Welcome to Midlothian An introduction to the area’s people, places and events
Now That’s an Espresso
Ahh, Peace and Quiet Need a break? Camp Hoblitzelle/Salvation Army campground is an ideal place for an escape to solitude. The camp is available to rent by churches, school groups, service clubs (Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions), government agencies, corporations and nonprofit groups. Activities that can occur on the spacious grounds include spiritual retreats, training conferences, youth rallies, marriage enrichment retreats and team-building events. The centerpiece of the facility is the Hoblitzelle Conference Center, set among rolling hills, giant mesquite trees and bluebonnet fields. Other on-site accommodations include a Barn Retreat Center, Alamo Lodge Retreat Center, cottages, dormitory housing and a reconstructed fort for housing. For more chamber member meeting facilities, visit www.midlothianchamber.org.
Ever have a Cloud 9 espresso? It’s pure white chocolate swirled with caramel sauce, espresso and steamed milk, then topped with whipped cream drizzled in caramel. That is just one of the many diverse offerings at Lighthouse Coffee, which is open seven days a week on North 9th Street. Besides coffee, tea, espressos and smoothies, Lighthouse also serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast selections include bagels, quesadillas, oatmeal, tortillas, muffins and scones, while lunch and dinner selections feature various sandwiches and more. Visit the chamber website for more restaurants in the area.
Boots or Suits At Cowboy Church, there is no dress code, so dress comfortable. Cowboy Church of Ellis County is the largest cowboy church in the world, and bills itself as one of the most exciting churches anywhere. It welcomes a congregation that is “divorced or married, black or white, Harley or horse, boots or suits.” Each Sunday, 1,200-1,500 people attend worship services at its West Highway 287 Bypass location in Waxahachie. Services are at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m., and there is also a Monday night vigil at 7:00. The music is always country and western, and many people have labeled Cowboy Church as the church of second chances. For listings of other churches in the area, visit www.midlothianchamber.org.

The Way to Help
An A+ Assignment Manna House offers families a helping hand. It serves the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of people in crisis. The charitable organization was founded in 1992 thanks to a local eighth grade class assignment. The eighth graders took on a Community Problem Solvers project and found out that their neighbors were hungry and needed shoes and clothes. The class got with community churches, and Manna House was established. One of the charity’s many services is providing food on a monthly basis to senior citizens and those on a fixed income.
United Way of West Ellis County raises funds that are distributed to dozens of local partner agencies each year. The chapter works with community leaders, businesses, government agencies, other nonprofit organizations and individuals to provide assistance to a wide range of people in need. Some area agencies that are helped include the American Red Cross, Avalon Summer Recreation, Boys & Girls Club of Waxahachie and more.

