Feedback Ask The Mech

Women Only

Ask The Mech

My car is shaking the steering wheel really badly regardless of brake application and pulls to one side. Do I need an alignment and new struts and shocks?

I have a very small newborn. What seat is best?

What do you need to do if there is a leak beneath your car which you believe is oil?

Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the minimum weight. For premature or very small infants, you can also try a car bed or infant seat with low or no minimum weight limit.

Crawl under look at the pan bolt, drain plug, oil filter one or more may be leaking if it is your pan gasket you can take it to a mechanic you trust, not any muthurwa mech.

Ask The Mech

Performance

When I first apply the brakes they feel fine, but when I sit at a stoplight the pedal gradually sinks to the floor. Why?

Every time I go over a bump, my front suspension bangs / knocks / clonks. Why?

While you might need both of these it would be strictly a coincidence! This is just about the most common inquiry we receive and I have yet to receive feedback that the problem was other than a tire. One of your front tires is ready to blow out or separate, so please don’t waste a moment and get to a tire store. Meanwhile, do not drive at a higher speed than that at which you would feel comfortable with a blowout. The tire is probably the one on the side that the car is pulling towards and may well look ok in terms of tread depth. If a rear tire is failing the symptoms will be similar except that the pull will be absent and the entire car will shake but not particularly concentrated in the steering wheel. There ARE other problems similar in symptoms to a failing rear tire but NONE the same as the front tire failur

The master cylinder has an internal leak bleeding off pressure. The car needs immediate professional attention because there is no way to predict what the brake pedal will do next time.

The most likely cause of this is the big rubber bush at the top of the front suspension mounts. If it has perished and worn out, then the top of the suspension is knocking against the inside of the suspension strut tower. Another symptom of this is if you park the car and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock, then move off slowly, there will be a “sproing” type noise as the suspension spring untensions. You should invest in new suspension bushes

This MONTH Well the year has come to an end yet again. Many motoring events have happened this year, be it the Subaru Fest, Total Motor Show which only happens after every two years, and the concour that is yearly. Question is what is new in 2012? Will it be exciting as this year? Well we just have to wait and find out. What really made my year was the news that KMSF were issued 100 acres of land, which means finally Kenya might be getting a race track, where we can test your vitz and bicycles. Finally! Well in this issue we take a look at the Toyota Hilux, BMW 318i, and the Honda CBR. We also talk about Dyno’s, what they are and what they do... Also the Total Motor show, its highs and lows, what was new and what just have to change next time. Thats it from me folks... Enjoy!

Cayenne, China Boost Porsche Sales Again Porsche has once again managed to stay well ahead of the global market in sales, with a 37 percent increase for the month of September, adding up to a 10,560 total figure for the month. For the year to date, the Stuttgart automaker has managed a total 90,972 units sold, which is almost as much as the whole of 2010. These figures were helped by demand for the Cayenne SUV, of which 5,266 were delivered in September, an increase of 46.4 percent over the same month a year ago. With 2,583 units delivered in September and an increase of 25.8 per cent, the Panamera also accounts for a significant share of Porsche’s success. Strangely enough, Porsche also reported a 20 percent increase in 911 demand, despite the fact that a new one was unveiled last month and will start being delivered on December 3rd. China also proved a deciding factor for the company, as they sold a total of 2.146 Porsches there, more than double the figure for September 2010. What’s more, one in five Cayennes were sold there. “We are ahead of last year’s good figures in all markets and with over 90,000 sports cars sold as of September are very close to our sales target of 100,000 units in 2011. That testifies to fascinating products and a very good performance throughout the entire value chain,” Bernhard Maier, Porsche AG Board of Management Member for Sales and Marketing. In more sporty news, more than 700 vehicles of the sporty, top of the range Cayman R model have already been sold.

Vorsteiner Porsche Cayenne V-CT Kit The Porsche Cayenne is such a spoiled child. Imagine how it is to constantly receive new aftermarket gifts from all parts of the world, with this also bringing you into the spotlights over and over again. Case in point: Vorsteiner is previewing a new modification package for the 958 (current generation) Cayenne. We are talking about an aerodynamic package that uses the V-CT designation, including a front fascia, side skirt extensions, a rear bumper that includes a diffuser, as well as a roof spoiler. Vorsteiner also offers some tech goodies, in the form of a titanium exhaust system, and a set of custom rims that come with a multi-spoke design, with both developments also having the role of saving weight. (the exhaust system is only offered for the Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo). The Vorsteiner V-CT package will be released by the end of the year.

Audi TT-RS Plus Coming with GT Treatment When Audi gave us the TT-S, fans were thrilled, but still wanted something more. The Germans listened and offered the world the TT-RS. However, there are still many that still want extra muscle and turn to aftermarket developers for that. Now, it seems that Audi also wants to cover that segment and is reportedly working on a more powerful version of the TT-RS. According to Automobile France, the vehicle is expected to arrive next year, with its turbocharged 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder engine being tweaked to deliver 385 hp , instead of its current 340 hp. Knowing the VW Group’s policy, we expect to receive a bit more than just a new ECU map, as far as the engine mods go. As for the rest of the car, Audi is expected to remove the rear seats, install new lightweight alloy rims and introduce other moves that should save around 60 kg, with the car also getting a fixed rear wing. Basically, we should get a miniature reproduction of what the GT treatment brought to the R8 and R8 Spyder. We’ll be back with more details as they become available.

Volkswagen Group Sells Over Six Million Cars in Nine Months Volkswagen has managed to pass the landmark six million cars sold for the entire group for the first time in a period of just nine months. The Group Board member in charge of sales Christian Klingler described the result as a key one on the way to eight million for this year. During the nine months between January and September, VW Group deliveries increased 13.9 percent across the world to 6.11 million cars. The automotive conglomerate also says that the month of September was also favorable for them, with 751,900 deliveries in Europe alone, adding up to a sales increase of 13.3 percent for the month. “We are very pleased with the development of the Group. Delivering six million vehicles in nine months represents a key milestone on the way to reaching our annual target of eight million vehicles sold in 2011,” Group Board member for Sales Christian Klingler stated. “We are also expecting very good delivery figures for the fourth quarter. We continue to keep a close eye on developments in global automobile markets, some of which are highly volatile.” In North America, sales improved 21 percent for the duration of the first nine months of the year, while the Asia Pacific region grew at a more moderate 17.3 percent. Yes, that does also mean that China was still the largest single market with 1.69 million cars delivered in the first nine months of the year.

