Welcome to San Jose An introduction to the area’s people, places and events

San Jose Airport Located three miles north of downtown San Jose, the Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport is a completely self-supporting enterprise, owned and operated by the city. More than 8.3 million passengers use the airport each year. The airport averages 259 commercial and 87 general aviation departures and arrivals per day and offers service from 12 airlines, including American, Delta, Southwest and United.

Follow the Music Each summer, music fills the air in Plaza de Cesar Chavez Park during the most highly anticipated concert series of the year, Music in the Park. Produced by the San Jose Downtown Association, the event has grown steadily each year for more than two decades. The series features 13 concerts, which occur on Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 9:15 from early June through late August. A variety of musical genres are represented throughout the series, from the alternative rock Cold War Kids to the Latin/Jazz stylings of the Pete Escovedo Orchestra, both headliners during the 2010 season.

Fast Facts n San Jose is the third-largest city in California, behind Los Angeles and San Diego. It is the 10th-largest city in the United States.

Museums and More Plain weirdness is everywhere at the Winchester Mystery House, a sprawling Victorian mansion built by the heiress to the Winchester Rifle fortune. The house boasts 160 rooms, 10,000 windows, 950 doors, 47 fireplaces and 40 staircases. Bizarre construction elements include passageways in the walls and a staircase that consists of two-inch high steps. The purple Children’s Discovery Museum has been ranked by Child magazine as one of the top 10 children’s museums in the nation. And of course, since this is Silicon Valley, the city would not be complete without the Tech Museum of Innovation, a technological playground that includes 250 exhibits and an IMAX theater.

n More than 5,600 technology companies employing approx imately 240,000 people are located in Silicon Valley. n The moniker Silicon Valley is derived from the silicon used in making the semiconductors used in computers. n In 2010, Forbes.com named San Jose one of the safest cities in the country.

location San Jose, the Capital of Silicon Valley, is the largest city in the Bay Area. It’s located about 50 miles south of San Francisco. beginnings San Jose was founded November 29, 1777, as Pueblo de San Jose. It was California’s first civilian settlement. Now known as the Capital of Silicon Valley, San Jose used to be a largely agrarian community. Orchards of apricots, walnuts, cherries and plums dotted the hillsides and valley. Back then, it was referred to as the Prune Capital of the World. for more information San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce 101 W. Dream of a Bright Christmas

Hard Act To Follow Silicon Valley residents have improved access to arts and culture experiences thanks to a powerful network of leaders, called 1stACT Silicon Valley. The organization is a coalition of business, civic and arts innovators focused on creating and maintaining an authentic sense of place and cultural identity for the area. The group’s function is threefold: It supports the local arts and culture industry with leadership, strategic investment, marketing, branding and capacity building; it creates more opportunities for people of all types to become engaged in the arts; and it works to realize the vision of making downtown San Jose Silicon Valley’s urban core.

No snow is necessary for a brilliant Christmas celebration in San Jose, thanks to Christmas in the Park, one of the largest Christmas displays in the country. The event, which celebrates its official 30th anniversary in 2010, traces its roots to a small display of animated characters in front of community leader Don Lima's business on Willow Street in 1950. Lima donated his characters to the city in 1970, and they were displayed at City Hall for a decade before Lima formally organized a group including members of the Chamber of Commerce to have the display moved to Plaza de Cesar Chavez Park. The spectacle has grown since then to include more than 60 musical and animated exhibits and the 60-foot City Community Giving Tree. The free event draws more than 450,000 people to downtown San Jose during the four-week holiday season from late November through December.

All That Jazz Top artists of the jazz genre and music lovers come together each August at the AT&T San Jose Jazz Festival, held over three days on nine stages and 15 club venues all within walking distance in downtown San Jose. There are four indoor and five outdoor stages, with the main stage located at Plaza de Cesar Chavez Park. Each stage area has several vendor booths, selling food, beverages, arts and crafts. The event has delighted audiences for more than two decades and is produced by San Jose Jazz, a nonprofit organization that produces culturally diverse performance and educational programs throughout the year.