hen Richard Norman served as mayor in the 1970s, Midlothian was a small community of about 5,000 – the kind of city in which kids ride bikes around town and stop for ice cream sodas at the local drugstore. Norman’s two children graduated from Midlothian schools, and now they’re both living here and raising their own families – Norman’s four grandchildren – just a few miles from his home. While the population has grown, the friendly vibe remains. “This is a great place to live and work,” says Norman, who currently serves as executive director of the nonprofit REACH Council Prevention Services. “We have access to everything in the Fort Worth-Dallas area, but we have all the amenities of small-town living.” The Best of Two Worlds Located just 25 miles from Dallas and Fort Worth, Midlothian offers a gentler pace of life with easy access to the nation’s fifth-largest metropolitan area. One of the city’s biggest draws is the Midlothian Independent School District, known for academic excellence and a wealth of innovative programs. The district is home to the state’s second-largest FFA chapter, a dynamic, student-led leadership development organization for students of agricultural education. Midlothian FFA members regularly win top awards in state and national competitions, and the school district is home to a new 50,000-square-foot livestock facility and show arena. A sampling of Midlothian ISD’s many other offerings include the Balanced Literacy Program, an integrated approach to teaching reading and writing; Mathematics Pentathlon, which teaches problem-solving skills through interactive math games and competition; and Advanced Placement and dual-credit courses. Another major attraction is the city’s diverse inventory of homes, which allows people from different walks of life
to find the right house for their budget. Offerings range from comfortable starter homes in neighborhoods with parks and pools to luxurious executive retreats with scenic views. Small-Town Charm Jamie Wickliffe was raised in Midlothian, where her family owned a hardware store downtown for 50 years. Today she owns Coldwell Banker Americana Realtors, which is housed in the same downtown building that once included the hardware store. The city has grown exponentially since she was a child, but Wickliffe says Midlothian hasn’t lost that hometown feel. “Usually, when a town begins to grow, you lose the opportunity to interact with other families,” says Wickliffe, a mother of four who’s also a city council member and president of the nonprofit Midlothian ISD Education Foundation. “Midlothian has done a great job of creating an atmosphere where newcomers can blend with people who have been here for a long time, and it feels like home for everybody.” Bringing People Together Midlothian fosters a warm sense of community through its many outdoor festivals, which range from the Spring Fling Arts & Crafts Festival in May to the Fall Festival in October – an event that draws about 15,000 people each year. The city also offers free outdoor family movies, free summer concerts, community dances and other events along with a farmers market downtown. “We also have a phenomenal volunteer recreational sports program, including baseball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, tennis and more,” Wickliffe says. “All year long our park facilities are being used – and not just a little.” Plans for a paved greenway through the community are in the works, and the nearby Camp Hoblitzelle and Cedar Hill State Park offer fishing, boating, hiking, biking, swimming, camping and horseback riding.

A Vibrant
City Center Downtown Midlothian moves forward while preserving the past Story By Rebecca Denton | Photography By Brian mccord
M
idlothian’s city center is alive and well, with a historic downtown area that features peaceful green spaces, a complementary mix of businesses and a steady stream of visitors. And it’s only getting better. The Midlothian Downtown Business Association has fostered a major effort in the past few years to improve the facades of buildings and generally spruce up the downtown area, including the addition of some brick paving and attractive lighting fixtures. Jamie Wickliffe, owner of Coldwell Banker Americana Realtors downtown and a member of the city council and the Midlothian Downtown Business Association, was the first to revitalize one of the buildings about 10 years ago. She owns the two-story Coldwell Banker Americana Realtors building, which housed a portion of her family’s hardware store for 50 years and has been restored to its original historic splendor. “The challenge for any community with a historic downtown is to continue to keep it vibrant,” she says. “Midlothian has done a great job through the city, the chamber, merchants and the
Downtown Business Association of keeping downtown looking nice and making it as convenient as possible for people who want to visit.” In the heart of downtown is the scenic Heritage Park, a lushly landscaped spot complete with a walking path, flowers and shade trees. On site is the Larkin Newton Log Cabin, which was built in 1848 by the city’s first settlers and now offers free Wi-Fi provided by the city. The park is a popular place for weddings and other special events, and a new farmers market is a big draw on Saturdays during the prime growing season. Free summer concerts, community dances and other events are held at nearby Kimmel Park and the downtown business district, and these popular outdoor festivals draw residents and visitors in droves to experience Midlothian’s friendly, small-town feel. “It’s a very vibrant area, and there’s a lot of history down here,” says Richard Norman, a former mayor of Midlothian and current executive director of the nonprofit REACH Council Prevention Services, located downtown. “You have other businesses, restaurants and shops within walking distance. Every day
there are a lot of people in town just walking around, visiting the cabin, coming to lunch and shopping.” A sampling of the downtown attractions includes the popular embroidery and appliqué gift shop Claire Lynn; The Flower Shoppe; RE/MAX Suburban South; Quilts ’N More; the nonprofit REACH Council Prevention Services; and the nonprofit Manna House. The city’s eclectic mix of downtown restaurants includes Dee Tee’s restaurant, a local mainstay since 1958; Kim & Jenny’s Restaurant, known for tasty down-home cooking and a welcoming atmosphere; and Campuzanos Fine Mexican Food, a bustling Tex-Mex spot that’s a huge downtown draw. The building that houses Campuzanos is one of five downtown buildings that have been restored – including historically accurate color palettes, antique leaded glass windows and other authentic details – by Stephen Hidlebaugh, a member of the Downtown Business Association and owner of Leasing Impressions. “We’re trying to help these buildings live again in a really cool way,” he says. “Downtown is getting better all the time.”

