Sadly last month Australia lost a true “great” with the passing of Olympic champion swimmer M
I never saw him race, but my father always said of Murray Rose that he was a great athlete and his sport. With four gold medals from 2 Olympics, Melbourne in 1956 and Rome in 1960, Rose t Olympic medals overall (4 gold, 1 Silver, 1 Bronze) and was a world record in the 400m, 800m events. Rose’s contribution to sport continued long after he retired through his involvement with t Club charity, which teaches disabled children how to swim.
It wasn’t just what he achieved, but the way he did it, and I have never heard a bad word uttered Dawn Fraser I think summed up the man perfectly in her eulogy at his funeral. “To me personally, true friend and a great team-mate... The master of cool. The only guy to go through life and not ca but certainly make enormous waves.”
Murray Rose was a pioneer in his sport who inspired many future Australian swimming champion Olympic ideals and by all accounts was a great bloke. Rest in peace. 2

Looking back, I first got drawn into playing and working in sport because I love to be inspired. Great Olympic feats; the courage and skill in Rugby League and Union; inspirational bowling spells and courageous batting under fire in cricket, all made the hair on the back of my neck stand. Nothing has changed! I received a message from one of our favourite contributors Eloise Wellings recently apologising for not getting her article in because she was too busy chasing Olympic qualifying times and training in the US. Then I learned she was running up snow covered mountains in freezing temperatures at altitude for training. Try it, it’s bloody hard! That’s just the type of inspiring effort that we love at Jock Athletic. Keep the great work up El, you deserve everything you get! Welcome to another great month in sport and sports conditioning!

I found this extremely bold and I hate saying this but I almost found this unrealistic. Well 3 years on I still believe this to be a very bold statement and one I have heard has changed direction in the last 6 months. Australia’s focus now is on acquiring the allotted 3 men and 3 women to put their best foot forward to race. Our first priority, as I see it, is to have all our athletes fit and healthy both physically and mentally. I’ve taken the time to look over the course and also the key players I see as the ones who can make a difference in race.
THE COURSE All set in and around London’s famous Hyde Park:
THE SWIM 1 lap fresh water chances of wetsuit very high, so will suit the slower swimmers. Swim will be swum anti clock wise. Watch for the Russians to set the pace alight and go from start to finish. If a Russian medals it will be set up in the swim / bike then it will set him and his family up for life!!! Their desperation when they race is something to be seen!!!

THE BIKE 7 laps of 6.37km total distance 43km: the reason I am lead to believe for the unusual distance is so the course takes in the iconic London landmarks. Technical at stages, there is good little loop and I would expect some attacks either around the 3rd lap or if the Russians have a good team of committed riders around them from the start, then around Buckingham palace where I see a huge amount of spectators. It’s completely flat and will be very fast! Athletes will need to be very technically ready to go and have a huge amount of intensity in their training in the lead up. • Aussie’s will not feature (not because we aren’t good enough) in the bike and will hide where possible, unless a power athlete is selected to look after the medal chances. • Men: Russians, Germans will have a very committed team and the English of course with the Brownlees. • Women: Spirig will have a great team of Swiss girls working hard for her and those girls can “Bomb” on the bike! The USA girls as well will dominate. Our girls need to be very much in the thick of it watching for everything, sitting mid to front of each pack not the back. Snowsill (if selected) will be ready to go so the rest will want to get away from the best female runner in the world.
THE RUN
MEN Will be 4 laps of 2.5km in and around the Serpentine and great viewing for the spectators. The 1st km of men’s run will be at about 2.40- 2.45 pace guaranteed. So T2 will be crucial. Then they will settle into a 2.55 pace for the next 1.5km after the dead turn after lap 1. Near the finish they will explode out of the turn and race for the podium. In the men I expect to see a solid group up front chasing down some lunatic who went off the front. They will catch them after 1.5km. The group will consist of both Brownlees, Hauss, Vidal and approximately 2-3 Germans and looking at each other, coming up charging through the field will be Whitfield. But Simon will take a little bit longer to wind up!
WOMEN Similar to the men the girls will go out hard. So far the girls selected are good top end speed athletes. Hewitt (New Zealand), who will have the pressure of her nation on her shoulders, will lead the way so I expect her to go out hard to try and disrupt the Aussie girls on race day. Any of our girls, whoever picked, will be some of the better runners. I see less games being played with girls and again, if picked, Snowsill will be at her best and is about a minute (on her day) better than any other girl! So the ladies race will be very interesting and there is a lot more dark horses in this field.

