EARTH ARTIFACT JODIE HIRST

THE BRIEF

The Voyager Golden Records are phonograph records, which were included aboard both Voyagers Spacecraft, which were launched in 1977. They contain sounds and images selected to portray the Diversity of life and culture on Earth, and are intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form, or for future humans, who may find them? The Voyager spacecraft’s are not heading towards any particular star, Far in the future as the nearest star on Voyager 1’s trajectory will only be reached in 40,000 years. Carl Sagan noted that “The spacecraft will be encountered and the record played only if there are advanced space-faring civilizations in interstellar space. But the launching of this ‘bottle’ into the cosmic ‘ocean’ says something very hopeful about life on this planet.”[2] Thus the record is best seen as a time capsule or a symbolic statement rather than a serious attempt to communicate with extraterrestrial life.

Over the next few weeks you are required to submit creative proposals through to finished design work/animation for a new version of the ‘Golden Record’ entitled, ‘Earth Artifact’. This does not have to be a slavish reproduction of the original golden record, but could be a more contemporary version, which should be reflected in the content and the format/media channel of your choice. You should document all stages of the research and design process, which should demonstrate a critical understanding of the design challenge. You should be inventive and demonstrate your ingenuity in solving this creative challenge. It is important you generate several creative solutions, taking one justified idea forward to a final solution.

“For millions of years mankind lived just like the animals. Then something happened which unleashed the power of our imagination. We learned to talk, we learned to listen. Speech has allowed the communication of ideas enabling people to work together ... to build the impossible. Mankind’s greatest achievements have come about by talking ... and its greatest failures by not talking. It doesn’t have to be like this. Our greatest hopes could become reality in the future with the technology at our disposal - the possibilities are unbounded. All we need to do is make sure we keep talking”. Stephen Hawking

UNDERSTANDING OF THE BRIEF The Earth artifact brief instructs us to reinvent the golden record sent up on the voyager in 1977. But by doing so, we are to create something new and original that would educate other species or even other humans that may or may not exist in the solar system. This to me means to be creative and represent the world in another way or format. When the voyager was launched it was deemed improbable that the golden record would reach other life forms, but if it were ever to, it would be able to give them a picture of what life was or is like for humans living on earth. The phrase I used to make sure I kept on track was “representing the earth to people who haven’t heard of, or seen it’. This is what helped me come up with my ideas. The contents of the golden record is not relevant expect for that I need to know what’s on it to know what they represented and what they thought was important enough to tell people that know nothing about our planet. Our final idea does not have to be a replica of the golden record, the aim is that it is influenced by the golden records purpose and represents the world in some way or another, from any angle and any approach.

THE GOLDEN RECORD The Voyager Golden Record contains 116 images and a variety of natural sounds, such as those made by wind, thunder and animal sounds, including the songs of birds and whales. The record additionally features musical selections from different cultures, genres and eras. Spoken greetings in fifty-nine languages are included and printed messages from President Jimmy Carter and U.N. Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim. A committee chaired by Carl Sagan of Cornell University selected the items for NASA. The golden record is a gold-sprayed vinyl record containing sounds, images and greetings from earth, created like a time casual, meant for other organisms out in the solar system if they were ever to find it.

[EARTH ARTIFACT]

COVER SYMBOLS These are the symbols displayed on the front of the record. The top left symbol is a recognizable image of the record itself, along with the stylus it would be found with. The symbol shows the position in which the record should be played from the beginning, indicated by the stylus. The writing around symbolizes the speed and how long the record should last. This image is to represent how to listen to the record for someone who would not know. The symbols to the right hand side of the record relate to the picture on the record and how they are to be viewed. The symbol on the bottom left indicated the location of earth in relation to the solar system. The symbols are basically instructions to the record. This is interesting as it shows to me that NASA felt that instructions for earth were needed and not to be experimented with. This strangely gave me ideas instantly about society and the type of world we live in.

[EARTH ARTIFACT]

IMAGES FROM THE RECORD Looking through the images that the golden record held on it gave an insight into what the NASA workers were trying to represent, and helped me see what they thought was important on earth, worth showing the outside worlds. This showed the symbols they found most important and the weather, activities, people and occupations that were worth showing. From this I realized that the main aspects of earth needed to be shown. Such as the human form, the weather itself and the different views, animals, culture and accomplishments of the earth. These are the things I wanted to represent.

