The local scene
A
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I must again report several exciting tennis activities in Oklahoma; someone has to do it. For the recreational player, the TCT (Tulsa Competitors of Tulsa) league is in full-swing with over 600 players participating. Many local competitors and enthusiasts seized the opportunity to watch players ranked among the world’s top 200 apply expert court skills during the 2010 USTA Challenger of Oklahoma, hosted by Philcrest Hills Tennis Club. The tournament ended September 19th, and unseeded Bobby Reynolds showed everyone he is still a force in men’s professional tennis. Next on the horizon are two more high profile events, scheduled back-to-back, at The University of Tulsa’s Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Beginning October 2nd, there will be 256 of the best men’s college players in town to participate in the D’Novo/ITA Men’s Tennis All-American Championships. Several past champions have established highly successful careers as professional players following the AllAmerican tournament. As the D’Novo All-American Championships conclude, top junior players from the Americas (boys and girls, age 18 and under, from North, South and Central America) will descend upon the TU campus for qualifying rounds of the Arthur E. Tucker/ITF Pan American Championships. Tournament play begins October 9th and the championships are decided on October 17th. Two players from Oklahoma are competing in the tournament: Madison Westby from Tulsa and Spencer Papa from Edmond. Both Madison and Spencer start competing in the qualifying rounds as they are 14 year-olds and challenging older players. Plan to attend the tournament from the start and watch these two players progress. Next month, Oklahoma Tennis Magazine will have the flavor of a holiday issue with thoughtful gift ideas for that special tennis player in your life. The issue will also carry updates on the three Tulsa-area teams participating in USTA national competition during the month of October: LaFortune Sands 2.5 Adult Women and Maxwell 3.0 Sr. Women, and Philcrest Hale 4.5 Adult Women. Please remember to send your questions, comments, and postings of scheduled tennis events to: readercomments@oktennismag.com. See you on the courts.

SPOTLIGHT
Spencer Papa N No More Tears for
Not too long after taking up the game, Spencer Papa would come home following drills at an Edmond tennis club close to tears. Not from frustration over his form, but frustration over playing time—he wanted more of it. That’s no longer a problem for the 14-year-old rising tennis star. Today, he is one of a select few junior tennis players in the country at the USTA’s Boca Raton, Florida, Training Center— where he gets all the playing time he wants. From tennis club drills to national prominence, it has been quite a journey for a pee-wee soccer player who found his game at the age of five, and won his first major tournament at the age of eight. That journey includes three weeks in a junior tournament in Spain last May, as well as a wild card into the 2010 U.S. Junior Open Division. Qualifying as a 14-year-old in the 18-and-under division, he won his first match against a 17-year-old player from Brazil; the journey now brings Papa to Tulsa. This Edmond tennis star will be among the field in the Arthur E. Tucker ITF Pan-American Championship, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on The University of Tulsa campus, beginning October 11th. (Papa, by the way, turns 15 on October Spencer won the Texoma Junior 22nd.) Circuit Boys 14 at age 10. His father Todd, a former recreational player in California, was

Spencer’s first coach. The young lad needed no prodding; he played and practiced every day regardless of the weather. His first victory in an Oklahoma City tournament was a prelude to a career that has included wins against older players and domination in the Missouri Valley Tennis Association. If he had not already done so, Papa truly captured the attention of national tennis powers in August 2008. That’s when he won a pair of USTA Junior National Tennis titles in Little Rock, Arkansas. Seeded eighth, he worked his way through seven rounds in the Boys 12 Singles tournament and also won the Doubles crown, with partner Jacob Dunbar of Ohio. Currently, he is one of fourteen boys and six girls receiving coaching at the USTA Training Center where his academic studies continue through Kaplan Virtual Education. His experiences are thrusting him more and more into the national spotlight—his wild card into the U.S. Junior Tournament found him warming up Sam Querry with Rafael Nadal and Robin Soderling on courts either side of him. From every report, Papa - despite his success, remains firmly grounded. His coach on the tournament trip to Spain praised his behavior and manners, and if further proof were necessary, Papa won the sportsmanship award for his division at the Palm Springs Easter Bowl. Nowadays the only people close to tears around Spencer Papa may be those he meets on the tennis court. • Oklahoma Tennis Magazine October 2010 9

