CHRIS AND ROB DESINO Rob and Chris Desino have been successful in every aspect of their lives. As the principles of Ocala Horse Properties, the brothers from Rochester, New York, have earned their place as the leading real estate company selling horse farms throughout Ocala and Marion County. In addition, they also own Wellington Equestrian Realty and between the two companies, they represent the largest portfolio of premier horse properties in the world. “We have a passion for everything we do,” says Rob. “We enjoy getting to know people and sharing our enthusiasm for horses. We believe in pure customer service and pride ourselves on taking the time to listen to the needs, wants and desires of our buyers. Then we find them the perfect farm.” Their drive and determination showed early on as the twins were top performers in every sport they played. But it was competitive rowing where they first made a mark on the national scene. While attending Hobart College, they were two time National Collegiate Champions. After graduation, the brothers moved to Philadelphia where they trained and competed for the US National & World Championship Team. Prior to the 2000 Olympics, Rob suffered an unfortunate career ending injury and they turned their focus to another passion – restaurants. Rob and Chris created a chain of very successful restaurants throughout Rochester, Buffalo and Syracuse, New York, where they honed their exemplary customer service skills. “Restaurants are the best training for having an extreme focus on keeping guests happy,” says Rob. After selling their restaurants, they felt as if the horse farm real estate business was the next step and chose Ocala because they both had wintered here with their horses. They also had invested in Marion County horse farms and had first-hand knowledge of the value and charm of the area. “We were hooked the first time we were in Ocala,” says Chris. “I can’t imagine living anywhere else because Ocala is simply perfect.” Their enthusiasm and passion is evident in everything they do. MATT VARNEY Matt Varney is an accomplished real estate professional who started his career specializing in large property acquisitions where he negotiated and closed contracts with some of the largest homebuilders in the country. In 2010, along with Chris and Rob Desino, Matt started Ocala Horse Properties’ sister company, Wellington Equestrian Realty. Even though Wellington is widely known as one of the most competitive places in the world to sell horse farms, Matt excelled quickly selling more farms than any other realtor in Palm Beach County three years running. Matt has worked with some of the largest land owners in the country including members of the Forbes Fortune 100 list and Wellington Equestrian Realty’s success has been well documented, in premiere publications such as the Wall Street Journal. Matt is an avid sports fan, a respectable golfer and enjoys riding recreationally, but he lives his equestrian competiveness vicariously though his wife, Dr. Courtney Varney, DVM. Matt enjoys accompanying Courtney, an accomplished FEI dressage rider and equine veterinarian, to as many competitions as his busy schedule will allow. Matt and Courtney are strong supporters of dressage in Florida, where along with Chris and Rob Desino, Matt was honored as a first founding sponsor of the Global Dressage Festival. MARY O’NEAL Mary O’Neal significantly adds to Ocala Horse Properties’ vast horse knowledge and is considered a valued team member. Once a veterinary assistant at the well-known Petersen and Smith Equine Hospital, Mary owned and showed quarter horses in both Western Pleasure and Huntseat, and has also owned, bred, and sold thoroughbreds throughout the years. She continues to dabble in thoroughbred sales and has years of experience with a large thoroughbred farm. Second annual outdoor sculpture competition brings the arts to Ocala’s central park
T
he first piece to be installed as part of the first annual Ocala Outdoor Sculpture Competition held last year was the fluid, 800-pound “Lofted” by Ocala artist and structural engineer, John Gamache. This year, during the second annual competition, visitors can view the 2013 “Best in Show” sculpture along with several others submitted by artists throughout the nation. Jerzy Kedziora’s “Acrobat on Ribbon” and “Uplifted,” a towering, long-legged horse crafted from the parts of two Ford Mustangs cars by Ocala artist James Oleson, join eight others in the 2014 Ocala Outdoor Sculpture Competition.