HUMAN CULTURE Culture is the full range of learned human behavior patterns. The term was first used in this way by the pioneer English Anthropologist Edward B. Taylor in his book, Primitive Culture, published in 1871. Taylor said that culture is “that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, law, morals, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by every member of society.” Culture is a powerful human tool for survival, but it is a fragile phenomenon. It is constantly changing and easily lost because it exists only in our minds. Our written languages, governments, buildings, and other man-made things are merely the products of culture. Here are some of the things that determine our culture and where we belong in society... 1. Communicating with a verbal language consisting of a limited set of sounds and grammatical rules for constructing sentences 2.using age and gender to classify people (e.g., teenager, senior citizen, woman, man) 3.classifying people based on marriage and descent relationships and having kinship terms to refer to Them (e.g., wife, mother, uncle, cousin) 4.raising children in some sort of family setting 5.having a sexual division of labor (e.g., men’s work versus women’s work) 6.having a concept of privacy 7.having rules to regulate sexual behavior 8.distinguishing between good and bad behavior 9.having some sort of body ornamentation 10.making jokes and playing games 11.having art 12.having some sort of leadership roles for the implementation of community decisions Societies and cultures are always changing showing different sides to evolving humans. The attitudes and behavior that we are expected to follow change, for example how we look, fashion, art, and how we use technology. This all determines how other people view us in our society and there is a certain way to be seen as “perfect”. The way we live has changed dramatically and this is something that can be shown through art and design. [RESEARCH]

NICK GENTRY Nick Gentry is an artist I came across when looking on Pinterest for inspiration. This caught my eye because one of my initial ideas I came up with for the earth artifact is associated with technology and the way in which the world has changed and evolved technologically. These pieces represent to me the connection between humans and technology and how we depend on it so much. Although floppy disks are a thing of the past now, a few ears ago they were the ‘new technology’. This gave me instant inspiration, I thought about how I can use different parts of technology to show how I see society and technology’s association with one another. I think we are all getting so wrapped up in technology are communication is becoming less personal and soon we wont communicate with other humans, everything will be done through the technological world. That is what it represents to me when I view it, however the reasoning is that his art is influenced by the development of consumerism, technology, identity and cyber culture in society. He is best known for his floppy disk paintings and film negative artworks, placing an emphasis on recycling obsolete media and the reuse of personal objects as a central theme. This is a way of working that I really admire, I would love to take influence form this and create something with deep meaning on technology in society as I think this is something that is a massive issue in the world right now.

[RESEARCH]

MAURICE MBIKAYI This artist Maurice Mbikayi, explores how technology affects identity and history within people and the world. I think the concept is good as it links technology with the public and how we communicate which is the biggest issue of the future and our society. The keyboards in the brain show how people are constantly behind screens and think like computers even. This is something that has evolved through our society as we live in a web 2.0 era. Personally I’m not a fan of the work she has produced however I think the concept is good and this is something I could work with and experiment with making something that represents a similar concept of culture and society. Her work is primarily related with Identity, History and technology seeking to interrogate socio-political boundaries. She also investigates the effects of technology on identity and history, while unpacking the ways in which technology has had an impact on diverse populations. As an artist, She draws on technological resources available for ideas more efficiently. She particularly focus’s on various ways in which the advanced technological revolution of the last twenty years has both positively and negatively impacted on the world generally.

CHRIS NICHOLLS After looking at human culture and how society has shaped and evolved us I looked at some artists that either portrayed this or gave me this impression. These images by Chris Nicholls, magazine editor and photographer, Show to me that humans have 2 sides, they have different personalities and people can be different and change. This to me is a modernist theory as people are seen to be so humble a few years back and now people are seen as vain, self obsessed, and everything is mediated around celebrity status and we only see the sides they want us to see. Reality is blurred for us and we are shown what we are only allowed. Chris Nicholls interpretation of this image is that he was trying to turn up the contrast of the images so there was a distinct and sharp difference in the image. Which I think then reinforces the message I get from the pieces of art within this project.

NATALIA PEREIRA “ Dismorfobina “is a series of photographs made by the Spanish artist Natalia Pereira based in Barcelona. A series of portraits whose face was disfigured by a rubber band wrapped tightly around the subject’s head reflects “ the distortion of our identity when we are desperately trying to fit into a perfect mold that is not ours. An endless quest and need to be what we are not. “ When I see this and the meaning behind it I think it represents our society’s form at the moment, its about how society and culture shapes us and expects to us be a certain way and if we do not fit into the ideology of a ‘normal’ human, we are discriminated against. A development in society that is not an improvement, it shows how humans act in a certain way even if its not them just to please society.

[RESEARCH]

ILEANA HUNTER

Again this piece by Ileana Hunter tells me about the transparency of the human being and how we can become lost in society if we follow everyone, the negative space represents the missing hands and I think that reinforces the impact of transparency, something I take influence and inspiration from.

CAT CADE

Cat Cade is someone who sees magic in reflections, finds joy in creating, feels strength in sharing, hunts for beauty in souls and falls in love with shadows. This piece is part of her collection. This caught my eye because I think it shows again the transparency of humans, and how we can be manipulated and guided into thinking what another human or society does.

PRIMARY RESEARCH TECHNOLOGY After looking at this artist work I decided to go see what kind of parts I could find and what elements of technology I could work with. I found a box of old computer parts, chips and components. I looked at them in detail to get some inspiration and some ideas in which I could use them. I looked at Marice Mbikayi’s work and thought about manipulating them into photos but I also thought about cutting them up and making a physical sculpture. I found that a lot of the components had codes, symbols and patens on them, giving me ideas to create graphics on paper as well as using these physically. After analyzing them I realized there was a lot I could do with these things and during the development process I will explore this. although these are all quite similar and come from the same components I am going to look at other technologies. Such as phones, printers etc. just to get more of an insight into what’s inside and I can combine this with what’s inside us and how we work.

