December 22, 2018 Welcome to the 35th Annual Beautillion! We are honored to serve as Co-Chairs of the 2018 Denver Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc.’s presentation of outstanding young black men to the Denver community. With over 900 Beau alumni living and thriving throughout the United States, our Beautillion has left a rich legacy on our city, our state, and our country. This evening we celebrate 26 Beaus of high scholastic, extracurricular and civic achievement, and encourage them to create a legacy of their own. We appreciate you joining us to support these young men. We are their village and we must support them tonight and throughout their lifetime. This year’s theme is 35 Years a Legacy - It Takes a Village to Raise a King. We celebrate the longevity of Jack and Jill’s commitment to our Beaus and the community. We want to recognize the co-founders of this event - Mrs. June Johnson and Mrs. Winnie Johnson - for the gift they have given us. We honor them and all the members of the Denver Chapter of Jack and Jill of America who have worked so hard to sustain this legacy. We also want to thank the Belles (once known as Escorts) who have helped our Beaus shine tonight and over the last thirty-four years. Also, a special thanks to the families who have raised such deserving young men and women. We extend our deepest gratitude to our committee of more than thirty members, Associates, volunteers and countless community partners for helping to make this Beautillion happen. We have worked hard in preparation for this night. Our honorees took their responsibilities seriously. During workshops focused on civic engagement, they organized a debate between the candidates for Colorado Attorney General in October that was a standing-room only event. They were engaged at workshops conducted on etiquette, mental and physical health, media training, and leadership, taking away skills that will last them a lifetime. Thanks to our community partners and everyone that supported these programs and ensured that our Beaus would have a memorable experience. After thirty-five years, we are just getting started. May this tradition last forever. We need it as a community, and our young men and women deserve the affirmation of our Village. Ladies and Gentlemen, we proudly present the 2018 Jack and Jill Denver Beaus! Gratefully, Your 2018 Beautillion Co-Chairs Mrs. Lori Pace Mrs. Nina Henderson Moore

The annual Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Denver Chapter Beautillion was established in 1983 by Denver Chapter member, Mrs. June Johnson to combat the negative television and news media imagery of African American young men. Mrs. Johnson, along with member Mrs. Winnie Johnson, determined that it was important to honor the accomplishments of African American high school young men. The vehicle they created to showcase them was an invitation only black tie affair they named the Beautillion. When presented with the idea, Denver Chapter members overwhelmingly voted to support the event. Mrs. Letitia Williams and Mrs. Berma Benson, along with Rhetta Shead, were the first to choreograph the specialty dance routines that make the Beautillion extraordinary. Since that time Mrs. Shead has choreographed each subsequent Beautillion – this being her 34th! The Denver Chapter members established strict criteria for acceptance into the program. The young men have to be recommended during the second semester of their junior year of high school by their counselors or principals. They must have demonstrated outstanding achievements in academics, community service, athletics and other extracurricular activities. Finally, each Beau candidate has to complete a rigorous interview. During this time consuming process, it is not unusual to discover that many young men have excelled in spite of difficult circumstances. Over the course of three months, the Beaus (young men) are required to participate in a community service project and attend meetings and workshops. The Beaus also rehearse the intricate dance routines that will be performed at the Beautillion. During the Beautillion ceremony, each Beau is presented to the audience by the master of ceremony, who is himself an outstanding member of the community. As the Beau stands onstage, his honors and accomplishments are read to the audience after which the Beau then bows to the audience, descends the stairs, takes his escort’s hand and exits. After all the Beaus have been presented, they process into the ballroom to perform dance routines with their escorts and to dance with their mothers. The presentation ends after the Beaus assemble to take their final bows and acknowledge the enthusiastic applause from the audience.

2018 Beau Service Project COLORADO CANDIDATE FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL DEBATE October 20, 2018 | Dayton Opportunity Center | Aurora, CO The 2018 Beau’s work on civic engagement culminated in a standing room only debate between the two Colorado Attorney General Candidates – George Brachler and Phil Weiser. The Beaus were joined by community partners Colorado Black Women for Political Action (CBWPA), Den-ver Justice Project, Denver Ministerial Alliance, YAASPA, Colorado Black Legislative Caucus, and the NAACP. Special Thanks to Mrs Maisha Fields, Senator Rhonda Fields, Mrs. Angela Garland, Brother Jeff, and CME Catering and Events.

Bill Pickett Rodeo Essay Grand Prize Winner Ever since I can remember, my parents took my sisters and I to the polls to watch them vote. I turned 18 in September 2018. This was my first chance to vote in an election. I knew I would not be wasting this constitutional right. As a member of the 2018 Jack and Jill Beautillion, I was part of a service project that organized and oversaw a debate between two Attorney General candidates. Since we were hosting the event, each one of us was given a job to do to help the debate move along smoothly. My job was the debate timekeeper, informing the candidates how much time they have left before they must allow the other one to speak or give a rebuttal. This forced me to really pay attention and listen carefully to what the two candidates had to say. From that, I learned the importance of the attorney general and all the power they hold within the community. As I listened to some of the responses given to these questions, I realized that I did not always agree with the candidate’s stance on an issue. This really opened my eyes to the importance of voting locally. Some people only vote every four years, during the presidential election. However, it is during local and midterm elections that real, visible change can start to occur in our communities. I believe local elections have an immediate, long lasting impact that decide issues such as funding schools and education, giving money to fix roads or create jobs, and determining who oversees our justice system from the attorney general, judges and sheriff. By voting consistently and in all local elections, I can help decide who is the mayor, councilwoman, county assessor or even school board member. These are the people that make daily decisions about my everyday life. Also, many of these local politicians continue on to become our state senators, governors and even presidents. Many of the local races are decided by a few hundred votes. My senior high school graduating class is over 600 students. If every one of my fellow classmates was able and did vote, we could be the deciding factor in any election. People in this county and across the world have fought and died for the right to vote. No vote is a wasted vote. After I assisted in organizing an election debate, I fully understand my role in molding the future of this community. For this election, I had to vote on 15 state/federal/ municipal offices,18 judges and 16 amendments or propositions. I was very happy to see that many of the candidates I voted for won. In the age of social media and social protests, I can still take a stand at the ballot box, I know my vote counts.