“Jerzy and many of the artists in this second-year exhibit are achieving international success,” said Melissa Townsend, the City of Ocala’s community cultural arts manager. “Jerzy Kedziora will be returning to the United States soon after installing a solo artist exhibition of his balancing sculptures in Abu Dhabi.” Townsend said the sculptures will be installed at Tuscawilla Park in Ocala beginning Oct. 8 and ending the morning of Oct. 17 with a VIP Sculpture Preview Reception that is open to the public later in the evening. The Ocala Outdoor Sculpture Competition is coordinated by the City of Ocala and is part of the broader Tuscawilla Park Cultural Arts Plan which aims to rejuvenate the park, making it Ocala/Marion County’s central park. Similar to the Horse Fever public art project launched by the Marion Cultural Alliance in 2001, which raised more than $1.2 million for charity, the competition aims to remind citizens that art is free and for the public. Pride in The Horse Capital of the World remains strong as evidenced in the submissions, Townsend said. “In both competition years, we have received exceptional equine sculpture submissions,” Townsend said. “The impact that the horse industry has on our community as a whole is apparent in the results of our jury selection process.”

The overall goal of the competition is to provide an outlet for self-discovery and art education, as well as an opportunity for the community to gather and celebrate creativity. “The continued development of cultural arts in Ocala and Marion County is what allows our intimate community to grow creatively. Through art education, exhibitions and performances we are able to broaden our community’s creativity as a whole,” said Chester Weber, United States Equestrian Federation member and two-time Silver Medalist and 10-time national Four-in-Hand Driving champion. The OCALA Outdoor Sculpture Competition began in May 2013 and resulted in “Lofted,” by Ocalan John Gamache, taking Best in Show. “Lofted” was purchased by Fine Arts for Ocala and donated to the city. Canadian artist Amel Chamandy donated “Marie and Jean” to the city as well, and both sculptures will remain permanent fixtures in the park, which is undergoing many upcoming improvements. The sculptures remain at Tuscawilla Park for one year before welcoming in the new submissions. Throughout the year, the public can admire each of the sculptures and take part in a scavenger hunt starting in mid-November. W
hen the Florida Agricultural Center and Horse Park became a reality, only a few people initially saw the massive potential of this gem located in the heart of horse country.
One of those who did, was Richard Traynor of Equiventures, the official organizer of all of the United States Equestrian Association competitions at the Horse Park. “We are continuing and constantly looking for events to bring to Ocala and the Florida Horse Park,” says Traynor, CEO of Equiventures. To that end, Equiventures recently announced it has secured two top equine professionals to join the team. Clayton Fredericks came on as the cross country course designer and JJ Johnson as co-organizer. Clayton is an Olympic medalist, two-time World Cup Champion, and the only eventer to complete all six CCI4**** 3-Day Events held around the world. He is currently in the process of designing the November cross country course and is excited to test a new track that travels through the forest on the outlying part of the cross country fields. JJ Johnson has worked at the Rolex Kentucky CCI4**** 3-Day Event for 23 years and has participated in three Olympic games. She has had a vital role in planning this year’s events and Equiventures is excited to continue working with her on this event and future events. Ocala Horse Properties is the title sponsor for the Winter Series, which kicks off Nov. 15 at the Florida Horse Park. The park is now planning to install RV parking and hook-ups and permanent stalls to be used for all events. “There has been a great synergy around the park and all it can offer,” says Richard. “Equiventures has the strength and ability to lead the way in bringing the best talent to the area. uper star students were recently awarded tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships to pursue their greatest equine dreams.
This September, Florida Thoroughbred Charities, Inc., the foundation of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association, has once again recognized academic achievement and by providing 28 exceptional students from across the state with $29,500 in scholarships. The students were evaluated on their active involvement in extracurricular clubs and organizations, academic or other honors received and their grades. The students were also asked to provide a narrative about their future plans after graduation from college and their career and educational goals. And, of course, it doesn’t hurt to be an equine enthusiast. The students received $500 for the 2014-2015 school year for the fall 2014 semester and $500 for the spring 2015 semester for use toward textbooks and tuition. Three top students selected received $750 in scholarships for each semester as a result of their high achievements in academics. The top recipients are: Amelia Alvarado, Breely Barthle, Liam Benson, Shelby Brooks, Lauren Brown, Caly Bryan, Courtney Clark, Nathan Cole, Mauri Gay, Katelyn Ludington, Ashlend Moss, Evaluz Obeso, Cheyanna Patrick, Jade Robinson, Sanjuana Rodriguez, Meghan Schwietert, Kate Shuffitt, Jessica Smith, Andrea Taylor and Kayla Waldorff. While many scholarship recipients attend universities across the United States, five of the awardees are students at the University of Florida, four attend the College of Central Florida in Ocala, and three students each attend the University of Central Florida and University of South Florida. The funds are raised through a wide variety of charity events and through the generosity of individual donors. Throughout the year FTBOA hosts the Horse of the Year Gala, the annual Stallion Season Auction and a fall golf tournament. The Florida Thoroughbred Charities, Inc. scholarship program also receives support from the Quail Roost Foundation Scholarship and an endowment through the College of Central Florida. OFP