Collaboration for Education The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library is a product of a first-of-itskind partnership between San Jose State University Library and San Jose Public Libraries. The university and city co-developed and co-manage the $177.5 million facility, which is the largest all-new library west of the Mississippi. Opened in 2003, the library serves as a rich educational resource for both students and community members, with a collection of approximately 1.9 million items, and each floor features public art installations.

Good Life From Sunshine to Sports, San Jose Has It All Story By Laura Hill Photography By jeff adkins

ith an active cultural life, great schools, history of economic success and progressive planning, San Jose and the Silicon Valley have earned their reputations for a superb quality of life. And did we mention 300 days of sunshine annually and a climate that makes outdoor fun possible year-round? Since it began life as an agricultural community, the San Jose area has

undergone dramatic transformation into the world’s leading technology center. “Silicon Valley” has become shorthand for a forward-thinking community that has led the international tech revolution. But talent pool aside, the San Jose area has unique amenities to offer those who live and work here. “We certainly have some natural, built-in advantages that attract people to the area,” says Harry Mavrogenes, director of the San Jose Redevelopment

Agency. “Our climate and quality of life are positive things people look for first, and when you have a good environment, schools and brain power, people want to be here.” Big Dreams, Future Thinking Thrive in San Jose Perhaps one of the most attractive aspects of life here is an almost palpable innovative spirit that makes even the biggest dreams seem attainable, whether it’s a city’s green future, a

Major League Baseball team or the most outside-the-box solar research facility. “You get the sense that anything can happen and you’re surrounded by success stories,” Mavrogenes says. “It’s an environment that’s electric and happening, a spirit of innovation and trying new ideas. We’re probably more advanced in that regard than most other places.” He cites as an example the city’s ambitious, 20-plus-year-old recycling program, a national leader. The area’s educational offerings are also first-rate, from excellent public and private schools to such outstanding higher-education options as Stanford University, San Jose State University, Santa Clara University and a number of technical and specialty schools. Plenty To Do in the Silicon Valley Though San Francisco’s attractions are close by, the San Jose area boasts its own varied cultural, sports and entertainment choices. Families enjoy a lively event calendar as well as the San Jose Museum of Art, Lick Observatory and Children’s Discovery Museum, Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley, Opera San Jose and the San Jose Repertory Theatre. Sports are another entertainment option. The San Jose Sharks, a pro hockey team, are based here, and so are other teams – the Earthquakes, a pro soccer team; and the Sabercats, with pro arena football. The Oakland A’s are waiting for the go-ahead from Major League Baseball to build a stadium in San Jose. The city has invested more than $600 million in parks and recreation. Its 188 parks range from tiny pocket parks for toddlers to regional parks such as Alum Rock Park, a 722acre wilderness in the city. The city maintains a working farm, Prusch Farm Park, Happy Hollow Park and Zoo and nine dog parks. Green space has been an integral part of smart-growth planning, says Mona Favorite-Hill, parks, recreation and neighborhood services communication director. “The opportunities to get exercise and enjoy green space can get limited as a city grows,” Hill says. “But we need to offer spaces for people to walk, stretch, ride their bikes or just sit. Expanses of trees clean the air – and give people space to breathe.”

How

Green is This Valley? San Jose and the Silicon Valley Take Sustainability Seriously

Story By Laura Hill Photography By jeff adkins

I

t’s not easy being green, as Kermit the Frog once sang, but environmental sustainability is critical for a growing region and a goal Silicon Valley takes seriously. Long at the forefront of innovative technology, the valley is home to an increasing number of businesses specializing in renewable energy technology. Companies like Westinghouse Solar, SolFocus, SunPower, SoloPower, Nanosolar, Stion, Sopogy, SVTC and Fat Spaniel are among the leaders in the field. And in 2009 San Jose was rated by BusinessWeek as the number one U.S. city in which to start and grow a clean-tech company. Renewable energy generation now accounts for 7,000 jobs in the valley, and city officials hope to see more coming, with its Clean Tech Strategy in place to help make it happen. “Silicon Valley has reinvented itself several times,” says Harry Mavrogenes, executive