[PRIMARY RESEARCH]

PHOTO MINIPULATION Cody William Smith

After looking at particular artists I looked for general inspiration on Pinterest, most were unaccredited. I wanted to look into photo manipulation because I first found the first image and really liked the effect. I think many things can be represented using this way of working and I find it really effective when getting a message across in a piece of work. The work is distorted but organized all at the same time, it gives contrast. Negative space is also shown to be used well. I think this is something that can be used well to get a message across in a slight but obvious way. It can say a lot about a piece of art. For example the negative space fusion in the bottom middle image shows the relationship between night and day, they are fused, they don’t come without the other and the faces within this show it.

PEJAC Pejac is an artist that draws silhouettes onto windows to create images from the views outside, some are abnormal and you know instantly they are not real but some look realistic. However I prefer the abnormal ones. I liked his piece because as well as manipulating photos for his result he manipulates reality when making the images and this to me is creative and innovative, I’ve never heard of it before. Pejac manipulates his work to show what he wants them to show. He distorts reality and makes things that are impossible look real, he represents fantasy and dreams. This also links to the human culture and how although we work we also need to dream in life, we need to distort reality and see what would happen, test, experiment and push life.

TYPOGRAPHY Typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language readable and beautiful. The arrangement of type involves selecting typefaces, point size, line length, line spacing (leading), letter spacing (tracking), and adjusting the space within letters pairs (kerning). Graphic designers are the most common profession to either create or use typography. Typography can reflect a word using images with text or the words looking like what it is describing. Typography can have a great impact on what the work is trying to portray and the message it is sending out. Something I can use in my piece. I thought of an idea to take famous quotes or important song lyrics that mean something about the world and have relevance to the way we live, and creating these quotes using different typefaces to represent what its trying to say. So I looked into some typographers and how they use text and image to create impact in their work.

[RESEARCH]

ANTHONY BURRILL Anthony Burrill is known for his typographic art. His piece “I like it. What is it? Shows how imagery cant just look good it has to mean something. You have to be able to explain your work; his simple typography is to not distract from the message he is trying to portray. Although simple the words get you thinking and the bold type make sure it’s in your face and questions you. Type doesn’t have to be big and fancy, it can look good, but simplicity can also look good when getting a message across. I like this method as I think it makes a message easy to read compared to some more complex type that can be difficult to read and therefore lose meaning, on the other hand some complex type can have a massive impact on the viewer.

[RESEARCH]

CRAIG WARD Craig Ward is a designer that plays with the words imagery. He plays with what the words say and turns them into onomatopoeia. He makes the words look like what they say. For example in the image to the left, at the top it says you blow me away and the type in combined with the imagery as if it had been blown to pieces. This is something that really makes an impact when done well. Usually motion graphics.

STEFAN SAGMEISTER Stefan Sagmeister is a famous graphic designer, known for the shocking work of art, drawing on his body. He works with text upon image, something I wish to do so I looked at his work a lot and took a lot of influence from this. I wanted my quote’s to mean something upon the picture and relate, not just be random picked quotes.

FAMOUS QUOTES I came across a piece of type that was a famous quote; this gave me an idea to explore. To see how famous quotes from historical and well known people to represent what the earth is like, from different eras, years apart to see how society and our world has grown. I looked at modern quotes, historical, less known but meaningful and technologically minded quotes and saw the many different meanings behind them. I knew this was an idea I could explore in more depth.

WORDS OF THE WORLD PRIMARY SOURCE When researching online words that people would associate with the world, words that they would describe the world in I got these... - Failure - Conflict - Mortality - Urgency - Purpose - Knowledge - Technology - Complexity Some of these words I would agree with however I wanted to get a primary perspective on the matter. I created a simple question just asking for 1 word that would describe the earth to them. these are the results I got. - Unsustainable - Culture - Draining - Unplanned - Unexplainable - Ignorant - Dying - Unfair - Abused

MOSHE MIKANOVSKY Moshe Mikanovsky has represented the religious belief of the 7 days of creation in a way of using water colors, He has took what was created on each day literally which is something that I wanted to avoid, I wanted to think outside the box and make it less obvious however I like his style of work and think they all tie in well together. His art is influenced by his religious heritage and his love for architecture, art and colour

GENISIS: THE CREATION OF THE WORLD This is an animation, found on YouTube, the maker is unidentifiable, but this gave me more inspiration into what the bible said and what Christians believed. Its a simplified version, but it made me think about how I could use type to do this in a more modern and capturing way. The animation goes through the story by genesis in chronological order; it was something that was created for kids, to get them to understand the story in a simple and interesting way. I think this does this well but if I was to take influence from this I would defiantly be able to create a type-based animation that would recreate this story in a modern and original way.

CREATION OF THE WORLD Christians believe due to the theory written in the bible, that the world and all living things in it were created in 7 days, 6 if you don’t count the day of rest on the 7-day (Sunday). They believe that each day another part of the world was created. This then was the beginning of our world.

