2 3 As sunny summer days slip into crisp autumn evenings, Nashville hosts an incredible array of fun events that add to any Music City itinerary. Summer
June’s blockbuster event is the CMA Music Festival (June 6-9), where you can rub shoulders with your favorite stars during fan events, daytime block parties and evening concerts, including the CMT Music Awards. The Juneteenth Annual Harmonic
Fitness Fun Day takes place at Hadley Park on June 15. The event is free and for all ages. July kicks off with the spectacular Music City July 4th: Let Freedom Sing! celebration at Riverfront Park. Ranked as one of the nation’s best fireworks displays, this event offers multiple days of activities.
OPPOSITE/ Fireworks light up the Nashville skyline on July 4th. THIS PAGE/ 1. LP Field is the home stadium of the NFL’s Tennessee Titans. 2. This year marks Germantown’s 33rd annual Oktoberfest. 3. All of the free July 4th festivities begin midday with incredible live performances – The Band Perry is this year’s headliner – from some of Music City’s best musicians and family activities. This all leads to a star-studded concert and pyrotechnics display accompanied by the GRAMMY® -winning Nashville Symphony, which lasts well over 25 minutes. This year, we celebrate for three days (July 4-6), so make a long weekend of it! The popular Music City Hot Chicken Festival, also held on July 4th in East Nashville, adds fuel to the fireworks. It’s so easy to eat your way through August. The month begins with the annual Tomato Art Fest in East Nashville, one of Nashville’s hip and eclectic emerging neighborhoods. A local favorite, the event uses art and cuisine to bring tomato-lovers together to pay homage to the fruit. No doubt some of those tasty garden treats make their way into the secret sauces at Riverfront Park’s Music City Festival & BBQ Championship, which features family-friendly activities, a kids’ zone, the annual Swine Ball and, of course, plenty of great Music City live entertainment and mouthwatering barbecue.
Autumn
Magic is in the air as football season takes hold in Music City. Nashville has hard-hitting action from both the
NFL Tennessee Titans and the SEC Vanderbilt Commodores. The pros hit the gridiron at LP Field for two preseason and eight home games, including matches against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans. And don’t forget to follow the puck as the NHL Nashville Predators take to the ice at Bridgestone Arena in the trek to the Stanley Cup playoffs. Folks will head outdoors for the annual Lady Speed Stick Women’s Half Marathon in early September, the TACA Fall Craft Fair in Centennial Park in late September, the Celebrate Nashville Cultural Festival in early October and Germantown’s popular Oktoberfest in mid-October. Fall is also filled with song. The Music City Eats Festival, featuring the Kings of Leon, takes center stage Sept. 20-22. Then Zac Brown Band’s wildly popular Southern Ground Music & Food Festival, Sept. 27-29, is back for a repeat performance. The second annual event promises to be bigger and better, featuring multiple days of fantastic live music on Nashville’s Lawn at Riverfront Park. October’s Grand Ole Opry Birthday Bash celebrates the venerable music venue’s 88th year. And November packs in the stars for the 47th annual CMA Awards broadcast live from Bridgestone Arena in early November, followed by the live Country Christmas concert taping.

winter
Nashville offers many great reasons to visit during the holiday season, starting with the annual tradition of lighting the trees at the Gaylord Opryland® Resort & Convention Center, which transforms the resort into a winter wonderland. Be sure to enjoy the annual live holiday show, which features the famed Rockettes and other great musical guests. And don’t miss the Grand Ole Opry when shows are staged at the Ryman.
Two huge events wrap up 2013. First, the annual Music City Bowl pits an SEC team against an ACC rival at LP Field in late December (go to visitmusiccity.com for more information). Then, the city rings in the new year Music City-style at the annual Music City Bash on Broadway. The free downtown festival on New Year’s Eve has great live music in the afternoon, leading up to headline entertainment and the famous Music Note Drop® to usher in 2014.
1. The Tennessee Titans draw thousands of fans looking for exciting NFL action. 2. The Lady Speed Stick Women’s Half Marathon is the largest women’s half marathon series in the country. 3. Millions of lights adorn the trees at the Gaylord Opryland® Resort & Convention Center during the holidays. 4. The Nashville Predators host their home games at Bridgestone Arena. 5. East Nashville
Just across the river, the hip East Nashville neighborhood boasts Holland House Bar & Refuge as a star in its crown, its innovative cuisine and cocktail artistry nationally noted. Eastland Cafe is another great neighborhood restaurant, or enjoy live music with dinner at The Family Wash. For gourmet burgers and beer, take a seat at The Pharmacy Burger Parlor and Beer Garden.
Germantown
Just north of downtown, the Nashville Farmers’ Market is a popular spot for locals who enjoy its varied dining options including Cajun, Indian, Greek, barbecue, and pizza, as well as a couple of sweet shops. For even more treats, try Germantown’s Cupcake Collection, a family-owned confectionary (and an obsession for some Nashvillians). The Original Nooley’s and Swett’s Restaurant are Nashville icons and longtime favorites for a casual meal. And Germantown Cafe is the place to go for an evening out on the town.
Green Hills
The Green Hills area features Table 3 Restaurant & Market, which serves French food in an authentic bistro atmosphere. There’s also a market and bakery next door with sandwiches, salads, soups and freshly made pastries. At F. Scott’s Restaurant & Jazz Bar, chefs use fresh, local and regional ingredients to create their eclectic menu and, of course, great, live music can be enjoyed each evening. Music and food are also on the menu at the legendary Bluebird Cafe. Classic American comfort food is on tap at Nero’s Grill.
The Gulch
The Gulch is one of the city’s most exciting areas and offers interesting dining options. Kayne Prime features steak and seafood, and is joined by Watermark and Virago in offering a memorable upscale dining experience. Sambuca is home to a crowd of well-heeled diners who also frequent Music City Flats, Bar Louie and Whiskey Kitchen for more casual fare.

