PROBLEM STATEMENT How can kids be more efficient in trash disposal and cleaning up after themselves in the back seat of a minivan?

Minivan

Design in mind for the user of both boys and girls from the ages of five to eight. Parents’ needs are taken into consideration because they are the purchaser. Kids tend to make a mess in the backseat of vehicles and make more work for parents.

RESEARCH “If you have to follow up and clean up a little after them, don’t let them see you do it. It’s the fact that they’re contributing that’s important, not that they do it just as well as you would.” - Wendy Young, Michigan social worker, children’s counselor.

RISKS Health problems Personal safety Environment Other’s well-being

Kids have no sense of responsibility for their own chores. Parents tend to spoil kids by picking up after their children or giving them commands to do chores instead of giving them motivation.

Based on a survey: Kids spend an average of 14 hours a week in a minivan

Observations Methods to get your kids to clean

I usually tell her that mom and dad will be sad if she does not clean up after herself. If not then we try to tempt her to do as we say with some kind of reward like candy.

About the user

She hates to clean up when we tell her to but she knows when to clean up at school. I wish she could learn to do the same at her own home.

Expectations for an ideal product

Andy Chen + Alice Chen

Anything that would make her learn to clean up after herself. She needs motivation or a goal in order for her to choose to do something herself.

Observations

The pocket behind the front seat is often an area abused to temporarily place trash in. Certain trash that leaves odors can linger through certain types of fabrics. Alice has a hard time reaching behind the pocket of the front seat to place trash. She would have to release or loosen her seat belt in order to place trash there which is not safe. An area that is convenient for a child like Alice to place trash is the armrest. It is close to her and close to the door for parents to empty ideal trash can.

MAIN PROBLEM

BASIC KNOWLEDGE GUIDANCE

Kids do not like to clean up after themselves.

- No amusement - No sense of play - Consider a chore - No excitement

- Not important - Direction - No understanding - No guide of cleanliness - Confusing use - No Knowledge - Opening of trash - Too young to can understand

- Hide in the side - Lack responsibility - Easy access - Parents do it - Right next to them - Don’t understand - Booster seat consequences placed near sides - Too young of seats

FLOW REINFORCEMENT

Is the zone that is value of play or fun to increase efficiency in a task. The flow brings in equal balance of a challenging task that is still engaging but still encourages enough skill to be captivating.

Adding a PLAY VALUE would transform a chore into a more desired task. It changes the quality of mind that would ultimately increase efficiency in throwing trash away. The “Clean-Up” song is a known play value stimulus that can transforms the cleaning task into a game. The challenge and skill level is enough to evoke competition to try to clean up before the song ends. By designing the task of trash disposal into a more playful manner it would be a more avid manner for kids.

Currently in the market there are no vehicle trashcans Low Play designed in mind for children. There are trashcans for vehicles but they are not kid friendlyValue or durable. Most trashcans designed for kids are made to look like a kid friendly product but not many of them engage in a higher play value activity.

Low Play Value

There is an opportunity to design an efficient trashcan that is able to hold a reasonable amount of trash but can be small enough to fit inside a mini-van.

DESIGN considerations CONSIDERATION Design PHYSICAL DESIGN

Versatile in space to be convenient for the user to use but still have enough room to take in trash. Easy opening to put in trash but does not harbor stench from trash.

PLACEMENT

Concept considers different places in the minivan to be easy for both the kids and parents. Easy to reach for kids and parents to quickly change.

FUN FACTOR

The trash can should have some concept that adds a sense of play to a manner that is normally considered to be a chore. Fun factor is to help kids engage with trash disposal and increase efficiency.

IDEAL A garbage can that increases efficiency and cleanliness in the back seat of a minivan.

Children from this age are advised to be seated in booster seats, so seat height is taken into consideration as well as the measurements of their hands.

Function Musical Feature Based on the fun factor research, designing the task of trash disposal into a more playful manner would increase productivity. If the trashcan could play the clean up song based on the scheduled lifestyle of the child it can become an efficient sign to clean up.

Mechanism

Parents are able to set the timing of when the song plays everyday or week. There is a metal needle with an embossed disk that plays the “Clean-Up song and is amplified with inner speakers.

Fun Features Individualize Child can customize their trash can with their own vinyl stickers. Stickers can add character to an inanimate object and allow the child to grow a sense of attachment which would increase there awareness of the product. Stickers are removable and reusable. They are meant to prevent kids from losing interest.

Story She woke up late and her parents rushed to dress her up for school. She didn’t want to skip breakfast so her mother grabbed her a cereal bar and apple. She rushed to finish her cereal bar as her mother was about to pull up towards the school parking lot. When she was about to jump off her seat, she heard a song starting to play besides her. She grabbed her cereal bar wrapper and threw it into the trash can in a swoosh. A couple hours later, her mother came to pick her up after school. Her mother sided open the side of the mini-van, a quirky bright-faced trashcan greeted her on the other side. It played a sweet melody welcoming her back from school. She smiled back to the friendly face and fed the trashcan with some scraps of paper she had in her pocket. Once they arrived home, she reminded her mother to empty the trashcan. The mother took the trash bag out from the trashcan in a snap and looked back at her daughter. Her mother smiled and thanked her for being a big girl. The mother rewarded her with a new sticker and she stuck it on the trashcan. Both the mother and daughter smiled. The girl looked back and waved goodbye to the little trashcan.
