From the Interim Leadership Team The school has come a long way since its start in 1988, from a church basement classroom with eleven students and one teacher, to a vibrant school at near capacity with 164 students and thirty faculty and staff. Much has changed since our inception, but one thing has remained constant—the school’s mission: Friends School of Minnesota prepares children to embrace life, learning, and community with hope, skill, understanding, and creativity. We are committed to the Quaker values of peace, justice, simplicity, and integrity.

For so many, Friends School of Minnesota and its mission are what we believe in, celebrate, and hope for. We believe that the experiences our students have at school help them become better citizens and leaders, ultimately making the world a better place. We see proof of this in our alumni, who bring us story after story of how they live our mission in the next steps of their lives, and how the core values of their FSM education have helped to shape them as they become adults. And our alumni are now starting to send us their children. As we navigate through these tumultuous times, we are grateful that our little Friends school can and does have such a big impact on how our students become active participants in the world around them. As we reflect on the 2015-16 school year, here are some of the highlights. • Accreditation Self-Study. As a progressive, Quaker school we aspire to practice self-reflection continuously. Last year we engaged in an ISACS accreditation self-study with our faculty, staff, school committee members, students, alumni, and current parents to examine all aspects of our school and tell our school’s story. This process provided us with the time and space to reflect deeply in a systematic and comprehensive way, producing a rich document that identified our strengths and challenges and our collective future work. • Dynamic Classroom Furniture. As part of our annual gala, we have conducted several successful Fund-a-Project campaigns. In 2015-16, we raised nearly $17,000 for dynamic and active classroom furniture. Generous donor support enabled us to purchase “sit to stand” tables for both humanities classrooms, new science/math tables, and new seating for three additional classrooms. • Plant Sale. We had another record year at our annual Friends School Plant Sale. We increased our sales by nearly five percent and brought in net revenue and donations of almost $366,000, quite an accomplishment for a school of our size. We couldn’t have done it without the support of more than 1,200 sale-week volunteers and thirty year-round core volunteers who serve on our buying and planning committees. • Leadership Transition. It has been our privilege, these past six months to serve as a co-interim leadership team. As we welcome Joe McHugh, our new interim head of school, we are confident that he will help guide FSM, as we work to hire a new permanent head of school. Latrisha Chattin, Head of School

From the School Committee It was an honor to serve Friends School of Minnesota as clerk of the school committee. This deep dive into school governance provided me with a unique and relatively rare window into the history, mission, operations, and leadership of the school. What I observed through that window made me grateful to the founders, families, faculty, Quakers, and friends who have invested themselves and their resources in the school and provided unwavering support. It made me immensely proud of the amazing educational and co-curricular programs we offer at FSM. And, it made me hopeful for the future of our society. We nurture children’s minds, bodies, and spirits. We guide students toward deep understanding of who they are, how the world works, and how they can contribute to it. We graduate students who are competent, caring, passionate, centered, and articulate who will—and already do—make a difference in our community. The 2015-16 school year was one of transition and growth. Under the leadership of Latrisha Chattin, we advanced our thinking and our practices that contribute to a welcoming, just, and diverse

school. We also made strides addressing the needs of students with learning differences, and understanding our capacity to serve all students. We have more work to do, but we are grateful for the expertise and guidance Latrisha brought to both efforts during her year at FSM. As we continue our work with our new interim head, Joe McHugh, and look forward to welcoming a permanent head in the future, we are well positioned for further growth in these areas. Whether you are a parent, teacher, staff member, student, graduate, Quaker, or other champion of the school, you contribute to a learning environment that fosters the healthy development of children with diverse talents, skills, and personalities. I hope that you will continue to support this important work by renewing your support for the 2016-17 Annual Fund. The fund provides for need-based scholarship assistance, professional development opportunities, and extending activities beyond the classroom. I invite you to read this annual report to learn more about the many ways Friends School of Minnesota makes a difference in the lives of children, and the importance of your support in those efforts.

2015-16 Collins-Fieldseth Award for Exceptional Volunteerism Created in 2002, the Collins-Fieldseth Award for Exceptional Volunteerism is given annually to individuals who have longevity in volunteerism and dedication to the school, and who make a significant contribution through volunteering at FSM. It is a yearly reminder of the importance of volunteering to the life of the school.

The two individuals chosen this year highlight the commitment our volunteers make to the school community.

is receiving this award for the countless ways she has given to the FSM community. From serving on the committee on trustees and the plant sale committee; to being a room parent, chaperoning field trips and reading to the children; to hosting community celebrations. She is a shining example of the most beautiful parts of this community! We thank Joy for the hours and hours of time she has given to enhance and uplift FSM! JOY SWANS O N

is receiving this award for the countless hours she gives to ensure the success of the Friends School Plant Sale. She serves year-round on the buying committee, the organizing committee, and several sub-committees. New Endowment for FSM Environmental Education Environmental education at Friends School of Minnesota seeks to prepare students to become citizens and stewards of the earth. Whether a weeklong trip to Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center, a nature walk in the park, or the daily collection of school compost, environmental education is woven throughout FSM’s K-8 experience. In 2015, the school received a significant donation to start an endowment for our environmental education program, specifically to support student activities and engagement in environmental education. The donor shared, “My child has benefited immensely from this education, as have we as a family. The environmental education committee has made a compelling case for how this education is uniquely situated at FSM and serves as a model for other local and not-local institutions.” The anonymous endowment gift of $25,000 will help ensure that our environmental education program remains strong, that every student is able to attend overnights in the wilderness, that fieldtrips are possible, that busses remain operational, and that students can continue to access the environment in ways that inspire and educate.

“In the end we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand; and we will understand only what we are taught.” B A B A D IO U M, 1 9 6 8

Circle of Friends Society The Friends School of Minnesota is fortunate to have a society of founders, faculty, alumni/ae parents, current parents, grandparents, and Friends who have included us in their estate plans. We are deeply grateful to these individuals for their profound generosity and investment in the Friends School of Minnesota. Their gifts benefit the school in significant and enduring ways. If you’ve included the Friends School of Minnesota in your planning and your name is not on this list, please let us know by calling Jennifer Bratulich at 651-6218936 or development@fsmn.org. It takes just a few simple steps to make a bequest or charitable annuity to the Friends School of Minnesota.

TO M AKE A BE Q UE S T

Outright bequests in your will are the most straightforward way to leave a planned gift to Friends School of Minnesota. Consider using the following same bequest language: “I give and bequeath the sum of $XX (or XX% of my residuary estate) to Friends School of Minnesota, a non-profit corporation, located at 1365 Englewood Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55104.” Bequests to the school are free of state and federal taxes and qualify your estate for a charitable deduction equal to the entire amount of the bequest. CHARITABLE GIF T ANNUI T Y

You may also make a charitable gift annuity to support the Friends School of Minnesota. A charitable gift annuity allows you to make a significant gift to the Friends School of Minnesota, receive a charitable deduction for a portion of your gift, and retain a stream of fixed income for life, among other benefits.