Mitsubishi Evo Hybrid Confirmed, Coming by 2014 Here we go again, with a new episode of the story in which Mitsubishi fails to understand that desecrating the Evo could have devastating effects for the company: Mitsubishi president Osamu Masuko has confirmed to autocar that the next-gen Evo will use hybrid propulsion and will arrive sometime in the next three years. We have to remind you that earlier this year, Mitsubishi showed its intentions of killing the Evo altogether, as the company considers that such a model doesn’t fit its recently-embraced green philosophy. However, fans, together with an important part of the automotive media, fought back, which led to the company reconsidering the deal. Unfortunately, as you can see. Mitsu still hasn’t got it right. According to the aforementioned source, the executive didn’t offer the tech details of the deal, but many believe that the vehicle will use a diesel(!)-electric powertain, which should provide enough muscle for a sub-5 seconds 0 to 62 mph sprint, while keeping CO2 emissions under the 200 g/km mark. Let’s say that the aforementioned sprint time could be achieved, but, last time we checked, an important part of driving an Evo was the way in which this makes you feel and we’re pretty sure that an oil burner will manage to wipe away all the smiles offered by the rest of the car. Yes, we’ll probably get an updated version of the S-AWC all-wheel-drive system that allows the Evo to laugh in the face of supercars when driving conditions become poor, but anybody that’s driven a “performance” diesel will tell you that it doesn’t even come close to petrolpower in terms of thrills. We’re waiting for more backfiring and we’re dying to find out Mitsubishi’s new reaction.

Anti-Gaddafi Armored “Bulldozer” Most of the pro-Gaddafi forces have stopped in Libya, as the formed dictator is now dear. However, this also required some hands-on efforts from the rebel forces and part of their efforts involved having a way to deal with snipers in the city of Sirte. The vehicle you see before your eyes is just that, a way to deal with those pesky snipers. It’s been painted in the new national color and has a strong resemblance to some of the first tanks ever created by the German army back in World War I. The bulldozer is protected by armor made of concrete sandwiched between steel plates. ‘’This is a bulldozer, we have developed in a way that it is armoured to defend the forces inside and it is capable of wiping out sniper positions on rooftops of buildings.’’ said one anti-Gaddafi fighter wearing a naval commanders hat, according to The Telegraph. Like a World of Warcraft character is protected by magic runes, so is this vehicle protected with the message “there is no God, but Allah, and Mohammad is his prophet.” We’re sure the vehicle we’re showing you here will end up in a museum ten years from now, symbolizing the new Libyan nation.

Revamped 2012 BMW S 1000 RR Launched BMW has taken the cores off the 2012 S 1000 RR, a new version of the bike that made them famous in the segment from its introduction back in 2009. The company says that the fresh bike comes to the fight packing better agility, response and riding precision. The 1-liter engine in the bike still makes 193 horsepower, but the torque is delivered in a better way. The power delivery modes have now been increased to three, with riders now having one curve for each Rain and Sport modes and an additional one for Race and Slick. The second gear of the bike has been shorted in order to boost acceleration, and the spring elements have also been revised. To check out the new extreme look of the bike and the fresh colors, check out the photo gallery below and the video provided by BMW.

VW Launches New Beetle and Up! Scale Models Volkswagen has a couple of new contenders for the market, the Up! and the new Beetle. We’ve come to expect scale model releases from the German automaker to follow shortly after the full scale car, and they didn’t disappoint this time either. The up is built in a tiny 1:87 scale but is well detailed given how small it is. You don’t get either moving doors, bonnet or a trunk, but at least you’ll have a lot of room for it on the dash of the real car. The suggested retail price for this on is about €15, but we can’t talk about availability at the moment. As for the Beetle, this is built in a much larger 1:43 scale, but it still doesn’t have all that many moving parts either. It also comes in a number of colors including White Pearl, Black Pearl, Dark Blue Metallic and Dark Silver Metallic The recommended price for this one is €23.

Mitsubishi Unveils New 1.8 MIVEC With 139 HP and Auto Stop & Go Mitsubishi has just announced technical details of their new 1.8-liter gasoline engine, the 4J10 that uses the automaker’s MIVEC variable valve timing system in combination with Auto Stop & Go (AS&G) to provide a combination of 139 hp and the promise of improved economy. The automaker has stated that it has seen a 12 percent improvement in fuel efficiency for a number of vehicles which it has tested. The 1.8 MIVEC will debut this month in Japan on the RVR ( JDM ASX or Outlander Sport) Galant Fortis sedan and Sportback (that’s a Lancer to you and me). The international model will also make use of the engine. We can’t know for sure if these figures will be kept for the US and European markets, but in Japan, the new 1.8-liter produces 139 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 172Nm (126.9 lb-ft) at 4,200 rpm.

Top Gear Didn’t Defame Tesla, UK Court Says Here is another episode of the Tesla-suing-Top-Gear story: the EV maker has lost an important battle in its court libel claim war against Top Gear, with Justice Tugendhat, at the high court in London, ruling that Top Gear viewers couldn’t have used the episode in which the Tesla Roadster runs out of juice several times at the show’s Dunsfold track to asses the vehicle’s real world performance. He explained that the Top Gear team tested the car on the track, which imposed a radically different driving style than the one used on public roads, where the car will be driver (most of the time). “In my judgment, the words complained of are wholly incapable of conveying any meaning at all to the effect that the claimant [Tesla] misled anyone. This is because there is a contrast between the style of driving and the nature of the track as compared with the conditions on a public road […] are so great that no reasonable person could understand that the performance on the [Top Gear] track is capable of a direct comparison with a public road,” Tugendhat was quoted as saying by the Guardian.

Hotel Valet Takes Supercar for a Joyride Being a hotel valet must be one of the toughest jobs in the world. We’re not joking here, just think about it - an important part of your daily routine is to drive some of the top exotics in the word depending on which hotel, obviously Muthurwa is not applied here... at a maximum of 15 kph for way less than a half a kilometer , in tight spaces, with around 100 real and virtual eyes on you. Well, it seems that certain people find a way around all that issues. According to a luxury4play forum post belonging to LLV John, a Miami exotic car rental, a customer accused a valet of driving 38 km around Miami in his rental supercar. The aforementioned distance might not seem like much, bust considering it was all done on a Miami Saturday evening, it was like the car was being driven on a proving ground.

The rental company is now investigating the matter, with the GPS set to tell a big part of the story. All that is known for know is that the vehicle is back at the garage in what appears to be a good shape, with the hotel offering to pay for the extra miles. The company didn’t mention the car that was kidnapped. but since they mention being worried about the clutch, we can assume we are talking about supercar.

Ferrari Enzo Abandoned in Dubai Enzo Ferrari is probably turning in his grave right now, with the reason being a yet unknown to us policy in Dubai, which brings a slow and agonizing death for supercars, with the latest victim being a Ferrari Enzo. According to luxury4play, the Enzo you see here is imprisoned in a Dubai impound lot, which seems to be the place where cars of entrepreneurs who fail end up. Some might say that the car just needs a good wash. but we have to consider that the amount of sand/dust and extreme temperatures in Dubai have a severe impact on a car. Al the cars in the aforementioned situation are reportedly going to be auctioned. but in the

Dubai is probably the most contrasting place in the world in terms of supercars, as on one hand we have the aforementioned situation, while on the other hand we have the customized examples that shine brighter than the desert sun.

