Q&A Safety

Ask The Mech

Q - My phone has a loudspeaker, when I get a call I just answer it, put into onto loudspeaker and then I can talk whilst it is in my top pocket. Am I committing a offence?

Q. I need new tires for wife’s ‘84 BMW 733i rear wheel drive. We can only afford two this month, so thw question is, front or rear for better handling?

A. YES. It is an offence if the phone is or must be held at some point during the course of making or receiving a call. The only way you can answer a call is with a hands free kit that allows you to answer by simply pressing a button without holding the phone. But beware - if you are distracted whilst on a call you could still be committing an offence of driving without due care or failing to have proper control of the vehicle.

This MONTH 2012 is here. New year, new ideas. We decided to try something new this year. 1. We decided to save on paper and save the environment. 2. Give more content and quality pix 3. Play around with the layout 4. Have more test drives for example Toyota decided to give out their new models for a test drive to Naivasha and back. We will give you a preview of what happened. Make sure you get to read this. Well enough about that, lets see what we have in store this month. We talked to the former Chairman of KARA (Kenya Auto Repairers Association) which has now been changed to KEMRA (Kenya Motor Repairers Association)and learnt what new changes they have in store. We headed to CMC Suzuki, and they gave us the keys to their new Suzuki Grand Vitara. Not a bad ride so to speak, loved it. Kmsf had their awards, nominated a few guys and the lucky one’s went home with a trophy. Have a look and see whats new. Enjoy!

Mercedes Benz Sells Over 2 Million SUVs If you like Mercedes Benz SUVs and big, rounded numbers, we have good news for you. The German automaker has announced that they delivered over 2 million SUVs in 2011, mainly due to strong demand from China and the Europe markets. Demand for the jacked-up vehicles was 24.3 percent higher last year than it was in 2010. They have been going at it with the G-Class for a while now, but Mercedes SUVs only became palatable with the arrival of the ML-Class. However, the R-Class that saw the biggest increase in demand - 50.3 percent. “With the launch of our first sport utility vehicle – the GClass – more than 30 years ago, we entered a segment in which we are now very successful with a total of five models. The SUVs today are an important pillar of Mercedes-Benz’s growth and have regularly posted a new sales record in every month since July 2010,” Joachim Schmidt, Mercedes’ head of sales and marketing, said.

2012 Nissan Cube Gets New Limited Edition The 2012 model year only brings a few minor changes for the Nissan Cube, but the vehicle does receive a new limited edition that wants to please the customers who want something special. This uses the S Indigo designation and brings goodies such as 15-inch alloy rims, a satnav that uses a 5-inch screen, a rear view camera, a Rockford Fosgate audio system, keyless start and others. As for the standard Cube, this has received a total of five new colors: Pearl White, Brilliant Silver, Gun Metallic, Cayenne Red and Bali Blue. The S and SL trim levels now come with a front passenger seat armrest, while the latter also includes the Nissan Intelligent Key. When the facelifted version Volkswagen Passat entered our market, we found a reliable partner that can cater to your transportation needs. However, the vehicle is approaching the end of its life cycle, with the next generation set to arrive in 2014. The new Passat will use the VW Group’s new MQB platform, which will also underpin the next Golf and Audi A3. The move will allow the Passat to be more efficient, as it will save at least 50 kg. The increased efficiency will also come from the power department, where VW is expected to introduce a hybrid version that should deliver an overall output of 170 hp and offer an all-electric range of 31 miles (50 km). In addition to that, the diesel engines will receive NOx catalysts that will allow them to meet Euro6 emission standards. January - February 2012

2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid Unveiled Volkswagen might have been a little late to the hybrid game, but it’s managed to put a completely different spin on the idea with the new Jetta Hybrid that has been officially revealed at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show. The innovative hybrid drivetrain combines a turbocharged 1.4-liter TSI with 150 horsepower and a 20 kw electric motor. The combined output is 170 hp and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque. The power is sent to the front wheels via a 7-speed DSG gearbox. This platform allows for consumption figures that are 20 percent lower than what the equivalent petrol powered models. What’s more, the car isn’t exactly slow, posting a 0 to 100 kph time of less than 9 seconds. Also, in electric-only mode, the Jetta Hybrid can reach 77 Km/h and can travel for approximately 1.3 miles or 21 kilometers.

Audi RS4 Avant Coming This Year Enthusiast have been waiting for a new Audi RS4 from the first day the current A4 was launched, but there have been many unofficial sources that claimed Audi would not build such a car. However, it seems that we might get an A4 Power War fighter after all. According to an Audi insider confirmed that the automotive producer will give us an RS4 in the third quarter of the current year. However, the source insisted that one should not “assume” that this will come in a sedan form, which means that we’ll get an RS4 Avant. The hot station wagon should be powered by a naturally-aspirated 4.2-liter V8 engine delivering 450 hp and a peak torque of 430 Nm (317 lb-ft). We’ll be back with more info as soon as we get our hands on it. 10

Car and General Posts 27% Growth Car and General (Kenya) Limited has announced financial results for the year ending September 2011. Turnover closed at 6 billion shillings, growing 27 per cent over the previous year. The rapid and steep devaluation of the Kenya shilling against all major currencies had a significant impact on margins which reduced profitability. The company generated profit before tax of 428 million shillings. “The biggest challenges was throughout the year were adverse foreign exchange movements across the region”, said Mr Vijay