DISTANCE RUNNING ON THE TRACK WAS OFTEN CONSIDERED THE CEREBRAL SECTION OF ATHLETICS. WHILE THE SPRINTERS SIMPLY RAN AS FAST AS THEY COULD IN THE DEFINED CONFINES OF THEIR LANES, THE DISTANCE ATHLETES HAD TO NEGOTIATE PACKS OF RUNNERS, AVOID FALLING OVER OR BEING TRIPPED, AVOID GETTING CAUGHT UP IN A POCKET AND THEN TIMING THEIR SPRINT HOME TO HOPEFULLY PLACE THEM IN THE PREMIER POSITION AT THE END OF THE EVENT.
(This view of cerebral athletes is certainly not one suggested by Jock Campbell or myself as we were both sprinters and felt that anyone who ran further than 200m had to have rocks in their head!) Tactical running is still the feature of distance events at the major championships like the World Champs and Olympic Games and more often than not the winning times at these major championships is a long way off the reigning world record or season’s best time. But the overwhelming aim of the athletes at these Championships is winning the coveted gold medal. The time is immaterial.

SO WHY THE PROLIFERATION OF PACE MAKING IN DISTANCE EVENTS NOW?
Over the past editions of the eZine I’ve talked about the London Games and the criteria for gaining the Holy Grail of becoming an Olympian. The current crop of Olympic aspirants have to better a selection qualifying time, so the emphasis in their races is on the time rather than the position in the race. Winning the National Championship won’t in itself get you an Olympic blazer, but beating the selection standard will certainly assist to achieve that all-important Olympic berth. But it’s not just championship selection which is driving this obsession with times in distance running. Two of Kenya’s track team, World Record holder and 800m World Champion David Rudisha and 1500m Olympic Gold medallist Asbel Kiprop were recently in Australia to compete in the Australian Track Series. Included in their respective support teams were their training partners who also acted as their pace makers for their races here in Australia. These pace makers also perform this role for their more illustrious training partners in international meets as well.

The pacemakers focus on the desired lap split times, they act as a wind break for the more fancied runners and by maintaining a quick early pace, the racing becomes safer as there is less chance for runners to be tripped up as the field is normally in single file almost immediately from the start of the race. Basically all the premier runners need to do is cruise along, watching the back of the pacemaker in front of them, conserving valuable energy so that when it is “show-time” at the back end of the race, they are ready to perform.
PACE MAKING ALLOWS THE LEADING ATHLETES TO RELAX. THEY CAN BASICALLY SWITCH OFF MENTALLY IN THE EARLY SECTIONS OF THE RACE AND ALLOW THEIR PACEMAKERS TO DO ALL THE HARD WORK.
Pacemakers have to be great runners in their own right. They have an inbuilt clock that enables them to run within a few tenths of a second each lap and they have to be able to lead out against the best runners in the world. The major meet promoters and leading athletes meet before the races at the Diamond League to discuss the lap paces required. The European promoters and the crowds at these meets are obsessed with world records. Promoting a world record attempt increases the number of spectators and television coverage which generates additional revenue for the promoters. So once a pace has been

agreed upon it is up to the pacemaker to execute that time. Too fast or too slow means that the pacemaker won’t be asked back and many athletes are making a good living on the Diamond League and other circuits as full time pacemakers. Pacemakers are the equivalent of basketball’s Washington Generals who always play the Harlem Globetrotters – they will never win a race while they are pacemaking. Being able to develop an innate ability to run to pace is easily developed over time by simply running lots of intervals. Even I could run rep 200m or 300m intervals and know that I could hit the required time for each rep within a tenth of a second or two.
PACE MAKERS: NOT JUST LIMITED TO THE TRACK Pacemaking has been compared to the support team riders provide to their lead riders in road cycling. British rider Mark Cavendish, who has 20 stage wins of the Tour de France under his belt and is the winner of the Tour’s Green Jersey, owes much of his success to Australian cyclist Mark Renshaw who is considered as one of the best lead-out men in the world. In all of Cavendish’s recent stage wins it is Renshaw

