Church historians believe that in AD 100 there were as few as 25,000 followers of Jesus. Yet by AD 310 there were 20,000,000, an astonishing rate of growth rarely seen in the 17 centuries since. A more recent and similarly remarkable experience happened in China when Mao Tse-tung sought to remove all trace of religion from Chinese society. All Western missionaries and ministers were forced to leave, Chinese church leaders were imprisoned or killed, and church property was nationalized. Rather than declining, the underground church flourished-- growing from 2,000,000 followers of Christ to 60,000,000 after the Cultural Revolution ended!

WESTWOOD COMMUNITY CHURCH
The Methodist movement in early American history is a similar “Kaboom” movement of God as church historian Alan Hirsch has come to call these periods of exponential expansion of the Gospel. What do these “Kaboom” movements have in common? They invited people to make Jesus the Lord of their lives, they grew these new Christians up in faith, and they released them to invite more people into a relationship with Christ; 1 follower became two, then four, then eight and exponential growth occurred. While there are places in the world today where Christianity is spreading rapidly, it is on the decline in much of Europe and North America. Believing that Jesus is the answer to present and eternal human needs in all ages and in all places, Westwood is joining thousands of churches across the country with a renewed focus on multiplying; boldly inviting people into a relationship with Jesus Christ, patiently growing them up in their faith, and creating new church settings where this process can be repeated. While spreading Jesus’s love to people has always been our purpose and mission we are embracing the concept of exponential multiplication; developing disciples that develop disciples, and creating church environments that create church environments.

WESTWOOD COMMUNITY CHURCH
In 1995, Westwood Community Church came into being, meeting in the unconventional but familiar location of the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre. Westwood was started as an effort by Wooddale Church in Eden Prairie to reach into surrounding communities; Westwood was the third of what would become 8
Multiplying is in our DNA! Wooddale daughter churches in the Twin Cities.
Westwood has carried on that church planting tradition, starting Emmaus Road Church in our tenth year and Westbrook Community Church in our 15th year. In 2016 we changed strategies slightly by launching a multisite campus in Minnetonka. Our 10-year vision includes major multisite campus
launches every other year; one more to the east of our Chanhassen campus and three regions west of us.
We’ll multiply environments where people can respond to God’s love and grow in their relationship with Him. We’ll take the church to where people live and work and where their children go to school. And we’ll invite them to join us in being the hands and feet of Jesus to bless the community in which they live. These multisite campuses will develop disciples and leaders; some of which will help launch the next site, which
Even as we’re adding Westwood campuses in our region of the Twin Cities, we’ll also help start independent churches for the nearly 1,000,000 immigrant and ethnic people in the Twin Cities, a significantly under-churched population. See page __
We’ll join in exciting church planting work that is being done in the 41% of the world that still doesn’t have access to the Gospel. See page __

TH E POWER OF N E W Believing that God is “doing a new thing through the multisite church movement of the last couple of decades, Westwood Community Church has adjusted both our master plan and our ministry model. The Westwood master plan had called for building a 2,000-seat worship center on our Chanhassen campus but, at this time, church leadership believes it is both more impactful, and is better stewardship, to expand into adjoining communities with campuses, rather than developing one site that draws people from ever-greater distances. Our staffing and ministry model is being adjusted to support as network of regional campuses. There are compelling reasons to launch additional campuses:

The Twin Cities is now one of the most ethnically diverse areas in the country, indeed the world has come to our doorstep. There are very few churches serving these people, many of whom are refugees far from home.

We’re partnering with our own Sammy Wanyonyi (Shine Ministries) as well as Transform Minnesota and other organizations and churches to serve immigrant communities with the love of Christ. Through evangelism teams and outreach festivals, we’ll bring individuals to Jesus and help them mature in the Christian faith. In turn they will reach others. We’ll help start Christ-centered, independent churches to serve these communities, starting with an Indian church in Eden Prairie in 2018. Our goal is to start 10 new immigrant churches by 2025. Potential groups include Ethiopian, Somali, Chinese, Indian, Hmong and Karen

WESTWOOD COMMUNITY CHURCH
The 10 year vision excites me because it will give every individual who walks through Westwood’s doors opportunities to take on new leadership. I believe it will allow our church to use the gifts and talents that God has given us in greater measure; all to reach people with the love of Jesus Christ! Kevin Klingbiel When I was first interviewing at Westwood in 2004, what captured my heart was our purpose statement: To honor God by enjoying him through reaching people with the love of Jesus Christ. What captures me about this 10-year vision is that we are exploding into the next chapter of living out this purpose. It’s all about reaching people with the love of Jesus Christ. Brian Suter I’m incredibly excited about the 10-year vision because part of it is the intern and residency program! With the intern and residency program we are going to be intentionally developing the young leaders of the church that will lead well beyond this 10-year vision… and that’s so incredible to think about! Jill Fox The overall vision to me shows us a natural progression, through sanctification and obedience, of living out the teachings of the Abrahamic Covenant, the Great Commission and Great Commandment – all of which are at the core of our very existence as Christ followers. Scott Sturm
