An Introduction

Lately I’ve been reading stories where the designer says they knew exactly what a project should be from the beginning. This has never been true for me. How could it? At the be ginning, I don’t know you yet. Or maybe I do–we have many wonderful repeat clients–but I don’t know you yet here. I don’t know you yet now. Our tastes evolve and more so, our needs. Every new home presents its own context that requires thoughtful examination.

And in any case, I don’t know the house yet. Every home has infinite possibilities for decorating, but the projects we take on are a particular alchemy of you and the place you have chosen

to call home, all filtered through our particular lens. It’s a conversation. A collaboration. It is an interactive process that evolves as we learn, through dialogue, presentation, and observation, what you love (and, as importantly, what you dislike, and why.)

IT’S A CONVERSATION. A COLLABORATION. AN INTERACTIVE PROCESS...

Your house itself might perfectly align with your tastes and your lifestyle, but it probably doesn’t. It might be more formal than you, and we will need to bring in ease; it might be new, while you prefer old homes, and we will need to give it the soul of history. It is in mak ing sense of these incongruities that the magic happens.

The best projects–like the four case studies shared here–do, in the end, almost feel inevitable, as if the vision was determined at the start. Developed in such a way that in the end they do feel inevitable, yet countless design choices, big and small, were honed along the way to get us there.

I don’t believe in giving you exactly what you imagined. If we do, we have failed. We aim to give you something you never could have imagined, but that feels just like you nonetheless. It’s you, but beyond.

The eye needs a place to rest and rooms need space to breathe. We plan focal points and blank space before we source any specific items.

We pay close attention to the balance of opposites: round and straight; hard and soft; edgy and traditional. Everything is more itself when placed next to its opposite.