who leads Cavendish home through the traffic of the final segments of the stage only to pull over at the last minute to allow Cavendish to “sling shot” through to take the stage wins. Road races often have pacemakers and now it’s prolific in marathon events and this is driven by the structure of the prize money set aside for the runners.
TAKE THE LONDON MARATHON AS AN EXAMPLE. PRIZE MONEY FOR THE MEN’S & WOMEN’S 1ST PLACEGETTER IS $55,000. HOWEVER, IN THE MEN’S EVENTS TIME BONUSES ARE AWARDED AS FOLLOWS: $50,000 FOR A SUB 2:07.00 TIME, $75,000 FOR A SUB 2:06 TIME AND
$100,000 FOR A SUB 2:05.00 TIME.
So there is a big financial incentive for the marathoners to run a fast time and again a big incentive for the promoters and sponsors to get major international media coverage achieved through a fast winning time. Kenya’s Wilson Kipsang had a huge pay day of over $150,000 for his win in the London Marathon this year with his time of 2hr 4min 44secs.
One of the best uses of pacemaking was at the Van Damme Classic in Belgium in 2005 when Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele broke his own World Record over 10,000 metres. The meet promoter employed three pacemakers to keep Bekele on track for a world record, one of which was his younger brother.

The three pacemakers led Keninisa on pace with younger brother Tariku Bekele leading through 5km in 13.09 which isn’t a bad time for 5,000m! It wasn’t until after half way that Keninisa then took charge after cruising behind the pacemakers to take on the back end of the race to create an astonishing world record which still stands. He ran the last 400m lap in 57 secs. Awesome!

DIB STILL CARRIES THE SCARS FROM THE FALLOUT THAT FOLLOWED HIS LOSS TO AMERICAN STEVE LUEVAN WHEN THEY SLUGGED IT OUT FOR THE WORLD BOXING ORGANISATION’S CROWN AT ATLANTIC CITY IN 2008. IT IS THE ONLY LOSS THAT STAINS THE 36 FIGHTS ON HIS PROFESSIONAL RECORD AND HIS PRIDE FINISHED THE 12-ROUNDER AS BADLY BATTERED AS HIS BODY. “After some early success, I took way too much for granted,” Dib conceded. “I believed my ability could get me through anything but I lost - and it cut me deeply. While I tried to come to grips with the loss, it hurt to hear some people thought I was washed up [as a contender] before I’d even really started. It was a rude awakening, but what I took from that experience was success comes from hard work. SUCCESS COMES FROM BEING COMMITTED TO DOING EVERYTHING RIGHT and not taking short cuts because boxing isn’t a game, it is a challenge where the person with the greater will and bigger heart is dangerous.” Dib described being the reigning IBF champion as something that had made him a “better person” and he considered it his duty to try and help people fulfil their goals and dreams. “With the belt came a desire to give something back,” he said. “It can be as simple a gesture as offering a few words of advice to an aspiring boxer or giving a pair of signed gloves to charity. I like to think such acts can make a difference, and it’s because I’m conscious my actions could have an impact on a person, I’m positive and encouraging whenever I meet people.” While Dib is proud to be recognised as a world champion, the devoted fan of the St. George Illawarra rugby league team said he liked to be treated as an EVERYDAY BLOKE. “Sometimes people acknowledge me as ‘’the champ’’ and, while I realise it’s a sign of respect, I prefer to be called Billy because I’d rather be known as a humble and approachable person,” he said. “As I’ve grown older I’ve also realised RESPECT IS THE
FOUNDATION STONE OF BOXING. While it sometimes won’t be enough for the fighter to win a title, their courage should entitle them to a sense of respect. I also know boxing can humble those who fail to properly respect it.”

Billy Dib joins Australian boxing legends Jeff Fenech and Johnny Famechon as a featherweight world boxing champion, taking out the vacant IBF title with a unanimous 12 round points win over Mexico’s Jorge Lacierva at Homebush, Sydney.

Zalane Rag in Newcastle which was for an IBO Super Featherweight Title. He was a really tall guys that was quite strong and I still remember the fight very clearly.
I started boxing to help with asthma and found it was a useful way of learning how to defend myself after being bullied for so long in primary school.

I’m starting to get good recognition and I think being younger is definitely a bonus. It’s still early days so at the moment I’m happy with the way it’s going.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO TRAIN? ARE YOU IN TRAINING AT THE MOMENT? Yes we’re preparing for a fight here in early July. We’re currently communicating with a Brazilian boxer so hopefully it will all go ahead.
At first it was winning the World Title, now it’s continuing to fight well and defend my Title. I’d like to follow in the footsteps of Kostya Tszyu, Jeff Fenech and Barry Michael.