Bruce Wayne’s ‘Batman’ Next Ride Tony Stark has an affinity for the Audi R8, in both coupe and more recently Spyder form. So what does that leave the other big comicbook billionaire turned superhero? A lot, apparently - Bruce Wayne will drive a brand new Italian thoroughbred in the next Batman movie. Batman: The Dark Knight Rises will reportedly hit cinemas on July 20th next year. The supercar even sports “Gotham” numberplates and is painted an understated silver. The move makes perfect sense to us, in Batman: The Dark Knight, Bruce Wayne drove a Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, which he smashed in one of the scenes. This isn’t a Batmobile per say, as mister Wayne has all the toys he needs to fight crime, thanks to the ingenious Lucius Fox. In our twisted journalistic minds, the Lambo is the perfect car for Bruce to un-

The New FORD FIGO Unveiled Bill Lay, the CEO of the CMC Motors Group and David Wamathu, the General Manager of the Ford Division, will unveiled the Ford Figo saloon which is a stylish competitor in the compact car market segment. The new award winning Ford has modern styling with a roomy interior and is powered by a fuel efficient 1.4 litre engine. Thanks to advanced design, this addition to the Ford range for Kenya has ample space for the driver and four passengers with good visibility through the large windscreen and side and rear windows. There is a world wide swing to smaller cars which are becoming increasingly visible on the Kenya roads and the Ford Figo will make an excellent choice for drivers requiring a comfortable, stylish and safe compact car designed for both tarmac and unsurfaced roads.

We’ll get to see the V12-powered beast in action next summer, and we are looking forward to its blistering performance being used to fight crime and impress Russian supermodels and prima ballerinas alike. The Aventador looks so awesome that we forgot to hate it for using product placement.

Next Nissan Altima Hybrid to Use 2.5-liter Supercharged Engine and New CVT When Nissan replaces the Altima mid-size sedan, the vehicle will get the company’s first, inhouse develops, frontwheel-drive hybrid powertrain. The system will replace the outgoing Toyota-based hybrid front-wheel-drive system and is set to arrive in 2013, as Automotive News writes. The system will share components with the one developed by the company for the rear-wheel-drive 2012 Infiniti M35h, which means that we’ll get a dual-clutch, single-motor, lithium-ion battery pack layout. However, the M35h’s 3.5-liter V6 engine will be replaced by a downsized supercharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder unit, which will work with a new, Xtronic continuously variable transmission. Nissan is currently working to develop the system and hasn’t officially confirmed that the Altima will be the one to get it, but this has the most chances.

The Kenyan Matatu Experience

I

by Emily Kamau

USED CAR OF THE MONTH

pay homage to all the Kenyans who have to get around using public transportation. A ride in a Kenyan matatu is like acting in a horrible low-budget movie shot in the part of River-Road that even the mechanics at Grogan fear to go. The twists and turns, the experiences and thrills are a truly unique Kenyan experience. The kange(conductor) will do all to sweet-talk you to get in their vehicle, they will clamor for you and fight till you are left confused at the value of a 50bob nowadays that can get guys to go at all odds to get it. People be warned, make use of this window; it’s the only time you can ask for anything and get a polite answer. If your seat is dusty, ask for the rug, if it’s hot ask if the windows open, if the space is small ask for him not to bring an extra person, bargain for your fare and most importantly inquire if the route they use is convenient with you. I say this because these few seconds are the only time s/he will act as a decent human being. Be warned, it’s downhill from here…… In the morning, life is a bit easier regardless of where you are from the No. 1 station is the Classic breakfast with Maina & King’ang’i which am sure most people are Lady Gaga about. However woes unto you if you

12

are travelling next to someone you respect. You can’t laugh or react but its funny so you also cant stifle laughter for an hour plus so what should have been a perfect ride to town turns to a very uncomfortable Hague-like experience. The journey home is a bit more interesting. On one extreme, the first thing that will happen is they will crank up the music to decibels the adult ear cannot handle. Surely we are trying to get home not audition for a Lil Weezy concert. The previously mellow music will instantly be replaced with extreme reggae fresh from Jamaica with an equally disturbing video of voluptuous women with very little on to boot. My friend you better resign yourself to this fate as the loud music will be followed by woofers and hydraulic systems for the full effect and I can only imagine that’s how like one Julianni feels after one of his head-bobbing concerts. On the other hand, for those guys who live in places which were once National Parks, you will find the guy you were seated next to and you thought they had a kid next to them had actually strapped a goat with a seat-belt and the warmth under your feet you thought was from the engine is actually a family of chickens comfortably feasting on your stockings! The light at the bottom of the vehicle wasn’t lighting system but holes on the floor of the matatu so you are actually viewing the road as you move…. The Makanga who has been quiet all this time puts his game face on, let the entertainment begin. He couldn’t overload at the stage because you will all have opted to get aboard the next vehicle, but now you are en-route and there’s very little you can do he strikes. On the nearest stage he starts

A lady at the stage might ask, “Kuna kita ama imejaa?” The Kanga not to be left behind quips “ Hawa wengine wamekalia ndoo, lakini wewe msupa tutakutafutia kiti”. I must agree that was a really fresh one I had to borrow it. Dare you ask for lesser fare than the rest “Madam, kimbia kwa petrol station ukunywe mafuta ya 20bob ndio ikufikishe mahali unaenda/”kalia hiyo pesa yako basi ikufikishe basi”. Only when he is satisfied that there can be no more victims suffocated in the car will you proceed. The Driver and makanga are not all to blame; people should also get matatuetiquette. Before you send me to Mutunga’s for libel, remember I am entitled to an opinion. Keep your phone conversation on the minimum, if you can’t help it then moderate your tone, you do know we have evolved from the paper-phones. The person on the other side will still hear you if you speak at a lower tone, just so you know. We don’t want to know the million dollar deals you are brokering and you are still using public transportation-get real my brother!- or what concoction Mama Junior is using that she now looks like Gaddafi. If you must eat avoid fried foods, you

aren’t being fair. Munch on a cookie or apple but fries complete with sauce and toothpick is pushing it. Don’t fart in the matatu, it’s too small a space and especially if the windows don’t open. If you had a suspicious lunch, get on a bus and sit at the window! Finally, women, the matatu is a public means of transportation not your personal salon. Don’t use hairspray and deodorant in the full public glare. Don’t dress in the matatu and most importantly don’t tell the person sitting next to you to hold up a mirror for you so you can put your make-up on or adjust your weave. Ciao!