Story By rebecca denton | Photography By Brian McCord

idlothian is a progressive, fast-growing city with a diverse economic base and a wealth of competitive offerings, including a skilled workforce and ease of transportation. An effort to preserve and revitalize the city’s downtown area is in the works, paving the way for building renovations, period lighting and consistent signage. “As we continue to grow, we don’t want to lose the uniqueness that makes Midlothian special,” says Midlothian Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Amanda Miller. “Our downtown area is beginning to display just how great the meshing of old and new can be.”
From Here to Anywhere One of the city’s biggest assets is its location. Midlothian offers the best of small-town living, with easy access to a metropolitan lifestyle – but well removed from the congestion of the Metroplex. Getting to and from Midlothian is quick and convenient. The nearest airport, Mid-Way Regional Airport, is an asset for regional businesses, who often use their airport for private corporate flights and recreational aviation. Located between Waxahachie and Midlothian, just 30 minutes south of downtown Dallas and 35 minutes southeast of downtown Fort Worth, this growing airport is expanding its 5,000-foot runway to 6,500 feet, and its runway, taxiway and ramp have recently been resurfaced. Commercial airports within an hour’s drive include the regional Dallas Love Field and Dallas-Forth Worth International. Rail service providers include Burlington Northern/Santa Fe and Union Pacific, and freight carriers include Central Texas Freight Lines, Roadway, Consolidated Tex-Pack, United Parcel Service and FedEx. The city is also home to the Midlothian
Conference Center, a state-of-the-art 39,000-square-foot facility that hosts local and regional meetings and events. A Strong Industrial Base “Midlothian’s industrial base has always fueled the business climate, and we are proud of our industrial roots,” Miller says. “Because of our location and our ability to supply businesses with needed workforce and other support, this is the ideal place for distribution centers, manufacturers and other related industries.” A large industrial park, Railport, is located along U.S. Highway 67 on the southwestern side of the city. Railport is home to several distribution facilities including Target and Toys R Us – both among the city’s major employers. On the north side of the city is MidTexas International Center’s Auto Park, a large automobile distribution and processing center.
Thanks to the Austin Chalk Escarpment, a unique geological formation that runs north-south through the city, Midlothian is a major site for cement quarrying and is home to three of the top 10 cement factories in the industry: Texas Industries (TXI Cement), Holcim and Ash Grove. Gerdau Ameristeel, a large steel factory, is located next to Texas Industry’s cement plant. Gerdau Ameristeel is one of the city’s largest employers. Ennis Inc., a leading wholesale printing and apparel company that’s traded on the New York Stock Exchange, has its corporate headquarters in Midlothian. A Skilled Workforce Navarro College, a two-year college, and Texas A&M-Commerce, a four-year university, both have a presence in Midlothian, which helps fuel an educated workforce for these industries and others.

attention. The chamber’s marketing campaigns have received top honors from the Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives Media Awards for the past four years, and the chamber received the 2006 Chamber of the Year recognition through the American Chamber of Commerce Executives Association. This competitive award is based on an evaluation of membership practices, programs developed and implemented, and financial management of chamber operations. “The award demonstrates that the Midlothian Chamber of Commerce is one of the soundest organizations in the country,” Miller says. “It gave us the mark of excellence that we had earned, and we were proud to be named the best chamber in the country.”

idlothian has experienced an explosion of growth in recent years, and the Midlothian Chamber of Commerce is following suit with some major growth of its own. Chamber membership has increased from about 230 at the beginning of 2005 to between 450 and 500 members in 2010 – and the numbers keep going up. “We found that the business community had a need for a true business association,” says Amanda Miller, president and CEO of the Midlothian Chamber of Commerce. “We became a one-stop place where businesses could come for information, networking and resources.” Excellence in communication is a major chamber initiative that has attracted regional and national