IF YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE BUYING COUNTERFEIT SPORTSWEAR, THAT’S ONE THING, BUT WHAT IF YOU ARE TRYING TO AVOID COUNTERFEIT? -------------------------
Recent research that Empirica conducted for the Australian Sporting Goods Association (ASGA; asga.com.au) looked at just that. We surveyed 1000 Australians and found that 8% purchased their most recent exercise clothing online, and 12% purchased their most recent pair of sneakers online. Of the sneakers purchased online, almost twice as many are purchased from overseas as from Australia. This might not sound like many, but when compared to other popular goods frequently purchased online, such as books (9%) and electronic gadgets (8%), sportswear is definitely paving the online way.

FOR BOTH ONLINE AND BRICKS AND MORTAR STORES, THE MAJORITY OF RESPONDENTS INDICATED THAT A PRICE THAT WAS TOO LOW WOULD RAISE THE COUNTERFEIT ALARM BELLS. POOR QUALITY WAS ANOTHER CUE MENTIONED FOR IN-STORE PURCHASES, SOMETHING THAT IS MORE DIFFICULT TO DETERMINE FOR ONLINE PURCHASES. RESPONDENTS INDICATED THAT A “DODGY-LOOKING” WEBSITE WAS ANOTHER IMPORTANT CUE FOR DETECTING COUNTERFEIT GOODS ONLINE.
A greater range was also an important motivation for those who purchased sportswear and clothing from overseas websites, whereas convenience was an added motivation for those shopping at local online stores.

THE FAKERS But as the market for purchasing sportswear online grows, so (unfortunately) might the prevalence of counterfeit goods. SO, WHO WOULD BUY COUNTERFEIT SPORTSWEAR? AND WHAT SORT OF DISCOUNT WOULD BE REQUIRED IN ORDER TO CONVINCE SOMEONE TO BUY COUNTERFEIT?
There was quite a wide range of responses to these types of survey questions as a function of gender and age.
MIDDLE-AGED MEN (35-44 YEARS) WERE THE MOST LIKELY MALE AGE GROUP TO REPORT NOT BUYING COUNTERFEIT SPORTSWEAR AT ANY COST; HOWEVER, STILL MORE THAN TWO-THIRDS REPORTED THAT THEY MIGHT CONSIDER BUYING COUNTERFEIT. OF THE WOMEN SURVEYED, THOSE AGED 55 YEARS OR OLDER WERE THE LEAST LIKELY TO BUY COUNTERFEIT. YOUNG ADULTS, BOTH MALE AND FEMALE, ON THE WHOLE, WERE THE MOST LIKELY TO BE TEMPTED BY COUNTERFEIT SPORTSWEAR. The average discount that would be required for survey respondents to purchase a counterfeit pair of $180 RRP Asics Gels, for example, ranged from about $58 for 18-24
year old women up to about $72 for women aged 55 years or older. Men provided responses that fell somewhere in the middle of these two price points. That equates to a discount of 32%-40%. It is interesting to ponder what will happen in this space in the coming years. Will online sportswear shopping become the norm and if so, will we be buying from Australian websites or will the trend to buy from overseas online retailers continue to grow? Either way, it is probably best to avoid buying those cheap “Asiks” shoes down at the local market! And probably also best to avoid the motivational (not!) “Adidas...nothing is possible” knock-off.!

THE GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY GIANTS SPORTS SCIENCE MANAGER, JOHN QUINN HAS ARGUABLY ONE OF THE TOUGHEST ROLES IN THE AFL.
IT IS HIS JOB TO ENSURE THE YOUNG PLAYERS THAT TAKE THE FIELD EVERY WEEK TO BATTLE FOR FOUR COMPETITION POINTS ARE NOT ONLY FIGHTING FIT, BUT HAVE AN ABILITY TO GIVE 100% AT ALL TIMES.
TO ENSURE THIS, PLAYER RECOVERY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER. HOWEVER THE CHALLENGING PART FOR QUINN IS THAT THERE IS NO TEXTBOOK TO DRAW UPON FOR FINDING THE ANSWERS HE SEEKS.
To have the best recovery possible it is key to know your players intently and manage every aspect of their recovery process. Many feel that once the sirens sounds the game is over, but for Quinn and his team it signals that the game is just beginning. “Recovery is really important and is it not only the end of the game, but we are also preparing 40