director of the San Jose Redevelopment Agency. “We are looking at diversifying, trying to attract solar companies, green technology and biosciences, because those are areas that have a link to the present nature of Silicon Valley, but take it in new directions.” Sustainable Energy a Top Priority in San Jose Making sustainable energy a part of daily life in the area is one of San Jose’s top priorities. In 2007 the city initiated its Green Vision, an ambitious plan that in 2009 was named Best Sustainable Development Program for a Big City in the U.S. by the International Economic Development Council. The 15-year program’s goals, related to jobs, energy, water, waste, trees and transportation, will make San Jose an international leader in sustainable development. Among the program’s 10 goals: create 25,000 clean technology jobs;

Being Green San Jose has a long history of adopting sustainable practices. The first environmental incubator in the United States was established here. The city also boasts highly successful recycling and water conservation programs.

San Jose’s Green Vision In 2005, San Jose adopted the goal of becoming a “Global Sustainable City” and meeting the standards of the U. N. Urban Environmental Accords. in 2007 after the city council signed the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ Climate Protection Agreement, the city went one step further and adopted the most aggressive municipal greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals in the nation. recycle and reuse 100 percent of the city’s water; build or retrofit 50 million square feet of green buildings; become a zero-waste community, diverting waste from landfills and turning it into energy; install 100,000 solar roofs, cutting electricity use by half; and move to 100 percent renewable energy. “A vital cycle of success in the public sector requires growing an economy that enables prosperity for all and helps create a vibrant, sustainable community with a high quality of life,”

says Paul Krutko, the city’s chief development officer. “The Green Vision is our roadmap to do just that. It ensures that economic development and environmental efforts benefit individuals at all levels of the economic spectrum, as well as businesses at key stages in incubation, attraction and retention.” Energy Efficiency Sound huge? It is – but it’s happening. Energy efficiency measures

have been implemented and solar panels installed at city facilities, with estimated energy savings to date of $986,000. A street tree inventory is underway, with thousands of new trees already planted. Forty-one percent of the city’s vehicle fleet is now using alternative fuel; and 66 percent of the city’s trash is already diverted from landfills. A 3.4-acre, roof-mounted photovoltaic solar electric system on the Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport’s new 3,350-space, seven-story

rental car center and public parking garage has the effect of removing 235 passenger vehicles from the road or the amount of carbon that 6,422 trees would sequester annually. The 4,700 panels produce about 20 percent of the facility’s power needs. It is one of the largest airport solar electric installations in the United States. The city also boasts the first platinum-rated, LEED-certified city hall in the country. The building is projected to save more than $30,000 in energy costs annually. Hub of High-Tech High-tech Companies Power Silicon Valley

Story By Cary Estes Photography By Jeff Adkins

T

echnology and innovation remain signature traits of the business scene in San Jose and the Silicon Valley. Therefore, the region is rich in human resources, with a large population of highly skilled, creative talent in computer science and engineering.

High-Tech Headquarters The list of companies either headquartered or with a significant presence in Silicon Valley reads like a virtual Who’s Who of high-tech entrepreneurship and the 1990s computerized revolution: Apple, Adobe Systems, Cisco, eBay, Facebook, Google, Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi, IBM, Lockheed Martin, Oracle and SunPower, to name just a few. And these same companies are some of the biggest employers in the region. There are 6,300 technology companies located in the San Jose Metropolitan Area, employing approximately 256,000 people. That means high-tech firms account for more than 30 percent of all employees in the area. Among the prevalent professions in San Jose are semiconductor processors, computer hardware and software engineers, sales engineers, electronics engineers, electromechanical equipment assemblers, electrical engineers and engineering managers.

Entrepreneurs and Venture Capital San Jose is one of the best cities in the country in terms of encouraging entrepreneurship, with 85 percent of new job growth in the region coming from companies that are less than 10 years old. More than $7 billion in venture capital was invested in San Jose-area companies in 2008, and the city leads the nation in the number of patents generated. Because of the proliferation of high-paying engineering and computer science jobs in the region, San Jose households enjoy some of the highest rates of disposable income in the U.S. The median household income is $77,000, and 67 percent have incomes of more than $50,000.

