on the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit. H. Clay Earles built the speedway in 1947 as a dirt track and it hosted the sixth race in NASCAR history. Today, the speedway known for bumping and paint-scraping action stages two annual NASCAR Sprint Cup series events, each of which pours an estimated $170 million into the local economy. The track, which has a seating capacity of 62,000, is owned by International Speedway Corp.
n During each school year, the MartinsvilleHenry County After 3 Initiative provides area children with educational programming five days a week. n The Reynolds Homestead in Critz showcases how Hardin Reynolds and his family lived. He was a 19th-century farmer, merchant, baker and tobacco manufacturer. n Martinsville-Henry County’s Blue Ridge Aquaculture is the world’s largest indoor producer of tilapia. n Martinsville was once known as the “Sweatshirt Capital of the World” because of the growth of the textiles industry in the area.
A Site To See Uptown Martinsville is a central business district, and also a designated historic district. The Martinsville Uptown Revitalization Association has taken several measures in recent years to preserve the district’s historic buildings, many of which were built around 1900. And because of the district’s designated historic status, building owners can qualify for tax credits when making improvements. Uptown Martinsville is also affiliated with the national Main Street program as well as the Virginia Main Street program. Officials with the Martinsville Uptown Revitalization Association say they don’t expect the district to ever return to its original role as a traditional shopping mecca. Instead it will offer unique shops, galleries and restaurants, thus making it a destination.

See Spot Run The Martinsville-Henry County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals places nearly 1,000 animals per year into new homes. In addition, the Society has an SPCA Dog Park that covers 6.5 acres along U.S. Highway 220 in Ridgeway. Amenities at the park, which surrounds the SPCA Adoption Center, include a 1/4-mile human/ dog fitness track along its perimeter, a 2-acre fenced-in section where dogs can run free and a grooming shop.
Recognize the Name? One of the most famous corporate names in U.S. business has ties to the Martinsville-Henry County region. Critz, in neighboring Patrick County, is home to the boyhood residence of Hardin Reynolds, whose sons R.J. and Richard Samuel went on to develop R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and Reynolds Metals Co. Reynolds Metals is now part of Alcoa, which produces products such as Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil. Reynolds Homestead is an 1843 brick house decorated with its original furnishings. The two-story home was restored in 1970 and now welcomes about 19,000 visitors each year. The Reynolds Homestead Learning Center and the Reynolds Homestead Research Center are located at the site and are extensions of Virginia Tech.

An Ever-Evolving
Arts Scene Martinsville boasts trendy galleries and outstanding community theater
Story By Jessica Mozo Photography By brian Mccord

hen artist Karen Despot moved to Martinsville with her husband Terry in 1990, the couple only planned to stay a year. But they fell in love with the community’s cozy atmosphere and promising arts scene, and 20 years later they’re still here. “I was astounded by the amount of hidden artistic talent here. I was just so thrilled to be here,” Despot says. “We’ve lived in big cities, and here you can get to the grocery and back in a half hour. People care about you. It’s a nice place to raise a family.” Despot also discovered Martinsville is a great place to be an artist. She spent four years teaching art in Martinsville City Schools before opening de Spot Art Gallery in October 2005. “I hit a certain point in my life when I turned 50. I realized I needed to make a go at my own artwork, or it wasn’t going to happen,” Despot says. “I put an ad out, and within two weeks
I had 10 people signed up for a drawing class.” At her gallery on Spruce Street, Despot displays her portrait work as well as her daughter’s photography. She also hosts workshops taught by nationally known artists on everything from painting from a live model to knitting. Somewhere in the mix, she finds time to teach group and private lessons to about 40 students of all ages. “We have beginning drawing up to a group of seasoned artists who’ve been painting for years,” Despot says. “It’s fun to watch people create things they never thought they could do. I’m having the best time. I try to make it fun for them, especially the kids. I don’t tell them what to draw – I let them decide and help them learn as they go.” Despot’s forte is portrait painting, and she has done several portraits of people and pets in Martinsville. “I love portraits because when I’m doing one, it’s almost like I’m talking to the person or the pet, and their