Once a year the greatest collegiate tennis players from around the country descend upon Tulsa and embark on a nine-day quest to become a national champion. The time has come for the 2010 D’Novo/ITA Men’s Tennis All-American Championships, which begin October 2 and run through October 10. The nation’s top male collegiate tennis players are slated to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) first national event of the 2010-11 season. The tournament opens with six rounds of prequalifying and qualifying matches for both singles and doubles on . The University of Tulsa will be hosting the tournament for the fourth-straight year and for the sixth year overall. The event will take place at Case Tennis Center on the TU campus. “Tulsa is one of the cities in the country that really embraces this event,” The University of Tulsa Head Men’s Tennis Coach Vince Westbrook said. “It’s located in the middle of the country, and is easy to get in and out of. We have plenty of hotel space, and a nice, midsized city with an international airport.” 10 Oklahoma Tennis Magazine October 2010
Highlighting this year’s men’s singles field of 256 participants is top seed John-Patrick Smith of the University of Tennessee. Last year Smith became only the third player in history, and the first since 1998, to win both singles and doubles titles at the ITA All-American Championships. Smith defeated Oklahoma’s Andrei Daescu 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 in the championship match. The team of Smith and Boris Conkic defeated Oklahoma State’s Oleksandr Nedovyesov and Aleksey Bessonov 8-4 to claim the doubles crown. Nedovyesov was runner up in the singles competition in 2008 and ITA Player of Year in 2009. Smith is the No. 1-ranked player in the country, according to recently released 2010 Campbell/ITA Preseason Singles Rankings. He held the top spot for nearly half of last season. Also highlighting this year’s field and rounding out the top 10 men’s singles Campbell/ITA Preseason rankings are (in order): Henrique Cunha of Duke, Bradley Klahn of Stanford, Guillermo Gomez of Georgia Tech, Chase Buchanan of Ohio State, Michael Shabaz of Virginia, Steve Johnson of Southern California, Eric Quigley of Kentucky, Alex Lacroix of Florida and Austen Childs of Louisville. The doubles field includes Duke’s top-ranked duo of Cunha and Reid Carleton, who were named the 2010 Campbell/ITA Men’s Doubles Team of the Year. “This is the biggest event of all the men’s tournaments during the year,” Westbrook said. “Everyone has access to get into this www.oktennismag.com
event, from prequalifying all the way through to the main draw. Everybody has a chance to get in, and you can go from the prequalifying rounds to winning a national title all in the same tournament. That’s one of the reasons these nine days are so special.” Past ITA All-American champions include current professionals Benjamin Becker (Baylor), James Blake (Harvard), Arnau Brugues (Tulsa), Bob and Mike Bryan (Stanford), John Isner (Georgia), and Kevin Kim (UCLA). Competing in the Main Draw for The University of Tulsa are junior Ashley Watling, sophomore Marcelo Arevalo, and freshman wildcard Clifford Marslund. Arevalo was ranked No. 34 in the nation in the preseason polls, and Watling, a quarterfinalist from a year ago, was tabbed No. 39. The three members of the Golden Hurricane who will begin competition in the qualifying stage are sophomores Alastair Barnes, Grant Ive, and wildcard Tristan Jackson. Juniors Patrick Collins and Rusty Turpin are slated to begin playing in the prequalifying rounds. Barnes and Ive are entered in the Main