Day 1- light and darkness/ day and night

Day 2- Sky

Day 3- Land and sea/ plants and trees

Day 4- Sun, moon and stars

Day 5- sea creatures and winged birds

Day 6- Mamals and humans

Day 7- Day of rest

RELIGIOUS CULTURE

7 DAYS OF CREATION

The theory comes from the christen bible, the story of the 7 days of creation where god created heaven and earth, with different main aspects being created each day. There is a battle between religion and science as scientist believe the earth was created by something which is referred to as the big bang theory, backed up be Albert Einstein’s E=MC2. Some scientists can accept that god was creator, but how often do we consider what was involved in that creation? God was a chemist, a physicist, an astronomer, and a biologist. He was most certainly an artist, a maker of all of our world’s beauty. He was the lawmaker of all of the unseen forces that make “nature” orderly and predictable. The creation account is found in Genesis 1–2. The language of the Genesis account makes it clear that all of creation was formed from nothing in six literal 24-hour periods with no time periods occurring between the days. The universe as it exists was not produced by some cosmic accident. The conditions of creation were intricately planned and considered. A mindless uncontrolled “big bang” would result in destruction and chaos, not the life and order we now see formed by society and ourselves. Personally I am not religious, and I don’t believe that the world was actually made this way by god, however I find the theory interesting and would like to think that I could represent this story in a modern way that people of todays world may understand and connect with.

CONCEPT

HUMAN CULTURE & TECHNOLOGY

INTRODUCTION My first concept is around human culture and our society today, our relationship with technology and how we have evolved and developed into a new era. Where technology, identity and society’s acceptance are some of the most important things to us. Ways in which I can show humans in different ways and there many different sides. WHAT IS MY IDEA? I plan to take inspiration from Nick Gentry and Marice Mbikayi using technological pieces to create messages and graphics. My main message I want to explore is about how humans and technology are now interconnected, we are powered by technology and without it in this day and age we would be lost. I plan to use the primary research of the computer parts to create this. HOW AM I GOING TO COMUNICATE THIS? I want to present it in either a sculpture format depending on the results I may get, or a series of paper graphic posters to portray the messages. WHO IS THIS FOR?] These graphics or sculptures, depending on the pieces of work I decide to create, are going to be for people of a generation that look at younger people who are technologically minded and wonder about the effects the meanings and the way in which the world will go if these technological advances keep happening.

[CONCEPTS]

2

CONCEPT

7 DAYS TO CREATE THE EARTH

INTRODUCTION My next concept is based around the religious story of the 7 days of creation. After finding water color paintings and a graphic video on the subject it gave me inspiration. WHAT IS MY IDEA? I have the idea to represent the 7 days as posters in a booklet in chronological order of how god is believed to have created the earth. Each one representing each one of the days. Done in a creative way to represent it obviously but in a more interesting way. WHAT AM I TRYING TO COMUNICATE? I want to do this as I want to show the outside world what our main aspects of earth are but I want to do it in a modern graphic way. My aim is to reinvent the old fashioned way the story is seen. The things that were created years ago are all still here, however I want to show what its like now and how everything has changed and evolved and adapted to live in this world. WHO IS THIS FOR? This type of idea is for people from outside of the world that do not know what the world is or how it works. Its a way to show them what’s in the world and how it had advanced but doing it in a modern way, not a religious way as the audience this appeals to will not understand this aspect of the world.

[CONCEPTS]

3

CONCEPT TYPOGRAPHY

INTRODUCTION I found during my research the words people would describe the world as, these were interesting and I think with relative typography, that it could be interesting, I thought of a way I could represent the world using typography and words only. I thought this would be good to show aspects of the words I am portraying that people would not usually see before. It would show people from the outside the modern time of today. WHAT IS MY IDEA? My next idea is to develop typography; I could create an animation on after effects with the words displayed. I could also have famous quotes and song lyrics on this animation. I thought about doing this in a more illustrative way and hand drawn, making it easy for me to draw representations of the words through type. WHY AM I COMUNICATING THIS? The reason I chose this as a idea is because I think a lot can be said for the earth when you look at the famous figures and quotes that have been made, that people live by and respect. These people changed our world and it could be massively different without them. Music is also a diverse art in our world and has being around for century’s, the difference from 100 years a go to now is tremendous and this documented would represent the world. WHO IS THIS FOR? Again this idea is based on showing people that don’t know earth more about earth and exactly what it is, as the brief is however I think this is for more creative of outsiders, a different way to show the world through words, quotes and lyrics that are iconic and historical markers on earths timeline.

