tone: Informed through both the context and visual aesthetic of the film. Imagery and typography needs to apply a sinister tone in order to appropraitely reflect the filmmakers process. This will be demonstrated and critiqued by an on-going evaluation and ivestigation.

news channel ident

Problem/Reason: Film includes a fake news report that needs a small ident creating in order to give the report authenticity. May also be used as a promotional tool, much like a trailer or ‘teaser’.

page(09)

Primarily looked at British news channels, in particular the BBC. Most tend to use a minimal layout as to not interfere with the imagery on screen. Needs to be present but non-intrusive. Most research conducted through the actual watching of news broadcasts. Stations such as sky news use a far more brash branding using gradients and 3-D rendering, however this may not be suitable for the report, especially if it distracts from the content.

page(10)

To keep the research appropriate to the context of the film we looked at titles from the horror/thriler genre. The one film we are most intrigued by was ‘Se7en’(1995). This typographic style of a slightly disturbed handwritten scribe seems apt for the context and tone of the films narrative.

childrens handwriting

page(13)

The structure of a childs handwriting is interesting when viewed in different lights. For example it can project an extremely disturbed image when associated with horror or sinister scenes. It makes sense to use this for one because it’s appropriate to the context, and two because it’s straying away from a possible route one response to a film titled ‘drip’ by playing on the narrative over the literal.

film identity(horror/thriller)

page(15)

Horror/thriller films tend to opt towards this distorted and dark aesthetical identity, obviously as a direct response to the content of the films. These works by Kellerhouse use layering techniques and light effects. Personally I think they work perfectly for the genre and capture a sense of something not being right. You wouldn’t look at these and expect to see finding nemo as the title. You already know that the film you are about to watch may be disturbing.