Draw of doubles competition as a wildcard. Watling and Marslund, the No. 38-ranked doubles team in the nation, will begin competition in the qualifying stage, and Turpin and Arevalo will be a wildcard in the same stage. “Hopefully we’ll have the weather that we’ve come to know and love in Tulsa,” Westbrook said. “The overall expectation for the TU kids is that we want them to perform to their abilities and use this event to get themselves into the national rankings. For those already in the national rankings like Marcelo and Ashley, we want them to use this event to improve those rankings.” Complete Campbell/ITA College Rankings and men’s and women’s ITA AllAmerican Championship information can be found at www.itatennis.com. Arnau Brugues is arguably the greatest athlete to ever walk the campus of The University of Tulsa. He spent four years as a member of the Golden Hurricane men’s tennis team from 2006-09, breaking numerous records and winning a plethora of championships. Brugues came to Tulsa from Barcelona, Spain, and put the entire nation on notice right away after posting a 19-3 singles mark in spring of 2006 and advancing to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Singles Championship. He boasted an impressive 11-2 record against ranked opponents and ended his first spring campaign ranked No. 7 in the nation by the Campbell/ITA Division I Men’s Tennis Rankings. In his first fall campaign at TU, Brugues became the first National Champion in school history as he claimed the 2006 Polo Ralph Lauren/ITA All-American Singles Championship. The event was held at the Case Tennis Center in Tulsa. “Winning the All-American Championship was one of the best accomplishments of my life, and it was probably the highlight of my
www.oktennismag.com
college career,” Brugues said. “It was amazing to win such an important tournament in Tulsa in front of my teammates, family and friends. My parents came to visit me during the week, and winning in front of them was the best feeling. It was a very special moment, and I have to thank my coaches and teammates because I could not have done it without their help and support.” He won six-straight matches against ranked competition in the tournament and never dropped a set. In the championship match, Brugues took down defending champion John Isner of Georgia 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. 2006-09 Golden “At the time, John was one of the best Hurricane tennis players in college,” Brugues said. “I will always standout Arnau remember the talk I had before the match Brugues. with my coaches – they all told me that most people in college tennis expected me to lose, but they believed in me and they knew I Brugues compiled an overall 31-7 could do it. I fought as hard as I could, and record as a sophomore and advanced to I tried my best because I wanted to make my the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles family and coaches proud. John is No. 23 in Championship. He was 17-6 against ranked the world right now and that makes the win Contiued on page 13 even more special to me.” Oklahoma Tennis Magazine October 2010 11

Contiued from page 11 foes and climbed all the way to No. 2 in the nation at one point during the spring season. He continued his stellar play throughout his junior year, posting a 22-9 mark on the season and advancing again to the round of 16 at the NCAA Tournament. In the fall of his senior campaign, Brugues partnered with Philip Stephens and claimed second place 2006 Champion Arnau Brugues at the D’Novo/ITA All-American and TU coach Vince Westbrook. Championships in the doubles competition. He set the school record for wins in a single season during his senior campaign, compiling a 44-4 mark in 2009. He also finished 29-4 against ranked opponents, and during that same time he reached the pinnacle of NCAA ranks. On Feb. 19, 2009, Brugues was bestowed the distinction of becoming the first player in school and Conference USA history to earn the No. 1 ranking in the country. He held the top spot for 11 weeks throughout his senior season, and finished 2009 as the No. 2 ranked player in the country. Overall, Brugues compiled a school record of 116 wins to just 23 losses in singles action during his time at The University of Tulsa. He led TU to four-straight Conference USA Championships and was named Conference USA Player of the Year, all four years of his collegiate career. He was a four-time All-American and also received numerous academic awards. “A player like Arnau Brugues comes once in a lifetime,” University of Tulsa Head Men’s Tennis Coach Vince Westbrook said. “He is the kind of player who is very focused on both athletic performance and academics, and he follows through on his commitments. He’s one of those guys who always seems to rise to the top. I am very proud to have been his