Jackson’s Bar & Bistro, Cabana and Sunset Grill are popular dining destinations, each offering its own character and flavor to diners.
Midtown
Midtown and West End Avenue are home to a number of outstanding eateries. The Catbird Seat has garnered substantial national attention for its unique menu and five-star dining experience. More tasty choices include Midtown Cafe, Valentino’s Ristorante, The Row, South Street, Bound’ry, Soulshine Pizza Factory and Jimmy Kelly’s, legendary for its delicious steaks and storied history. If you’re craving Mexican, don’t miss Taco Mamacita for interesting takes on traditional favorites.

Music Valley
The Music Valley area offers a more relaxed atmosphere to enjoy great food and music at John A’s, Santa Fe Cattle Co., Cock of the Walk and the Nashville Palace. If your plans include a stroll inside the Gaylord Opryland® Resort & Convention Center, enjoy everything from bangers and mash at Findley’s Irish Pub to classic American fare at Cascades American Café to aged steaks at Old Hickory Steakhouse.
12South
The 12th Avenue South neighborhood has become a foodie haven. Burger Up offers a creative menu of healthy burgers and salads, and Urban Grub serves up an incredible dining experience with one of the most interesting menus in the city. Edley’s Bar-B-Q has earned a devoted following with locals and visitors alike, and Frothy Monkey Coffeehouse is the place to grab a cup of coffee or light lunch and get a taste of the “hood.”
4. Urban Grub serves a variety of Southern specialties, fresh seafood, and cantina-style tacos and enchiladas. 5. Downtown Nashville has long been known as the entertainment hub of the city. The SoBro neighborhood is one of the city’s fastest-growing areas, thanks to a major real estate boom that has expanded the downtown entertainment core to offer visitors more than ever. Already home to the breathtaking Schermerhorn Symphony Center, the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum and the vast Bridgestone Arena, SoBro awaits the opening of several new attractions, restaurants and hotels in 2013 that will transform it into one of downtown’s trendiest districts.
Omni Nashville Hotel/Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum
The sleek, new Omni Nashville Hotel, opening in winter 2013 with 800 rooms, Mokara spa, fitness center and rooftop pool deck, will connect with both the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum and the new Music City Center.
OPPOSITE/ Nashville’s famed entertainment district is the place to be for live music. THIS PAGE/1. A unique way to tour the city is aboard the Nashville Pedal Tavern. 2. The Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum is undergoing a 200,000-square-foot expansion that will double its size. The expansion will include an 800-seat theater and a new education center and children’s gallery partially funded by country superstar Taylor Swift. Together, the Omni Hotel, expanded Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum and Music City Center will be a one-of-a-kind entertainment destination for convention-goers, local residents and tourists alike.
New SoBro Area Hotels
Also slated to open in late 2013 is the new Hyatt Place Nashville/ Downtown. The 13-story, 255-room Hyatt Place hotel is only one block from the Music City Center and around the corner from countless live music venues on Lower Broadway.
Other new hotels dotting the landscape include a 200-room Hilton Garden Inn on Third Avenue South, a Nashville-based Pinnacle Hotels property on Fifth Avenue South and several others that will be announced in 2013.
Eat Your Heart Out
Dining in SoBro got kicked up a notch in 2012 with the opening of The Southern Steak & Oyster restaurant on the ground floor of the Pinnacle building at Symphony Place. With its fabulous fare, The Southern has quickly become a flagship restaurant for the SoBro district, regularly attracting the movers and shakers of the city. The Encore building also eagerly welcomed a hip new restaurant, Etch, in 2012. Located on the Encore’s ground floor, Etch specializes in adventuresome flavors such as Moroccan Spiced Duck Breast and Octopus Bruschetta.
1. Kix Brooks and Reba McEntire are just two of the many people who have contributed to preserving Nashville’s musical heritage and have stars on the Music City Walk of Fame. 2. Musical legends such as Patsy Cline, Ray Charles, Taylor Swift and many more have had exhibits at the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum. 3. The Southern Steak & Oyster is a popular spot for breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch.
4 5
Other popular options in the area are The Listening Room Cafe, where you can grab a bite while catching a performance from a local singer/songwriter, and Husk, James Beard winner Sean Brock’s second location of the critically acclaimed restaurant in Charleston, SC.
Johnny Cash Museum
Country music fans won’t want to miss the new Johnny Cash Museum, which opened in 2013 near the intersection of Third Avenue South and Broadway. The $7 million, two-story museum was the dream of Bill Miller, a lifelong friend of the Man in Black. With memorabilia from the Cash family, Miller’s personal collection and a former Cash museum in Hendersonville, it is one of the most comprehensive Cash collections in the country.