Major High-Tech Employers

Airport of the Year The presence of so many national and international companies in the region led to a $1.2 billion modernization project at the Mineta San Jose International Airport. The airport built a new concourse and terminal, refurbished an existing terminal, consolidated its rental car garage and put in all new infrastructure. In 2008, the Airline Pilots Association International union named Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International the “Airport of the Year.” Nearly 10 million passengers flew out of the airport that year. Chamber Report Chamber Targets Issues, Monitors Trends, Supports Youth

f you think a local chamber of commerce is about nothing but mixers, luncheons and the occasional newsletter, you haven’t met the San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber. Sure, it offers its growing membership all the fun stuff you’d expect, but beyond that the chamber maintains a vital presence as an advocate for business, weighing in on important issues and crafting far-reaching programs designed to serve the changing needs of the business community. “We’re probably doing three to five events a month, mainly geared toward small business,” says Jason Minsky, chamber vice president, membership & marketing. Among those events is a lively series of educational seminars for members, which have focused on such diverse topics as time management,

identity theft, search engine optimization, social networking and, a favorite, “How to Love Cold Calling.” “We’ve had a tremendous response to these seminars,” Minsky says. Advocate for San Jose Silicon Valley Business The chamber’s role as an advocate for business is of primary importance to the organization, Minsky says. It has drafted a series of position papers, available on its website, addressing such issues as increases in city fees charged to businesses, pension/benefit reform in the city of San Jose, the city’s contracting-out process and unemployment. It meets regularly, maintains close communication with local and state elected officials, and firmly endorses pro-business political candidates.

“About two years ago we outlined a bigger strategy and have created an infrastructure to implement that strategy,” says Jim Eller, 2010 chair of the chamber’s ChamberPAC advocacy wing. “We’ve tried consciously to be more proactive because we think that’s the more effective way to get results. Labor has done this for years and has been very successful, but business has not been as methodical – we’re trying to change that.” The chamber’s strong stance during the last mayoral race landed it in a hard-fought lawsuit by the city, which charged the organization with campaign finance violations. Threeplus years later, the chamber ultimately won the suit. While it maintains friendly relationships with city government, the victory, Eller says, “is indicative of the fact that we dug in and said no. We will do what’s right for business.” San Jose’s Business Future The chamber’s TYP (Today’s Young Professionals) program, started in early 2009, has been a major success, bringing young business leaders together for educational, social and charitable events and professional networking. “We just saw a need for developing the future business leaders in our area,” Minsky says. “Many years ago we made our annual City to City trip to Denver, where someone there told us they were actually recruiting people out of Silicon Valley to work in Denver. We realized then we needed to cultivate local talent and keep them in the valley.” Programs for these 20-40-year-olds are far more than just social, Minsky says. The TYP executive series has included insider tours of Adobe, seminars on candidates and issues, and work with Habitat for Humanity. “We want to really engulf them in the culture of San Jose,” Minsky says. – Laura Hill

Santa Clara Valley Medical Center

The Powerhouses of Healing San Jose Silicon Valley Has a Wealth of Health-Care Options San Jose Silicon Valley has plenty of medical choices, with more than a dozen major hospitals. The region also offers unique medical specialties not found in all parts of the country, including several clinics staffed by specialists who are among leaders in their field. General Health-Care Facilities Among the area’s general health-care facilities, the oldest is O’Connor Hospital, which opened in 1889 and was run at the time by four members of the Daughters of Charity. More than 120 years later, O’Connor is still affiliated with the Daughters of Charity Health System and sees approximately 15,000 patients each year. Good Samaritan Hospital offers a variety of specialized services, including a stroke team that is on call 24 hours a day. It was one of the first five hospitals in the U.S. to be certified as a Primary Stroke Center. Good Samaritan has been chosen numerous times by readers of Bay Area Parent magazine as the Bay Area’s Best Place to Have a Baby as well as a Family Favorite Hospital. The nearby Santa Clara Valley Medical Center is a sprawling facility with nearly 600 beds. SCVMC’s programs and services include a burn center, a

