On New Year’s morning this year, my family was on the Big Island of Hawaii where we went for a hike down the ocean bluff at the Polulu Valley on the North Kohala Coast. The earth pounding crash of waves on this rocky beach was almost from another world. Big volcanic boulders of various size, shape and color forced visitors to stack rocks and create monuments. It was an invigorating exercise, both physically and creatively to kick off a new year.

he historic, immaculately restored Hotel De Anza in downtown San Jose combines high style with one of Silicon Valley’s best locations. The Deco-era national landmark is the closest hotel to the HP Pavilion arena, minutes from the Mineta San Jose International Airport and walking distance to downtown San Jose’s convention center, restaurants, nightclubs and performing arts theaters. For guests who prefer to remain inside, the highly regarded La Pastaia Restaurant offers contemporary, rustic Italian cuisine and a deep wine list of brunellos, amarones, nebbiolos and classic chiantis. The De Anza also lets its guests “raid the pantry” for midnight snacks. continue >

DESIGN INSPIRATION…
ANIEL GARCIA SHOWCASING SAN JOSE
Bay Area native Daniel Garcia is the creator of Content Magazine, an independent publication that turns a spotlight on San Jose’s creative an innovative people.
WHEN DID YOUR INTEREST IN PHOTOGRAPHY START? I began my career on my high-school yearbook. I had never picked up camera before but just had a knack for it. I liked it so much I went to the Academy of Art in San Francisco. With ten images I did in the fashion class, I landed several gigs with local modeling agencies. After a few semesters, I left school to shoot full time.

INTERVIEW BY: JEFFREY CURRENT 2012 AIA PRESIDENT AIA SANTA CLARA VALLEY CHAPTER STUDIO CURRENT
WHY SAN JOSE? WOULD YOU EVER WANT TO LIVE SOMEPLACE ELSE?
WHERE DID YOU GET THE INSPIRATION FOR CONTENT MAGAZINE?
San Jose is where I grew up; it’s my home. I

do something for our city to help serve the businesses, artists and talented people that live here by having a style and quality on par with recognized national magazines, but for and by San Joseans.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE FOR THE FUTURE OF CONTENT MAGAZINE? We want to help businesses reach more customers, help artists get their work displayed, and help the city of San Jose to be a place to live and to visit that celebrates the creativity and innovation that is here. We succeed when others are rewarded for their work. We are striving to have high-quality writing, meaningful interviews and a layout and design that inspires and grows the artistic community in San Jose.
WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO SPEND YOUR TIME? I would really like to spend my time playing soccer with my son, but I love shooting and cultivating Content and meeting all the great people in our community. I love people and helping them, so Content is an expression of what it means for me to bless the people around me. And helping others really is the key to life isn’t it?
HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR WORK LIFE? It’s the most difficult thing for me to stop and enjoy what I have. I am so blessed and love my family and the work I get to do, but it’s easy to be driven by deadlines, or what I think I need to do or should do. So I juggle. I try to play and enjoy and do it all. I know that family or work is not about the quantity but the quality so I try to keep that in my mix.
saying, “I am going to die in this house; this is the last time I move.” So, I have no desire to expand Content to other cities. Let the other cities come to us – they have in the tech world. Now my mission and Content’s mission is to have that same effect on the world but from here.
WHAT DOES MADE IN SAN JOSE MEAN TO YOU? THE PUBLICATION? Peers. Friends. A little healthy competition. Too small, too glossy and too many ads (he laughs). The idea of being made in San Jose? Well, Content is really committed to San Jose and made here.
