HISTORY VI Marketing and Branding, less commonly known as Visual Image Media Consultants, was started in 1989 when Tim

Berney realized that the media-buying firm he was working

for was going belly-up. Tim started Visual Image (VI) with the

clients of this firm and has created a landslide of success since then. Just a few years later Tim was joined by Steve Sturges, and the two have made advertising gold with their team of creative minds, account executives, and their superb taste in interns.

Currently, the agency employs carries several big-league clients, such as Enable Midstream, Tobacco Settlement

Endowment Trust (TSET) and Bob Moore Kia, amoung others.

WORK ENVIRONMENT Even at first glance, or first GD2 tour, VI seems like a really rad place to work. It’s a professional environment, but also one

that allows creativity to flourish, such as using the white board behind one’s desk to decorate. (see fig 1)

1

fig. 1

Between the use of dry erase markers, magnets, and some sweet illustration skills my desk being pushed up against a wall wasn’t half bad. And several clients complimented me on my “office”.

JOB DUTIES During my time at VI I was expected to attend daily status

meetings, rarely make coffee (something I learned I was not good at), and share my workspace with creatives who were brainstorming.

When working on jobs I was also expected to assist the graphic designers and web developers with the following: • • • • •

Production

Resizing advertisements, such as: billboards, magazine ads, and television ads Photoshopping

Creating elements for social media (i.e. Twitter and Facebook) for clients and VI

Occasionally brainstorm with copywriters, account executives, and creatives

NOT JOB DUTIES There were a few things that I was not expected to do, but was fortunate enough to do anyway: •

Attend birthday parties and “after work” events

Go to lunch with friends everyday

3

Drink free coffee everyday, excessively (see fig 2)

CAMP CONQUEST On one of my first days at VI I was given the privilege of rebranding a special-needs Christian camp located in Cordova, Tennessee.

For this task I spoke via phone with the client, Mark, supervised by VI employees Jennifer Blevins and Robbie Repola. This job

included creating a new logo, business cards, letterhead, a gate-

fold presentation folder, and numerous handouts for the sponsors, volunteers, campers and parents. This job spanned the entire

length of my internship, and gave a lot of real world experience.

fig. 2

Free coffee was a super great perk of interning at VI. I didn’t have to spend $5 on starbucks everyday, and I didn’t have to get up early to go get said coffee. Win-win situation.

WHAT I’VE LEARNED LESSON ONE: GRADIENTS ARE NOT THE DEVIL

Probably the biggest lessons that I have learned is that gradients and drop shadows are not the worst thing in the world. When used correctly they can add a lot of depth to something that would typically be flat, and when used sparingly they can make stuff look pretty legit and professional.

LESSON TWO: KERN, KERN, KERN

My second lesson was learning to make sure I didn’t overlook the kerning of my typography. I got called out several times on my kerning, which was super necessary. I’ve gotten better about seeing and looking for blatant kerning fax-pas, but it’s still my biggest struggle when designing.

LESSON THREE: SOCIAL MEDIA HAS A LOT OF DUMB RULES

When working on a job for Shape Your Future I got to create JPEGs for facebook and twitter. I thought it would be super easy, but then I learned that in order

to be able to promote the post only a certain percent of the image could be text, and even then it had to be placed in a specific grid, and then you had to add the logo, and make the image, and do this and that and so-on and so-forth. It was a lot more than I expected to have to think about for just one small facebook image. (see fig 3)

fig. 3

Kiss tobacco

goodbye.

5

Show the puppy

some love.

LESSON FOUR: YOUR SKETCHBOOK SAYS A LOT ABOUT YOU What you write in your sketchbook, i.e. notes about how something looks like

something else, how your idea is dumb, notes about how what you have drawn creeps you out terribly, sketches of random doodle people, etc. will not stay private. Someone will think they’re funny and then share and laugh at your sketches/notes. In the end, you will (mostly) think it’s funny too, but also a little embarrassing...

LESSON FIVE: CLIENTS CAN MAKE NO SENSE

Sometimes clients know what they want, sometimes they don’t. Sometimes they’re worried about the logo being too large/prevalent, but in the next sentence ask you to make it larger. You just have to roll with the requests, as weird as they may be, try to direct them in the right direction, and hope for the best that they listen. You may be the expert, but they’re the one paying you.

LESSON SIX: BEER PONG CREATES COMPETITION, WHILE FLIP CUP CREATES CAMARADERIE

While here, I’ve gotten to join in on birthday parties, bridal showers, a

“marketing madness” party, event openings and a ton of other super fun events. What I’ve learned, besides how prevalent drinking is outside of college in this industry, is that people like to participate and work together to create great experiences. Games like Beer Pong allow the chance for some friendly competition against a co-worker and some fantastic smack-talking. The same goes for games like Flip Cup, but the team aspect of the game seems to make it less serious, and more about congratulating everyone on how well they can drink and then flip a cup. These experiences build friendships and can create great constructive environments for employees.

LESSON SEVEN: NOT EVERYONE GETS TO JOIN THE PARTY

The sad part about joining the party is realizing that not everyone gets to join. Work comes first, so when deadlines are near you have to skip the fun stuff to finish the real-life, client tending stuff.

LESSON EIGHT: BRING YOUR OWN HEADPHONES Music makes working so much easier. End of story.

EVALUATION I’ve really enjoyed working here, which should be obvious due to the fact that I’ve stayed over a month longer than required. I’ve gotten some good practice, learned advertising isn’t as

terrible as Ad Design class made me think it would be, and I’ve made some really good memories that I wouldn’t have had the chance to otherwise. (see fig 4)

APPROVAL OF REPORT I approve this report and acknowledge that Joanna Meachum has completed 160 hours of work towards her internship at

Visual Imaging Marketing and Branding to complete her credit for class.