rehabilitation center and a women’s and children’s health clinic. It’s also home to the Valley Specialty Center, which offers specialized services in areas such as genetic counseling and a cancer center. The Regional Medical Center of San Jose lists cardiovascular work, neurosciences and cancer care among its specialties. Recently, the hospital underwent major renovations to include an expanded intensive care unit and an additional 77 new private patient rooms. Other hospitals in the area include Kaiser Permanente Medical Center and Kaiser Santa Clara, which offer specialized services such as a sleep-disorder clinic, weight-loss management, spine care and cardiac care, among others. Both the Genetic and Autism Spectrum Disorders regional referral centers are located in Kaiser Permanente, and the hospital holds 242 beds as well as two outpatient medical offices. In Palo-Alto you will find Lucile

Packard Children’s Hospital, which was included in U.S. News’ 2010 list of America’s Best Children’s Hospitals. The hospital is dedicated solely to the treatment of babies, adolescents and expectant mothers and has been internationally recognized for its care. The facility revolves around the idea of family-centered care, which encourages families to work together with their healthcare team. El Camino Hospital holds two campuses in Mountain View and Los Gatos. Specialized services include a cancer center, women’s hospital and neuroscience institute. For a complete list of facilities, visit the City of San Jose website, www.sanjoseca.gov/resident.asp.

Fertility Specialists and Pediatric Care San Jose’s health-care community is also known as one with leading professionals in fertility and pediatric care. The Fertility and Reproductive Health Institute of Northern California is one of the most popular institutions in the field, as its laboratory has received repeated accreditations of excellence by the College of American Pathologists. – Cary Estes and Karen Schwartzman S a n J o s e S i l i c o n Va l l e y

Arts & Culture

Celebrating Diversity A Variety of Offerings showcase City’s Cultural Medley San Jose is an extremely diverse city. Residents speak more than 56 different languages, according to the San Jose Unified School District. That diversity is evident in the city’s variety of cultural offerings, including festivals and theater performances. Theatre

closed for 30 years. The theatre is used for performances by Opera San Jose, Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley, Symphony Silicon Valley and the Cinequest Film Festival, as well as national touring companies.

The Tapestry Festival is just one element of the city’s vibrant arts scene, which is highlighted by the bright blue building containing the San Jose Repertory Theatre. The Rep, as it is known locally, has attracted several famous actors since opening in 1980, including Holly Hunter, Lynne Redgrave, Carol Burnett and Angela Lansbury. Children can join in on the acting through the Saturday afternoon Creative Playshop, a side theater where kids can improvise scenes from the play their parents are watching on the main stage. The stunning California Theatre, built in 1927, was restored and reopened in 2004 after being

feel of the area. If you’re seeking an Asian influence, San Jose has one of the three remaining Japantowns in the U.S. Traditional Japanese food can be found in various shops, restaurants and a farmers market. The store Nichi Bei Bussan has been selling Japanese merchandise such as kimonos since 1902. It is possible to have a good time in San Jose without ever leaving the sofa. In this case, that’s SoFA, as in the South of First Arts area. SoFA is located near San Jose State University. Sports & Recreation

Never a Dull Moment Numerous offerings keep residents entertained

From thrill rides at the California Great America theme park to slap shots at San Jose Sharks hockey games, there is plenty to see and do in San Jose.

Music and More at HP Pavilion Many of the city’s biggest events take place at the beautiful HP Pavilion, a 20,000-seat, multipurpose sports and entertainment facility. In addition to the popular Sharks games, the arena hosts a wide variety of musical acts. During a typical month, the concert lineup at HP might bounce from the Eagles’ classic rock to the modern funk of the Black Eyed Peas to Taylor Swift’s country pop. For information, visit www.hppsj.com.