them for the next one. The sooner they recover the quicker we get them back into training. Every day counts, particularly with our young side not used to all our travel and the big knocks they receive every week,” said Quinn “As soon as they come off the field we stretch them and hydrate them, which is very important for this team. We also have a supplement plan that ensures that they have the correct balance for every individual for what they need for protein and carbohydrates. For example at the end of the game if they have had a bit of muscle damage they need that bit of protein to help rebuild the muscle, but also carbohydrates to help the muscle recovery process.” “Food is also important and the most important part of recovery is sleep. Quite often mentally and physically aroused and they cant sleep, so to calm them down we use cold tubs after the game. I am not a massive fan of Hot & Cold tubs after the game, because if they cop a knock during the game, the hot tub could make it bleed more. “The cold tubs wakes them up a bit more, so we use heavy foods such as meat after a game so it brings on a feeling of sleep after a game.

Quinn is one of the most experienced men in football having spent a number of years with the Essendon Bombers. However, his role with the newest AFL franchise brings its own unique challenges.
“Including the NAB Cup we will travel sixteen times out of twenty six games and Essendon at most will travel six times. So throughout the year we will have ten extra plane trips just to get to games of footy.
“The biggest change is that Essendon is an established team with older bodies. If you look

November some players do not arrive until December. This leaves us about twelve weeks to prepare them to play football.” “We have four days between flights a couple of times this year. They are the factors we are dealing with on a weekly basis. We need to ensure we maintain training loads, maintain fitness, maintain wellness, and maintain optimism, so there are several balls in the air at one time. “So keeping all of those things up and keep your team performing, I never had those challenges at Essendon, but so far I think the team is training really well,” Quinn said.
“IN ALL WE ARE THE YOUNGEST SIDE IN THE COMPETITION, WITH THE MOST TRAVEL, THAT HAS HAD THE LEAST PHYSICAL PREPARATION IN THE COMPETITION.
THIS IS A CHALLENGE I NEVER HAD AT ESSENDON. IT’S SOMETHING WE REALLY NEED TO MANAGE AND NAVIGATE CLOSELY AND THOUGHTFULLY.”

AFL Quinn states the biggest challenge he faces in the recovery process is something most of us simply take for granted. “The fact that they are away from home and not sleeping in their own bed.
I think Sleep is the most important recovery factor that there is. You can be in a beautiful hotel, have your own room and even take your own pillow, but its not your bed. “It’s not your surroundings, you cannot really do what you want to do, you are in the confines of your room, then you have structure around you that you don’t normally have at home, so there is a meal on, or meeting or an activation session. All of that is different, I think this team is going to get very good at that, because they are going to have to.” “The long term effects of that? Well, time is going to tell. If you look at teams like West Coast, it reduces the longevity of those players because they have to get up week after week 44

with the travel factor. Now, we don’t travel as much as West Coast in terms of mileage, but the essence of travel is going to be the same” said Quinn. One way the club tries to manage issues such as flying and different sleeping environments, is the clubs relationship with SKINS, with the players wearing the compression garments on all flights and in their sleep to aid recovery. But Quinn is not alone in his search for the best recovery practice for his players, given the experience of many others at the club. “I think teams have an idea of recovery, you hope that your process and protocols are different, but we have brought in the best of Brisbane with Graeme Allan and Luke Power and Craig Lambert, who have had to travel a lot and they have managed to be successful with travel. We also have Port Adelaide here with Mark Williams, Dean Brogan and Chad Cornes so we use their knowledge as well.” “We talk to different bodies about what they do with travel such as the AIS and put in everything we have learnt over the journey. I think other clubs would be doing travel as good as us in terms of recovery, but I don’t think any clubs will be doing it better than us, and what we are aspiring to do in twelve months to have the golden ticket in that regard,” said Quinn. Quinn is basically creating the textbook in relation to the recovery of young players, given no AFL club has had so many young players playing so many games at one time. Only time will tell if Quinn and his team are using the correct techniques.

