LEARN TO
PLAY O
ver the last few months, I have tried to convey information about every piece of equipment that you would need to enjoy or enhance your running experience. However, the most important item in this whole fitness equation is your body. If your body is not ready or prepared to handle the rigors of running, you will experience a lot of discomfort or pain. There are several ways to get into running, the simplest way I can think of, is the walkrun method. That is to walk for three to five minutes and then try a slow jog for a minute or two and then go back to walking. You can slowly increase your running time and reduce your walking time and you will eventually be running the whole time. Don’t increase your speed or distance more than about ten percent a week. You will find in a short period of time you will be running as long as you want. Jeff Galloway has devised a very successful run-walk program that many people use to run marathons. The major point of exercise is that one must enjoy it or learn to enjoy it. When we were kids we would go out and play and this playing was the exercise our body needed to grow and develop in a healthy way. When we became adults we somehow forgot about needing exercise. Think of yourself as a bear that hibernates in the winter. When he stops
moving, his body starts to retain weight to keep him alive through the winter. The same thing happens to us if we stop exercising; our bodies think we are going into hibernation and we quickly gain weight. The human body was made and meant to move or it doesn’t function properly. The old saying of “move it or lose it” is true. You can say whatever you want to about not having the time or motivation to exercise but the only thing you have control over in your life is how you spend your time. Some of that time needs to be spent helping your body and mind function better by exercising. One of the best ways to get the most out the limited time most people have to exercise is the use of a heart rate monitor. Heart rate monitors are made by such companies as Polar, Timex and Nike and retail for about $50 to $150.You will want to find your target heart rate which can be found by subtracting your age from 220. Once you obtain your target heart rate, take 65% of it for your low reading and 85% of it for your high reading and that will give you a zone to work in. Try to keep your workouts in those zones and you will find your time is being used very efficiently to obtain the most benefit. Good luck in whatever program you choose but just find something you enjoy and stay with it for the rest of your life.

Coach Celia Dubey
From Complaint to Compliant
My friend Lynn is unreasonably afraid of any type of medical issue. The mere
thought of her going to a doctor freaks her out so much that she spends hours playing out the worse case scenario in her head & avoiding the doctor all together. For the
last few MONTHS, she was constantly complaining about this pain in her foot.
This is how our conversations would go. Lynn: “My foot still hurts, what do you think it is?” Me: “I did not go to medical school. You need to see a doctor. Lynn: “Seriously what if it’s cancer?”
Me: “I highly doubt you have cancer of the foot.”
Lynn: “Ok, worse case scenario what do you think it is?”
Me: “It’s been hurting you well over a week so I think the best thing for you to do is make an appointment with a podiatrist and let a medical professional help you.”
The last time we had this conversation I added “If you don’t make an appointment
with a doctor I will never talk with you again” :0) I then gave her the contact info of my podiatrist.
So she did. She finally made an appointment with Dr Sal.
You see Lynn is one of those friends that I would do anything for so I went to the doctor appointment with her. Dr Sal diagnosed her with plantar fasciitis.
Dr Sal
gave Lynn specific instructions on what to do in order to alleviate the pain AND how to rehab herself so she can avoid this from happening again.
To my SURPRISE, Lynn did EVERYTHING Dr Sal advised her to do. She threw out
her flip flops that were causing the problem. She wore the orthotic piece he made for her to relieve the pain so she could walk. She did the exercises he gave her to do.
She changed out her walking shoes & running shoes to the ones he recommended.
Walla, like magic her pain subsided & two weeks later she was able to run again.
To my SURPRISE at the follow up appointment, Dr Sal told Lynn “wow, you are the most compliant patient I have ever dealt with”.
And right there I had an “aha” moment. There is only the placement of the letter
“I” that makes the word change from complaint to compliant and it’s only “I” that
can decide to stop to complain become compliant to resolve the matter. Hmmmm…
So if you have a nagging pain, please go seek the help of a medical professional and do what it takes to make yourself well again. Written by Coach Celia Dubey www.runvie.com