As an extension of its communication efforts, the Midlothian Chamber jumped into the social networking scene in 2009 through Facebook and Twitter – a move that continues to connect a growing number of people with local events and businesses. Another major focus is the chamber’s wide range of programs that assist businesses. Business Over Breakfast is a workshop-style program in which smallbusiness owners can learn about topics that larger businesses may deal with inhouse, such as marketing and accounting. When the nation’s economy took a downturn, the Midlothian Chamber offered a free Survive and Thrive series of workshops for businesses, including how to write a press release, how to use promotional products, and other tips to help businesses weather economic challenges. The successful Leadership Midlothian program offers a leadership retreat and classes, along with a graduation banquet and an Outstanding Alumni Award. In 2005, the chamber’s beautification committee grew into Keep Midlothian Beautiful, an affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful. The organization is working to establish nonprofit status, and it works under the chamber to address recycling, beautification, litter prevention and education, and has now established a community support program called “Friends of KMB.” Another huge part of the chamber’s role is coordinating events that attract people to local businesses, Miller says. The Fall Festival, one of the city’s largest annual events, includes a 5K run and draws about 15,000 people. The Spring Fling Arts and Crafts Fair, a smaller version of the Fall Festival, is a major draw for the downtown area each year. – Rebecca Denton

Local Flavor Midlothian’s wide variety of dining options hit the spot
M
idlothian’s character is reflected in a growing number of one-ofa-kind restaurants, with local dining options ranging from casual Mexican and Italian eateries to down-home cafes and barbecue restaurants. Even more food choices – including a smorgasbord of upscale options in Dallas and Fort Worth – are just a short drive away. One of the city’s most popular restaurants is Campuzanos Fine
Mexican Food, located on North Eighth Street downtown. Known for its generous portion sizes and friendly staff, this welcoming Tex-Mex restaurant is a great place to grab lunch or take the family to dinner. Some menu favorites include the grilled chicken and beef fajitas, shrimp enchiladas with ranchero sauce, and the restaurant’s signature spicy salsa. Ellis County BBQ on Silken Crossing is a longtime favorite that bills its
barbecue as “tender as your momma’s heart.” The laid-back atmosphere features six big-screen televisions, a digital jukebox and a full bar. Along with beef brisket, pork ribs, pulled pork, sliced sausage, hot links and chicken, the extensive menu includes fried bologna sandwiches, fried dill pickles, chicken fried steak and cheese fries. Dee-Tee’s Restaurant, in the heart of Midlothian on North Eighth Street, has been around for more than half a century. This venerable eatery serves up home-style meals in a casual setting with friendly service. It’s the kind of place where local old-timers gather to chat over coffee. Another great Italian option is Giovanni’s Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria on East Main Street, which serves up generous portions of its freshly baked pizzas and offers lunch specials at a reasonable price. Many local folks consider Kim & Jenny’s Restaurant in downtown Midlothian to be one of the best places in town for breakfast. Also open for lunch, this casual restaurant’s downhome cooking and welcoming atmosphere keep diners coming back. For a good cup of joe, locals love Busy B’s Bakery and the Lighthouse Coffee Bar. Both spots offer much more than just coffee, though. Catering services and all sorts of cakes are the specialty at Busy B’s, and the Lighthouse offers a full menu as well as a venue for local musical, poetic and visual artists. Visit www.midlothianchamber.org for other favorite local eateries. – Rebecca Denton