[CONCEPTS]

DEVELOPMENT

[DEVELOPMENT]

This was a quick image I sampled together however I think this can be developed further. The reasoning behind it shows that everyone, even young people are surrounded by a massive range of technology and that’s how they get through life now, We think like machines, We constantly have a phone or Ipad in our hands, we function in a different way to what we used to. I then developed the first image further contrasting the images like Chris Nicholls, I did this to represent the obvious change in our behavior and in the way we use technology. I tried making the contrast even more obvious but I feel this takes the image too over the top, I then tried the same but using a colour and I think this may work if it was a different colour, I don’t feel the blue represents the feel of it right, green may be better. I also tried blurring the image as if ‘blurring the boundaries’ however I don’t feel like this image is anything that I can work with into to a final idea.

[DEVELOPMENT]

[DEVELOPMENT]

[DEVELOPMENT]

This piece originally was an image of a city with a pattern overlapped, however the pattern was one of the kind where it seemed to give off a mysterious look, a look of technological machinery, like looking though a microscope or telescope. This gave me the idea of how we are constantly being watched, our human culture has changed through the times, and we are not aware but we are watched. It shows how the whole city and the people in it are controlled by technology. We thrive from it, and need it in our lives, without it some people actually feel lost. The first few experiments with this image I don’t think reflected the technological side of human culture, as obvious as I think it should be, but darkening the image and adding contrast showed that actually this image gives a nice effect and shows the codes and writing along the sides, showing the technology representation. These last images are the ones that I think are successful, however I don’t think it represents human culture to its full potential yet. I think the image may need to be changed, although the city is technologically controlled, so are individuals

CREATION OF THE WORLD FINAL IDEA

I knew from the beginning I wanted to represent the earth in a paper graphic way using a collaboration of things either from the golden record or that relate, I have picked this as my final idea however I have chosen to represent how the earth was made using the 7 days of creation believed by Christians. I have used this because this shows all main organisms and aspects of the earth in 7 days. I intend to do 7 images that represent these 7 days in either obvious or slightly more hidden meanings. I also think its important to represent the world now as the change is massive and needs documenting to people that don’t know it. This is going to be based on the technological advances of our world. Instead of just having a graphic I think the image needs some explaining therefore I have decided to place a quote in carefully picked typography to complement and explain the day in which is being represented in the creation process of 7 days. These quotes will not be any quotes they will be famous ones, from famous people, from all sorts of eras and generations. I also plan to ask people around me how they would describe the world and these words will be displayed on the images with the quote. Towards the end I hope to produce a booklet of A5 that will go through the whole of the creation process and end with todays society.

Day 1- day and night represents work, with a quote by Stephen hawking- “ Work gives you meaning and purpose and life is empty without it” Day 2- sky represents that we have to have dreams in life with a quote from martin Luther King-” I have a dream” Day 3- land, sea and vegetation, represents that this its fast going and industrialization is happening quickly using a quote from Mark Twain”Buy land, nobody makes it anymore” Day 4- sun, moon and stars- represent the complexity of the earth around us with a quote from Neil Armstrong- “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” Day 5- sea creatures and birds- represents nature in our world with a quote from sir David Attenborough-” man is by nature a political animal” Day 6- humans, representing the knowledge we have with a quote from Nelson Mandela-” Education is the most powerful thing you can use to change the world” Day 7- day of rest- represents the urgency in our lives with a quote from Leonardo de Vinci-” Nothing strengthens authority as much as silence” Extra day- future, represents the technology that has evolved in our world now and in the future, with a quote by Steve Jobs-” Lets go invent tomorrow rather than worry about what happened yesterday” [FINAL IDEA]

With this graphic being my first, I wasn’t exactly sure on the style I was going to adopt, but I knew I wanted the city scene to be shown in different stages throughout the day. Therefore I wanted a formal looking text to reflect the business like scene of the world. The typeface could be quite flexible on this one and I think I am going to have to experiment a lot with the type after the graphic is finished.

[FINAL IDEA DEVELOPMENT]

[FINAL IDEA DEVELOPMENT]

[FINAL IDEA DEVELOPMENT]

This graphic represents day 1 of the process, day and night. It seems strange to represent this in a way using city life however when I looked at the 7 representations I would be creating, I realized that there was a sky graphic and I wanted to show as many aspects of the world as possible. An aspect that I thought was very important to show was work life, city life and human beings. So I chose to show the same city in 3 different stages, morning, mid-day and at night. I chose a quote by Stephen Hawking the most intelligent man. I did this because it shows how hard he works and the quote tells us very simply that without work we would have no purpose. It represents what humans do in life.

With the typography on this graphic, I want to be very simple; I wanted to have the feel of relaxation. The sky with clouds connotes dreaming and drifting off. So I wanted the text to not be too heavy and bold but be readable and relaxing, I want the text to just roll off the tongue and feel calming to look at as a whole piece together.

[FINAL IDEA DEVELOPMENT]

I had seen a piece of work on Pinterest and it inspired me to try this method. I wanted to create a graphic representing the sky using images of the sky during different stages to show not 1 but all parts of the worlds sky, so this became a vey interesting way to do it and the results I was getting I was very happy with. I played around with different colours and layouts trying to get the best effect I could that would represent the topic the best that it can.

