CHRIS AND ROB DESINO Rob and Chris Desino have been successful in every aspect of their lives. As the principles of Ocala Horse Properties, the brothers from Rochester, New York, have earned their place as the leading real estate company selling horse farms throughout Ocala and Marion County. In addition, they also own Wellington Equestrian Realty and between the two companies, they represent the largest portfolio of premier horse properties in the world. “We have a passion for everything we do,” says Rob. “We enjoy getting to know people and sharing our enthusiasm for horses. We believe in pure customer service and pride ourselves on taking the time to listen to the needs, wants and desires of our buyers. Then we find them the perfect farm.” Their drive and determination showed early on as the twins were top performers in every sport they played. But it was competitive rowing where they first made a mark on the national scene. While attending Hobart College, they were two time National Collegiate Champions. After graduation, the brothers moved to Philadelphia where they trained and competed for the US National & World Championship Team. Prior to the 2000 Olympics, Rob suffered an unfortunate career ending injury and they turned their focus to another passion – restaurants. Rob and Chris created a chain of very successful restaurants throughout Rochester, Buffalo and Syracuse, New York, where they honed their exemplary customer service skills. “Restaurants are the best training for having an extreme focus on keeping guests happy,” says Rob. After selling their restaurants, they felt as if the horse farm real estate business was the next step and chose Ocala because they both had wintered here with their horses. They also had invested in Marion County horse farms and had first-hand knowledge of the value and charm of the area. “We were hooked the first time we were in Ocala,” says Chris. “I can’t imagine living anywhere else because Ocala is simply perfect.” Their enthusiasm and passion is evident in everything they do. Not only is Ocala Horse Properties the leader in farm sales, the twins take great pride in ensuring personal attention to every detail. “We enjoy what we do so much, it’s not work,” says Rob. “People notice that and we’ve had comments about how hands-on we are. “We are just very passionate about the farms in Ocala and love the real estate business. MATT VARNEY Matt Varney is an accomplished real estate professional who started his career specializing in large property acquisitions where he negotiated and closed contracts with some of the largest homebuilders in the country. In 2010, along with Chris and Rob Desino, Matt started Ocala Horse Properties’ sister company, Wellington Equestrian Realty. Even though Wellington is widely known as one of the most competitive places in the world to sell horse farms, Matt excelled quickly selling more farms than any other realtor in Palm Beach County three years running. Matt has worked with some of the largest land owners in the country including members of the Forbes Fortune 100 list and Wellington Equestrian Realty’s success has been well documented, in premiere publications such as the Wall Street Journal. Matt is an avid sports fan, a respectable golfer and enjoys riding recreationally, but he lives his equestrian competiveness vicariously though his wife, Dr. Courtney Varney, DVM. Matt enjoys accompanying Courtney, an accomplished FEI dressage rider and equine veterinarian, to as many competitions as his busy schedule will allow. Matt and Courtney are strong supporters of dressage in Florida, where along with Chris and Rob Desino, Matt was honored as a first founding sponsor of the Global Dressage Festival. Matt’s enthusiasm is contagious and his ability to quickly decipher and cultivate a clients’ needs, while persistently educating them about smart investments, is what sets him apart. His positive attitude and ability to thrive when challenges are thrown his way continue to give him the edge it takes to be successful.
MARY O’NEAL Mary O’Neal significantly adds to Ocala Horse Properties’ vast horse knowledge and is considered a valued team member. Once a veterinary assistant at the well-known Petersen and Smith Equine Hospital, Mary owned and showed quarter horses in both Western Pleasure and Huntseat, and has also owned, bred, and sold thoroughbreds throughout the years. She continues to dabble in thoroughbred sales and has years of experience with a large thoroughbred farm. A small farm specialist, Mary is a multimillion dollar producer who blends in with the Ocala Horse Properties client-focused philosophy. Since joining the Ocala Horse Properties team in 2010, Mary has been turning leads into successful sales one after the next. Marion County Sets Tourism Record Newly added events and a savvy marketing plan pay off.
O
ngoing brand awareness and marketing efforts have paid off big time for Marion County. According to the Ocala/Marion County Visitors and Convention Bureau, the county saw more than two million visitors between April 2014 and March 2015. “These latest numbers show a significant increase over previous years,” said Loretta Shaffer, executive director of the VCB. “But we’ve seen a positive trend over the last few years, a testament to the efforts of the Marion County Board of County Commissioners and the Ocala/Marion County Tourist Development Council.” This increase translates into $600 million spent by visitors and an overall economic impact of more than $900 million. The VCB ramped up their efforts in recent years with brand awareness and image campaigns and increased marketing efforts. And, recent reports from Visit Florida show that Florida welcomed more visitors in the first quarter of this year than any other in the states history. This is likely attributed to the addition of three new, high profile events coming to Ocala and Marion County this year. “We had the privilege to host some big national-international events in Marion County,” said Corry Locke, Sports Marketing Specialist at the Ocala/Marion County Visitors & Convention Bureau. “Three of these events were new to our destination during the research period and the other two grew significantly.”

