HISTORY Currently located within the center precinct of the Parkville campus, the concrete lawn used to be occupied by the University Lake, which was an outstanding feature of the campus up until it was decided to be removed 1 Originally a swamp during Pre-Colonial settlement2, it was converted into a lake during the construction of the University campus. It served as a prominent feature to the landscape of the campus until it had to be filled to make space for newer University buildingsdue to the lack of space available.
Combined maps of 1896 and 19194
Combined maps of 1896 and 19385
The filling of the swamp allowed for the new buildings (Chemistry and Old Commerce) to be built as well as the construction of the Concrete Lawn which now serves as a major gathering space3 for social activities. Figures 1-4 depicts the maps of varying years (1919, 1938 & 1985) superimposed onto the map of 1896 for easy visual representation and comparison of how much have changed on site.