[FINAL IDEA DEVELOPMENT]

[FINAL IDEA DEVELOPMENT]

After doing research and finding examples using the same method as this, I really liked the effect. It meant that I was able to show the sky in many different stages, weather conditions and colours. Without making the image look too busy. I think the way its put together looks really effective and although its not just a simple image of the sky its a merge of a few it still looks like the sky and you can tell what it represents.. The quote is a famous quote from martin Luther king, he is a historical figure in life and this is something I wanted to show. His quote shows that we need to dream and follow our dreams. Something that I feel is important in life as well as the business and work side we have to have down time and dream big in life. It was perfect to represent this as it worked well with the clouds in the sky.

This graphic is about the land, sea and vegetation of the world, however this was just the representation and aspect it was showing. The meaning behind the image is that the world is getting industrialized and there are big cities growing and growing, farmland is getting smaller. Because of this I wanted some simple text just to make sure the message could be read simple and blunt. I imagined the text to be a long thin text, to represent the buildings and big cities. I also thought the text should be sans serif because this is a more modern typeface style which I think should be reflected in the graphic that’s representing the modern changing world.

MARK TWAIN INDUSTRIALISATION BUY LAND, NOBODY MAKES IT ANYMORE MARK TWAIN INDUSTRIALISATION BUY LAND, NOBODY MAKES IT ANYMORE MARK TWAIN INDUSTRIALISATION BUY LAND, NOBODY MAKES IT ANYMORE

[FINAL IDEA DEVELOPMENT]

I thought about representing land, sea and vegetation in the circular style but maybe not combined, as 3 separate sections, however when I created these, I liked the circles but I didn’t think they looked united when they were separate, I even tried overlapping them and I still wasn’t happy with the result. I also thought the contrast and bright colours were too harsh for what I was portraying. I wanted the graphic to be slightly saturated down so it was dull. I also thought it would make the type easier to read, as the bright colours distracted from this.

[FINAL IDEA DEVELOPMENT]

I then decided to make a background representing one thing then merge the other 2 element circles to produce these above, I was pleased with the outcome as it merged the 3 subjects together in an effective way without being too overpowering. I wanted to suggest the idea of industrialization on this one hence the word being the main focus, which is why I made the land background a small space, to represent the decrease in open land. The quote reinforces this with the fact that land is hard to find in masses now, its all being industrialized and built upon to create cities, jobs and housing. After I finished this graphic I realized that this would be the best way to do the graphics and make them link, I was to do them all in a circular way. [FINAL IDEA DEVELOPMENT]

This graphic represents day 3 of the creation process, land, sea and vegetation. I struggled to think of a creative idea to represent this without just having a photo of the subjects. And getting the right result took a lot of experimenting and brainstorming. I think the whole image and type go together well to cerate an atmosphere and message that I wanted to. The quote on the image was picked because the actual quote itself said by Mark Twain clearly says how land is scarce.

COMPLEXITY COMPLEXITY

This graphic is set around space, representing the sun, moon and stars. The graphic represents the sun moon and stars but the word complexity is the message within the representation. Put simply The message is that the world is a complex place, on and off the surface. I wanted the type to fit the theme of complexity as well as the space atmosphere. Therefore I tried many styles of type to get the two to combine. I realized this was going to be difficult as I had two completely different styles of type in my mind to begin with but i played around and found the ones I found most appropriate.

COMPLEXITY

COMPLEXITY

COMPLEXITY [FINAL IDEA DEVELOPMENT]

Carrying on the theme of manipulating images into circular pieces, I started on the sun moon and stars graphic. Like the land, sea and vegetation graphic, I made one of the subjects the background and combined the sun and moon together in a circular motion because again I thought all 3 elements would be too much and would not actually show the subjects themselves in a clear way. However I did want complexity to be shown in the image and therefore I decided to make a circular image and add another small one in the middle just to give more detail and reflect the reasoning behind the image, that the world is an complex place. Such as the things in it, how we work, and the future things to come. I wanted to show this through the complex system of space and planets how we know very little about the world we live in. I choose the obvious and most famous quote by Neil Armstrong when he was the first man to step on the moon in 1966. This shows the connection between space and man. I started positioning the graphic in different places and played around with the ways in which they were manipulated but I decided that the bottom left looked the best, zoomed in and simple background so the stars can be visible and more obvious. However I couldn’t get the right typography for the text relation itself so I kept experimenting with this.

[FINAL IDEA DEVELOPMENT]

When imagining this graphic I wanted type that represented space in an effective way. I wanted a sci-fi look however when I applied the typography above I was not sure that it worked how I had imagined. I think the missing lines make it hard to read especially with the busy background. This is when I knew I had to make the type simple as well as effective, so I ruled out some of the other types that were harder to read against the background. So I started with this type to the left, this was simple but looked right for the background image. I did ask opinions and this was the favorite. I wanted to see what people got from the image and one response I got was that the text was clear and the image worked well to portray the fusion of the solar system and the objects god made that day. My graphics are not portraying the religious side of the story of creation; they are simply representations of the things he created each day. I am concentrating on the changing of the world from then to now and the messages I can get across about the world.