coach.” When Brugues graduated from Tulsa in 2009, he joined the ATP World Tour and started with a world ranking that was near No. 900. He was the fastest rising star on tour as it took him just one year to climb all the way to No. 218 in the world. He has since slipped to his current ranking of No. 277, only because he has been unable to play since suffering a season-ending injury during qualifying at the 2010 Wimbledon Championships. He will begin competing again in January with the goal of becoming one of the top 100 players in the world. “I am going to give everything I have left inside to accomplish my goal,” Brugues said. “I am very lucky to be out on tour playing, and this could not be possible without Tulsa’s help.” Brugues also plans on returning to Tulsa in the future to finish his MBA degree. He says attending The University of Tulsa was the best decision he ever made. “Tulsa is a great school with great academics and a great tennis team,” Brugues said. “For me, however, the most important thing was the people that surrounded me. In Tulsa, they care about you not only as an athlete, but also as a person. They do everything to make you feel like you’re home. I can never thank Vince and Dean Orford (head women’s tennis coach) enough for everything they’ve done for me. Those two will always be family to me.” • www.oktennismag.com

Major Junior Tournament at TU’s Case Center
O By John Hamill
One of the three top junior tournaments in the United States comes to The University of Tulsa campus in October, with more than 200 talented players from the U.S., Canada, and Central and South America taking to the courts in the Arthur E. Tucker ITF Pan American Championship. The 18-and-under tournament is ranked among the top three in the country along with the U.S. Open Jr. Division and the Orange Bowl Tournament. Qualifying for Boys’ and Girls’ singles begins October 9 at noon, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center at TU. The main draw for Boys’ and Girls’ singles begins October 11 at noon, and Boys’ and Girls’ doubles main draw is October 12 at noon. The tournament will conclude on October 17. Joining the anticipated stellar field of international participants will be two local favorites and rising stars: Tulsa’s Madison Westby and Edmond’s Spencer Papa. Sally Fink of Hot Springs, Arkansas is tournament director and Ken McCain is referee. Tulsa’s Airport Radisson Inn serves as the event’s official hotel. The tournament is named in honor of long-time University of Tulsa supporter and graduate, Arthur E. Tucker—far better known in the Tulsa community as Gene Tucker. His contributions to his alma mater are numerous, including the Tucker Family Tennis Court at the Case Center, and contributions to TU’s marching band. The University of Tulsa’s “front door” on 11th Street is named Tucker Drive in his honor - with the University’s address of 600 S. Tucker Drive, rather than the traditional 600 S. College Avenue reflecting the high esteem for Gene Tucker within the TU community. Tucker’s tennis legacy continues through son Trent, who is tennis pro at the Grand Health & Racquet Club and operator of the Trent Tucker Academy. Gene Tucker passed away in July 2008. •

PRO TIPS
The Overhead By Brad Richison, USPTA Certified Teaching Pro
T
All great strokes start with the proper grip; the purpose of the grip is to assure the correct racquet angle when contacting the ball. The proper grip for the overhead, volley and serve is the continental grip. The first ready position is to turn your whole body and prepare your racquet before dropping down the back. You should be keyed in to moving your feet to get under the ball before contact. At this point, your racquet is prepared down your back, as if you were serving. Just as a pitcher throws a baseball, you are basically throwing your racquet head up to hit the ball at full height extension. Don’t forget to snap your wrist on contact to create speed and control. •