What’s beneath and how it hugs the road?

he sixth generation of the legendary Hilux was introduced in 2005, but the 2010 model get changes to the engine range and trim level line-up. With pickup producers increasingly targeting the lifestyle market, the changes are aimed at improving the vehicle’s usability and appealing to a broader spectrum of drivers. The Toyota Hilux is one of the great motoring icons of the 20th century, and Toyota is keen to keep that iconic status alive in the 21st century. A raft of new improvements for the 2010 model year are less about grabbing attention, and are more about grabbing the attention of drivers who require a rugged and practical pick-up truck as well as the ‘lifestyle’ audience that seeks out go anywhere ve-

14

Toyota Hilux HL3 hicles to meet their adventurous hobby and lifestyle needs. Perhaps the most important of the changes for 2010 is the improvement to the smaller of the two diesel engines available. Previously sporting 118bhp, the 2.5-litre D-4D unit now boasts a more impressive 143bhp. It’s available with a five-speed manual transmission and the standard chassis which offers the option to shift between two and fourwheel drive, low and high ratio gearing and a lockable rear differential. Acceleration, top-speed and pulling power are all improved while C02 emissions remain the same. The Hilux also benefits from a system called Automatic Disconnecting Differential, which disengages the front differ-

ential when two-wheel drive is selected, aiding refinement, fuel consumption and driveability on the road. For increased convenience it is possible to shift from four to two-wheel drive on the move and from two to four-wheel drive below 60kph. The huge range of configurations remains for 2010, with Single Cab, Extra Cab and Double Cab models available in HL2, HL3 and Invincible trim levels. In the upper specification models an impressive array of equipment is standard with more high-tech options available, increasing the model’s potential as a more affordable alternative to a regular SUV.

Our verdict In mid-range HL3 grade the Hilux offers enough refinement to pass muster as an alternative family vehicle and it boasts more than enough equipment to make it a comfortable and refined working truck. Decent road manners and the usual impressive Toyota build quality combine to make it a refined vehicle in which to travel and the ruggedness of the four-wheel drive transmission and improved engine performance make the Hilux a practical and competent workhorse. Costs The increased performance of the 2.5-litre diesel unit allows pick-up drivers to consider whether they really need to opt for the more expensive and less economical 3.0-litre version. Running costs could prove favourable compared with a large traditional SUV for families and insurance costs should not be too troublesome, either. Space and practicality With the exception of slightly restricted legroom for rear passengers, the Hilux scores perfect marks with a tall cabin featuring plenty of space. Designed as a loadcarrying, weight-towing work horse the Hilux can be relied upon to perform a vast range of tasks beyond the scope of a regular passenger vehicle, while still retaining a degree of functionality for more mundane tasks. An extremely capable four-wheel drive chassis also adds to the practicality levels. Some more internal storage options may have been useful for working drivers, however. Controls and display The Hilux’s controls are as refined as can be expected from such a vehicle. The steering is a little vague but well within acceptable boundaries and although the gear lever is long with a similarly lengthy throw, the shifts are precise and smooth. The lever for the transmission transfer requires a strong arm to operate and with four-wheel drive activated the steering becomes heavier. The majority of the controls are car-like in their positioning and operation and the dials clear and concise. November 2011

For HL3 models are rather more luxurious than the basic HL2, with a smarter look outside that includes standard alloy wheels. Comfort There are few issues with basic comfort within the Hilux cabin. The grey plastics and seat cloth are not particularly inspiring, but the seats are comfy for front and rear passengers in the double cab and the interior boasts electric windows and air-con . Compared to some of its key rivals the Toyota diesel unit is refined, too. The basic rear suspension set-up can make the ride bouncy on occasion, but for the vast majority of the time the Hilux rivals passenger focussed SUVs in terms of ride quality. Car security Remote central locking is standard equipment and a locking tailgate aids security, if only with a cover in place over the load bay. Tinted rear privacy glass and a Thatcham Category One alarm are also of benefit. Car safety Safety is well catered for in the Hilux. The HL3 trim level gets driver and front passenger airbags, a collapsible steering column and even impact absorbing headlining. Four-wheel drive naturally comes with safety benefits; however the centre rear lap belt is a bit of a let-down for families. Driver appeal The Hilux’s affable on-road nature comes as something of a surprise. It’s considerably less cumbersome than might be anticipated and can be driven in a reasonably sprightly manner. The lack of weight at the rear combined with unsophisticated rear suspension naturally has an affect on handling, but the large vehicle remains easy to control, regardless. Performance from the improved 2.5-litre diesel engine is strong and hauling loads requires little additional effort. The driving position is also excellent with very large mirrors, although the cabin rear window is narrow. Interior plastics are functional but uninspiring Family car appeal The lack of a covered boot would be the major issue in using the Hilux as an alternative or ‘lifestyle’ family vehicle, but that can easily be rectified with the addi15

tion of one of a range of covered load bay options. Elsewhere, there’s little to stop the Hilux being used as a family vehicle or holding dual roles as a family and commercial vehicle. Families used to a road-going SUV will not find the size an issue and comfort and safety are both covered to an extent. First car appeal Few novice drivers are likely to find much in the Toyota Hilux that appeals to them. Its size would make it a daunting option for the inexperienced. As for me I love it.. Its like falling in love allover again. Like getting that first kiss from that special girl you have always wanted to sit next to in class in primary school. I guess you have to try this beast to love it. In terms of space it isn’t that appealing but in performance its a beast. Quality and image The Hilux has a sterling reputation thanks to the near indestructible nature of the previous five-generations. The latest version builds on this image with exploits such as being driven to the North and South poles. Accessibility The Hilux’s cabin sits a considerable distance above the ground, meaning it requires some effort to access. Grab handles are present for easier access as is a sill cover that can act as a step if required. The doors are very tall and more evenly proportioned than some rivals. At the rear, the tailgate is heavy and the load bed high, but no higher than that of rival

16

pick-ups. Stereo and ICE (In car entertainment) A radio, six-disc CD changer and four speakers are standard equipment in the HL3 model, but customers can upgrade to an excellent multimedia unit that combines iPod integration, an SD card reader, sat-nav and USB input. The four-speaker setup is hardly cutting edge, but proves adequate in terms of sound reproduction. Colours and trim There are some bolder colour options for owners using the Hilux as a ‘lifestyle’ vehicle, but for the most part the palette consists of sensible silvers and dark shades that will hold greater value second-hand. Interior trim is biased towards functional, with plain plastics and seat cloth. The interior is worthy but uninspiring, although optional leather livens things up a little. HL3 models get alloy wheels and heated door mirrors. Parking The Hilux’s huge size makes it something of a monster to wield around town and rules out more challenging car parks. The overhang leaves it prone in small parking spaces too. That said, it’s not unmanageable with its squared off proportions being reasonably easy to judge for an experienced driver. The turning circle is not as impressive as some rivals, but can cope with most situations comfortably. Spare wheel Full size spare stored under load bay. Range information Diesel engine options - 2.5-litre (143bhp); 3.0-litre (169bhp). Transmission options: five-speed manual gearbox, five-speed automatic gearbox, selectable four-wheel drive, low-ratio transfer box, locking rear differential. Trim levels: HL2, HL3, Invincible.