[FINAL IDEA DEVELOPMENT]

I kept experimenting with the positioning of the text but I decided that the big word was best kept in the center, to follow the theme but also because its the main message its the first thing I want the viewers to see and to question. The quote is to back this up the person who said it is the way in which people can see the historical figures on earth. I played around with making the main word stand out but again simplicity seemed to work best so I kept all type white, it also meant that it stood out more.

[FINAL IDEA DEVELOPMENT]

After experimentation with this image I chose this one as my final representation graphic of the sun, moon and stars. I think the text shows the atmosphere of space better than the more formal, old-fashioned text. I wanted the type be relevant and fit with the theme, which I believe it does. The black and white against the bright orange makes these images stand out and highlights the sun against the moon and stars with the contrast being apparent. To tie the whole image together the text has to be incorporated with the image and to be seen as a single graphic rather than an image with text on top. To do this I added the orange quote, tying in with the typeface used. In this image the person who said the quote was important, he is a historic figure that first walked on the moon and his name is important which is why its slightly bigger. I found that the name was an important aspect of the message on this graphic because of his significance in science history. The message I wanted to portray was at how complex the world is including the aspects on and off the surface. I wanted to show that earth is not just what you see on the planet but a lot of it is done by other factors and it’s more complex than people give it credit for.

Sir David Attenborough “Man is by nature a political animal”

The next graphic is about how sea creatures and winged birds were made on the same day. I thought of an idea of representing them as opposites. One lives its life in the sky the other in the sea. Therefore I wanted to have type that split on a line and the image behind to have a definite line between the two. The text type was a difficult choice for me; I wanted it to be simple and readable as this graphic has a lot more meaning. I wanted the text to be straight, strong and bold representing the animal species and the way it had developed and changed. Because the image had the potential to be busy and crowded so I new the text needed to be simple to be readable. I considered that I might need drop shadows to highlight certain parts, if necessary.

[FINAL IDEA DEVELOPMENT]

My aim here was to show the distinct separation of these animals but also how they can come together. I brought the two creatures, sea and air together using the center, creating a half and half image and rotating it so that they were on opposite sides of there ‘territory’. I blended the two background images originally but I realized that this disrupted the contrast and separation between the two species. I struggled so much with the representation of these two then realized it was simple, all I had to do was show the distinct separation.

I then made the separation using the circular shape with images from the Internet that are credited in my bibliography. I liked the contrast of the busy underwater to the isolated sky because that is how I see the sky and sea. I played around with some contrasts and hues to see what effects I could get to represent and reinforce the message. Which is simply that there are thousands of species evolving over time in nature and that animals are a vital part of our life. I preferred the lighter versions of the

Image because I think it shows the freedom they have. Everything to me began to have a reason and the piece really came together. I then accidently colorized the image, however this gave me an idea when looking at it, the colour contrast is swapped for the land and sea and this shows the similarity and difference between sea and air creatures, I thought it was a good concept.

[FINAL IDEA DEVELOPMENT]

I played around with the effect until I got it to a point that I thought wasn’t too much and didn’t over power the image. I then started adding the type, this graphic of sea creatures and birds represents the nature aspect of our world and how we evolved from this and we wouldn’t survive without them. The quote from sir David Attenborough was carefully picked as he is the most well known nature documentaries in the world. This makes a clear statement one its own. He makes a connection between man and animal, the way nature and evolution connects.

I experimented with colours, layouts, fonts etc. and I knew that white text would work well however from far away it wasn’t the easiest to see so I added drop shadows, simple and subtle but very effective when reading it. I liked the contrast in the black and white writing as it reinforced the contrast element.

[FINAL IDEA DEVELOPMENT]

This is the final graphic representing day 5 of the creation process, sea creatures and birds. After looking at the two colour schemes I could have used, although I liked the colorized effect I think the faded colours gave a better effect and made the graphic easier to see. I showed this through the opposition of the two species with the divide between the page horizontally and the slight colour difference. I think the contrast works well and portrays the representation I was originally going for. The quote used by sir David Attenborough was intentional, because he is a massive icon in nature throughout the world. He has the most recognizable voice on TV. The saturation was changed slightly so that the colours were not so harsh and bright. And the type was chosen due to the experimentation when making the graphic, trying different fonts. Although the experimentation before starting the graphic gave me an idea on what fonts to play around with.

The type I believed needed to actually look intelligent, it needed to look sophisticated and solid. For most of these graphic the type has being simple with different things making them different because these things need to be readable to the outsiders. However I think this needs to be a block text, San serif or serif. Because it needs to be plain and simply put, without knowledge we would be nowhere.

On day 6 of the creation process, god created human beings and mammals. This is when the story of Adam and eve being placed on the planet started. I didn’t want to put an image of a man and a woman and make it very obvious, I wanted show all culture and races of people in the world, but again not in an obvious way so I used the circular method to overlap and create a merge of human being to me showing the community we have. The message about this representation of humans in the world is that we are knowledge, we are what changed the world, made it what it is today. Knowledge and education is one of the most important things in life we need and this graphic shows it perfectly. I tried it in many different colours however the brighter ones looked unrecognizable and the black and white then didn’t show skin tones and faces. I wanted the graphic to fit in so i decreased the saturation slightly and I think this gave the best effect. it also made the type easier to insert and made it more readable. The quote by Nelson Mandela was chosen on purpose, Nelson Mandela was one of the most famous people for changing our world and fighting for what he believed in, he showed courage, bravery, intelligence and knowledge, something all humans should have.