Gidoomal, the Car and General Group Managing Director. “Although profitability was below the expectation largely due to unsatisfactory returns from our distribution business, our investment property business and poultry business performed reasonably”. Talking about some of the highlights of the year, Vijay Gidoomal said, “Car & General was recognised by the President as a distinguished taxpayer in 2011 for a second year running.” He added, “The company established a high horsepower rebuild centre in Kenya for Cummins engine customers in East Africa”. Car and General is the distributor of Piaggio threewheelers, TVS and Suzuki motorcycles, Briggs and Stratton power equipment and Cummins diesel generators among other lines.

ometimes we want more from life than it can offer us. We want what we want and we want it now so we give up the 80% for the new and exciting 20%. It doesn’t take an Einstein to figure out the consequences of such an action. Take the case of Jade, read on. For most people, the car they own ceases to be just an asset and slowly morphs its way into your llife. Slowly it is no longer just a car but you name it, Jade or Sasha Fierce. You fantasized about owning it for a long time even having dreams of how life will be once you get it at some point. So you embarked on making sacrifices to make this happen and finally the day came when you hand-picked it yourself and made it your own. You came in and walked out the proud owner of this lovely set of wheels. No one can faze you and you cannot stop grinning. You vow to be the best car-owner who walked the face of the earth, you won’t be like those idiots who do not know a thing about cars. You will be differeni. fancy buttons, how much fuel it takes, how fast it picks speed and how many people you can cram in for it to be really full. Sometimes it deviates from the perfect dream you had but it’s new and those things seem so small so you can comfortably let them slide. No need to be ungrateful. So you and the car-which you inappropriately nicknamed Jade-, start to make memories. You introduce her to your friends and she pops up every few seconds in your sentences. The road trips with your friends, the day it rained & thank God you had a car so as people were busy getting drenched on the highway you were listening to Kidum, the PG unfriendly moments in that car, the day you got drunk and spewed al your nyama choma, the day you got flagged down by a cop and you thought you were going straight to Kamiti and most importantly the appointments you arrived just in time for which if it wasn’t for the car would not have happened. You are willing to give up a lot to make your car happy. So you get her raised, colored, customized seats, new music, fancy air freshener. You even avoid all bad roads and if you must the maximum speed is 10kph. You’re in love so the world is at your feet nothing and no-one can come between you. It has experienced so much with you it’s like a family. As time passes, you start getting into a sort of understanding. You know what the car has to offer and she knows your driving so you co-exist mutually. You slowly resign into a pattern of mutual understanding. You know her boundaries, she cannot move at more than 30kph uphill, she cannot go up the Chinese bumps on Thika Road without scratching her under-belly, she has started to consume more fuel and she starts to shake January - February 2012

You however start glancing at other moti’s in traffic, albeit guiltily, whats the harm your only looking anyway. Familiarity breeds contempt they say slowly this pattern starts to get to you. Since you know what she can offer, you raise the bar. You start wanting more while you give less. You want more speed so you step on the gas pedal harder, you want more efficiency in fuel consumption so you are always driving with the light blinking, and you want more service so you service it less. You want it to look like so and so’s car so every morning when you look at it all you feel is disappointment and bang doors, change gears carelessly and drive through town without a care in the world. point you. Other guys making so much less than you are driving guzzlers that make yours look like a mkokoteni. Soon she starts to embarrass you, when you have that date you want to impress and she refuses to start. You are stuck in traffic on a rainy day and the window refuses to close. Then the worst moment occurs when your colleague buys a car and the guys at work who you used to give lifts start avoiding you after 5pm. You start to punish Jade even more blaming her for what she cannot do. Two can play at this game, and with time since you are giving less and less but expecting more, ‘Jade’ starts to get tired and starts to complain. Soon your mechanic becomes your best friend. The time between service reduces and now you actually have to spend a chunk of your hard-earned cash at Grogan. You have to make the hard choice. Has Jade outlived her usefulness, has the time come to change cars or is Jade worth sticking with? So you start to realize how good Jade was to you, how she served you, how you are used to her and appreciate the magnitude of this even more. A choice must be made. If you stick by her, taking her back to good performance will cost you, a cost you would have avoided if you had just taken good care of her in the first place. You have to accept that the treatment you accorded Jade was wanting and make a vow to check your habits in the future. The other option is accepting that you have both reached your limits and you want more than the other can offer so you can have one last drive and trip but after that you should let each other go. What is Jade’s fate? Your guess is as good as mine. Ciao!

n every crowd, there are always a few individuals who stand out while the rest tend to blend into the background. Unfortunately for Suzuki, the 2011 Grand Vitara is one of the latter. That’s not to say that there’s anything dramatically wrong with this compact SUV. It’s just that the Grand Vitara tends to be overshadowed by its more highprofile competitors and doesn’t offer enough compelling reasons for us to recommend it. On the upside, the 2011 Suzuki Grand Vitara comes with a long list of standard features that you’d normally expect to pay extra for, such as automatic climate control and a navigation system. An attractive price, a powertrain warranty and an available four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer case. Other than these distinctions, however, the Grand Vitara is simply outclassed by compact crossovers like the Honda CR-V. For not that much more money. There are also other top small crossovers to consider, such as the Kia Sportage, Subaru Forester and Toyota RAV4. Realistically, all of the above will likely provide a more satisfying ownership experience. But for buyers who are focused on value or looking for a compact crossover SUV with a higher level of fourwheel-drive capability, this Suzuki is worth a look. January - February 2012

4 Wheel Drive Review Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options The 2011 Suzuki Grand Vitara is a compact crossover SUV that is offered in three trim levels: base, Premium and Limited. Standard features for the base model include 16-inch steel wheels, automatic headlights, keyless entry, automatic climate control, full power accessories, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-only leatherwrapped steering wheel with audio controls, a trip computer, an integrated navigation system and a four-speaker sound system with a CD player. The midrange Premium trim level includes all of the base model’s features and adds a four-speed automatic transmission, rear privacy glass, heated mirrors (4WD models only), cruise control and an upgraded navigation system with real-time traffic, a Google search function, 3D map.

