editor’s letter IT’S LONG OVERDUE, THE JOCK ATHLETIC PHOTO EDITION! IT STARTED OUT AS IMAGES FROM THE PAST TWO AND A HALF YEARS OF THE MAGAZINE AND THEN IT GREW. WE ASKED FOR OUR CONTRIBUTORS TO SEND US THEIR FAVOURITE IMAGES OR THE PHOTOS THAT SPARKED GREAT MEMORIES FROM THE PAST FEW YEARS. THEN FOR PAUL WATSON & I IN PARTICULAR, MATES FOR OVER 25 YEARS, IT WENT BACK FURTHER, TO IMAGES FROM THE PAST 10-15 YEARS OF OUR INVOLVEMENT IN SPORT. SOME ARE JUST GREAT SHOTS AND OTHERS ARE GREAT MOMENTS, LIKE THE FRONT COVER. THE DAY BEFORE THIS SYDNEY BRANCH SURF LIFESAVING CARNIVAL IN 2012, I WAS AT THE FUNERAL OF MY BEST SCHOOLMATE KEN COLES, WHOSE BIRTHDAY WOULD HAVE BEEN THIS WEEKEND. I RACED THE NEXT DAY IN

A great day on the sand hills with (from right to left) 2 time Olympian, World Champ beach runner, Australian beach runner, State champ beach runner, champion bloke and on the left edge, champion Czech skier. One of my favourite shots. Image: Anthony Johnson, Fairfax

THIS CARNIVAL TO TAKE MY MIND OFF WHAT HAD HAPPENED TO KEN AND IN MEMORY OF KEN. STANDING NEXT TO ME AND SMILING AT THE CAMERA IS CIARAN WILLIAMS. I HAVE BEEN COACHING CIARAN SINCE SHE WAS 14 AND I HAVE SEEN HER GROW INTO A FINE ATHLETE, A MORE THAN CAPABLE PHYSIO AND GREAT FRIEND. IT WAS A GREAT DAY ON THE BEACH, RACING WITH FRIENDS AND IN THE SERIOUSNESS OF COMPETITION, WHERE THE OFFICIALS WERE EXPLAINING THE COURSE, THIS MOMENT CAPTURED WHAT SPORT IS ALL ABOUT - COMPETITION, GETTING OUTSIDE, MATESHIP AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, FUN.

jock campbell I’ve given a photographic summary of a few special moments over the life of our business and of course a couple of cricket shots. It was so difficult to limit the pictures and people and the great times we’ve had over the past 10-15 years. Sport, training and life is about special moments, which we have been fortunate enough to be part of many. I have a great passion for sport and the so called grind of training that is required to be the best. I don’t see it as a grind, I see it as part of life’s joy - the raw spirit of sport and competition that brings out the best in people, inspiring moments and inspirational feats both in competition and training. That’s the pure heartbeat of sport and why we and certainly I got not involved but committed to sport. My images are of such moments and people, certainly not all of them, but just a taste of great moments in time. Photo left top: I was lucky enough to do a 15min interview with Usain Bolt (or he was lucky enough to be interviewed by me depending on how you look at it) for a media opportunity when he was in Australia. He was extremely affable and it was a totally enjoyable experience, which made it a great week - we had our baby girl, sold our house and spent an afternoon with Usain all in the space of two days. Photo left bottom: Our runner, Ali Najem, who won two silver medals at the Surf Lifesaving National Championships this year, said he wasn’t that happy with silver. By the looks of things, doing the Usain Bolt lighting bolt immediately after he finished, it appears his “head” had grown and he was quite happy!

Clockwise from above: Morning training with my Average Joe’s runners club; The first Jane McGrath Classic - It was great to have Jane McGrath at the first race we named in her honour. She loved the concept & was able to walk the event. RIP Jane – to absent friends; Our other race we organise the Wanda X Treme 6. What makes this so special is the four runners leading the way are four of our best. It’s a very tough soft sand race which includes many sand hills, you beauty; The Jock Athletic Launch - In 2006 Watto and I officially launched Jock Athletic. It was a great night with Glenn McGrath and Ricky Pointing, plus Steve Waugh, Peter Hadfield, & “some footballer” as our MC & guest speakers.

cricket I could fill 10 magazines on all the memorable moments I’ve had from cricket, but I’ve kept it to one day, when we won the World Cup in 2003. We had been the number one team in the World for a long time, but that doesn’t mean much if you don’t win the major trophy. The planning and preparation that went into winning that tournament was huge and the players professionalism, dedication and courage through this tournament was inspirational. This was easily my most treasured day in cricket. 14

Clockwise from above: Great to see the little fella smiling, Ricky Ponting who lead by example and took the game away from India in the final to help us post a world record score; A photo with the cup - Punta, me, Marto and Pidgey; This photo epitomises the preparation that went into this tournament, the ripped macho men in the best shape of their lives. Andy Bichel, left, and Michael Bevan who played huge roles in our tournament finally letting their hair down after the win!

surf life saving Over the past 20 years Surf Lifesaving has been one of my favourite sports and one where we’ve had some exceptional success. A few memorable moments from top left (clockwise): 2km Gold and Silver medalists at 2007 National Titles, Michael Fox (now a pro triathlete) & Melissa Campbell, and in the middle a very happy coach; World Champion in 2006, Dee Cooper, and currently 3rd in the World; It’s rare you have everything go your way in sport, but this year at the NSW State titles Ali Najem did a very difficult double in his first season with Gold in U19 2km, followed 40mins later by Gold in the Opens; The Wanda Pharlaps relay team after taking silver at the 2006 World Titles beach relay. Second from the right Zane Campbell, now one of our coaches was my most successful sprinter representing Australia and winning many medals at State, National and World Titles.