Parks and Trails With so many warm, sunny days, there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy. You can cool off at the Raging Waters water park or Great America’s Great Barrier Reef Wave Pool. Cyclists can find big air at the Calabazas BMX Park. And there are dozens of parks and hiking trails throughout the region. The primary city park is 156-acre Kelley Park. Features include the Happy Hollow Park & Zoo for children, the peaceful Japanese Friendship Garden, the History Park Museum and the Portuguese Historical Museum. The Japanese Friendship Garden at Kelley Park

The Guadalupe River Trail winds through downtown and is a favorite with cyclists, joggers and people who walk to work. A highlight is the Heritage Rose Garden, where more than 3,000 varieties of roses are on display. The 720-acre Alum Rock Park offers a more rugged outdoor adventure. Located in a canyon on the eastern edge of town, Alum Rock is the oldest municipal park in California and one of the largest, with trails for biking and horseback riding.

Museums and Other Attractions Exhibits at the Children’s Discovery Museum invite guests to go on selfdirected, open-ended explorations. Child magazine ranks the museum as one of the top 10 children’s museums in the nation. And Silicon Valley would not be complete without the Tech Museum of innovation. Highlights at this technological playground include an IMAX theater and 250 exhibits. With more than 4,000 artifacts, the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum & Planetarium houses the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts on display in western North America. The museum’s design was inspired by the Temple of Amon at Karnak and features objects from pre-dynastic times through Egypt’s early Islamic era. – Cary Estes

Coming Soon • Voters recently passed a measure approving the San Francisco 49ers plan to build a stadium in Santa Clara. The 69,000-seat bayside stadium will cost $937 million. • The Oakland A’s are awaiting approval from Major League Baseball to build a stadium in San Jose. Commissioner Bud Selig appointed a committee 18 months ago to research and recommend a Bay Area stadium site for the team. • 360 Architecture has been chosen to design the new stadium for the San Jose Earthquakes. The 18,000-seat stadium will be built near the San Jose International Airport. It’s scheduled to be completed in 2012.

San Jose State University

Top of the Class San Jose State Anchors Wide Variety of Educational Opportunities Providing top-notch educational opportunities has been essential to San Jose and the surrounding Silicon Valley ever since the technology boom of the 1990s began attracting large numbers of college graduates to the region. The education level of the metro area’s workforce is among the highest in the United States. More than half have earned a college degree and approximately two-thirds have some college education. San Jose State University At the center of the educational system and the city itself is San Jose State University. Located on 154 acres in the heart of downtown, SJSU has approximately 30,000 students and 4,000 employees. Founded in 1857, it is the oldest public university on the West Coast, but it has evolved significantly since those early frontier days.

What began as a school designed specifically to train teachers is now a comprehensive research university, with seven colleges that offer a total of 134 degrees. Along with the high-tech fields of engineering and science, SJSU has popular programs in visual arts, nursing, journalism and social sciences. And, of course, the school still preps aspiring teachers for careers in the classroom. In addition to being a longtime

fixture in downtown San Jose, SJSU partnered with the city in an innovative way with the 2003 creation of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library. This eight-story facility is co-managed by the university and the city, making it the first of its kind in the U.S. Because of the joint venture, the library contains nearly 2 million items and draws 7,500 visitors daily.

San Jose City College At San Jose City College on Moorpark Avenue, students may choose from a variety of education options, including two-year college degrees and certificates, specialized career and technology training, lower-division transfer and general education courses. The college also offers training for basic professional skills and English language instruction. The college traces its history back to 1921, and today is part of the San Jose/Evergreen Community College District. The district also includes Evergreen Valley College, and together, these entities serve 950,000 residents within 303 square miles.

Santa clara university More than 8,000 students attend Santa Clara University, a comprehensive Jesuit, Catholic university. Besides undergraduate curricula in the arts and sciences, business and engineering, the school offers master’s, Ph.D. and law degrees. SCU has the fourthhighest graduation rate among all U.S. master’s universities, and it’s also California’s oldest-operating higher education institution.

Other Colleges and Universities Several other smaller universities and colleges are located in San Jose, including the National Hispanic University, which offers a “multicultural education,” the Lincoln Law School and the California University of Management and Technology. West Valley College offers 18

career programs, professional certificates and degree programs. Prestigious Stanford University is located in nearby Palo Alto.