Bluetooth is optional on all but the base models. Powertrains and Performance Now that the V6 engine has been dropped, all 2011 Suzuki Grand Vitara models are powered by a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder that produces 166 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on base models, while all other versions get a four-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is standard across the lineup, but Premium models can also be had with a four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer case. Limited models are offered with a four-mode 4WD system (4H, 4H Lock, 4L Lock and N). In performance testing, a rear-drive Grand Vitara required 10.2 seconds to reach 60 mph, a slow time for this segment. Fuel economy estimates for the 2011 Suzuki Grand Vitara are average, with automatic 2WD models getting 19 mpg city/25 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined and 4WD models earning 19/23/20.

iping out kiosk mentality from Kenyans is not an easy thing to do. This is something that even the most educated, cultured, motivational speaker, philanthropists, rich and poor person will find a hard nut to crack. When one mentions going to the garage we always think about a shabby and dirty place in a corner of a street full of broken down cars and unkempt mechanics. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Unity Auto garage Mr. M.I Rashid, has broken the rules and gone to higher heights to venture into breaking this mediocre mode of thinking. The man with over 35 years of experience in the garage industry runs one of the most hi-tech garages in the country. “ I started Unity garage as a kiosk idea in 1974 in Muthurwa, I didn’t even have a car I was walk-

ing on foot, but I had a bigger vision so I worked hard to transforming it into a professional hi-tech garage, he proclaims”. The former aircraft engineer worked for East African Airways for 10 years and did garage work as a hobby. The Unity garage was realized in 1974 out of Rashid’s love to repair and fix automotive machines; he did not have any training in this industry. “My two sons seem to have followed in my footsteps and they are also actively involved in the motor industry. One has been designing vehicles and has been chosen to go and design vehicles overseas, something that I am very proud of because they learnt the state of the art from me, he acknowledges”. Mr. Rashid came up with a concept of starting an association for the garage industry in Kenya which gave birth to Kenya Automotive Repairers Association (KARA) six years ago. This is an umbrella body for garages which was formed in partnership with Association of Kenya Insurers, Insurers, Assessors, various garage. “KARA was started because of the chaos and contradictions between car owners, insurers, assessors, whenever a vehicle was involved in an accident. There was always a great conflict among the parties involved so (CEO) for Unity Auto garage Mr. M.I Rashid 20

Break Failiure What to do and not to do

M

odern day vehicles have so many safety features built in that it makes the scenario of you having to drive with no working brakes almost far-fetched. Still, a car is a piece of machinery, with thousands of moving parts making it what it is. And we all know machinery does brake down. One of the most dreaded thing that could happen is the failure of the braking system on your car. And it is also the most dangerous of them all. Why? Because if the car is moving when this unwanted event occurs, you have very

few choices at your disposal to bring the car to a safe stop. Driving with no brakes, whether you are aware of the problem or not, is both illegal and not recommended. We will not try to teach you how to drive a car knowing that the braking system is malfunctioning. We will only try to give you a few tips on how to react if the malfunction takes place while you’re driving. Brake failure Brakes can fail to work properly due to a number of reasons. Two of the most common are the fading of either the fluid in the braking system or the fading of the car’s brake pads. Both of the two reasons can be simply resolved by taking the car in for regular servicing. To make sure that you will not have anything to worry about, avoid putting to much stress on the brakes by pressing them hard and for long periods of time. Begin braking from a large distance at all times and slowly bring the car to a stop. Knowing there’s a problem There are basically two types of braking failures. The first one takes place over a period of time and can be ob-

Ask The Mech braking from a safe distance is recommended. By doing so, the increased distance between the renegade car and the obstacle in front of it will allow you the time required to snap out of it and try to bring the car to a safe stop.

served if you pay attention. The increase in stopping distance, a change in the way the brake pedal feels and maybe an unusual sound when applying the brakes are tell-tale signs that something will go wrong. Have the car serviced if you notice such behavior. The second type of brake failure is the sudden malfunctioning. Whatever the reason, such a failure is the most dangerous and can turn into an accident. It is very hard to notice a sudden brake failure, as you will only know there’s a problem while applying a brake. If this happens, it will become very hard to keep you cool and act accordingly. First sweaty moments Generally, when brakes fail suddenly, you will panic. This is another reason why January - February 2012

What NOT to do: Some of the guides circulating on the Internet call steering the car sharply from side to side a good way of stopping the vehicle with no brakes. They even describe how to do this. The friction created by the left-right-left movement can stop the car, as those guides claim, but under no circumstances should you try and do this. You will endanger other motorists, as well as yourself, for no reason at all. You can crash or roll-over, so DON’T! First and foremost, don’t panic. But since we already established that you will do that, let’s move on. Having no brakes (and knowing it) is enough to make the survival instincts in you lash out. They will tell you to jump out of the car. DON’T. They will tell you to hit a tree, or a car, or whatever, to come to a stop. DON’T. They might even tell you to turn off the engine. DON’T do that either. Pull yourself together, take your foot of the gas, keep the car on the road and do one of the following: Engine brake The most commonly used technique to stop a car by not using the brakes is the use of the engine. Simply called engine braking, this method works by using the compression phase of an engine to slow down the car. It can be used while braking from both high and low speeds. You can do this without having to know any skillful moves. You just press the clutch and shift into a lower gear. The car will begin to slow. Say your brakes fail while you’re in fourth gear. 25