Swim Like A Swimmer I have seen the pattern within the last decade of triathletes doing the majority of their swim training in open water. They are under the impression the race is in open water so that’s where they should be training. But the truth is to become a better swimmer you must train like a swimmer. Olympic Open Water swimmers do the majority of their training in group situations in a pool setting, with a coach directing them to work on form and tempo. Swimming is the only of the three disciplines that relies almost completely on proper technique. In the water, the objective is to generate propulsion while reducing drag. There are multiple aspects in play at the same time so it is close to impossible to self-teach or self-coach proper technique. Having a professional coach watching over, analyzing and correcting your stroke is the key to faster times. Michael Phelps won more Olympic gold medals than anyone else, and he still relied on his swim coach. So where do you start? In the pool! If the majority of your swims are in open water, you are training where no one can see what you are doing, right or wrong, possibly reinforcing bad habits which directly affect speed and efficiency. Training in a pool with a coach that provides feedback and corrections is critical to achieve efficiency and strength. One on one coaching is of course the fastest way to improve swimming technique, but training with a local masters swim program with a certified coach can is an economical alternative. This group setting affords you the opportunity to swim and compete with other swimmers. Properly organized swim workouts include a warm-up, technique drills, speed/distance work and a cool down. You should find a local masters swim program that fits your schedule, with an active coach that makes corrections as well as provides the motivation to make the workouts fun. Should you ditch open water swimming all together? Absolutely not! There are skills that are only learned and perfected in open water. Drafting, sighting, swimming in crowds, swimming in rough water, dolphin diving, wetsuit swimming and others are only achieved properly in open water. But without basic swimming skills these open water techniques are harder and less effective. A great way to perfect these skills are clinics and specific training. (Be looking for the P6 Open Water Series again this summer) To dispel another myth – While the swim is the shortest portion of a triathlon it does need the attention the other disciplines need. A confident and well-trained swimming triathlete has many definite advantages. The most obvious is the overall aerobic fitness level. Swimming helps increase oxygen intake which transfers over to the bike and run. A proficient swimmer uses much less energy, which will carry over to the bike in a race. After proper training, anxiety levels will reduce, wasting less energy at the beginning of the race. And lastly, swimming can be fun! Masters swimming is a great opportunity to train with others whereby you can encourage each other on a regular basis to improve. So get out and Swim Like A Swimmer! Runner’s Knee: Try this Simple Fix First If you have ever suffered from pain in the front of your knee when you run, you’re not alone. As many as 65% of runners experience an injury every year. The most common running injury is Runner’s knee or patellofemoral pain syndrome - pain in the front of the knee or under the knee cap. The two most common causes of knee pain in runners are improper hip alignment and overstriding. Overstriding, happens when the foot lands too far in front of the body causing the leg to take on unnecessary stress that can injure the knee. The further the foot hits the ground in front of the body the greater the impact velocity when the foot hits the ground. High impact velocity at foot contact also reduces running economy. Shortening your stride can reduce sharp heel strikes and lessen stress on the knee. The most effective way to shorten your stride when running is to increase your step frequency or cadence. As little as a 5% increase in cadence has been shown to relieve knee pain from overstriding. To do this first determine the number of steps per minute you currently take when running. Counting the total number of footfalls, you take during a minute of running at a brisk easy pace. Use a treadmill if needed. Once you get the hang of counting its easy to determine the total number of footfalls you take a minute. Now increase that number by 5 to 10%. Work on a treadmill at the same pace (with a metronome if necessary) to increase your cadence to run at your new step rate. Increasing your cadence or step rate, even by 5-10% forces you to take shorter, lighter strides keeping your feet underneath your body. Running like this will force you to strike the ground with your midfoot, rather than your heel. You will spend more time in the air and less time “braking” on the ground. Combined these allow you to run with greater efficiency, dramatically reduce your risk of injury and help to eliminate pain in the front of your knee. Try this simple fix to beat runner’s knee and run pain free.

HOW SPECIAL IS YOUR RUNNING STORE? Gene Ulishney, BS HPE, CPED, BOCPED, ACSM member
There are two basic types of running stores, those that sell running shoes and others that provide a better running experience as well as solutions to your running issues. Unlike the internet, a basic running store offers a fitting process, helping you get the proper size as well as, generally, the proper stability level for your needs. Once your stability needs are determined they typically bring out two or three pairs of shoes from different companies and then have you determine which you prefer. If you ask what the difference is you will probably get a vague answer, something like, “It’s just that company’s way of doing it”. And, off you go to the register, without being offered the experience of the two most important accessories to enhance your performance and keep you running comfortably and pain-free - technical socks and foot supports. Not to mention the myriad of other products the store can provide, like the latest in apparel, sports bras (if appropriate), sports nutrition and more, all developed or designed to make your running experience better, more enjoyable and longer-lived. The Specialty Running Store, on the other hand, offers solutions. Its employees have gone through a rigorous training protocol, attended classes, studied online resources, learned from each other, and have paid attention to the shoes that seem to be working better than others. They have a genuine interest in YOU, your goals, and your concerns. Specialty Running Store employees have the knowledge to comfortably discuss your running-related pain, offer reasons why you have it, and then, solutions to help eliminate it. Running and walking pain does not just show up out of the blue or just because you run or walk. It is commonly caused by an imbalance in body mechanics, beginning at the feet, mostly due to our world of flat surfaces and the sometimes undesirable levers that shoes create while helping protect us from these surfaces. Contrary to what many in the running industry believe, all running shoes are not created equal. The absence of various shoe-generated levers is what makes one running shoe work better than another, virtually eliminating or greatly reducing pain and overuse injury. A top sales associate is also aware of additional pain and injury related variables such as the proper shoe fit specific to your feet, including shape, size, width, and flex-point; the proper stability level for your specific needs – including very important knee position; and abnormal sole-wear and its relationship to specific movements and areas of pain. This well informed sales associate will also stress how important proper socks (for fit, comfort and foot-health) and foot supports (for better body alignment and function) are to a successful fitting. It is said that each year between 60% and 80% of all runners have issues that cause them to stop running for a period of time. Most runners and walkers do not have to run or walk in pain. All things considered, a good evaluation and fitting can help eliminate upwards of 90% of running-related overuse pain and injury. The right products are already in most stores. They just have to be introduced and applied properly. A great fit is much more than a good guess. Remember always, when buying new running shoes, to bring in your old ones. They have a tale to tell. And, shoes alone are not the be all and end all. Technical socks and foot supports are the final additions to a more perfect fit and great running experience.