[FINAL IDEA DEVELOPMENT]

This graphic represents the day of rest; it is known that by day 6 God had finished the earth, and the 7th day was for rest. I wanted to represent all of these days in a non-obvious way. I initially thought about doing a graphic showing relax written in sand as this included the typography and the beach is associated with relaxation, or even to associate the image with water because this was the only solution I could think of to represent relaxation. I was struggling, but I then realized that I had to think in simple terms to create something less obvious but with impact. The water gave me an idea to use colour to represent the day 7. It had to be more creative and original. The quote from Dr. Seuss is one I picked because Dr. Seuss is a famous figure in our world and the quote he said bout just sitting back and relaxing sums up what our human nature needs to do sometimes, there is always time for a rest.

THE FUTURE/NOW

FUTURE FUTURE FUTURE FUTURE FUTURE FUTURE FUTURE

FUTURE FUTURE FUTURE FUTURE FUTURE FUTURE FUTURE

FUTURE FUTURE FUTURE FUTURE FUTURE FUTURE

When I thought about how I wanted this graphic to look, I imagined a modernist text, something like Helvetica, very simple plain and eye-catching. This is because the graphic represents the future, the technological change, which means I wanted to make sure the text was relevant. I wasn’t sure about the text completely so I experimented with many different ones, even ones I wasn’t sure about at first. This helped me to just experiment with the way the graphic looked.

Let’s go invent tomorrow’s future rather than worry about what happened yesterday...” Let’s go invent tomorrow’s future rather than worry about what happened yesterday...” Steve Jobs Let’s go invent tomorrow’s future rather than worry about what happened yesterday...” Steve Jobs Let’s go invent tomorrow’s future rather than worry about what happened yesterday...” [FINAL IDEA DEVELOPMENT]

Again I carried on the theme of circular images to make sure they all linked together I some way. I wanted to use the images I had taken from the parts of computers. I liked some of the experiments I did and the style however they didn’t fit in with the style of my final piece and idea and so I wanted to create something in the same style but was also relevant to my final idea. I changed the background changing them from the images of computer chips to the keyboard. I felt the same image being the background made everything blend into each other and I don’t think this gave a clear effect of the message I am trying to get across so I decided on using the keyboard, I also thought this represented our generation now. I played with the contrasts and brightness, however I don’t think the image could be changed dramatically without looking too edited. [FINAL IDEA DEVELOPMENT]

I couldn’t change the colour much with the saturation controls however I colorized the image and I got the top 3 outcomes, which I think give a good technological effect especially with the dark blue, however I found with the sea creature and bird image that colorizing images made it hard to find text that was appropriate as well as being able to read the writing clear enough. I played around with some fonts, I preferred the thin writing I think its quite simple and nice and the serif writing is more relevant to the topic, but the best type was the ones that looked computerized and typewriter like.

[FINAL IDEA DEVELOPMENT]

This is my final design for the future part of my piece. The purpose of this graphic was to be an addition to the 7 days of creation story; it shows how society is now and how we live now, compared to how it was when the story was first written. The aspects made are still here but there are some advances. The quote from Steve Jobs was carefully selected as it refers to how we cant look back into the past we have to look into the future with the new technology and the new way in which society works. The quote being from Steve Jobs is appropriate because he is the owner of apple, the biggest technology company in the world and this ties the whole thing together and will show people of the outside world what life is like now and how it could be in the future. I think the computer parts work well as the different parts are different sections and slightly different colours creating different shades and showing the diversity of technology but also showing that its all the same. The background being a keyboard represents how much people spend their life’s behind computers and on keyboards.

[FINAL IDEA DEVELOPMENT]

BOOKLET DESIGN When making these graphics I knew I would eventually want to put them all in order into a booklet form. However I didn’t know how I wanted to do this, I knew that the layout of the book should be simple, the graphics are the focal point and unnecessary parts would distract from this. I didn’t know whether I wanted to have the text and image on the same page, so I looked at some examples and although i like the one above in a mosaic pattern, I don’t have enough images to do this with, without sacrificing having a full booklet. I then decided after looking at the examples that I would have a very simple, image to a page and then writing relating to that image on the opposite side. I thought that the book couldn’t distract and be readable to everyone.

[BOOKLET DESIGN]

BOOKLET MAQUETTES After deciding what I wanted my book to contain I needed to work out how it was going to look in terms of how it folded and how it was used. I made some Marquette’s to help me visualize and I came to the conclusion that an average flick book, A5 size would be the best option. I did originally want something more unique however looking at my work and the purpose for it I think the best idea is to keep it simple, as my graphics have so many messages to take in already.
