elcome to October and another wonderful fall season here in midMissouri. With all that it brings, it really is one of my favorite times of the year. The weather is nice, the World Series is on its way, college and professional football are everywhere, and ready or not, the holidays are just around the corner. You have got to love breaking out the sweatshirts and getting ready for the final quarter of 2015. As usual, Joe Machens Dealerships has had a busy time with community activities recently, and we could not do it without you. We were pleased to again help sponsor the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, downtown at Peace Park. Thanks to all of you who joined Team Machens, and to everyone who supported the fight against breast cancer. I would also like to thank all of you who took part in recent Joe Machens Ford Lincoln Drive 4 UR School event. Due to all of your test-drives, Ford Motor Company donated nearly $6,000 to Columbia high schools. It was a terrific day, and we truly appreciate your support of our local students. Looking ahead, you will want to make plans to attend the University of Missouri’s 104th homecoming festivities on October 10th. It is always a lot of fun for the entire family. What brought you to Columbia? Started working in Columbia in 1977 after graduating Linn Technical College with a degree in Automotive Technology as a technician. Moved up the ranks as a Dispatcher, Service Writer, Shop Foreman, Assistant Service Manager. Received Service Management Degree in 1998 from University of Automotive Management.

You’d never guess that I … was a hardcore co-recreational softball player. I played 4 nights a week and tournaments on weekends.

What brought you to Columbia? I have lived in Boone County all of my life. I graduated from Hallsville High School and now live in Centralia.

What do you like to do for fun? I really enjoy going to my grandkids’ football, basketball, softball and volleyball games, along with wrestling matches and dance events. I also like to mow the yard.

Test drive: The All-New 2016 Mazda CX-3

The All-New 2016 Mazda CX-3

ne of my favorite things about working with the magazine is trying new things. Usually, that means we get to see, taste and know new things first — but this time, I got to drive something new! The first ever 2016 Mazda CX-3 was a delight to drive, and I’m so happy I got the chance to review it this month. When I arrived at the car lot, this beauty was waiting for me. A vivid red color called “Soul Red” that screamed “Come play with me!” It was a gorgeous fall-like day and I had places to be. I was excited to get to zip around town in this new car. It only had three miles on it when I first stepped in. As I opened the door, I was immediately impressed by the bold three-tone interior of black and white with red accents. While driving, the heads up display kept me alert and I found myself not having to look around for things. It was very easy to find and change the settings when I realized my speed was being tracked in kilometers instead of miles. It is very clear that this is a cabin that is designed to let you focus on what matters most – driving. Providence Road, normally congested, became a breeze to navigate with the blind spot warning

light on the side mirrors. A car-shaped light automatically lights up when a vehicle is cruising in your blind spot next to you. As it was a beautiful day and I was in a brand new blazing red car, it just felt right having the tunes turned up. Finding my favorite stations was a breeze as I switched between using the hand controls on the steering wheel and the dial on the center console. The CX-3’s cabin features, displays and controls are very easy to see, reach and use. It’s obvious that this car was designed to make you feel comfortable and confident behind the wheel. When I first saw the car, I was worried about seating three adults comfortably while running our errands. Although it’s a small car, the back seat afforded plenty of room for everyone. It was a very comfortable ride for all of us. Between the amazing fuel efficiency and the high level of easy visibility from the car, this car is a winner in my book. After quadrupling the mileage on this car in the matter just of two hours, I found many reasons why anyone would love to have this car as their own.

Car Care with Kids

ew drivers love their cars, but they typically don’t realize what it takes to maintain them. The Car Care Council recommends having fun teaching children about the importance of car care long before they can drive so they know how routine maintenance impacts the safety and dependability of their vehicle. “Many children love learning how cars operate, however, they don’t really understand the nuts and bolts of what it takes to properly maintain a car,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “By taking the time to teach your children the basics of car care, they will not only learn to appreciate the value of taking care of a car, but they will be more informed and better prepared for the day they become a car owner.”

There are many do-it-yourself service procedures that can be performed by parents and children together. The Car Care Council suggests starting with three easy and fun maintenance steps to give children a general overview of car maintenance. Check Lights and Wiper Blades – Explain to children the importance of being able to see and be seen when driving. Show them how to replace the wiper blades and work together to make sure all interior and exterior lights work properly. Wash the Car – Kids love to help wash the car. Ask them to look for any dents, dings, scratches or cracked glass, as these problems, when left unattended, can lead to more expensive repairs down the line. Check the Oil – Show children how to check the oil and explain how periodic oil and filter

changes help keep your car clean on the inside of the engine. Also explain that other vehicle fluids, such as windshield solvent, should be checked and refilled to keep the car running properly.