Having worked with cricketers of all levels, including as the Australian Cricket Team Strength and Conditioning Coach from 2000 – 2005, I know how hard the players have to physically train to be top cricketers. They are extremely fit in comparison to many other sports top-level athletes and I wanted to show this to the public. The results can be used in an elite sport sense to use methodically to help monitor player workload. The information gleaned from the players wearing the GPS unit also allows training programs to be set aimed at reducing the risk of injury to players and ‘peak’ the players’ physical performance levels.
THE REASON BEHIND THE USE OF THESE DEVICES IS TO SEE EXACTLY WHAT THE PLAYERS GET UP TO ON THE FIELD AND IN TRAINING. IN THE PAST WE HAVE HAD A GOOD IDEA, BUT THIS LEAVES NO ROOM FOR ERROR AND SO FAR WE HAVE HAD SOME AMAZING RESULTS. The Australian players, as well as most international teams, have been extremely cooperative and helpful in wearing the GPS units in tough international cricket matches for the viewers on TV and for cricket fans to enjoy and learn from. The following tables and information highlight the GPS results that have been collated, as tested on Australian, India and Sri Lankan Cricketers during the summer. We captured some amazing results.
GPS SPEED MEASUREMENTS The speed we are talking about is walking, jogging and running speed. The measurement is in kilometers per hour or KM/H. For the past two seasons we have run a competition for “The Fastest Man in Cricket”, which showcases the great athleticism of these international cricketers. Running speed is an invaluable asset in cricket and if constantly worked at can be improved. Speed in running between wickets, chasing balls in the outfield, running to take a catch and even backing up throws can be improved by working on running speed. It takes the best sprinters in the world like Usain Bolt around 60 meters to build up to their maximum running speed in a race and generally the best athletes from sports teams around a 40-50 metre build up to reach their maximum speed or velocity. In cricket this means these maximum speeds are only likely to be achieved with a ball chase in the field towards the boundary like this season where Mike Hussey reached 35 km/h in the second ODI final against Sri Lanka this season in Adelaide. It’s the second time that Siddle has been the fastest player tested for the season, reaching a speed of 35.9km/h two seasons ago and Brett Lee winning last year with a remarkable speed of 36.2km/h during an ODI. With 24 cricketers having worn the GPS device in matches this season, this was definitely a fair indication of who the fastest man in cricket was this season and all players had the MAY 2012

WHAT IS BETTER THAN HITTING THE PAVEMENT FOR A RUN? PERHAPS SLUGGING IT OUT IN ANKLE-DEEP SAND! WELL, FOR OVER 600 COMPETITORS, THE BONDI BAREFOOT IS THE PERFECT EVENT TO DO IT, AS SIOBHAN McCARTHY EXPLAINS.
BONDI BEACH FIRST THING IN THE MORNING IS LIKE PITT STREET MALL AS 100S OF RUNNERS HEAD TO THE 1KM STRETCH OF SAND, AS PART OF PRE-WORK RUNNING RITUALS. And Sunday 27th of May is no exception as runners hit the sand in the BONDIBarefoot soft sand race, from elite runners to those just looking to conquer the distance. The BONDIBarefoot attracts a field of many champion runners including a number of Australian representative distance runners. But the race is not just for the elites, with hundreds of recreational runners ditching the shoes to take to the sand with competitors as young as 12 and some of the oldest competitors in their 80s. In the last ten years there have been leaps and bounds made in the research into ‘natural’ and ‘barefoot’ running, so it is no surprise that more and more people are kicking off their shoes and hitting the sand.

The Barefoot on Sydney’s iconic Bondi, first held in 2003 includes either a 4km event or 10km event for those up for a real challenge. Organizer Joel Maybury’s inside tips for tackling ‘the Barefoot’ is all in the lead up. “When lining up for your first BONDI Barefoot ensure you have a ‘good’ carbohydrate meal the night before, ensure to warm up and have a good stretch before the race.” “Bondi Beach is renowned for having one of the softest sands in the world so make sure you pace yourself and take on fluids during the race.” North Bondi Surf Club member Madeleine Palfrey, who is often seen in the early hours of the morning running laps of the beach, is set to tackle the 10km at her 3rd Barefoot. “I really enjoy running on the sand and I tend to get injuries whenever I run on the road so the sand is good because there’s less impact on my joints. Cronulla local and elite triathlete, Michael Fox, still holds the 4km record he set back in 2007, running a blistering pace to record a time of 15:07m. Meanwhile, one of our own contributors, Siobhan McCarthy, smashed the ladies 4km record in 2010 with a time of 17:36m, which still stands. In the 10km event, 5-time winner Jeremy Horne still holds the record that he set back in 2004, in a time of 40:04m. Regean Ellis has won the ladies 10km 6 times, setting the race record last year in a time of 43:14m.