personalities really come out in the picture,” she says. Another bright spot in Martinsville’s arts scene is the Piedmont Arts Association, which oversees Studio 107, a community art studio on Church Street in Uptown Martinsville. The studio provides space for nearly a dozen local artists to create and display their work, much of it for sale. Piedmont Arts also oversees the TheatreWorks Community Players, which moved into a newly renovated building in February 2010. The black-box theater on Franklin Street has 120 seats and also houses rehearsal space, a scene shop and costume storage. TheatreWorks renovated the building with the help of a grant from The Harvest Foundation, allowing them to install a lighting grid and dimmer racks, state-of-the-art sound system, lobby, stage and theater curtains. “What makes TheatreWorks unique is the approach to be as professional as possible in the audition process, direction, costumes, set and casting,” says Barbara Parker, director of programs for the Piedmont Arts Association. “It makes this community very proud to see the incredible talent in this area.” TheatreWorks is made up of a 17-member board of directors, more than 125 actors, 40 musicians and more than 50 volunteers who help with set building, ushering
and poster distribution. “It has been a very diverse group, and several of the actors have gone on to work professionally,” Parker says. “But most of the cast members are just extremely talented individuals who have day jobs and families and simply love the theater.” Some of TheatreWorks’ most popular shows have been Peter Pan (2007), Beauty and the Beast (2010) and Greater Tuna (2010). “Every year, it gets better and better,” Parker says. “Greater Tuna was hilarious and has created some real cultural icons around here.” Martinsville residents can even see nationally known acts without leaving town. Over the last 20 years, Piedmont Arts’ On Stage! performance series has brought 76 professional theatrical and musical acts to Martinsville High School Auditorium, including the Grammy-nominated Cherryholmes band and Motown legends such as The Platters. The historic Rives Theatre in Uptown Martinsville also hosts concerts, plays and other creative productions. “Martinsville’s arts scene is young. It’s fun watching things happen here,” Despot says. “We’re not established yet like Asheville or Winston-Salem. But we’re doing it on our own to fit Martinsville’s style.”

Nature New recreation projects give Henry County residents more reasons than ever to get outside
Story By Jessica Mozo Photography By brian mccord

artinsville residents have plenty of great parks and outdoor spaces in which to enjoy nature, and some new initiatives are making it even more enticing to get out and enjoy the area’s natural beauty. The Martinsville-Henry County Community Nature Initiative, a joint program of the Virginia Museum of Natural History and The Harvest Foundation of the Piedmont, is luring families out of their homes and into the great outdoors with fun activities and educational programs. “Some of the benefits of enabling children to play and learn outside are healthy brain development; enhancing learning readiness, learning behaviors and problem-solving skills; and learning how to work in groups, share, negotiate, resolve conflicts and gain self-advocacy
skills,” says Tamara Poles, nature and outdoor education manager for the Virginia Museum of Natural History. “It also builds active, healthy bodies.” One of the Community Nature Initiative’s programs is Screen on the Green, a monthly outdoor movie at J. Frank Wilson Park. “An hour before the movie, we take children on nature hikes and do crafts and educational games and activities,” Poles says. “Then we show an educational movie of a relevant topic that month.” The museum collaborates with other area organizations to sponsor community events such as the Outdoor Fun Festival, the Kite Festival in March and the Earth Day Festival in April. The three festivals combined attracted more than 1,600 participants in 2010. The Community Nature Initiative even provides training sessions for local

teachers using websites such as www.earthforce.org and www.sharingnature.com. “Earth Force has a curriculum teachers can take back to their students and enable the kids to take on environmental projects. The curriculum teaches kids to identify environmental issues in their area and address them,” Poles explains. “In our area, Patrick Henry Elementary’s fifth- grade class went through the entire curriculum and developed board games for their peers that addressed certain environmental issues. We’re so proud of them – they did a great job.”
The museum is also working on the J. Frank Wilson Park Tree Inventory, an ongoing nature and outdoor educational tool that gives student groups, Scout troops and master gardeners an opportu nity to earn volunteer service hours. “We train Scout leaders and teachers, and they in turn teach students how to do the tree inventory,” Poles says. In the meantime, the Henry County Parks and Recreation Department is overseeing construction of a new federally funded $1.3 million passage of the Smith River Trail System. The Dick & Willie Passage will stretch 4.5 miles from Collinsville through Martinsville and
will be built on the former Norfolk Southern Railway. The 10-foot-wide paved trail will provide a new recreation opportunity for the county’s residents to walk, run, bike and rollerblade, and it will significantly boost Henry County’s tourism economy. It will include four trailheads, a scenic overlook at Mulberry Creek and a restroom facility at the Liberty Street trailhead. Construction of the trail is scheduled for completion in fall 2010. Another popular spot with outdoor lovers is the Philpott Lake Dam and Overlook, a scenic stop along Virginia’s

Birding and Wildlife Trail. The area is praised as one of western Virginia’s best spots to find the Brown-Headed Nuthatch, Pine Warbler and YellowThroated Warbler. Birders can also see Blue Jays, Carolina Chickadees, Tufted Titmice, White-Breasted Nuthatches, Carolina Wrens, Cedar Waxwings and Red-Eyed Vireos at Philpott Lake. In spring and summer months, wildflowers such as rhododendrons and deep pink magnolias adorn the lake. The flowers attract a multitude of butterflies, such as spicebush swallowtail, creating a picture perfect setting.