History of the Wheel

From the very early designs used for pottery purposes to the most advanced contraptions known to mankind, the wheel has been continuously driving our civilization like a catalyst in a chemical reaction. We thought it would be a good idea to take a stroll through the many stages of the wheel evolution and see where it’s heading now.

November 2011

19

COVER STORY In the Beginning......... Researchers agreed that 3500 BC is the year when the wheel was invented, which is more of a ballpark than an exact year. The place is Mesopotamia, the area now occupied by war-ravaged Iraq. The first wheel for transportation purposes is approximated to 3200 BC, its purpose being to move the Mesopotamian chariots.

To be completely historic, as noted here, the very beginning of the wheel goes back to the Paleolithic era (15,000 to 750,000 years ago). Back then, humans used logs to move large loads around. The main problem with this method of transportation was that many rollers were required, and care was required to insure that the rollers stayed true to their course. One theory as to how this obstacle was overcome suggests a platform, or sledge, was built with cross-bars fitted to the underside, thereby preventing the rollers from slipping out from under the load. Two rollers would be utilized, with two cross-bars for each roller, one fore and the other aft of the roller. Wooden spoked wheel It took another 1,500 years before our ancestors thought of the next step in wheel evolution, the spoke. The need for faster transportation and the idea of using less material stemmed this technological breakthrough. The Egyptians are credited with the first implementation of a spoked wheel on their model year 2000 BC chariots. They narrowed it by carving both sides to shape, but it was the Greeks that first introduced the cross-bar, or H-type, wheel. The first iron rims around the wheel were seen on Celtic chariots in 1000 BC. The spoked wheel remained pretty much the same until 1802, when G.F. Bauer registered a patent for the first wire tension spoke. This wire spoke consisted of a length of wire threaded through the rim of the wheel and secured at both ends to the hub. Over the next few years, this wire spoke evolved into the round tension spoke we see on bicycles today. Another major invention that came about the same with the wire tension spoke was the pneumatic tire, which was first patented in 1845 by R.W. Thompson. His idea was further improved in 1888 by John Dunlop, a Scottish veterinarian, who also patented it. Thanks to the smooth ride, Dunlop’s tire replaced the hard rubber used by all bicycles at that time. Automobile Wheels It’s fair to start talking about automobile wheels starting with Karl Benz’s 1885 Benz Patent Motorwagen. The three-wheel vehicle used bicycle-like wire wheels, which were fitted with hard rubber. Speaking of rubber, the first people who thought about using it for automobile purposes were André and Edouard Michelin, who later founded the famous tire company. In 1910, the B.F. Goodrich Company invented longer life tires by adding carbon to the rubber. Overseas, Ford’s Model T used wooden artillery wheels, which were followed in 1926 and 1927 by steel welded-spoke wheels. Unlike Karl Benz’s first vehicle, the car that “put America on wheels” had pneumatic tires invented by Mr. Dunlop. There was, however, a big difference between those tires and the ones we used today. Made of white carbonless rubber, the tire had a life expectancy of around 2000 miles. A tire only lasted for around 30 or 40 miles before it needed repairs. Common problems included: the tire coming off the wheel, punctures and the tube being pinched. Paradoxically, the next step in wheel evolution was the disc one, which bears more resemblance to the initial solid designs. As with many other things in our history, the change was prompted by lower costs as the steel disc wheels were cheaper to make. The rim could be rolled out of a straight strip of metal, and the disc itself could be stamped from sheet metal in one easy motion. The two components were welded or riveted together, and the resulting wheel was one that was relatively light, stiff, resistant to damage, easily produced in mass quantities, and most important, cheaply produced.

COVER STORY Alloy Wheel Perhaps now would be a good time to talk about the difference between rims and wheels. Though most people refer nowadays to wheels, especially alloy ones as rims, the term actually means the outer portion of the wheel where the tire is mounted. Coming back to our story, today there are basically two types of wheels for automotive use, steel and alloy, both of which have benefited from the technological advancements. As a result, the massive, heavy wheels of the early automobile days have become lightweight, strong spoked units. It’s worth noting that just as the first solid wheels turned to the spoked design in the relatively early stages of humanity, so did in the 20th century. Though we won’t get too technical about the differences between steel and alloy wheels, we will say that the latter are lighter and better heat conductors. As a result, cars fitted with alloy wheels sport improved steering and handling and prolong the life of the brakes. They are also more visually appealing, but that’s another story. On the other hand, alloy wheels are considerably more expensive to make than steel ones, which raises the overall price of the car. Future of the Wheel As the traditional wheel design is close to exhausting any possible development, companies are looking at more and more exotic prototypes to replace it. Among these, Michelin is probably the most active in the field of research with two recent innovative concepts, the Tweel and the Active Wheel System. Tweel Announced in 2006, the Tweel returns to the first designs by using a non-pneumatic solution instead of the traditional tire and wheel combination. The rolling surface consists of a rubber tread, which is bonded to the hub via flexible spokes. The flexible spokes are fused with a deformable wheel that absorbs shocks and rebounds. Michelin claims that even without the air needed in conventional tires, the Tweel still delivers pneumatic-like load-carrying capacity, ride comfort and resistance to road hazards. Though it offers many advantages, the Tweel is marred by a big problem: vibration at speeds over 50 mph (80 km/h), which only makes suitable for construction and personal mobility vehicles. Active Wheel System The concept is probably the most revolutionary of them all as it incorporates all of the car’s key components into the wheel itself. While only suitable for electric cars, the Active Wheel System houses the engine, the suspension, the gearbox and the transmission shaft.

Unveiling of the new Fortuner

et another year, yet another motor show. No, actually that’s wrong. Nowadays the Total Motor Show comes once every two years. But wait… last year we had the CMC Autorama, which is also scheduled to appear 38 times for every sighting of Halley’s Comet, so yes, yet another September, yet another auto expo. Welcome everybody, to the 2011 KMI Total Motor Show. As shows go, this one was no different from previous exhibitions, save for the fact that the venue has now returned to the KICC, back from the Ngong’ racecourse/ Jamhuri Park grounds where it has been staged the past two times. As international shows go, I am sorry to say our very installation was not so adventerous. Blame it on space, or the lack thereof. 24

But it is not yet time to gripe. Let us have a look at who was there, and what was of note. The event kicked off with the Transport Minister giving a lengthy speech: windy and full of promises. His focus on public transport in particular might prove to be his undoing; ever since Hon. Michuki vacated that docket, his successors have tried rather unsuccessfully to bring control to the untamed wilderness (and raving wildness) that is the matatu industry. He should have talked more on what other roads will receive the Far Eastern (read Chinese) makeover that Thika Road has received and if this means that we can now buy Lamborghinis and 911s without spending sleepless nights wondering where the hell we are going to drive this cars. All the usual franchise giants were there. Let us start off with CMC, who rank highest in sheer size of franchise.