Ask The Mech You simply downshift to third and then again to second. The car should grind to a halt. In case the car appears not to stop, you can even go for the first gear. This final move should be done cautiously, as it may stall the engine or do the exact opposite and give it an extra notch. And you really don’t need that. You can skip gears while using the engine brake, but this can damage your car. If done properly (and fast enough), downshifting gear by gear can stop the car within the required distance. Gear-by-gear downshifting is the only method to be used if your car is fitted with an automatic transmission. Emergency brake The third braking system available on any car is the emergency

26

brake (a.k.a. hand brake, foot brake or parking brake). The use of this method is less effective than the engine brake. It can safely stop the car from lower speeds, but it requires a longer distance when applied at higher speeds. There are two types of emergency brake, activated either by hand (the brake is located between the two front seats) or by foot (the foot brake). There is no intricate forces at work here. The emergency brake works by activating rear drum brakes, the rear disk brakes, or the drum brake on the transmission tail-shaft, depending on what type of car you are driving. The use of the emergency brake instead of the engine can be dangerous. The hand brake is used in drifting. If the conditions are met (speed, direction), instead of stopping the car you can start sliding off the road. With no brakes... These are the two methods which can get you out of trouble. Or should we say stop you from getting into a bigger one. The techniques can be used together as well, but this requires some skill. And since showing off is not exactly what you are going for in such moments, applying one of the two methods in a simple and safe way is the right approach.

F

or the longest time bikers have been having a heated debate on which is a better bike, the YAMAHA or the HONDA models. Now the debate has shifted to the new kids on the block. The BMW and the KTM which is more superior? Its believed that BMW”s are reliable and comfortable.Ewan Mc Gregor and Charley Boorman of the famous “long way down”attested to this on their GS1200 bikes. The GS is very popular with overland bikers with their metallic panniers, gps mountings, tank bags, tyres, pretty much looking like they are going to war. The KTM on the other hand is perceived as a racing bike. Its a fa-

vourite in the Dakar and has been winning consistently for the last couple of year’s now.So popular is it that it’s the preferred model in most motocross, supercross, xgames and enduro events worldwide. The BMW 1200GS is German technology at its best. The GS1200 has a horizontally opposed engine. It is fuel injected and driven by a shaft and has tubeless tyres so goodbye tyres levers and chain lube.It weighs 229kgs and has a fuel capacity of 20 litres. It comes with ABS among other trappings. The 1200 looks very bulky. The KTM 990 adventure on the other hand is made in Austria looks racy and aggressive like a Dakar bike and has a V-engine. It is also fuel injected and chain driven with tube tyres. It also weighs 220kg and has a fuel capacity of 22 litres. The minute you seat on the KTM 990 it feels small, like a 450 enduro bike but when you look at its profile it looks massive. The bike has a narrow tank and relatively narrow handlebar compared to the BMW.The KTM’s instruments are flashy orange, the rev counter and to its left the LCD speedo and trip computer. The sound of the KTM”s 990 V-twin engine keeps revving and this tells u that this is no cruiser but a racer wanting to be ridden

January - February 2012

Bike Review hard.. THE KTM ON-ROAD The KTM peaks very fast and can cruise effortlessly between 140 and 160km/h.The accelerator responds instantly to any commands and even on top gear you will be amazed at how easily it overtakes. The bike requires you to ride it but it hard but it instills confidence very quickly. The negative side is that there is more vibration on the handlebars than on the BMW,although not in an unbearable way. The KTM has a harder seat that is not as comfortable as the BMW. Then again one finds himself more forward on the KTM seat on twisty corners than on the BMW.

January - February 2012

Due to its narrower handlebar the KTM requires more input when counter-steering at speeds, the bike wants to be upright and does not lean over as quickly or as easily as the BMW.Wind protection from the screen is adequate. MAKES US SMILE: Fabulous motor with superb throttle response and plenty of poke. (This is KTM’s first effort? Everyone else should quiver in fear.) Long travel suspension eats everything...and we mean everything. Confidence-inspiring in its own odd way. Really. MAKES US FROWN: Too damn tall. Crashing one would be like jumping from your garage roof. Already grown weary of the orange hue and the wedge du fromage aesthetic. Easy to override the tires. Brakes not quite up to available velocity. Too damn tall. THE BMW ON-ROAD The GS feels wider compared to the KTM,partly due to its wider handlebars and bigger engine. The instruments on a GS aren’t as flashy as the KTM, just the usual rev counter, speedo and computer. But the newer versions are