Martinsville on the Move Business is booming with new opportunities in Martinsville-Henry County
Story By Jessica Mozo
E
xcitement is running high in the Martinsville-Henry County business community, and with good reason. New companies are moving into Martinsville-Henry County, bringing job opportunities with them, and the city and state are planning to ensure Martinsville-Henry County maintains its business-friendly climate. For one success story, look no further than Faneuil Inc. The customer service firm is investing $2.4 million to
establish a new call center at the Clock Tower at Commonwealth Centre in Martinsville-Henry County. Over the next three years Faneuil will hire 250 call center employees to communicate with customers of Dominion Virginia Power who want to connect or disconnect electric service. The center is expected to handle between 800,000 and 1 million calls a year. Faneuil executives cited Martinsville-Henry County’s low cost of doing business, existing properties to
house the business, hospitality and enthusiastic workers as some of the reasons they chose the city for the new call center. Solutia Performance Films is another strong and growing business in Martinsville-Henry County. Formerly called CPFilms, the company is the world’s largest producer of solar control window films for automotive and architectural applications. Among other products, Solutia makes window films that offer affordable energy-saving

And Memphis-based snack manufacturer Monogram Food Solutions acquired a facility in Martinsville-Henry County in August 2009 with plans to bring more than 150 more jobs to Martinsville-Henry County over the next two years. The Martinsville-Henry County snack foods facility produces 12 million pounds of meat snacks annually for branded business, private label and store brands, and co-manufactures meat snacks for select national brands. “Working in Martinsville-Henry County is a pleasure,” says George Roden, vice president of operations for Monogram Snacks Martinsville-Henry County. “Our associates have a great work ethic and a ‘can-do’ attitude. The local and state government agencies have strongly endorsed and supported our growth efforts, and MartinsvilleHenry County is business-friendly. Martinsville-Henry County has a strong sense of community and a commitment to family success, and they strive to provide a safe, vibrant environment in which to raise a family.” Roden says Monogram chose Martinsville-Henry County for its availability of skilled and unskilled labor, a state-of-the-art facility in a prime industrial park, and available infrastructure to support future growth. Monogram, which produces food products under brands including Bass Pro Shops, Hannah’s Pickled Sausage, Wild Bill’s Jerky and Bull’s, had 135 full-time employees before acquiring the Martinsville-Henry County facility. Since then, the company has grown to 275 full-time employees. Monogram plans to further increase the capacity of the Martinsville-Henry County plant with the help of a $2 million loan from the Virginia Small Business Financing Authority. The money is being used to pay for new smokehouses and packaging equipment that will help the plant expand its product lines.

or existing workforce,” Witt says. A new position was created at the Chamber in July 2010 for a business services manager responsible for working with local employers, analyzing data and determining employers’ needs. In 2009, the chamber implemented a summer youth employment program that gave about 100 young people work experience with chamber member businesses. “We also partnered with the Workforce Investment Board to place about 30 adult interns with our member businesses,” Witt says. “The interns worked 40 hours a week for nine weeks and earned a wage with no tax deductions. We got a lot of positive feedback. Several people gained seasonal or part-time employment, and a few gained full-time employment. Those who didn’t gained another set of skills and another business reference.” Despite the nationwide economic slump, the chamber’s membership roster is holding steady at about 600 business members. “That’s a strong testament to the business community in our area and the benefits they receive from their chamber membership,” Witt says. Members say the most valuable benefits of belonging to the chamber are networking, business and community information, and taking part in the chamber’s Fast Track trade show in March. Fast Track is the region’s premiere expo, allowing businesses to showcase themselves to two separate kinds of customers: the business community and the general public. “We try to tailor our programs and initiatives to fit the needs of our membership each year”, Witt says. “We’re here to advocate for our membership and what is best for their businesses.”

Cafe at Arts & Deli For a more urbane environment, the Cafe at Arts & Deli offers an eclectic blend of a coffee shop, cafe, gift shop and local hangout in Uptown Martinsville. Sandwiches are made to order, served on a choice of bread, bagel or croissant with fresh meats and cheeses, and fresh baked goodies like cookies, cakes, brownies and tarts complement the cafe’s delicious gourmet coffee.
Martinsville hot dog Perhaps the most famous food is available only a few weeks of the year. The must-have menu item at the Martinsville Speedway NASCAR track is simply called the Martinsville hot dog. The hot dog doesn’t look like anything special, and its mysterious ingredient “Red 40” gives the hot dog a distinctive color. But race fans, drivers and team members down the delightful dogs in bunches, helping them achieve cult status on the NASCAR circuit. – Cary Estes