Every year, Philcrest hosts a professional Challenger tournament with players ranked in the world top 200. It has been shown that if children develop healthy habits at an early age, they are more likely to continue these habits for the remainder of their lives. Former ORU Division 1 tennis player Taylor Wade is Founder and Coach of More Than Tennis Camp. Wade grew up training at Sekou Bangoura International Tennis Academy in Florida and has played Canadian Davis Cup, Missouri Valley and USTA Nationals. He has also assisted with coaching the Monte Cassino Tennis Team and the top junior’s tennis program in San Jose, Costa Rica. Wade says, “More Than Tennis Camp really is more than just any ordinary tennis camp. It incorporates Wii Tennis as a way to learn scoring, groundstrokes, court strategy, and ball placement. This visual-aid learning is put into action on the real tennis courts immediately following Wii sessions. Because children are so visual, this new system of learning rapidly increases the child’s growth in tennis. During the first camp held in spring of 2010, players who had never picked up a racquet before were able Josh Moore to hold a rally within only weeks!” More Than Tennis Camp has an overall goal to positively impact American youth by helping kids grow into healthy and fit individuals. This camp is unique in that it uses the very culprit for child inactivity - video games - to combat inactivity and literally get kids off the couch and onto the tennis courts. It’s not only about developing the child’s game of tennis - it’s about building healthy lifestyles. More Than Tennis Camp is set to continue in the spring of 2011 with even larger plans. These plans include implementing camps in public school systems nationwide, as an after-school activity for children. Most children sit in an after-school care program for the majority of the afternoon. By offering this camp on-site, it will be extremely convenient for kids to get involved, get active, make friends, and gain skills to a sport that can be played throughout their entire lives. The primary goal of More Than Tennis Camp is to build physical health, condition mental strategies, Camp Director Taylor Wade strengthen self-esteem, and develop with camper Andrew Cross. social adeptness in the youth of America. D'Novo Creates Perfect Alliance
T
The D’Novo/ITA Division I Men’s Tennis All-American Championships are held annually in Tulsa, Okla. This is the largest collegiate tennis event in the country. The tournament will take place October 1-10, at the Case Tennis Center on the campus of The University of Tulsa. Sponsoring this year’s spectacular event is the company, D’Novo Lean Gourmet. “We’re proud to join with The University of Tulsa and the ITA to bring you the largest event in college tennis – the D’Novo AllAmerican Championships,” D’Novo President Anna Hollinger said. “Sponsoring this tournament is an extension of our commitment to promoting a healthier, more active lifestyle. It also gives D’Novo an opportunity to help shine the national spotlight on the Tulsa community and The University of Tulsa. Like D’Novo, the tennis program at TU is committed to excellence. It is the perfect alliance.” D’Novo, a gourmet food company based in Tulsa, offers a variety of wonderful, healthy choices. There are two main avenues to enjoy the amazing selections: the first is a daily delivery option in which D’Novo will plan, prepare and deliver - to home or office - delicious gourmet foods for breakfast, lunch, dinner or snack. The total number of calories provided in daily plan can be controlled: for example, the 1,500 calorie limit is an ideal option for health-conscious and/or busy individuals. “Being affiliated with a company whose main business is providing healthy menus and healthy choices that consider people’s diets, is something we as a tennis program are proud to support,” University of Tulsa, Head Men’s Tennis Coach Vince Westbrook said. “Combining that philosophy with tennis is the perfect fit.” The second option is to check out the “fast casual” restaurant, conveniently located at 61st and Yale in KingsPointe Village. Every meal on the menu is less than 500 calories. Executive Chef Drew Flatt has worked closely with on-staff nutritionist to design the unique lunch and dinner menus at D’Novo. Each menu features a wide array of high-quality, nutritious, and delicious food from a variety of cuisines, including Italian, Asian, French, and Continental. Specialties include: Ahi tuna, Asian salad with oil and vinegar, rock shrimp flatbread with avocado, cilantro pesto and queso fresco, London broil over mashed sweet potatoes, and chocolate flourless cake with sweet ice cream. Coach Westbrook raves about how important D’Novo has been in helping showcase this annual tournament. “It starts with the CEO of the company, Anna Hollinger,” 26 Oklahoma Tennis Magazine October 2010
D’Novo features a wide array of high-quality, nutritious and delicious food from a variety of cuisines, including Italian, Asian, French and Continental in a ‘fast casual’ atmosphere.