Public and private schools There are 16 public-school districts in San Jose, led by the San Jose Unified School District. The SJUSD consists of 25 elementary schools, six middle schools, two K-8 schools and seven high schools. There are also two alternative school programs (Learning Options and Broadway High School), as well as a college preparatory charter school called Downtown College Prep. Most private schools in San Jose are affiliated with churches. The largest of these is the Catholic Diocese of San Jose, which is second only to SJUSD in terms of the number of students enrolled. – Cary Estes

Local Flavor

Left Bank Brasserie

From Farm to Fork ‘Eat Local’ Movement Sweeps Through the Valley Restaurants in San Jose take the eating local movement to new heights. Several local farms supply the eateries with everything from seafood, to poultry and Angus beef, to organic bread. This commitment pays off for the restaurants – and the diners.

Eat Local At San Jose’s upscale Left Bank Brasserie, diners not only know who cooked their food. They also know who grew it and where. This Santana Row eatery, like a growing multitude of fine restaurants around the country, emphasizes fresh food, locally grown and used at the height of its season. So committed is the restaurant to the “locavore” (eat local) concept that its changing weekly menu lists currently featured in-season items and the nearby farms that grew them. “It’s not hard to make the most delicious food in the world when

32

you’re using ingredients that are the freshest, most flavorful available in their peak seasons,” says Lisa Leventhal, Left Bank manager. “Our chef is very passionate about using local farm-fresh things. He focuses on what he can get fresh that week, or that day, and our menu changes accordingly.”

Santa Cruz (baby salad greens, heirloom tomatoes, melons, potatoes, sweet corn), Bay Bread (organic bread with authentic French-style recipes) and County Line Harvest, Sonoma County, (spicy, flavorful root vegetables and tender lettuces). The restaurant makes its own sausage, terrine and pates in-house from local meats and poultry.

San Jose Silicon Valley Farms on the Menu

Eating Well to Live Well

Among the local growers that supply Left Bank are Bassian Farms (poultry and Angus beef), Cleanfish (safe, sustainable seafood), Happy Boy Farms,

The growing interest in locally grown fruits, vegetables, meats, poultry and seafood is borne of an increased awareness of the role food plays in maintaining good

health, Leventhal says. The use of pesticides and hormones and the eco-unfriendly import of food from faraway farms, which requires huge amounts of fossil fuels, has put food safety in the headlines. “Health is a huge issue in the U.S. People are starting to take a look at what’s going on, and are supporting local food, farmers markets, etc., and looking at what they are putting into their bodies,” Leventhal says. “In the last couple of decades, we have seen such a rise in diseases like cancer and diabetes, that now people are thinking they’ll try to step away from the inside aisles of a supermarket, shop the perimeter and get good food into their kids.”

Farmers Markets in San Jose Silicon Valley Farmers markets (you can find one somewhere in the San Jose area every day of the week, Leventhal says) are one great way to “eat local.” The Downtown Farmers Market at San Pedro Square runs Fridays from May 7 to Dec. 17, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring 35 local suppliers. It even offers “Cookin’ the Market” cooking demonstrations of how to use local produce to turn out delicious, easy and healthy meals. – Laura Hill

The farmers market

La Tartine “BLT” at Left Bank Brasserie

Keeping It Clean In keeping with the city’s philosophy on sustainability, the Downtown Farmers Market is a Zero Waste Event. Vendors use biodegradable bags, and food vendors use compostable serving ware. Shoppers are asked to be a part of the efforts by shopping at the market

with their own reusable bags. Since May, all waste has been sorted to divert the majority to composting or recycling bins and will continue to happen for the rest of the season. Green events and demonstrations are even offered at the market. Every third Friday is

“Green Days at the Market” in which special vendors are on site offering tips on how to live green. The “greening” doesn’t stop there. Shoppers who show their valid VTA Light Rail or Bus pass at the information table earn $1 in “Carrot Cash,” which works like real money at the market.