They drove home this nugget of unnecessary fact by literally setting up an empire and occupying the highest square footage of all the exhibiting entities. In the Plenary Hall, their stand was easily three times bigger than the next biggest, housing Jaguars, Range Rovers, Suzukis, Volkswagens and something called a Ford Figo (Ford Kidney?).Oh well lovely car if i may say so.... There were two of everything, but a huge part of the attraction was the two Jags, both with blown mills: a white XKR that looked mean on black rims

and a brown XJ Super Sport that snarled with a rich voice that at first the engine was turned on, some of us thought one of the stands was collapsing in on itself. Rumor has it that a seven-figure cheque was signed as deposit for one of the two Coventry cats (my money is on the XJ) the first day the show was opened. DT Dobie thought to wow us with something called the E-Class coupĂŠ, which left me wondering then what the hell a CLK is, but that is a story for another day. On the other hand was the new CLS, which drew mixed reactions 25

Jaguar XKR from the local industry analysts (us), and I do not like it, the previous one had presence; this one just looks…nondescript, like it is just there. To round off the pack was the facelifted C-Class sedan on the front nearside and an ML squeezed into the aft offside corner. The display was rather underwhelming, save for the clever use of mirrors which allowed viewers to see the CLS from both front and back at the same time. Bavaria chose to exploit the strength of a woman, or women to be exact, and suggestively dressed women at that. The bevy of beauties almost overshadowed Bavaria’s beast and best, the F10, which was the star of their stand in 525d oil-burning form. This also tended to overshadow their stable mates-cumlandlords Simba Colt whose display was sorely lacking in creative appeal. At the Subaru display, curtains draped over the metal scaffolding (making them win the judge’s award for Best Stand in the Plenary Hall), and the IT/entertainment crew showed a video of Ken Block driving sideways in a 550 hp Impreza. I wonder what would have happened if CMC had chosen to show the same Mr. Block in his Fiesta at the Ford podium…would there have been a wobbly over who had the right to broadcast Ken’s antics? Toyota and GM’s stands had nothing major to report, save for the fact that at GM, five cars were spread over two models only, both from the same make. Hmm. could do better. pause. There was a lot more to be seen, especially in the commercial vehicle sector. At the Ganatra stand, they had the usual behemoths: tractors and diggers, but somewhere among them lurked a rather unusual Toyota Platz. This one had twice the number of cylinders a typical Platz had and made about 4 times the power, plus it was 2-door and very, very tall. It was actually a chassis from a Landcruiser VX onto which a cut-away Platz body had been mounted, and this whole mess was propelled by a 4.5 litre V8 from a Lexus. Just to keep things boiling, onto that huge V8 was screwed on a massive supercharger… CMC had their annex in the commercial sector, and again they occupied a sizeable acreage, with UD Man and the Land Rover Defender 90. There was also a Volkswagen Amarok, Kenya’s newest double-cab pickup, and the usual Ford Ranger clique. Foton, from China, made quite an impression combining a squad of comely lasses, impressive product lineup and outstanding customer reception to garner Best Stand, Trucks and Agricultural. This was unlike Kenya Grange Vehicles whose two Scanias stood there like sentries; a 340L lorry and an F310 bus. But that bus…my, my, what a bus. Perfect exterior finish, Boeing Dreamliner-like interior, three axles, reversing camera, single piece front windscreen, red carpet, mirror-lined passenger stairwell… you had to be there to see it. And that closes our Motorshow piece. You had to be there to fully appreciate it. For now, enjoy our pictorial and look for what you might have missed.

hat is Dyno Tuning? Dyno Tuning is a high quality, fine tune up for your engine. Using a specialised dynamometer your trusted technician can perform essential adjustments to your vehicle without guesswork, allowing them to carefully tune the air/ fuel ratio to exactly match your type of motor and create maximum efficiency.

What will Dyno Tuning do for your car? When your car is properly tuned it will create more power and use the least amount of fuel to do so. The result? Better performance, increased fuel efficiency and less carbon emissions. Why Dyno Tuning ? Because your car will have more power, you will spend less on fuel and you’ll help create a healthier environment for you and your family – a winning situation! - The turbocharger’s interior temperature rises at over 1100 degrees celsius every time the system is used; - The exhaust manifold and the turbocharger itself are pretty well shaken up during the ALS procedure, since they have to cope with an explosion which should have taken place inside the engine itself; - engine braking is very much reduced during ALS

operation

Q. How do I get my car dynoed? A. Well there are only two Dynos in Nairobi let alone Kenya. One is at Dynocom as seen in the photos and the other by Simon Sharpe. Q. Why should I let Dynocom to tune my vehicle? A. You’ve invested in your vehicle’s performance. Finish the job right by making sure the engine reaches its full potential. At Dynocom every vehicle is treated with the care and dedication that we would want for our own car. We have extensive knowledge of electronic engine controls, tuning software, high performance engine design theory and forced induction (supercharging, turbocharging). We have the experience to give you the best tune possible. We go the extra mile to make sure your tune comes out right. Q. What makes a Dyno tune better? A. At Dynocom tune is much more than a quick “tweak” of your car. We thorougly go over your car and your computer’s calibration and take the time to do the extra steps required for the best possible result. >> Full throttle, part throttle, idle, transient fuel (tip-in) and cold-start parameters are tuned >> Wideband Air/Fuel (A/F) Ratio gauge inserted in the tailpipe, for more accurate A/F readings >> Our Wideband Air/Fuel sensor is calibrated before each tune >> Fuel pressure is checked and/or set, timing is checked/set, spark plug checked for the correct type & heat range, O2 sensor function checked, ACT & coolant temp sensor function checked >> Tuned until the car is right, with no pre-set time limit or “rush-jobs”

Skyline R34 GTT on the dyno

Q. How long does it take to tune a car on the dyno? How many passes do you make? A. The short answer is “As long as it takes.” Regardless of the combination, to tune the car until it is right needs sometime. There is no pre-set limit on how many pulls can be done. Some cars are very simple to dial in, with straightforward combinations of parts, sensors that are calibrated perfectly, fuel systems that are working right, etc. Those cars are done in about an hour with as little as three or four full-throttle pulls and a few “miles/ kms” of part throttle tuning on the dyno. Other cars have more complicated setups (high stall converters, injectors or meters that are past capacity [“pegged”], FMUs that have to be recalibrated, fuel pressure that needs to be adjusted, spark plugs that need to be re-gapped, etc). A really complicated car could take all day and 15 or more passes. If you are waiting with the car while we tune it, be prepared to wait for at least a while. The best thing to do is to arrange to drop the car off for the day.