Bike Review more detailed. When pulling off its evident the BMW has more bottom end power courtesy of its bigger engine displacement and longer stroke engine. When accelerating through the gears the effortless nature of the engine and gearbox becomes apparent and the 200cc deficit apparent. The BMW has a smaller 19-inch wheel and metzeler tourance road tyres, while the KTM has a bigger 21-inch wheel and has Pirelli scorpion dirt oriented dual purpose tyres. This makes the BMW more stable on the road. Over long distance the bike is pleasurable and you can ride for hours without getting tired as the seat is very comfortable. The bike handles very well at high speeds and can get upto 200km/h quickly enough, this in itself makes it capable of keeping up with superbikes.Steering and stability are superb because of the boxer design, low centre of gravity and horizontally opposed engines. The BMW’s is also equipped with ABS breaking system which is superb on the road and it doesn’t skid at all. MAKES US SMILE: Great Everyone else should quiver in fear.) Long travel suspension eats everything...and we mean everything. Confidence-inspiring in its own odd way. Really. Comfy and sexy piece of work. MAKES US FROWN: Too damn

tall. BMW OFFROAD Getting off-road with the BMW one realizes that the bike can also hold its match. The BMW actually turns sharper and easier thanks to its smaller 19-inch front wheel and lower centre of gravity. At low speeds the boxer engine isn’t prone to stalling easily and engine response is smooth.Engine braking is great and can be used effectively in very fast dirt conners. The downside are its tyres which are on-road but with knobbies the traction could be better. The front brakes are very sensitive while the back brake steering enjoyable. The suspension off-road isn’t as good as the KTM’s. KTM OFF-ROAD Off-road the KTM 990 Adventure is very much at home. The KTM likes to be ridden hard and steers by the rear wheel just like the Dakar bike it is.The 990 is very confidence inspiring and will turn any novice rider into a daredevil by the time he hits third gear! The more u ride it the more it responds positively and the more you enjoy. The bike doesn’t respond well to cautious slow speeds even on bad terrain as the revs have to be kept up otherwise it stalls. The KTM has superior suspension absorbing anything in sight. The Telelever suspension system works perfect-

Bike Review ly on road but when u hit a ditch suddenly its not very comfortable. The KTM is also easier to wheelie over obstacles being lighter than the BMW. The KTM has a higher seat height and lower handle bar risers making it easier to stand comfortably for long hours. On both bikes shifting gears up and down was easy to perform while standing. Conclusion The verdict is that the BMW offers better comfort, traction, speed and maneuverability on the road while the KTM performed better off-road with superior suspension, handling and acceleration. Personally I think none of the two bikes is superior to the other they are just different bikes appealing to different types of riders.

he tuning world has spawned a lot of evil breeds, and by this we mean methods of vastly increasing the power of an internal combustion engine. Apart from the mechanically-driven supercharger, probably the most common type of increasing an engine’s power delivery is by using an exhaust-driven turbocharger. Being created more than 100 years ago, some time after the supercharger, the turbocharger has continuously evolved along the internal combustion engine and by now there are millions of cars equipped with this technology on the road. Now, before getting into the whole oomph and whoosh of the turbines, we need to comprehend at least the basic functioning of an internal combustion engine. Like most devices that include internal explosions in order to work, the internal combustion engines have to “breath. In other words, they have to draw in air and fuel for their energy. This energy transforms into power the second the air and fuel mixture is ignited. After all this happens, the exhaust gasses created by the explosion are being expelled from the engine. This usually exemplifies the four strokes of a regular Otto-cycle engine.

34

In order to create a better combustion, and hence more power, engineers have a number of choices, from which we are evidently only choosing the turbocharger as our point of discussion. Basically, the turbocharger makes the air and fuel mixture in the cylinders of an engine more combustible by forcing more air in. The surplus air is directed into the engine’s combustion chamber, thus creating more power when the pistons are forced downward (or sideways if we’re talking about a Boxer engine) by the resulting explosion inside. The turbocharger accomplishes this work by compressing the air molecules coming into the engine, thus making the air the engine “breaths” more dense. Basically an air pump, the turbine works in a very similar way to the supercharger, the only major difference residing in the way the pump is powered. On a turbocharged car, hot exhaust gasses expelled by the engine are first routed to the turbine wheel side of the turbocharging system to make it rotate at very high speeds, which are usually in the 150,000-200,000 rpm range. As that wheel spins faster and faster in causes the second wheel in the turbocharger system to also spin rap -

January - February 2012

Performance idly. This second rotation pulls in air from outside the car, it compresses it and then it forces into the combustion chamber. Since the basic laws of Physics tell us that compressing air makes it not only dense but also hotter, thanks to both the compression and the friction involved, this came as somewhat of a disadvantage. One of the few disadvantages this supercharging system has. Enter the intercooler, charge-air cooler or heat exchanger, whatever you want to call it. This acts as a normal radiator and can use either air or water to cool down the air coming out of the turbocharger and entering the engine. The basic principle of a turbocharging system is rather simple but we’re talking about a fairly complex device on the whole. Advantages: Free power: The most obvious advantage is the “free” power added to the engine. Practically, instead of wasting the thermal energy coming out of the engine through a normal exhaust system, those expelled gasses can be redirected to rotate a turbine which in turn rotates another one that is used to pump fresh air into the combustion chamber at much higher pressure than normal atmosphere, hence the term “forced induction”. Better weight/power ratio: Since instead of using more cylinders January - February 2012

or a bigger displacement to achieve higher power output, the overall weight of a turbocharged engine is much less than a bigger natural aspirated engine. This can lead indirectly to better handling, acceleration and braking, since there’s less weight to carry. Disadvantages: Turbo lag: The main downside of a turbocharger, especially compared to its supercharger counterpart is the lag in engine response at low rpm. Since the turbine has to spin at a given speed before actually becoming efficient enough to make a difference in the power output of the engine, this is experienced in what is called “turbo lag”. There are different ways to counteract this, but the lag is still present, though much lower, even in modern engines. Temperature: Another disadvantage comes from the actual compression of the air, which increases its temperature, therefore minimizing its volumetric efficiency. This in turn goes exactly against the effort of the turbocharger itself, but the problem can be greatly minimized by the addition of an intercooler. This problem can be found in any forced induction engine, no matter by which method. 35

