18 anos de MONSTRA, à Solta em Lisboa e no Mundo! No ano da maioridade, abrimos a MONSTRA com a antestreia de Early Man (Idade da Pedra) do multipremiado Nick Park. Realizamos uma ampla retrospetiva da animação da Estónia, comemoramos os 50 anos de O Submarino Amarelo, estreamos Gauche, o Violoncelista do mestre Isao Takahata e recebemos os também detentores de Oscar, Kunio Kato e Koji Yamamura. Paul Driessen, um dos “Oscarizados” mais talentosos de sempre faz a estreia na MONSTRA do seu último filme A Origem do Som. As competições de 2018 são compostas por 200 filmes imperdíveis. A MONSTRINHA apresenta nas sessões escolares e Pais e Filhos o melhor da animação mundial para miúdos e graúdos. E, a não perder, as Formações, as Exposições, a Realidade Aumentada, as Conferencias, os Concertos, os programas DokAnim, ClipAnim (curadoria de Filipe Raposo), TerrorAnim e a MONSTRA Triple X. 18 years of MONSTRA – On the Loose in Lisbon and throughout the World! We open MONSTRA, in the year when it becomes an adult, with the premiere of Early Man, directed by multi-award winning Nick Park. We are also conducting a vast retrospective of Estonian animation, celebrating the 50 years of The Yellow Submarine, premiering Gauche the Cellist by the master Isao Takahata, and welcoming the also Oscar-winning Kunio Kato and Koji Yamamura. Paul Driessen, one of the most talented Oscar-winning directors of all time, is also premiering his last film at MONSTRA: The Origin of Sound. 2018’s competitions consist of 200 films that you should not miss. MONSTRINHA presents the best worldwide animation during its school sessions and on the Family Program, aimed at both kids and grown-ups. Besides, there are a lot more of unmissable and imperative elements at the festival: the training sessions, exhibitions, augmented reality, conferences, concerts, the DokAnim programmes, ClipAnim (curated by Filipe Raposo), TerrorAnim, and MONSTRA Triple X. A schedule that is clearly defined by the idea that Art is not only the mirror which reflects the world, but instead the essence for its transformation. Com a sua experiência, Paul consegue categorizar os filmes em secções e distinguir a maneira de pensar em cada uma. Na masterclass irá apresentar secções de alguns dos seus filmes para mostrar a descrepância entre a inspiração original

e o resultado final. One of the questions that animation film creators are asked most often is: “Where do ideas come from?” Paul Driessen, who has already created almost thirty short films, tries to answer this question through a retrospective of his work. Through his experience, Paul is able to categorize the films in sections and identify the thought process behind each of them. His masterclass will present clips of some of his films to show the differences between the original inspiration and the finished product.

A programação do “para além do ecrã” tem como tema este ano a realidade aumentada (RA), com a realização de mesa redonda e demonstrações. A relação do cinema de animação com as novas tecnologias vem desde sempre, a animação é ela própria uma nova tecnologia. Discutir, apresentar e “tocar” a relação da animação com a realidade aumentada é o objetivo desta mesa redonda com especialistas mundiais. Durante o festival o público poderá ainda experimentar os projetos de RA que os participantes no painel irão usar nas demonstrações. From games to cinema, animation is a transversal art to almost all the languages that resort to the moving image. This year, the theme for the “beyond the screen” lineup is augmented reality (AR), including a round table and demonstrations. The relationship between animation cinema

and new technologies has always existed, as animation itself is a new technology. Discussing, presenting and “touching” the relationship between animation and augmented reality is the goal of this panel discussion with world experts. During the festival, the audience will be able to experience the AR projects that panellists will use in the demonstrations.

Desta secção fazem parte filmes de animação realizados por estudantes, uma forma de partilhar e dar a conhecer o que se faz em semelhantes instituições de ensino pelo Mundo. As universidades convidadas são: Estonian Academy of Arts (Estónia), Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg (Alemanha), Tama Art University e Tokyo University of Arts (Japão). With our young moviegoers in mind, the Monstra Festival will host animation sessions at several universities in Lisbon and Caldas da Rainha. This section includes animated films made by students, which will showcase films directed by the most promising young film mavericks across the world. Our guests will be the Estonian Academy of Arts (Estonia), Filmakademie BadenWürttemberg (Germany) Tama Art University and Tokyo University of Arts (Japan).

■■ MONSTRA à Solta MONSTRA On The Loose Este projeto visa partilhar com os públicos que vivem fora da grande Lisboa uma parte importante do festival MONSTRA, permitindo que também eles entrem em contacto com o que de melhor se produz a nível mundial nesta arte. Levamos assim o espaço de diálogo, de troca e de encontro, mas também de experimentação e transgressão, a outras paragens motivando a reflexão sobre outras formas de arte, de culturas e formas de fazer e pensar. This project aims to share an important part of the MONSTRA festival with the audiences outside of Lisbon, allowing them to also interact with the best works on this area produced on a worldwide level.
