Congratulations Fairfield — 375! As the town celebrates Fairfield’s 375th anniversary, we reflect on the Library’s part in its history. The opening of the Fairfield Memorial Library, forerunner of the public library, was held on December 27, 1876 at the library quarters in the Fairfield Academy building. A borrower was permitted to take one book at a time during library hours: Wednesday and Saturday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. The library owned 677 volumes. On June 4, 1903, a new library building, situated on the corner of the Post Road and Old Post Road, was dedicated. This two-story colonial was designed so that it could be added to in future years. In 1950 the Library became a town department and the name changed to the Fairfield Public Library. Additions to the building were completed in 1930, 1959, 1981 and 2005, proving the farsightedness of our founders. Demand for an additional Library location was clear after Stratfield residents established libraries in the Stratfield School and the Stratfield Firehouse starting in the mid-30’s. In 1956, the Library opened a branch at one end of Andrew Warde High School’s library, and then, in 1969, the Fairfield Woods Branch Library was opened. The Fairfield Woods Branch Library continues to be a dynamic neighborhood library, the busiest branch library in the state.

2 :: FAIRFIELD PUBLIC LIBRARY

Today the Library owns over 276,000 volumes and over 41,000 non-print items for lending. Between the two locations, the Library is available to patrons 69 hours per week. In addition, 24/7 access from our website to downloadable books, magazines and music; 30 premium databases; and the online catalog allow residents to use Library services whenever they want wherever they may be. The Fairfield Public Library of the 21st century is well-situated to respond to the evolving needs of our residents. Over the past five years we have extended our services to support job seekers, potential business owners, Medicare enrollees and those seeking help with the new health care changes. We have also served as a vital destination for residents during the extreme weather events of recent years. Our 19th century founders put the Library in the heart of downtown Fairfield, where it continues to respond, along with the Fairfield Woods Branch, to the pulse of our community. The Library provides quality resources, programs and services for all ages as we continue to make history together.

Librarians and writers have always shared a special relationship. We see writers working away at tables quietly. We find them wonderful resources. We help to connect them with mentors to help them with the writing process. And we celebrate their successes with author talks and book launches. The Fairfield Public Library has a variety of services we offer writers. We have a beautiful “Writers’ Room” where writers can gather and discuss their works and/ or write together. All you need to do is reserve the room by calling the Main Library Reference Desk 203-256-3160 and then leave a piece of identification with the desk while you use the room. The first Friday of each month from 4:00–6:00 pm, writers gather for a Writers’ Salon and share their stories about the writing process and their works. Writers Group Leaders Alex and Donna start the discussion and encourage all to join in. Sometimes we are fortunate enough to have a visiting writer lead the conversation. A small collection of books on writing is available for loan from the Writers’ Room. This room was beautifully enhanced thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Fairfield Public Library.

Writers’ Groups The Library hosts six writers’ groups that meet regularly. Volunteers lead these popular groups. We keep the size to one that promotes active participation and positive support. The number of members tends to fluctuate. If you are interested in joining a group please contact Karen at kronald@fplct.org. And yet each year, despite our own skepticism, the incredibly dedicated and hard-reading One Book One Town Committee picks another amazing book. Join us again as we read together.

WINTER/SPRING 2014 PROGRAMS :: 23

One Book One Town 2014 Ms. Lindhout was a world traveler, adventurer and fledgling journalist not easily intimidated by danger. She had covered the war in Afghanistan and Iraq, and in an attempt to raise her career profile, she headed to Somalia with friend and photojournalist, Nigel Brennan. However, within four days of their arrival in Somalia, they were captured and held hostage by Islamist insurgents for a harrowing fifteen months. What is remarkable about this memoir is its redemptive quality, largely because of Lindhout’s ability to look back on her incredible and frightening experience without rancor. At her most desperate moments in captivity she relies on cherished memories to survive, visiting a house in the sky, high above the woman kept in chains in the dark.