T

o all motoring funs, history was made in Kenya, on the 5th November, 2011 hosting the very first Dyno day in eastern and central Africa..... When you hear of Dyno Day most people think of an event that normally takes place outside Africa. Dyno Day is popular in the U.S. and Britain to name a few countries. The thing is the organizers were shocked with the attendance on both days, namely the main dyno day and the bikers dyno day on Sunday 20/11/11. All in all this was a great event. It basically gave guys the opportunity to know what they really had under their hoods. As for those who missed out, well..... Next time we have a Dyno Day, DON’T MISS IT... There were six bikes on the Bikers Dyno Day and this were the results. 1. Allan Stylez 2007/8 Yamaha R1 - 199.8WHP 2. Charles Kimenyi Yamaha R1 - 175.8WHP 3. Rally Season Starts in Early February The eight leg Kenya Commercial Bank sponsored National Rally Championship starts in early February, according to the latest draft 2012 Motorsports Calendar. Kenya Motor Sports Federation (KMSF) Chairman Dave Macharia says one of the most exciting aspect of the 2012 rally season is the concept to explore new venues away from the usual competitive stages in Kajiado and Athi River where drivers “brag” they can drive without navigators. The first event (KNRC 1) takes off on the weekend of February 4-5 organized by Rallye Sports Club in Nyeri. This will be the first time in many years that Nyeri will be playing host to a full KNRC event. The last time the roar of turbo machined rocked the town was when Nanyuki Rally Group (NRG)ran its Day 1 spectator stage in Nyeri in 2006 graced by hundreds of spectators. The rally season ends with KNRC 8 organized by the Forest Road based Sikh Union Club. KCB Safari Rally 2012, a round of the FIA African Rally Championship, is indeed the major highlight of calendar slated for the weekend of June 9-10. Next January - February 2012

year’s Africa Concours d’Elegance will be held in the grounds of Nairobi Racecourse on September 30. The 2012 edition will be the 42nd annual Concours organised by the Alfa Romeo Owners Club (Kenya). The Africa Concours d’Elegance is the classiest event on the KMSF calendar and is attended by 10,000 people (9,000 adults and 1,000 children). The Concours has Africa continental status for cars and motorcycles and has been an FIM AFRICA recognized and sanctioned event since 2006. The 2012 season starts with the KMSF Annual Awards on January 14 and the Hog Charge on the same weekend. The East African Motor Sports Club (EAMSC) will organize the first round of National Motocross series on January 22. Cross Country Raid which features cars, buggies, bikes and quads, has five rounds next year. Last year the Ganatra-sponsored Cross Country Raid ran four rounds. The Enduro which usually runs 6 rounds has one extra event. The Annual Rhino Charge takes place on June 3-4 organized by the Rhino Ark.

KMSF Sets a date for the Africa CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE BY SAMSON ATEKA

The Kenya Motor Sport Federation (KMSF) has allocated September 30th as the date for the annual Africa Concours d’Elegance which will be the 42nd in the series organised by the Alfa Romeo Owners Club. The event will be held at the Nairobi Racecourse and there will be 12 classes for all makes and types of cars and eight for motorcycles. Draft regulations have been submitted to the KMSF for approval and the organisers plan to launch the regulations in February together with the premiere of the Concours TV programme. The regulations follow the established pattern and there are only minor changes for this FIM AFRICA recognised and sanctioned event.

The main objectives of the Concours are to reward owners of well kept cars and motorcycles and give them the opportunity to showcase their highly prepared machines to spectators who flock to the Racecourse for this motoring and social occasion. Plans are in hand to hold a Classic Car and Motorcycle Sale to help link the owners of unwanted classics (made in 1987, or earlier) with prospective buyers. An Auto Jumble was introduced last year and will be repeated at the 2012 Concours for the sale of classic car and motorcycle badges, parts and manuals. There is growing international interest in the Africa Concours d’Elegance which will help to publicize Kenya as a holiday destination for motoring enthusiasts and special interest groups. A group of MG enthusiasts in Australia are planning to ship their cars to Cape Town for a motoring adventure through Africa which will include participation in the Concours on September 30th. The convoy will feature a variety of MGA and MGB sports cars which will be a great spectator attraction at the Nairobi Racecourse.

Country) within the FIM strategy and to comply on FIM events with FIM corporate identity, promotional material and compliance with FIM brand and logo. Meanwhile, FIM Africa members and delegatesled by Madam President BeaulahSchoeman also conveyed sincere congratulations to KMSF following the presentation of the Plaque. The KMSF wasincepted in 2001 when it took over sporting powers from Automobile Association of Kenya (AA of Kenya). Schoeman said: “As advised at the Congress in Cape Town, we purchased a crystal flame with our CONU’s logo and the inscription sandblasted into the crystal as a token of appreciation for all the assistance and support we received from the FIM’s retiring CEO, Mr Guy Maître. We were fortunate to have three African countries represented at the recently held FIM General Assembly in Portugal and I was therefore able to ask the three voting delegates of these Federations (FRMM – Reda Boukhari; KMSF – Kevin McCourt and MSA – Jacqui Monteiro), to also come to the stage for the presentation of our gift to Guy.”