Education Midlothian ISD is one of the city’s main attractions
M
idlothian Independent School District, known for innovative educational programs and academic excellence, is one of the city’s main attractions. “The school district is why people come here,” says the city’s Parks and Recreation Manager James Berman, who has three grown children who attended Midlothian schools. “They’re moving here for the rural atmosphere and the school district.” Midlothian Independent School District has an enrollment of about 7,300, which includes one high school, two middle schools and six elementary schools. Out of 166 school districts with 5,000-plus students, MISD is the 22nd fastest-growing district in Texas, and its academics are top-notch. In 2009, the district was rated exemplary in 22 out of 25 academic measurements. MISD students also scored above the state average on their ACT and SAT scores in 2009, and they ranked in the upper 90th percentile on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills. Innovative Programs Judy Walling, MISD’s assistant superintendent for learning, says the district’s Balanced Literacy Program – an integrated approach to teaching 18
i m ag e s m i d l o t h i a n t x . c o m
reading and writing – is one of many strong, district-wide programs that give students an edge. Other popular programs include Destination ImagiNation, a problem-solving program in which children work as teams to solve challenges, and Mathematics Pentathlon, which teaches problem-solving skills through interactive math games and competition. Students are also encouraged to engage in the community. Through one innovative class called Community Problem Solving, students choose a problem in the community and work to solve it. For example, middle school students in 2009 raised money and wrote grants to add handicappedaccessible amenities to Hawkins Spring Park, including a swing that can accommodate a wheelchair. Academic Excellence For older students, college preparation is a priority. The district offers four SAT boot camps and four ACT boot camps throughout the year to help prepare students for the tests. It also offers a PSAT-preparatory class for students, along with free online SAT and ACT test preparation. About 510 students participate in advanced placement classes, and MISD also
offers eight dual-credit courses. More than 150 students are currently enrolled in dual-credit courses at MISD. Walling says many parents love the district’s use of PowerSchool, a Webbased system that allows them to log in and view their child’s progress – from test grades to attendance records – every day. Higher Education Midlothian residents have access to the two-year Navarro College and the four-year Texas A&M-Commerce on one campus in Midlothian through a unique partnership between the two schools. Other area colleges include Northwood University in Cedar Hill; Dallas Baptist University, Mountain View Community College, Southern Methodist University in Dallas; Tarrant County College and University of Texas at Arlington in Arlington; and Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. – Rebecca Denton

Sports & Recreation Midlothian recreation centers on the city’s open spaces
R
ecreation is an integral part of Midlothian’s vibrant lifestyle, and the wealth of outdoor opportunities ranges from boating and hiking to youth sports and golf. The city is home to 11 parks, and it’s continually adding even more scenic places to play. One of the city’s mostused green spaces is Heritage Park, a quiet, downtown spot complete with a walking path, flowers and shade trees – landscaping that received an award in 2009. On site is the Larkin Newton Log Cabin, built in 1848. This park is a popular place for weddings and other special events, and a farmers market takes place here during the warmweather months. Free summer concerts, community dances and other events are held at Kimmel Park and the downtown business district, and free family
movies are played once a month outdoors during the spring and summer at the 21-acre Hawkins Spring Park. Movie nights usually draw between 400 and 650 people – quite a crowd for a mid-size town. “The parks give kids and adults a safe place to gather,” says Parks and Recreation Manager James Berman. “It’s all about quality of life and bringing the community together.” Youth sports are a major part of the city’s culture, with baseball, soccer, tennis, football, wrestling and softball among the offerings. Many games are played at the 25-acre Midlothian Sports Complex, which includes two soccer fields, four ball fields, eight tennis courts, a basketball court, sand volleyball court, playground and more. Jaycee Park hosts youth baseball games, and youth soccer takes place at
Hawkins Spring Park. A major draw for folks in the DallasForth Worth Metroplex is nearby Joe Pool Lake, where visitors can enjoy fishing, boating and camping. Along the northeast corner of Joe Pool Lake is Cedar Hill State Park, a gorgeous area that includes a marina, boat ramps, a fishing barge, hiking trails, a mountain biking trail, a swimming area and more than 300 campsites. In the planning stage in early 2010 was a new 125-acre, multi-use recreation area featuring a splash park, trails, playgrounds, athletic fields, concession stands and a picnic pavilion. In addition, a trail system master plan was completed in summer 2009 to add a network of trails to provide hiking and biking access throughout the community – an effort that residents have deemed a top priority. – Rebecca Denton m i d loth ia n