Westbrook said. “She has a deep love for this community and a great appreciation for what The University of Tulsa and the University’s tennis teams are trying to do here in the city. This event will bring to Tulsa anywhere from 350-400 of the best men’s tennis players from around the country; we would not be able to host the largest NCAA event if it were not for D’Novo. We truly appreciate everything they do for us.” Hollinger also owns a restaurant called LXI, which is located next door to D’Novo in KingsPointe Village and provides patrons with an ambience that’s more Manhattan than Midwest. LXI is an upscale, small plates and wine bar with an ultra-sleek atmosphere paired with gourmet offerings of fine wines and delicious food. LXI boasts a distinctive menu across a variety of cuisines; specialties range from oven-fired flatbreads to seared scallops over sweet corn cakes with orange maple butter. In addition, LXI has a wine list that is unrivaled in Tulsa and Happy Hour drink specials are served from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday. • www.oktennismag.com

Tennis Parents continued from page 30 3. Find a coach who has the personality, time, experience, and proven track record to develop your child and to help them reach their goals. 4. Maintain an open and honest relationship with the coach, to manage expectations and to continue learning how to address the challenges and demands that tennis puts on young players and their families. 5. Unconditional love and learning to listen is the best role for a parent after a loss. 6. Tennis is a marathon. Resist the tendency to see the development process as a sprint - results come at unexpected times and many factors contribute to a player’s success. 7. Discipline your child for behavior on the court based on your family values, but also allow the coach full authority to discipline on tennis-related issues. 8. Remain emotionally neutral during match play. Players at a young age are highly sensitive to their parents’ reactions which can be a distraction. One of the most common problems is that parents often behave as if they are the ones playing the game - talking on behalf of the player or making excuses. Here are some typical examples from parents: “We didn’t play our best today.” “Little Johnny didn’t play his best game today.” “We were cheated out of the match.” “The other parent affected the match.” “If little Susie could just move her feet.” “We can’t play pushers.” “I just want to see Johnny attack more.” “My kid is working on his power game, that’s why we lost.” This type of behavior slows down the learning process and fuels more excuses, disallowing the real coach from being truly effective. To maximize growth, there needs to be only one coach. It is understandable that parents search for answers and explanations. But since the parent typically has little or no true expertise as a tennis coach, the best solution is to yield to the advice of the hired expert. It’s like trying to tell a doctor what the problem is - you might be right but you’re not a doctor with training and expertise to make the diagnosis. Contrary to what some may believe, having a sports background, even at a very experienced level,
does not qualify or equip a parent for the developmental process required to take a junior player through all the complicated stages of becoming a high-level tennis player. I recently attended the Boys ,18s national championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and was astounded to see the best 192 players in the country came to play with their coaches, not parents. About 80% of players came with coaches versus 20% of players with parents. It is not a coincidence that the best players have achieved success through coaches and academies managing their development process, and the parents supporting from home. Long term it is better for the player to travel with the coach, learning how to be responsible for preparation and equipment. Independence while traveling creates maturity in the player. In the past decade, American junior players fell behind globally because this was not the prevailing philosophy. Players in other countries consistently travel in groups with a coach, learning time management and how to overcome obstacles on their own - at a younger age. Over the course of the last several years, I’ve had the great pleasure of working with some parents who entrusted me with managing the development of their children’s tennis. The whole process was tremendously rewarding for the players, the families, my staff and me. These parents assisted me when needed and supported their children without becoming controlling or overly involved. It’s a delicate balance. As a team, all played critical roles but the player was primary focus. This fall, eight of those boys went on to play Division 1 college tennis. Upon reflection, I realized there could be no greater proof that the guidelines listed above lead to success. As you can see there is much to say about the topic of tennis parenting; I would like to close with the best advice I know. In my opinion, my late father Gene Tucker was one of the greatest tennis parents of all time. He never played the game yet unconditionally supported my dream of playing tennis. Dad would watch my matches and afterward ask how I did. If I answered, “I lost,” he would respond, “How about a hot fudge sundae?” A final thought:
None of us want to be known as the “Crazy Mom” or “Lunatic Dad” at the baseball field or at the PTA meeting or on the tennis court. Sometimes, the Mama/Papa bear instinct just makes us go rabid. It’s not a pretty sight, nor a favorable childhood memory. The reality is that most of our children are not going to be tennis stars. Twenty years from now, little Rafally isn’t going to remember the tournament tiebreaker loss of 2010. “After all those lessons, and you still can’t hit a decent forehand? What a waste of time and money!” ...That, he will remember. •

The Art of the “Tennis Parent”
I
It’s a 90-degree afternoon on a Tulsa tennis court; some pre-teens are battling to hold serve and net a win without suffering leg cramps, severe dehydration or mental sabotage. Like the blistering heat searing through the best tennis shoes money can buy, tempers flicker a few times - then ignite into a raging fireball of emotion. Someone calls someone a cheater. Every line call launches a battle. Someone fires back a #^@* and then turns it into an adverb, adjective, verb and a noun. Expensive sunglasses come off. Imaginary boxing gloves come on. Water bottles are hurled across the court. Right before the recessive junior-high fight gene flares into a fistflying-faux-Mohammed-Ali-foot-shuffle of a bad idea, the players stop play to watch. Tennis parents, anyone?