4. Duck confit is served with fig foie gras butter, orange peel bread and blackberries at Etch. 5. In addition to the Omni Nashville Hotel’s luxury rooms and convenience to downtown attractions, the hotel will also include a spa, rooftop pool, dining and live music. 6. Bridgestone Arena is home to the NHL’s Nashville Predators and the Visitor Center, located in the bottom of the arena tower. 7. Horse-drawn carriage tours are available to enjoy the sights of Nashville.
There’s no question that Nashville is Music City. Every neighborhood features live music options showcasing all genres of music in authentic and unpretentious atmospheres. Begin your experience downtown. Stroll along Broadway any hour of the day and hear some of the country’s best bluegrass, country, Americana or rock ’n’ roll pouring from honky-tonk doors, a cool club or a sidewalk troubadour.

Each honky-tonk has its own unique character, with a vast history of the stars who got their start playing there. There are the legends, such as Tootsies Orchid Lounge, where Grand Ole Opry and Music Row greats hung out for decades, and where you may spot an up-and-coming Johnny Cash or Willie Nelson. Down the street, on honkytonk highway, traditional country also put Robert’s Western World on the map for music lovers from around the globe. And for a change of pace, you can’t beat downtown’s “Rock Block,” with Bourbon Street Blues & Boogie Bar in lively Printers Alley for jazz and blues, National Underground, with its roster of country and rock performers, and the iconic Hard Rock Cafe for the latest sounds in rock and pop. Head east or west from downtown, and the music plays on. With approximately 120 clubs in the city, it’s easy to find places to listen. Keep an eye out for the guitar-pick signs indicating a Live Music Venue at many spots. Be sure to download the Nashville Live Music App on your smartphone, and discover the nightly lineup of entertainment at clubs all over the Nashville area. In East Nashville, The 5 Spot is the hip place to be, featuring music that ranges from string band to doo-wop and ’60s rock. The Family Wash offers rock, jazz and a dollop of country. Jazz takes center stage at F. Scott’s Restaurant & Jazz Bar in Green Hills, and the legendary Bluebird Cafe hosts its popular “musicians in the
round” shows, where writers tell the stories behind the songs they’re playing in an intimate setting. And you won’t want to miss a Music City Roots show at The Loveless Barn, featuring a wide variety of talented artists. The Gulch area boasts the famous Station Inn, a venerated bluegrass venue. Drop by Mercy Lounge or Exit/In or 3rd & Lindsley to hear local rock and indie music. Festivals are another great way to hear the Nashville sound. Zac Brown Band’s Southern Ground Music & Food Festival comes back to Nashville in September, featuring multiple days of fantastic live performances. Last year’s guests included greats Gregg Allman, John Mayer and Sheryl Crow. More than 70 hours of live country music lures fans from around the globe to the annual CMA Music Festival in June. And the Americana Music Festival offers the best live performances in its genre in September. A great way to enjoy some of Nashville’s best music is at Musician’s Corner in Centennial Park, where free live performances take place every Saturday afternoon in May, June, September and October. Or take in a big-name performance at the Bridgestone Arena or Ryman Auditorium and classical fare at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Whatever your ears are hungry for, Nashville is singing your song.

A free Nashville Live Music App, (visitmusiccity. com/nashvillemusicapp) available for both iPhone and Android devices, locates live music venues throughout the city and tells you who’s on stage. Users can search by area of town or venue name, and a handy map function will show your location and the live music venue options nearby. No app? No problem. Finding Your Way
Also transforming the way people connect to music in Nashville is the Wayfinding Guidance System. The program integrates pedestrian maps and signage with local street and traffic guidance signs. Mapping music City Finding Nashville’s live music venues is easier than ever, thanks to a few new initiatives by the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp. A free Nashville Live Music app, available for both iPhone and Android devices, locates live music venues throughout the city and tells you who’s on stage. Users can search by area of town or venue name, and a handy map function will show your location and the live music venue options nearby. The app’s calendar will search live music events up to 14 days out. Download at visitmusiccity.com/nashvillemusicapp. No app? No problem. The CVC has also set up a series of guitar pick signs that indicate a music venue. If a particular venue features four or more live shows a week, a pick is placed outside so visitors know where to go for music. Also transforming the way people connect to music in Nashville is the Wayfinding Guidance System. The program integrates pedestrian maps and signage with local street and traffic guidance signs. Located in some of the city’s most traveled tourist areas, the signs detail the major attractions around the area and help visitors find the sites closest to them.