Amit, Parma Plot for 2012 Autocross Season Amit Bhatt and his partner Sukhi Parma will for the third year running share theirStarlet-powered 1300cc turbo buggy for the 2012 Kenya National Autocross Championship. After making their debut in 2009, the Suvi Racing-sponsored duo are already hatching plans for an exciting speed drive in the new season. They have already made extensive modifications to their ex-Kirit Rajput buggy in preparation for the nine-round Autocross series which revs off at the Jamhuri Park on the weekend of February 11-12.Amit and Parma have made extensive adjustments to the frame, suspensions set up, tuned-up the engine and gearbox in a bid to outclass their adversaries. Amit is confident that the team has done everything they can to contest for a credible position this year. Commenting on the changes 52

Amit said; “Although we’ve done everything we can and we’re confident, we’re also realistic. We are trying to get into the top 5 because in the last two tyears we have driven quite slower as compared to the leading pack.” Amit’s most memorable and best race was the day he finished the 2010 MMC Ganze Autocross in 4th place and lost to eventual under-24 champion Charles Mugo by a few seconds. “Ganze was quite impressive and challenging in some way. There were too many jumps, blind bends and this was ideally a setting for rallying,.” remarked. Amit’s short term goal is to improve on his driving lines before announcing a major arrival into the rally sport. His buggy is being prepared at the Suvi Racing Workshop off Busia Road in Nairobi’s Industrial Area. Amit’s role model is indeed his Australia based father, Anil Bhatt, who raced a Datsun 1600SSS and a Toyota Levin in the 70s. That rallying runs in the blood of the Bhatts family goes without saying. His uncle Ramesh Bhatt also raced on Kenyan circuits a couple of years back. “Being a second generation driver, I have leant quite a lot from these guys. I met Sukhi seven years ago. From the onset, we had rallying in mind but we later found out that the costs are prohibitive and time consuming. So we settled on buggies instead,” said Amit.

Winning Start For Rolf, Jesse And Mbuki Rolf Kihara (MX65) and Apollo Mbuki (MX125) started off on a winning note as the 2012 Kenya National Motocross season started off at Jamhuri Park racetrack. Mbuki who is the outgoing MX85 Champion however admitted that he has to yet come to grips with his new big bike (KTM) in the MX 125 class. “The switch from MX85 to MX125 is obviously big and more intense. But I still feel I need to have more of the big bike so as I can get used to it,” remarked Mbuki. The University of Nairobi dentistry student Shivam Vinayak cruised to an easy win in the MX1 class riding his 450cc four-stroke Kawasaki contraption to a flawless 60 points score. The 2012 season welcomes three debutantes; two in MX50 and Abishek Rathod in the MX125. The MX50 newcomers are Ethan Nyachae and Jack Pelling- who is son of former Enduro rider Sean Pelling. Fans who turned out at Jamhuri Park track were treated to some exhilarating displays of riding artistry. Organizers East African Motor Sports Club (EAMSC) combined the MX1 and MX2 classes to enhance competition and entertainment of spectators. Tutu Maina won the MX2 class while Jesse Waithaka claimed the MX50 class for the diminutives. After living in the shadows of January - February 2012

Apollo Mbuki last season Samir Anwar was back in the groove in his MX85 class. Tutu Maina won the MX2 class beating Ivan Guya to second place. This wasGuya’s first race since returning from injury lay off. Daredevil rider Cruze Muigai was the notable absentee in the race though present as a spectator. Cruze is set to proceed to Great Britain for University education in September and has preferred doing selected races this year. “I’m not really that disappointed not to have ridden today. I will not ride seriously this season due to academic commitment. This year its basically for fun but I am planning to do the next national race and the FIM regional series in Uganda so that I can score points for Kenya,” said Cruze. The current dry and hot conditions rendered the Jamhuri park track dusty and slippery. But I will keep up practice and be in good shape come the February race,” said Shivam, who was last year voted Kenya’s most improved sportsman in the Safaricom Soya Awards. Conrad Quits Rallying, Eyes Dakar. Newly-crowned SA national rally champion and former Safari Rally winner ConradRautenbach is retiring from rallying, saying the sport in SA is “fundamentally flawed”. “I’ve won two FIA African Championships and the SA series as well as competed in the World Rally Championship,” said Rautenbach on the Rallyworld website. “The South African championship is one of the most competitive there is but it is fundamentally flawed in that it doesn’t follow the FIA rules regarding preevent recces which is dangerous considering the pace at which the leaders run. “The route note system used in South Africa requires a week of watching a DVD over and over on a TV set so that by the time the 54

rally starts, I’ve lost a lot of my motivation for the event. With growing work commitments, I simply cannot afford to take a week off for every rally. The other issue is the inconsistency over the application of the rules, which changes by the event.” Zimbabwean Rautenbach has expressed an interest in competing on the Dakar Rally in which South Africa’s Giniel de Villiers finished third last weekend. “Competing in the Dakar Rally has been a life-long dream and we will use the year to build towards an entry in the 2013 Dakar, which may include participating in some the SA off-road series,” said Rautenbach. “If things change in the SA Rally Championship we could return,” he saidincrease speed on corners and come out of them at a higher pace which to me is really exciting. We also learned how to manage pace notes at a high speed because this is a completely new ball game altogether. When hitting jumps it’s feels good and the landing is just nice and easy because we are now on Proflex suspensions,” said Muchiri who also tested the engine performance. January - February 2012