Sound like every sports-themed Disney movie you’ve ever watched? Think again, Mighty Duck VII. In ESPN’s list of the top 10 most harmful relatives in sports, three of the crazed kinfolk (Damir Dokic, Jim Pierce and Peter Graf) belong to the world of tennis. Area coaches have watched parents lose it off and on the court for years. Stop by any local club during the week following a major juniors’ tournament, and you will hear the kind of lying-cheating-nogood serenade usually reserved for country radio. Bad spectatorship happens - in every sport.
Cheerleader Mom. Baseball Dad. Football Granny. Whether it’s a former all-star high school player who has major dreams for his son or a 1980s Martina wanna-be with bad knees, parents of today’s athletes can be more painful and damaging than an ACL injury. If you want to help clean it up off the local courts, read these paraphrased LOCAL stories and reap some important “What Not to Do And Say as a Tennis Parent” advice. And yes, we’re leaving out names to protect both the innocent and not-so innocent. Former college player/tennis pro: About the worst thing that I’ve ever seen is two dads getting into a fistfight because of a line call. One of them shouted something like, “I’m not going to take it anymore,” and threw a punch. Before anyone could stop it blood was flying everywhere. Tennis parent: My son was playing against another boy in a tournament and the boy’s father just constantly kept berating his own son. At one point the dad said, “Will you hurry up and lose so 30 Oklahoma Tennis Magazine October 2010
we can get back to the hotel?” When my son would win the point, dad would shout, “Good shot.” I felt terrible for the other kid and it clouded any good shot that my son made. I wanted to just go out and give the kid a hug. Tennis professional/junior program coordinator: During a 10-under match, there was a parent who cheated our player out of a point strictly through intimidation. He actually walked out on the court and bullied this young player into giving up a match-deciding point. Former tennis prodigy/coach: You can usually spot the rabid tennis parents pretty easily. They start a conversation with, “I’m not one of those wacky tennis parents BUT.” What bothers you the most is when you have a kid with talent, but you can’t get past the parents. Instead of telling you everything they know about their kid’s game, parents should take the time to learn what the tennis professional can do to help the player improve their game. Isn’t that the goal? Here’s our expert advice:
Trent Tucker Missouri Valley coach of the year, USPTA Level 1 Director, Trent Tucker Tennis Academy Grand Health and Racquet Club The Art of the “Tennis Parent”
How to be a great tennis parent versus parent of a successful tennis player has been a topic of controversy for many years. In my opinion, if the parent loves their child unconditionally, win or lose, you have mastered the first stage of becoming a great tennis parent. If you try to control the development process by acting as the coach, then you run the risk of losing your child from the sport and possibly damaging your relationship for years to come. In my 11 years of coaching and running a junior tennis academy, I’ve seen every approach to parenting a player and have come up with this list of proven guidelines for being a successful tennis parent. 1. Instead of trying to COACH your child, offer the support they need emotionally and financially to reach their personal goals. 2. Encourage your child to speak with their coach before and after matches which allows you to parent and love, and remain clear of being placed in a position to coach.