To help understand and explain the importance of auto care, the Car Care Council developed its popular Car Care Guide. BMW Group overall winner at the Engine of the Year Awards 2015

F

our wins in the latest International Engine of the Year Awards plainly demonstrate the BMW Group’s engine-building prowess. The drive unit in the BMW i8 earned two class wins as well as being declared overall winner, with a further class win being garnered by the engine of the BMW M3 and BMW M4. The BMW i8 unit was voted class winner for its BMW TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder petrol engine, while the overall drive unit of the BMW i8 claimed a further class win as the best “new engine”. Its combination of electric motor and petrol engine also earned it overall victory. In the 2.5 to 3.0-litre displacement category, the M TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder in-line petrol engine of the BMW M3 and BMW M4 came out on top. This fourfold success for the BMW Group at the International Engine of the Year Awards 2015 furnishes further evidence of the performance potential of the Efficient Dynamics technology package, which since 2007 has enabled a continuous enhancement of driving pleasure while at the same time cutting fuel consumption and emissions. The International Engine of the Year Awards were launched in 1999, since when 66 class and overall wins have gone to engines developed for

BMW models. Each year an expert panel of judges, this time comprising 65 motoring journalists from 31 countries, selects the best engines in numerous categories. The prize-winners were presented with their awards on Wednesday, 17 June 2015, against the backdrop of the Engine Expo trade fair in Stuttgart.

Customers are surveyed after 90 days of ownership at the same time as J.D. Power’s Initial Quality Study (IQS). According to J.D. Power, the most appealing vehicles have greater owner loyalty, command higher transaction prices and spend less time on dealer lots before purchase.

Challenger achieved the highest IQS ranking among Midsize Sporty Cars for four out of the past five years as well as being named a segment leader in 2015 and 2014 J.D. Power U.S. Initial Quality (IQS) StudySM. For 2015, Dodge Charger is significantly updated, featuring a standard across the lineup new state-of-the-art eight-speed automatic transmission and several new models, including the all-new Charger SRT Hellcat, SRT 392 and R/T Scat Pack models, all of which highlight the added performance to the new 2015 Dodge Charger lineup. The Fiat 500 vehicle lineup was updated for the 2015 model year with the addition of an advanced instrument panel with a 7-inch highdefinition TFT (Thin Film Transistor) cluster display, a redesigned center console and Bluetooth streaming audio capability. In addition to the interior enhancements across the Fiat 500 lineup, Fiat 500 Abarth, Abarth Cabrio and Turbo added a six-speed automatic transmission as an option for 2015.

Lincoln Continental Concept 30way Seats Preview new era of Wellness and Luxury

F

eeling refreshed and rejuvenated – even after a long trip – is possible with the 30-way seats introduced in the Lincoln Continental Concept. “The next frontier to serve the luxury automotive client is a seat that conforms to and supports the body – a seat that feels as if it were personally tailored for you each time,” said Johnathan Line, advanced seat innovation supervisor and technical expert.

In addition to greater adjustability than previously offered to better tailor and personalize their experience, improved comfort comes from a patented flexible comfort carrier. This suspension system of plastic and a thin layer of foam flexes around the body, helping take stress off the shoulders and neck. Lincoln seats engineers studied first-class and private airplane seats for possible applications. Lisa Senters-McDermott, CEO of Jet Senters Aviation, believes luxury drivers will welcome the influence of high-end aviation seating. Support for the lower body and legs is provided by two extending thigh cushions, each independently adjustable. The cushions can be extended or moved up or down. This allows the driver to further personalize the adjustments and give support as needed to each leg independently, recognizing the different needs for each leg - one is at rest while the other engages the pedals. Additional comfort is provided by massage functions in the back and cushion. The rolling-pattern massage is designed to help reduce muscle fatigue, aches and pains by keeping muscles and blood vessels stimulated in the legs and lower back. The seats can be heated, and cooling vents are included as well. “Creating a seat that tailors itself to your body and can be adjusted to the situation to make you more comfortable can be a big benefit,” said Christopher Kempski, an ergonomist for Ergo Concepts, LLC. “In my field, we develop solutions for industries that create the best possible fit between workers and their tasks – in essence reducing fatigue. When the body tires, the mind follows, so keeping the body refreshed is vital.”

F-150 Performance Enhanced by New Sport Mode

C

razy-smart Ford engineers have struck again – this time blending the sport mode feature borrowed from the all-new Mustang with the reduced weight of the all-new F-150 to deliver an engaged, dynamic driving experience with any of the four high-output, fuelefficient powertrains available to truck customers. Since the all-new 2015 Mustang and F-150 were developed on a similar time line and share certain automatic transmission technology, powertrain engineers often drove both vehicles on the same trips used for testing. “Our team realized how well the new F-150 handled and responded to acceleration due to its reduced weight,” said Karl Jungbluth, Ford transmission calibration engineer. “So we decided we could adapt the sport mode capabilities of the six-speed automatic transmission from Mustang to F-150 to enhance the overall driving experience for truck customers.” Sport mode on F-150 is activated by pushing the tow/haul mode button twice. An amber S appears in the lower-right portion of the tachometer indicating sport mode is active. The feature works by changing the frequency of gearshifts, so the truck stays in the “sweet” spot of the powerband and holds lower gears longer to make driving more fun. That means less shifting on engaging drives, such as twisty roads with rolling hills. Instead of shifting gears up and down for peak efficiency, the transmission holds a specific gear longer to make driving more responsive and spirited.

Sport mode reduces the frequency of having to step on the gas pedal to reach peak torque – resulting in quicker acceleration with less pedal travel. The truck feels more responsive to the driver’s pedal inputs. When combined with the transmission changes, the result is an ondemand performance feel similar to what an aftermarket modification might add to the truck, but with the benefit of maintaining the Ford vehicle warranty. An advanced feature of F-150’s six-speed automatic transmission is its ability to match engine rpm as it downshifts in slowing for a corner. Electronics calibration for this feature comes straight out of Mustang.