The Babe Ruth 14U World Series was held in Marion County last August. It was one of the new events, which helped to break tourism records for the area. Na Yeon Choi won the inaugural LPGA Coates Golf Championship presented by R+L Carriers with a 16 under par score at Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club in Ocala, Florida. The FEI Nations Cup is one of the three newly added events that drew a lot of spectators and revenue to Marion County earlier this year.
The three new events included the LPGA Coates Golf Championship hosted by R+L Carriers in January at Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club, the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup, the show jumping competition qualifier for the Nations Cup finals, which was held in February at HITS Post Time Farm and the Babe Ruth 14U World Series hosted in August 2014. In addition, according to Smith Travel Research, the area’s hotel occupancy rate rose nearly 21 percent in the past three years with revenues rising more than 33 percent and a record $70.5 million. “On top of being the horse capital of the world, we are a Mecca of eco-tourism, of course we have Silver Springs which was the first attraction in the state and just a

The new legislation takes effects July 1 and overhauls equine medication and drug testing in the state including regulations that only allow the use of furosemide on race day. Until now, Florida was the only state to permit the use of an anti-inflammatory drug called prednisolone sodium succinate, or Solu-delta cortef. The law also doubles fines for violations to up to $10,000 and outlines 26 permitted therapeutic medications and testing practices.
“Indeed, Florida was known throughout the horse racing industry as ‘the obstructionist state’ in the efforts toward national uniformity,” Florida Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association executive director Kent Stirling said. “The fact is that any change required an act of the legislature. A turtle takes a breath at the surface, surrounded by a sea of Sagittaria and its gentle reflections. The quarter mile spring run from Blue Spring to the Santa Fe River is a great example of pristine vegetation and ecology as much of the grass is dotted with snails, which graze on algae.
You don’t have to dive deep to understand the threats facing Florida’s water. But, it can’t hurt either. This photo essay illustrates the impact humans have on the quality and quantity of Florida’s water. Take a dive into area springs to for a closer look at how population growth, changes in land use, temperature and precipitation patterns have severely impacted our state.
The green algae Vaucheria and the cyanophyte Lyngbya now dominate many springs, including Peacock Springs State Park in Live Oak, Florida. Scientists are currently investigating the causes of algal proliferation, which range from increased nitrates in the water to reduced flows from springs, reduced levels of dissolved oxygen, and changes in species assemblages. They’re finding that the reduced flow is caused by over pumping of water to the surface for population use as well as less rainfall. And, the increased nitrates come mostly from agriculture and farming and our neighbors’ lawns. The reduced oxygen is a result of algae die-off because, as algae decompose, the oxygen is busy consuming it.

This drastic change in ecology affects how the spring functions as well as the species that can live in the springs. Although much of the beautiful river still contains healthy native vegetation, water clarity has decreased along with river and spring flows due to algal growth and increased organic matter now present in the water. And, invasive plans such as water lettuce now dominate many areas.
About the photographer Jennifer Adler earned a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from Brown University in 2011 before moving to Gainesville, Florida to work as a biologist at U.S. Geological Survey. She immediately fell in love with the springs and underwater photography and set out on a quest to swim in every first magnitude spring. Jennifer started a blog called “Magnitude 1� to document her adventures. This blog has evolved with her knowledge of springs science and understanding of the complex issues surrounding their degradation and ultimately led her to go back to grad school. At the University of Florida, she is currently pursuing a PhD in Interdisciplinary Ecology, with a minor in journalism and science communication. Her dissertation blends science, journalism, and photography to raise awareness about Florida’s springs and water resources. She is a divemaster and cave diver, rarely found above water and seldom seen without a camera in hand. He and Affirmed are points of pride for area fans because, as the last two horses to win the Triple Crown, they were broken and trained here. American Pharoah, the 3-year-old colt who won the 147th Belmont Stakes in New York June 6, was broken in Citra by horseman J.B. McKathan. American Pharoah also has bloodlines that trace back to historically Florida-bred horses. My horse is exhibiting a severe non-weight bearing lameness, what should I do until you arrive? What are the possible outcomes? When assessing the acutely lame horse, it is important to gather as much information as possible. Check the lame limb for any obvious wounds, bleeding, swelling, or heat. It is important to bring the horse to a clean, dry, and possibly enclosed area for evaluation. Take your time in moving the horse, and try to only move the horse when absolutely necessary. Check the environment for any signs of distress or struggle, such as broken fence boards or broken feed tubs. When your veterinarian arrives, be sure to have as much information as possible to provide an accurate history for your horse’s condition. Has your horse had had any previous lameness, tendon, or ligament injury, or any history of tying up? When is the date of the last shoeing? What was the horse doing when you discovered the lameness? Any specific discipline your horse is currently competing? Providing an adequate history to your veterinarian will aid in making the correct diagnosis. There are many causes of lameness, and some of the most common causes of acute onset severe lameness include laminitis, sub-solar abscess, fracture, cellulitis, and septic joints. After a complete examination, your veterinarian will be able to tell you what the next step should be for your horse. In come cases stall rest and medications may be an appropriate start, or the decision may be to continue with further diagnostics such as x-ray, ultrasound, or joint tap. If the verdict is to continue with diagnostics, be sure to help keep the horse as calm as possible during the diagnostic procedure. It may be necessary to move and manipulate the lame limb in different positions to get different views, so make sure there are plenty of helping hands to steady the horse. The more help there is available, the quicker the procedure can be completed. We all hope for the cases of a sub-solar abscess, but unfortunately there are times when the cause of lameness is not clear at the initial examination. Sometimes it is necessary to implement a treatment plan and re-evaluate the lameness in a few days. Make sure you understand the plan you and your veterinarian create for your horse, and that you are comfortable administering any provided medications. OFP