Clockwise from above left: Jock Athletic future: 4 of my favourite youngsters all getting places at the Regional X Country carnival this year - Jazz, Lara, Chloe & Steph; A great experience, Ali and I competing in our first club X Country in the all state relays. Ali aged 18 & me 45. Yes, I’ve started a little late. Our biggest athlete, Wendell Sailor, next to our smallest and first ever junior, soccer player Michael Ivanovski. Both top blokes and a fantastic influence on our training group; Three of our current best - Dee and Ali, who medalled at last years World Titles, with Jay Furniss (right), who set a World Record in the Champion Lifesaver event.

paul watson Started by Paul & Jock to keep weight off the Sutherland Aquadot elite swimmers, Saturday Sand Hills fast became an institution, attended by elite & amateur athletes from sports such as cricket, rugby league, surf life saving and athletics, along side our accountant, grandmothers, kids, dogs and people going through their mid-life crisis, all doing their best. Saturday sandhills has been a regular fixture on the calendar for roughly 25 years. Numbers swell to almost 100 people in the group during the summer months, down to as few as 10 during the winter, but we’re always out there. Easily our favourite session of the week.

Clockwise from top left: Celebrating with Peter Hadfiled (left) and Craig Gower (right) after winning the 2003 NRL Premiership. Paul was the Strength & Conditioning coach for the Penrith Panthers from 20012005; Paul, far right, campaigns with local councellors in Cronulla to save the sand hills, which were being targeted for redevelopment. The sand hills have now been heritage listed and are protected from future development; A young Ben Ross leads the Penrith Panthers up the “Road to Nowhere” in the sand hills during pre-season training. Christmas Sandhills - the theme changes every year and it’s great fun.

This amazing image is of Claire Mallett, Australian High Jumper. Paul Watson has trained Claire since she was 14 and helped her achieve her goal of representing Australia at the Commonwealth Games. Claire gives us a great insight as to what it was like to represent our great sporting nation. “This was the Commonwealth Games 2006 in Melbourne. I cleared 1.83m and missed the next height of 1.88m, I jumped equal third in height but on a count back was placed 4th with 2 other girls. Each clearance got the massive crowd cheering and gave me goosebumps. I almost cleared 1.88m on my second attempt with the bar staying on when I hit the mat but just wobbling off after a few seconds, another goosebumps moment with the crowd anticipation and made me want to try harder for the next jump. I may have lost a bit of concentration here but that just comes with experience at that level of competition. Competing in the Commonwealth Games was a goal of mine from the age of 9, and I even have the drawing to prove it. I am so happy that I was able to reach my goal and with my performance at this level.

melissa campbell Pictured front row, 4th from left, I’m about to join team mates on the MS Gong Ride for “Team Toe” in November 2005. In October 2004, my baby sister Trish, pictured centre holding the sign, was diagnosed with MS at the age of 26. I love this photo for so many reasons - it represents the strength of her support network and how her diagnosis rallied the troops to help fight this retched disease. Some were seasoned cyclists, others hadn’t ridden more than a couple of kms around the local bike track. But none hesitated to put on the lycra, and that year a tutu, to support Trish in raising money for MS Australia. Happy to report Trish is healthy and well and married to one of my best mates and has 2 beautiful children.

I had the privilege of training alongside Australian Cricket Legend Glenn McGrath at Tonkin Oval in Cronulla. I was training for surf life saving competition whilst Glenn was training for the upcoming IPL season. Notice the difference in our running styles - Glenn looks like he’s a bout to bowl a bouncer while my arms are all over the shop.

One of the most amazing things I’ve ever experienced - finishing my first Marathon in 2012 at the Sydney Running Festival. This photo says it all - just look at the expression on the face of the girl next to me it’s elation, jubilation, accomplishment and ‘Thank the Lord that’s over’. Loved every minute of it.

Spectacular sand hills. To this day, running on the sand is my favourite session. Running up the middle, on my right is Cricketer Glenn McGrath. To my left, Cricket Umpire Simon Taufel, one of the most dedicated athletes I’ve ever met. It’s no wonder he was the ICC’s No. 1 Cricket Umpire in the World for several years in a row.

the olympics We’d done it! This photo was taken bout half an hour after I walked off the track at the Olympics. I was disappointed not to make the final of the 5k but, as always, Jony was there to meet me and tell me how proud he was regardless. I had him to thank for me continuing running in the seasons when I wanted to quit. Above right: the 5km heat.

Eloise Wellings: Running as the dawn breaks in Uganda. My favourite place in the world to run. We run on a long dusty orange dirt road, passing the farmers sleepily coming out of their huts after the rooster crows to begin work on their crops. Most yell out something in Ugandan so I’m forever asking the boys to translate as we run along, most say something pertaining to the fact that they can’t believe there is a white woman running and then cheer me on to beat the boys. This was taken about 10 days after the London Olympics, I was still gettin’ about in my Australian uniform... Just proud I guess.