FOREWORD BY ZANE CAMPBELL, JA SPRINT COACH LUKE IS VERY LAID BACK, BUT HE KNOWS HOW TO WORK HARD. FROM THE MOMENT I SAW LUKE PERFORM HIS FIRST 50M RUNTHROUGH AT 60% EFFORT I KNEW THAT I HAD A GOOD ATHLETE IN FRONT OF ME. IF HIS ATTITUDE TO TRAINING IS ANYTHING TO GO BY THEN I KNOW LUKE HAS WHAT IT TAKES PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY TO REACH THE TOP IN HIS SPORT.
JA: WHO IS LUKE NOBLETT? I’m a 19 regular kid with a love of sports.
JA: WHAT IS YOUR SPORT OF CHOICE? I play hockey and I love it. I got into hockey through my parents, who both played. I first stared in 2001 when I was 8 years old and have played every year since. I am currently in the National Junior squad and also play for Sutherland Hockey Club in the premier league team.
JA: WHAT’S THE TOUGHEST EVENT OR SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT YOU’VE EVER DONE? It would probably have to be the Singapore Youth Olympics or the Sultan of Johor International cup in Malaysia. This is because of firstly, the step up to playing in the international arena and secondly, the environmental factors such as humidity and high temperatures. I lost about 4kgs whilst playing in one of the games in Malaysia.
JA: WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE TRAINING SESSION AND WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE? My favourite training session would be when I get the chance to train with the Sutherland hockey club 1st grade team. I’m unable to train with them because NSWIS trainings fall on the same nights, so when I do get the occasional chance I love it.
JA: HOW MANY TRAINING SESSIONS DO YOU DO PER WEEK & THE BREAKDOWN? I do four hockey sessions per week and have just started doing four gym sessions a week. 58

JA: HOW DO YOU FIT ALL THAT IN, DO YOU WORK/STUDY AS WELL? I’m a full time student, doing a bachelor of health and movement. I have the opportunity to pick my own timetable to help me with training and work which helps a lot. Job wise, I work whenever I can, but finding work to fit around my training and school is difficult.
JA: WHAT ARE YOUR SECRETS TO STICKING TO A TRAINING PROGRAM? “I HAVE NO SECRETS. JUST MOTIVATION TO DO WELL IN MY HOCKEY AND WANTING TO PLAY AT THE TOP LEVEL. IT GETS HARD SOMETIMES HAVING TO MISS OUT ON THE SOCIAL SIDE OF LIFE BUT THAT’S THE SACRIFICES I THINK MOST ATHLETES HAVE TO MAKE.”
JA: WHAT’S YOUR BEST EXCUSE FOR NOT STICKING TO A TRAINING PROGRAM? Usually it’s uni work or fatigue from training. Doesn’t often work though haha.
JA: WHAT’S YOUR MOST DREADED TRAINING SESSION (DETAILS) AND WHY? That would probably have to be the pre-season 60

JA: YOU’VE ALREADY HAD A TASTE OF OLYMPIC GLORY, HAVING WON TEAM GOLD FOR AUSTRALIA AT THE YOUTH OLYMPICS IN SINGAPORE IN 2010. WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO NOW TO MAKE THAT TRANSITION FROM THE YOUTH SIDE TO REPRESENTING AUSTRALIA IN THE SENIOR NATIONAL SIDE? Just keep training, working hard and at every tournament for NSW and Australia continue to play well and hopefully I’ll get a chance in the future to play at the top level.

Weight gain over winter due to comfort eating however, is definitely not what most of us need or want these days. To keep your healthy eating and weight on track this winter, lets have a look at some ways to manage your comfort eating.

STUDIES INDICATE THAT COLD TEMPERATURES AND RAINY WEATHER MAY TRIGGER A NEED FOR CREAMY TEXTURES AND SWEETER TASTING FOODS TO LESSEN THE WINTER BLUES AND MILD DEPRESSION THAT WE EXPERIENCE FROM REDUCED SUNLIGHT AND SHORTER, GREYER DAYS. IN FACT, EXPERTS ESTIMATE 75% OF OVEREATING IS RELATED TO EMOTIONS EXPERIENCED WITH THE COLDER SEASONS. SOME ALSO SUGGEST THAT COMFORT EATING WAS A SURVIVAL INSTINCT FOR OUR ANCESTORS, WITH THE COOLER WEATHER SIGNALING THEM TO EAT MORE FOR WEIGHT GAIN TO ENSURE WARMTH AND PROTECTION AGAINST THE COLD TEMPERATURES.