ASK THE MECH Torque, Boost (when applicable) and Air/Fuel ratio (tailpipe probe). A basic dyno check (“Baseline dyno”) Does not include any tuning.

Q. How much does it cost to dyno my Car/Bike? A. A basic dyno check of a car is 10k for an hour with a printout of Horsepower,

Q. Is the dyno hard on the car? What are the risks involved? A. Running the car on they dyno puts no more load on the engine than going full throttle on the street (or track). In many ways running a car on the dyno is actually safer than running your car full throttle on the street (or track), because conditions such as air/fuel ratio, coolant temperature and ignition timing are monitored closely. Any time an engine is operated at full throttle, whether on the street, racetrack or on the dyno, there is a small risk of something going wrong or a component failing. While this risk is actually somewhat smaller in the closely monitored environment of a dyno session, the risk still exists none-the-less. All dyno work is strictly and expressly AT THE CUSTOMERS’S OWN RISK.

2004 BMW 318i Review “The 318i is the smartest pick in the 3 Series line up for private buyers”

W

hat has undoubtedly helped is that BMW are basing more of their 3 Series range around fourcylinder engines. Whereas the 318i (or the 316 if you’re really pushing it) was once left rather stranded at the tail end of BMW’s product line, the fact that the 320i engine is now a four-cylinder, plus the introduction of the 1-Series as the entrylevel BMW, has rehabilitated the image of the four-cylinder 3 Series. Unlike the 170bhp 320i, the 318i has to make do with 143bhp, although this is still a reasonable amount of go. The 190Nm of torque isn’t much down on the 320i and on the road there won’t be much to choose between the two models. Whereas the 320i will make 60mph from rest in 8.2 seconds and accelerate to a top speed of 142mph, the 318i isn’t too far behind, notching a 9.1 second sprint and a terminal velocity of 130mph. The outstanding fuel economy figure of 47.9mpg is a little better than the more powerful car although it’s doubtful if too many decisions are swung by this factor. A CO2 figure of 142g/km is also an impressive showing for a car with this sort of performance. The 318d’s outstanding economy and emissions figures come courtesy of BMW’s EfficientDynamics technology programme. Features including Auto Start-Stop, Brake Energy Regeneration, high precision direct injection, active aero dynamics and optimum gear shift indicators go into EfficentDynamics and the results put BMW products near the top of the tree when it comes to environmental and running costs considerations. Not content with introducing this very accomplished model to their range, BMW gave the 318i an instant headache by introducing a 318d diesel. A little slower (zero to 60 in 9.3 seconds and an identi-

30

cal top speed of 130mph), the 318d aces its petrol rivals with a 60mpg average fuel consumption and emissions rated at just 123g/km. This will make the diesel car the apple of company car buyer’s eyes and comparing the two cars’ torque figures shows that the diesel car is hugely more muscular - 300Nm of torque versus 190Nm. Where the 318i claws back an advantage is in pricing. The 318d is saddled with a price premium not far short of 1.8m which means that for most private buyers, the 318i is by far the smartest pick. The 3 Series is now starting to shift stock in big numbers after a tentative introduction. The 318i model, with its British built engine, is a key weapon in ensuring this ‘E90’ generation 3 Series once again does a number on its rivals from Audi and Mercedes, not to mention Jaguar, Lexus, Saab and Volvo. Developing an all-new 3-Series was never going to be easy and the latest car shows that the money men and the stylists have gone

head to head in the battle between shifting big numbers and continuing the trend for challengingly styled BMWs. It looks like the stylists have blinked first, the 3-Series looking a good deal more conservatively penned than the rest of the BMW line up. Although those wearing the black polo necks may grumble, it’s a wise choice. Unusually for a 3 Series, it could be that what’s on the bonnet gains as much attention as what’s under it where this revised model is concerned. The styling of today’s car has been updated in a number of small ways but the raised lines that fall down the middle of the bonnet are most noticeable. Elsewhere, the BMW trademark ringed side lights are standard and the grille has been tweaked while the entire rear light clusters are now entirely ruby red in colour and the side skirts have a more pronounced crease line. The interior looks largely similar to the previous model but BMW has again updated its iDrive control interface with scrolling menu displays designed to enhance usability. There’s 8 gigabytes of music storage capacity in the

system too, enough for 100 albums, while the quality of the trim materials around the cabin has also been enhanced. The 318i is never going to be the star of the 3 Series line up. Leave the limelight for the M3 and the super-powerful diesel cars. If I had to stake money on which version of the Three was going to contribute the biggest slug of revenue to BMW’s bottom line, I’d certainly plump for the humble 318i every time. Customers won’t be able to help themselves when the temptation of the options list slides across the dealer’s desk. These days they’re going to end up with a very special car indeed.

New Subaru Impreza WRX and STI to Be Standalone Vehicles While Mitsubishi seems determined to make a mess out of the next-generation EVO (this is the company’s alternative to axing the model altogether), Subaru has an opposite pathway for the next WRX and STI models. According to Automotive News, both the WRX and the STI will be turned into standalone models, no longer being hot Impreza models. The strategy has deep implications, as the vehicles are set to receive their custom platform when they come to he marker in 2013. Subaru of America senior VP of Sales told the aforementioned source that this will allows the two cars to leave their traditional drawbacks - the lack of a premium interior and other features- behind and become complete performance cars. As for their tech side, he confirmed an earlier report that indicated the STI will deliver over 300 hp.

Honda CBR 1000RR

T

by correspondent

he 2005 CBR 1000RR was rock solid: Extremely stable if a tad slow-steering, which helped it inspire a lot of confidence in its erstwhile pilots. It was slower on acceleration and heavier to turn, meaning, in short, the Honda got beat where getting beat counts: on the racetrack. Yes, it can be argued it was a better everyman’s bike, but losing anything sits poorly at Honda, and the fix was in: make the 2006 more flickable, harder accelerating and able to carve a tighter line. Sure, this is just a ‘little’ wheelie. Readon to find out why. They accomplished this; I would even go so far as to say that they exceeded the target. But herein is my problem: I just don’t agree with how they got there; the ends don’t, as we all say, justify the

means. This bike no longer shines in the confidence department. True, it’s more fun at the limit, but that reassuring CBR “feel” of being easier to ride and more stable than its competition was the first casualty of the new ride; it’s just not there. And I’ve avoided inking this story, today and every day for the past five weeks: I like Hondas, respect their engineering heritage, love their take-no-prisoners racing history (both two- and four-wheel I might add) and would say Sochiro Honda is one of my top five most-revered motorsport icons. Complicating this, I especially like the people I interact with who have Hondas, and while I’m adept at being MO’s problem-solver, I disdain being its problem creator. Yet, here I am, dissing my second-favorite (behind skylines) marque, and doing so six weeks