artinsville-Henry County shows dedication to health care in a variety of facilities and initiatives, including Martinsville Memorial Hospital, The Harvest Foundation, Martinsville Henry County Coalition for Health and Wellness and Bassett Family Practice. Comprehensive health care is easy to find in Martinsville-Henry County through Martinsville Memorial Hospital. The history of the hospital dates back nearly 100 years, but the current facility opened in 1970 and today is a 223-bed, full-service, acute-care community hospital. The hospital has consistently expanded its services over the years. One of the more recent additions is the Ravenel Oncology Center, a state-of-the-art cancer facility affiliated with Duke University’s oncology program. Each case is studied by physicians who meet regularly to discuss potential care options and design an individual treatment plan. Martinsville Memorial also specializes in women’s and infant care at the Women’s Center. In addition to prenatal care, the center offers breast disease treatment through the Julius Hermes Breast Care Center, which provides women with diagnostic and treatment services in the same facility. Other new health-care departments at the hospital include the Hyperbaric Medicine/Wound Care Center, a Sleep Lab and an Interventional Cardiology program.
Martinsville Henry County Coalition for Health and Wellness One of the largest Harvest Foundation grants was a $4.5 million gift in 2005 for the creation of Martinsville Henry County Coalition for Health and Wellness. The Coalition has established family aerobics sites throughout the area and offers a variety of education programs such as Diabetes Self Management, Worksite Wellness and Healthy Heart.
Bassett Family Practice One way the Coalition attempts to improve health care access is through the Bassett Family Practice. Supported by federal grants, this community health center offers medical services to residents of Henry County regardless of their ability to pay. A sliding fee scale based on income and family size is used to help patients afford annual physical exams, office visits for sudden illnesses, chronic disease management, lab services, immunizations and vaccinations and more. – Cary Estes
Eye Physicians & Surgeons of Martinsville, Inc.
The Harvest Foundation Martinsville Memorial was sold to Province Healthcare in 2002, which helped create the $150 million endowment, the Harvest Foundation. The annual interest from that endowment is used for a variety of initiatives throughout the community, including efforts to provide better access to health care and promote healthy behaviors. Since 2003, the Harvest Foundation has awarded more than 157 grants totaling more than $64 million in the areas of health, education and community vitality.
Celebrating 40 Years 2010 marks the 40th anniversary of Martinsville’s Memorial Hospital. Although the facility has seen many changes over the years, one important element remains in tact: The vision and dedication to quality patient care and convenience that continues to shape the hospital. Beyond recent additions to the facility, further cosmetic and construction plans will add to Memorial Hospital’s commitment to efficient health care.

martinsville-henry county remains a cultural oasis
Cultural opportunities are plentiful and profound in Martinsville-Henry County, with the arts community well represented. Here are some of the culture-based organizations and venues that draw rave reviews.
Visual Arts Piedmont Arts Association’s mission is to provide visual and performing arts through exhibits, live performances and educational programs for children and adults. Studio 107 is a communal art studio in Uptown Martinsville that has plenty of space for the creation and display of artwork, with artists working in media such as painting, sculpture, pottery and photography – and many of their finished pieces going on sale. The Southern Virginia Artisan Center is a gallery in Martinsville that offers area and regional artisans an outlet to showcase and sell their original folk art, photography, paintings, quilted artwork, jewelry, pottery and stained glass.
Interesting Museums The Virginia Museum of Natural History was founded in 1984 and is home to more than 22 million items detailing the history of Virginia as far back as prehistoric times. The museum is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. Fayette Street Museum in downtown Martinsville has been home to generations of African-Americans. In 2009, the museum opened to showcase more than 100 years of their experience, and one exhibit details
two miles of road where black-owned businesses, doctor’s offices and retail stores once thrived.
Fun Functions The Fieldale Heritage Festival takes place annually on the third Saturday in May. Locals and visitors alike celebrate the unique history of the small south central Virginia town of Fieldale. Meanwhile, the Annual Bassett Heritage Festival begins with an unlimited pancake breakfast by the Stanleytown Ruritan Club. There are vendors with food, snow cones, popcorn, jewelry, flowers, gifts, crafts, baked goods, t-shirts and more. There is also a Classic Car Show, lots of music, free rides for children sponsored by Bassett Industries and an honorary mayor is elected. The festival is held rain or shine every September. The VMNH also holds a Jurassic Pork BBQ and Chili Cook-off in October each year.
Bassett Historical Center The Bassett Historical Center of the Blue Ridge Regional Library System is the main genealogical facility for Henry County – and beyond – housing 63,000 items and hosting 4,000 visitors monthly. – Kevin Litwin marti n svi lle - h e n ry co u nt y