My horse has heaves and is still breathing heavily in the cool weather, why is her condition worsening this time of year? Heaves, which is also known as Recurrent Airway Obstruction is a respiratory disease triggered by an allergic response to allergens in the environment. Experts believe dust and mold to be specific allergens responsible for the onset of this disease. Horses with RAO will often have a cough, flared nostrils, mild nasal discharge, and a strong abdominal component while breathing – especially when exhaling. As heaves is activated by the presence of allergens in the environment, cooling temperatures will not improve the condition. It is best to alter the environment to discover which allergens are affecting the horse’s condition. Stables are high in dust and mold and therefore can further aggravate your horse’s condition. If the horse spends most of the time in a stall, try increasing turnout or leave her on permanent turnout. Conversely, some horses in the southeast United States are prone to an allergic response to allergens in late summer pastures. This is sometimes called summer pasture-associated obstructive disease and these horses may improve when brought into a stable away from the grass. It may also help to soak feed/hay in water, or switch to a pelleted feed or hay cubes to decrease the dust during feed time. No matter what the inciting incident is responsible for the onset of heaves in your horse, a proper treatment plan should be implemented. Environmental changes are the first step, but improvement may take weeks. Medical therapy including oral/ aerosolized bronchodilators, and corticosteroids may be used by your veterinarian to expedite the reduction of inflammation in the lungs. If proper therapy is initiated quickly, the disease can go into periods of remission allowing the horse to go untreated when environmental conditions improve. OFP

It is also used by the Duplicate Bridge Club and is available for public rental – a significant goal of the revamping of the park. “Tuscawilla Park is on the fast track to becoming a destination for Ocala residents and guests,” said Melissa Townsend, the City of Ocala’s community cultural arts manager. But perhaps one of the most impressive visions is that of the Ocala Civic Auditorium, which was originally built in 1933 at a price tag of $62,000. Now, because of an inspiring partnership with the Ocala City Council and the Ocala Symphony Orchestra, the new auditorium, which will be called the Reilly Arts Center, will serve as a home to the orchestra and a number of larger community cultural programs. “Not only will [the auditorium] be the permanent home of the Ocala Symphony Orchestra, but a haven for the arts in our community,” said OSO Executive Director Pamela Calero. “We feel the Reilly Arts Center will be an integral part of connecting the downtown square with Tuscawilla Park and complement the burgeoning landscape.” Also impressive is the plan for the Old Recreation Center – the city’s first recreation center also known as the Art Center and Model Railroader Building. Once it was the hub of athletic

This particular project relies heavily on private gifts as well as in-kind donations. On the fast track to become a true central park, the acreage currently includes walking trails, a large playground, lighted sports amenities including tennis courts, baseball field and basketball court, and a sculpture exhibit; all designed with the priority of preserving the area’s natural resources. Stormwater retention is in place to contribute to higher water quality of the lakes at Tuscawilla and to serve as a retention area for much of downtown Ocala.The mature tree canopy provides a landscape that was nonexistent 50 years ago and will be preserved for generations to come; while aquatic vegetation and landscaping will help provide a sustainable freshwater ecosystem. The city has been careful to preserve the natural habitats for native and migratory animal species. In addition to beautification and restoration of physical spaces in the park, the city has ensured that all amenities meet the Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines for accessibility and has outlined a number of infrastructural improvements allowing for pocket parking lots, added lighting and intersection and waters edge enhancements. Ranging in completion from six months to up to 10 years to achieve all goals, most of these projects are underway and can be appreciated now. “Among the century-old live oaks, visitors will find state-of-the-art recreation facilities, world-class public art and live entertainment events featuring national acts such as the Nov. 8 Feel Downtown LIVE Harvestfest music festival featuring Thompson Square,” Townsend said. “Tuscawilla has it all!” OFP
