horter days, a chill in the air and the anticipation of another holiday season in mid-Missouri. I always enjoy the month of November, and this one sure came upon us fast. You can’t help but reflect back on 2014, and be thankful for what was. For all of us here at Joe Machens Dealerships, we are especially grateful for all of the new friends we have made, along with the countless times we joined together to help the community. A teal green 4-door, with all the luxury of crank windows. LOL. What do you like to do for fun? I love to take my Kawasaki ZX10R motorcycle to the race track. I also just go cruise around the back roads and go to car shows.

You’d never guess that I … After one season of going to the race track, I began racing professionally at the beginning of the next year. Why am I proud to be affiliated with the Machens Dealerships: Working for such a great organization made me become a better person. It has given me the opportunity to grow and to help lots of people get into their dream cars. Machens is like a big family to me. W
hat struck me first about driving the Jeep Cherokee, Sport model, was its great looking interior. The model I drove had black, leather-line interior bucket seats that were extremely comfortable and seemed easy to clean and maintain. Touch controls were easy to use and with a little logic, I quickly figured out how to accomplish everything I needed including radio, air adjustment, blue tooth connection and more. I loved the zippy ride in the city and found highway driving so smooth that acceleration was oh too easy. The ride was as even and effortless at 30 miles per hour as it was at 70 miles per hour (…or more, whoops!). What a great sound system too! I thoroughly enjoyed cranking up jazz tunes on my commute between Jefferson City and Columbia. Loved the idea of a remote start system that would come in plenty handy on cold Missouri mornings. Additionally, the automatic front-wheel drive feature is a huge bonus during snowy winters. The Cherokee is responsive, sporty and fun to drive. It offers lots of room for carting kids, sporting equipment, groceries, luggage and the family pet. Drop-down second seats give added trunk space when carrying even larger loads. I would buy the 2015 Jeep Cherokee and highly recommend you take it for a spin.

Feast Your Eyes on the Road Safe Travel Tips for the Ho-Ho-Holidays
T
urkeys can’t fly and without a sleigh and nine reindeer, your holiday travel plans will most likely lead you, and thousands of other people, to the open road. Before you travel over the river and through the woods, consider these tips to help prepare you, your car and your family to arrive at Grandma’s house full of holiday cheer.
Avoid peak travel days
With nearly 91 percent of long-distance holiday travel being by vehicle, you can count on the roads to be crowded this holiday season. Avoid the traffic jams by not driving on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, the Sunday after Thanksgiving or the day before Christmas. These days are filled with holiday drivers and carry increased accident rates. Consider departing on Thanksgiving or Christmas Day after the initial rush if you can make it to your destination for the heart of the family celebrations.
Get a pre-winter vehicle inspection A major part of holiday travel preparation for your vehicle is a pre-winter vehicle inspection, with emphasis on pre-winter. Before the weather becomes frightful, have a qualified technician inspect your vehicle and test all vitals: brakes, battery, fluid levels, tire
pressure, light bulbs and any parts that need regular maintenance. Having your vehicle looked at is a good way to ensure peace of mind before snow and ice turn the roads into a winter wonderland. Post-inspection and pre-departure, it’s not a bad idea to take a look in, around and under your vehicle. Check for the following: • Adequate fluid levels • The strength of your battery to generate adequate power and operate in sub zero temperatures • Old, dry and worn out windshield wipers. Test visibility quality by ensuring the blades sweep the entire windshield clear with each swipe. • Check tire inflation and tread depth. To check tread depth, place a quarter upside down in the tire groove. If the top of Washington’s head is exposed at any point, it’s time for new tires. • Make sure that brake lights, turn signals, headlights, and rear lights are working properly. Also check the inside dashboard lights, the dome light, and the glove box light.
Slow it down
Most cars get optimal gas mileage when driving between 60 and 65 miles per hour on the highway. Driving at a speed of 60 miles per hour
or less helps burn less fuel and allows for a longer braking distance to avoid high speed accidents.
Don’t wait to fill up
Once your gas tank drops below half-full, it becomes easier for the remaining gas to evaporate. Additional volume can help reduce moisture problems within your fuel system and add helpful weight to your vehicle. As you travel for the holidays, fill up when you’re down to a half tank. You will be able to take more breaks and rest to keep you energized during your trip. Do this and you will save some money at the pump, too!
Have an emergency road kit
Preparation of your vehicle also means preparation for yourself. Consider these items part of your vehicle’s essentials for safe winter driving - a cell phone (don’t forget the car charger); ice scraper; shovel; tow rope and jumper cables; sand or cat litter to aid with traction; water and snacks; blankets; flashlights, matches and emergency candles; first aid kit; portable radio; and a good book, in case you do get stuck. As you embark, keep in mind these few safety precautions that you and your family can do to maximize holiday travel happiness and minimize coal-in-the-stocking grief or burnt turkey shame. yundai Motor America is rewarding owners for shopping online and servicing their vehicles at participating dealerships with Hyundai Rewards, an innovative and comprehensive engagement program. The free Hyundai Rewards program offers members points for every dollar spent shopping online through the Hyundai Rewards site or every time they visit a participating dealer’s service department. Points can be applied towards the purchase or lease of a new Hyundai vehicle or future service visit. “This program creates a stronger bond between Hyundai Motor America, its dealers and owners. We believe with this platform we are entering the next phase of loyalty with the ultimate goal of rewarding our owners for their support,” said Michael Deitz, senior group manager of Connected Care, Hyundai Motor America. “We started an interactive rewards program to make the car ownership experience as easy as possible, lower the cost of ownership and help with that next Hyundai vehicle purchase.” On the Hyundai Rewards website owners can see their current points. Members can use the online calculator to see the dollar value of their points when they create their voucher. They can then bring the voucher into a participating dealer for a discount. Vouchers can be printed, emailed or shown to the dealer on the members’ smartphone screen to receive the discount. This array of tests replicates everything from dawn to dusk, changes in natural light due to weather conditions and even damaging UV sunrays. “Built Ford Tough means more than surviving dirt, rocks and mud, or towing heavy trailers,” said Cindy McComb, materials engineer in the Central Lab. “We like to think our work on this truck has given it the kind of sun protection Built Ford Tough trucks require to look as good after five years of exposure to sun, wind and rain as they do when they leave the showroom floor.” Direct sunlight does more than fade vehicle parts over time – it can also make it hard to see information displayed on gauges and screens used for navigation and entertainment systems. Ford engineers used advanced computer-aided design software to identify the least reflective materials to use, and incorporated shaded gauges on the instrument panel of the all-new truck designed to minimize glare. “By reducing indirect glare, the driver should practically never see a sun spot in the center screen or instrument cluster,” said Cary Diehl, Ford human factors engineer. “In addition to testing gauges and screens under these conditions, we looked at the amount of light given off by LEDs in window and steering wheel control switches to ensure they would not be distracting to the driver when lit.” “Our work in the lighting lab ensures that despite almost any weather outside, customers will find it easy to read controls inside the truck today and years down the road,” said Mahendra Dassanayake, Ford lighting technical specialist.