Historic Weekend For KTM The 2012 edition of the Dakar took riders on a 9000 km journey from Mar de Plata in Argentina to Lima, Peru and from the early stages it was dominated by KTM factory riders Cyril Despres and Marc Coma riding the latest KTM 450 Rally bike. Despres eventually prevailed to take the final prize, his fourth career victory in the toughest event in the annual motor sports calendar. Coma won five stages in the 2012 edition and Despres won four and right up to the penultimate stage the teammates were not only minutes apart, but also far ahead of the rest of the field. The result is a true reflection of what is one of the greatest rivalries in modern motor sports. It is not only a tribute to their riding and tactical skills and their physical and mental prowess but also to KTM engineering in producing the winning KTM 450 Rally bike and to the entire support team behind the riders. The fact that the same weekend saw the company’s first victory in the coveted and very competitive AMA Supercross in only the second round of the 2012 season made it all that more special. tory Edition. New to the team this season, Dungey already registered his intention last weekend scoring a podium third in the opening round in Anaheim 1. To add even more shine to the weekend, Dungey’s KTM factory teammate Marvin Musquin also finished second in the AMA West SX Lites race. Commenting on KTM’s historic Dakar victory, KTM’s Heinz Kinigadner was also quick to pay tribute to the efforts of the riders and the factory team to secure the company’s eleventh Dakar title. “This battle between Cyril Despres and Marc Coma was one of the tightest and one of the most interesting in the history of the rally. They were virtually wheel on wheel in almost every stage and they both gave everything, both physically and mentally. These riders set the standard in rally raid and they both deserve to go into the Dakar record books for this great effort.” DAKAR 2012 Overall Results after final Stage 14 Victory by Despres gives KTM its eleventh consecutive Dakar title 1. Movie Review Title: Immortals Available: Movie Theaters Rating: ***** Director: Singh

‘Immortals‘ is definitely one of those films that looks great and is less filling and won’t tax anyone’s mind. It’s pure escapism for both men and women of all walks of life. It’s that film that women will gladly go to with their boyfriends to check out some hardcore male bodies so you can be sure this film will do well. The fact that the film disregards some history like the fact that Socrates came along much later than 1228 BC, but quotes in the film are still used from him. I guess we can call that the Nostradamus effect of some intent foresight. Director Singh is best known for 56

the Jennifer Lopez movie, ‘The Cell’, which was just incredibly beautiful to watch. With the ‘Immortals‘, it feels like he was solely focusing on creating another visually stunning film and keeping his fingers crossed that our next ‘Superman’, Henry Cavill, would be able to work through some godawful dialogue. I’m sure making sure Cavill’s 8-pack was on constant display might help distract moviegoers from all the flaws. Now, I’m not saying many won’t enjoy the intense violence in 3D plus seeing Mickey Rourke’s Hyperion do some crazy damage to an ally like striking him in the crotch with a very large mallet (and that’s not some homoerotic subtext…unless you’re into the gut punching fringe fetish). What’s interesting is that while the ‘Immortals’ looks nothing like any other Greek mythology type film, the story feels like every other movie we’ve seen. It couldn’t have been easy for Singh trying to walk the delicate balance of creating stunning 3D visuals while keeping what could have been an interesting story intact, but it doesn’t seem like he had much of a script to begin with. One really nice aspect of Singh’s direction was the way that he directs the battle scenes and differentiates between man and god by slowing down the speed for the gods while the men fight in real time. One line that made everyone in the audience break out laughing was Mickey Rourke saying “A man’s seed can be his most dangerous weapon.” I was almost wondering if they were going to start talking about STD’s or something, but like with everything else in the film, there’s no need for explanation before we’re whisked along with more beautiful eye candy including Cavill’s abs, Pintos curvaceous body and Rourke’s odd looking helmet. Movie Reviews Title: Real Steel Available: Movie Theaters Rating: ***** Director:

In the not too distant future where robot boxing has superseded human boxing/MMA - a struggling robot fight coach discovers that he has an 11-year-old son who wants to know his father and a potential champion in a discarded robot named Atom. Real Steel is generic, it’s clichéd, it’s formulaic but most importantly it works. Real Steel takes the premise of the once-titanic children’s toy – Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Robots – and brings it to life. Unlike something like The Transformers, there wasn’t an established ‘story’ with ‘Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Robots’ – other than the obvious. So without any qualms about being anything else, we’re presented with a great underdog story mashed with a reunion story of an estranged father and son and the whimsical childhood fantasy of “how cool would it be if Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Robots were REAL?’ The rest of the characters portrayed don’t really get the screen time to offer any real substance because the focus of the film is on the relationship between Max and Charlie. Bailey (Lilley) does give some humanity and back-story to how Charlie arrived at the Charlie in the film, while portraying the ‘Adrian!’-esque love interest January - February 2012

but the other peripheral characters feel like 2D caricatures for the sake of the core relationship. Finally, it would be remiss of me to not talk about director Shawn Levy, who does an accomplished job of contrasting the futuristic fighting arena engulfed in technology with the beautiful and iconic American countryside. The sunset hues of the landscape are idealistic and natural, compared to the fluorescent led of the fight arenas really showcase the film’s nostalgic impression of the future. The robo-fighting action in Real Steel does not feel stale like Transformers, where at times you feel like you’re watching a cut scene from a really expensive video game. The action is exciting because you’re seeing the human interaction determining the robot’s fate. The human robot interaction makes it engaging and interesting and has you rooting for Atom’s underdog fighting bot throughout. Real Steel is real fun – get your bot in the ring! 57