EARBUDS: LEAVE THEM AT HOME FOR YOUR SAFETY, BUT, IF YOU INSIST . . . .
Brian is a practicing attorney, specializing in personal injury cases with a subspecialty representing cyclists in bike/ auto accidents. He is a lifelong resident of St. Petersburg, and has been active, as both a participant and race manager for in excess of thirty years. He has worked on all phases of race production, including being one of the early race directors of St. Anthony’s Triathlon; announces many races on the West Coast of Florida, and served the Florida Region on the National Board of Directors for USATriathlon for six years, and is the Past President of that Organization. Brian is also on the Board/ Executive committee for the Frogman swim, proceeds of which benefit the Navy Seal Foundation providing multiple forms of assistance to families of Seals who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our Country. He is married to Awilda, and remains active in our sports community as both a participant and as an announcer of triathlons, running events, and the Seal Frogman Swim across Tampa Bay. He can be reached at bch@bchfirm. com, or 727-515-9397.

There are numerous articles flying around about earbud use by cyclists; I’m noticing more and more cyclists using them on the roads. Let me first state, I am categorically against the use of ANYTHING that might distract you in any way from the dangers presented by motorists and other cyclists. We need 100% of our faculties to avoid an injury, or worse. Wearing my attorney hat for a moment, any defense attorney will relish attacking you as a cycling victim of a car, based on your having earbuds. Even the safest earbuds won’t be understood by a jury. Let me first confirm that in Florida, it is ILLEGAL to wear earbuds in both ears. So at the very least, you should never have more than one in your ears, never two. When passing a cyclist with earbuds in both ears, give an extra wide berth to make the pass. Even yelling “on your left” is not likely to be heard; same goes with approaching a pedestrian wearing them. I’m aware of bone conduction headphones, and aware of the argument they may be much safer, because they rest on the bone outside and to the side of your ear, not within your ear. It is my opinion that until the Florida Legislature addresses this type, it will still be illegal to use them on both sides by both ears. We already know of friends, sometimes loved ones severely injured by motor vehicles: why would you not want every opportunity to hear what’s going on around you? And even when riding on a trail, you still make it less likely to hear another cyclist coming. Just common sense, folks. None of us wants to be a statistic. Tuning out your senses by tuning in music while on your bike is asking for trouble. If you insist on using some form of earbud, check out the blue tooth wireless bone conduction headphones on the market. At least this design doesn’t block sound from entering your ear; although, it will still dilute it to the point of adding yet another level of danger to your riding. Finally, when on a group ride, please, please remove them so you can hear others, and others can talk to you. It’s about safety first, not just yours, but everyone around you. Be safe out there.

How to get your course certified
The easiest way to have your course certified is to hire someone who is already skilled at measuring for USATF certification. Prices vary according to each measurer’s pay scale, but be prepared to spend $400 to $500 for a typical 5k.

Meilus Muscular Therapy is unlike any previous therapy available. We analyze patients using an engineering approach to determine the source of pain; non-invasive robotic therapy is then used to make corrections. The musculoskeletal system is a series of cables (muscles) working levers (bones). We look at how one part of the body affects another, and then show how the therapy will help you. We will even show you how to treat yourself at home! Waste build-up in the muscles causes adhesions, or knots to form. Stretching beyond the knot will tear and injure the muscle. The therapeutic robot disperses the knot, lengthening the muscle without injury. Therbo® is an intelligent therapeutic robot that knows how to treat your muscle using precise, gentle pressure and can: Make a change in your pain level in one visit without drugs, herbs, ultrasound, heat or magnets Treat the source, not the symptom – the area of treatment is frequently not the site of your pain Improve your gait speed Increase your stride length Increase your breathing capacity Help prevent side stitches Improve your running technique

Pinpoint Localized Cryotherapy Located at Physical Chiropratic of Tampa Bay
What is CryoFos? CRYOFOS – NRS THERAPY unlocks the body’s instinctive ability to overcome pain and heal itself naturally. NRS (Neuro Reflex Stimulation) uses hyperbaric medical CO2 gas to apply gentle pressure while delivering intense cold therapy. An abrupt and drastic change of the skin’s surface temperature is called Thermal Shock. That decreasing of skin temperature quickly triggers neuro-reflexive responses in the body that, when combined with the pressure from the gas, produces many beneficial physiological effects using the body’s own resources to combat pain and promote healing.
Immediate Pain Relief
Decreased Inflammation Promotes Faster Healing Safe & Effective
What to expect?
Safe and effective treatment will be delivered with smooth and constant motion across the treatment area. During treatment, sympathetic reaction (vasoconstriction) occurs after CryoFos has first been administered to the skin, and then creates a parasympathetic reaction (vasodilation) as it also increases circulation. Basically, better results than icing for 30 minutes.