WORK OUT WHAT YOUR COMFORT FOODS ARE
Keep a food diary of what you eat, how much and when. You may be surprised with what foods you actually consume across the course of a typical winter day. If there is a certain food that you are choosing every time you have a stressful moment at work or when its miserable weather outside, this may be your go-to comfort food.

WORK OUT YOUR COMFORT FOOD EATING TRIGGERS
Stress, anxiety, boredom and depression are strong emotional triggers for comfort eating during the winter months. Food can have a huge influence on your mood, changing your brain chemistry and temporarily boosting your emotions. For example the fat/ sugar combination in chocolate produces endorphins - the body’s natural opiate, which will temporarily improve your mood. However, if you are continually eating to tame your emotions rather than your appetite, you will gain weight over winter.
3.
ASSESS YOUR APPETITE
Your appetite is extremely complex and is determined deep within your brain. When blood sugar and nutrients are low, hormones and hunger signals are fired, causing you to feel hungry. However, many of us will eat when we are not physically hungry. Remember to always assess your appetite before you reach for your winter warming comfort food. Ask yourself “Am I really hungry”. If you don’t feel hungry, then your body probably doesn’t need the extra kilojoules.
4.
PLAN FOR TEMPTATION
Once you have identified your comfort food/s, triggers for temptation and assessed your appetite, you need to plan for temptation. Going cold turkey on comfort foods can work for some – not buying your comfort food when shopping and keeping it out of the house is a useful strategy for this. However, if avoiding your comfort food makes you crave it more, try to swap it for a similar, yet healthier alternative. If this doesn’t work, try setting limits around the portion size of your comfort food. Remember to plan your meals in advance too - if you have a wholesome

NUTRITION meal or snack on hand, you will be less likely to be tempted to indulge when you’re cold and low.
5.
EAT GOOD MOOD FOODS
Brightly coloured fruits and vegetables and foods containing omega 3 oils can help boost your mood during winter and lessen the temptation of comfort foods. Include Dark green vegetables, tropical fruits, oily fish and nuts in your eating plan.
6.
TRY SOME WINTER WARMERS
Warm vegetable soups, stews and casseroles packed with vegetables and legumes instead of processed meats and cream can help warm you up and keep the winter blues at bay.
7.
KEEP EXERCISING
Exercise does not only burns kilojoules and keep you healthy and fit, but it also releases endorphins that help control appetite and elevate mood, helping control the urge to comfort-eat.

The former Australian dual international became one of the first runners to register for the 2012 Gold Coast Airport Marathon (30 June – 1 July) when entries officially opened last month, signifying his commitment to the challenge ahead. The 36-year-old retired from rugby league last year and announced a new focus of his was to complete his first full marathon - a life long goal. “Running in a marathon has been a goal of mine for a long time and I thought what better place to do it than right here on the Gold Coast,” said Rogers. “The 42.195km race will be a massive physical and mental test, but at the same time I know it will be a life changing experience.” Rogers, whose illustrious sporting career included playing for the Australian Wallabies and tallying 200 National Rugby League games is currently recruiting a team to run the event with him. The former Cronulla Sharks utility and his running team are looking to raise awareness and funds for his co-founded charity 4 ASD Kids which aims to assist families and children
battling Autism Spectrum Disorder. “I’m currently recruiting a team of 50 people to run the marathon with me. We are calling it the ‘The Rat Race’ and are aiming to raise health and fitness awareness along with much needed funds for my charity,” said Rogers. Rogers’ competitive nature and self-confidence will surely get him across the finish line; however his greatest fear may play a dramatic role during the 42.195km that awaits him. “Blisters are my worst fear. I couldn’t think of anything worse than being 15kms in and getting a blister. It’s a genuine phobia of mine,” said Rogers. “If you ask any of my team mates that I used to play footy with they would tell you I would individually tape and strap every toe so they wouldn’t get blisters. It was quite funny.” Rogers will be attending the Gold Coast Airport Marathon along with 25,000 other participants as they descend on one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world in Queensland.
