Jack and Jill of America - Denver Chapter Beautillion 2016 Program

Page 1

The annual Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Denver Chapter Beautillion was established in 1983 by Denver Chapter member, Mrs. June Johnson to combat the negative television and news media imagery of African American young men. Mrs. Johnson, along with member Mrs. Winnie Johnson, determined that it was important to honor the accomplishments of African American high school young men. The vehicle they created to showcase them was an invitation only black tie affair they named the Beautillion. When presented with the idea, Denver Chapter members overwhelmingly voted to support the event. Mrs. Letitia Williams and Mrs. Berma Benson, along with Rhetta Shead, were the first to choreograph the specialty dance routines that make the Beautillion extraordinary. Since that time Mrs. Shead has choreographed each subsequent Beautillion – this being her 33rd! The Denver Chapter members established strict criteria for acceptance into the program. The young men have to be recommended during the second semester of their junior year of high school by their counselors or principals. They must have demonstrated outstanding achievements in academics, community service, athletics and other extracurricular activities. Finally, each Beau candidate has to complete a rigorous interview. During this time consuming process, it is not unusual to discover that many young men have excelled in spite of difficult circumstances. Over the course of three months, the Beaus (young men) are required to participate in a community service project and attend meetings and workshops. The Beaus also rehearse the intricate dance routines that will be performed at the Beautillion. During the Beautillion ceremony, each Beau is presented to the audience by the master of ceremony, who is himself an outstanding member of the community. As the Beau stands onstage, his honors and accomplishments are read to the audience after which the Beau then bows to the audience, descends the stairs, takes his escort’s hand and exits. After all the Beaus have been presented, they process into the ballroom to perform dance routines with their escorts and to dance with their mothers. The presentation ends after the Beaus assemble to take their final bows and acknowledge the enthusiastic applause from the audience.

On August 27, 2016 the Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Denver Chapter Beaus traveled to Historic Five Points Denver. There the Beaus learned about the rich history and culture of the district. Often called the “Harlem of the West, it was a frequent stop for jazz greats, including Billie Holliday and Louis Armstrong. Denver City Councilman Albus Brooks and Tracy Winchester, Executive Director of Five Points Business District also spoke to the Beaus about the $300 million dollar redevelopment on the Welton Street Corner. Following the presentation, the 23 Beaus cleaned the neighborhood by picking up trash, removing graffiti and painting dumpsters. Working alongside the Beaus were Jack and Jill Denver Chapter fathers. This community service project provided a great service, spread goodwill and made an immediate impact in the neighborhood. Well done, 2016 Beaus!

The criminal justice system in America is broken. We live in a country where Shanesha Taylor, a black mother, leaves her kids in the car for a thirty minute interview and faces ten days in jail, while Catalina Clouser, a white mother, can drive for twelve miles with her baby on the roof of her car and not get any jail time. The justice system could use some improvement, and I think through banning private prisons, and cracking down on racial profiling, we may just achieve that dream. Jails have been able to be bought by private interests for a very long time (since 1852 in fact). During the presidency of Ronald Reagan, however, they were pushed into the limelight. This did, of course, disproportionately affect African Americans. On top of that, Private Prison corporations actively lobby for more prisoners. One of these companies, The CCA, said in their 2010 annual report “[We] continue to persue a number of initiatives in order to increase our occupancy and revenue.” (Gaming The System, Justice Policy Institute 2011) This lobbying can force quotas for arrest rates and profiling. Banning private prisons and the lobbying for more arrests is needed in the fight to fix the system. More needed, however, is a permanent death for racial profiling. The thought in many justice institutions is that African Americans are inherently criminals. But the FBI says otherwise. “However, according to FBI crime statistics by race, it isn’t blacks who are driving criminal activity. Actually in 2014, blacks committed only 28.3% of all crimes.” (racisminamerica.org). Police Officers still disproportionately target black youth. Many African American men have been shot down for buying candy while many white people have pulled guns and not faced jail. There is something fundamentally wrong in human existence when brown skin is considered more dangerous than the barrel of a gun. The solution to this is not a simple one. Officers need to be held accountable for racial profiling. No ifs, ands, or buts, no “slaps on the wrist.” In order to stop this path of thought that it is okay to stop some one based solely on their race, we need actual consequences for these people. Another great option was the End Racial Profiling Act, that was unfortunately struck down in congress in 2011. The Criminal Justice System is supposed to work for us. It’s supposed to punish the bad and protect the good. However, that line has long been blurred in this country. If we do any of the things mentioned above, we might have a chance at real justice, at real peace in our community. But we as black youth have to mobilize. We are the future. It is everyone’s duty to fight for what they believe in, and using the skills I’ve learned over the past few months, I plan to do just that.