late, at that. {Sigh} Well, then, nothing left now but to partake of the nitty gritty of what I liked and didn’t, read on and feel free to disagree. Honda’s recent CBRs developed a reputation as dependable, stable and friendly, perhaps a little boring even. They’ve fared quite well in sportbike shootouts for precisely that reason, allowing even our least experienced testers to gain confidence and feel at home on the racetrack. Honda’s #1 goal was to make the new CBR quicker steering. It only took two turns to discover that they nailed the target. “Honda’s engineers decided to make hundreds of subtle changes for 2006, redesigning fully 60% of the CBR’s components.” However, with an expert at the helm, Honda’s slightly heavier and relatively

slower-steering CBR 1000RR wasn’t quite able to match the outright pace or excitement levels of the other Japanese superbikes. To address this slight performance gap, Honda’s engineers decided to make hundreds of subtle changes for 2006, redesigning fully 60% of the CBR’s components. The huge grey engine covers are magnesium, does that mean Honda is showing off with the reduced fairing coverage? Changes Include: A new magnesium accessory cover, a lighter fairing with redesigned profile to better expose those magnesium covers, new camshaft metallurgy and reduced shaft wall thickness for weight reduction and quicker revving, a lighter exhaust, new lighter weight forks and shock, a lighter and more compact radiator, new smaller ECU (black box) that’s 100grams lighter, a compression ratio increase from 11.9:1 to 12.2:1, dual (nested) valve springs and a revised crankshaft alloy for improved durability, an increased redline from 11,650RPM to 12,200RPM, a 1-tooth larger rear sprocket that improves acceleration but

doesn’t sacrifice top speed, thanks to that higher redline. There’s no question this new CBR is a harder hitting motorcycle. To quicken the steering (and make the ride more exciting), they decreased rake by 1/4°, shortened the trail by 2mm and shortened the swingarm by 5mm, brake rotors were increased to 320mm from 310 but their thickness was reduced to 4.5mm from 5mm. And that’s just the start, there are hundreds more tiny modifications for 2006, but you probably wouldn’t have the time or patience to read them all if Honda published the whole set. The changes netted a whopping (claimed) 17Lb reduction in wet weight -- even though the new bike carries the same fuel load as last year -- and a 3% increase in peak power, without sacrificing low-to-mid range performance. All these changes mean more money, right? Nope, the 2006 CBR 1000RR will cost the same ksh 1.2m almost as the ‘05 model and they’re already available at local sport-bike dealer not boder-boder

dealers. Sounds great, right? Unfortunately, the downside to these changes is a decrease in the bike’s stability with a direct impact on its ease of use for average riders. If you’ll allow me to get a bit selfish here, I’ll write a few words to expose the new CBR’s appeal to guys who can really use all that it has to offer. Uhuru Highway a difficult place to get a 1000 through with any speed on a weekday, as 1000s tend to resist these rapid transitions and line-adjustments. However, aside from a little squirm from the stock Bridgestone BT-015 tires, the CBR flicks through with effortless precision and encourages efforts to squeeze every last tenth out of this road. “If you don’t have the skill you’re most likely to find your brain intimidated and your weaknesses exposed.” Thats common on our highways.. Wards are filling up. You should try and visit the Kenyatta ward for bike accidents then you’ll know what i mean. The bike turns effortlessly through here and demands smooth inputs to

both steering and throttle, lest you find yourself taking a ride over the highside, courtesy of the harder-hitting powerplant and responsive chassis. In other words, it’ll give you exactly what you ask for, but you’d be well-advised to ask for the right thing at the right time. If you have the skill, it’s like riding a scalpel with a hyperspace button.

“The results are often spectacular!” If you are not careful... you’re most likely to find your brain intimidated and your weaknesses exposed. However, it’s still a Honda and like most Hondas, it’ll try to shepherd you through as best

it can, so you’ll probably come out the other side with all your fingers and toes intact. Honda claims the new CBR 1000RR has about 3% more power than the ‘05 model. However, when you couple this power increase with less flywheel effect, a shorter swingarm and a claimed 17Lb(!) weight reduction, it feels like the bike has an extra

20Hp and you’d be hard-pressed to tell the difference between it and the wooly ZX-10R (Kawasaki modified the new ZX-10R’s power delivery to make it more linear and manageable, but this CBR feels more like the old ZX-10R). To put it simply, it feels fast and it is fast. However, those wheelies and wobbles are merely window dressing, because the new CBR doesn’t actually shake its head or do anything you wouldn’t want it to do in a straight line, it just lets you know you’re hauling ass.

Sharing DNA with Honda’s MotoGP-winning RC211V, the awesome CBR1000RR elevates its Superbike status to new performance levels in 2006 thanks to extensive changes that sharpen handling, boost horsepower and reduce weight.

FAST FIVE CARS

W

hilst most feature films tend to fall under a particular genre, say comedy, romantic comedy, drama, action, horror, whatever, some are made simply to quell an underlying thirst, the thirst of an obsessive, a buff, an enthusiast, a fan, a fanatic even. Some films are for dance-a-holics, some for geeks, others are for budding detectives, but long unsatisfied has been the petrolhead: many movies made for the serious motoring enthusiast have been no different from pornography- plenty to see but little in the way of plot development. Some have even made no sense whatsoever (remember Vanishing Point, anyone?), relying on the blatant disregard for the laws of physics to titillate the viewer. I am afraid to say the latest theatre offering is not much different from previous fare. Let the curtains rise on Fast Five, the most recent car movie of note. This is the fifth (and latest) installation in the Fast and the Furious series of movies, following The Fast and the Furious, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Tokyo Drift and Fast and Furious, in that order. These films are loosely based on illegal street racing, with Tokyo Drift being the exception, focusing mainly on Japan’s favorite motorsports: drifting and Touge, which is a one-on-one nose-to-tail bumper-to-bumper pursuit down a winding mountain road, preferably into a canyon (touge races are sometimes called canyon races). The gist of these films has been a policeman, rogue or otherwise, inducting himself into the outlawed world of illegal underground racing to try and bust open a ring of criminals, and more often than not driving skill is more important than policing power for success to be realized (again Tokyo Drift is the odd one out here: a wayward child is sent to Japan when an impromptu after-school race over a girl ends up in an orgy of bent metal and a written off Viper sports car. In Japan he has to drift for his life, quite literally). Now, I am not going to give a synopsis of the whole movie here, that would take a lot of space, and I would be infringing on somebody else’s line of work, so we are just going to look at the cars featured and the notable scenes.

BIKE REVIEW

1. A black Acura (Honda) NSX, possibly a late model Type S judging from the headlamps (2005?), driven by a woman, and helped along by some American muscle: an equally black supercharged 1970 Dodge Charger (would you look at the size of the bonnet mounted induction scoop) and.., and the fiction begins right away. The NSX performs a perfect 180-degree turn ahead of the pack (quite possible), heads back towards the bus, and the Dodge, which has been trailing the NSX, brakes really hard, causing the bus to ram into it and…. pause for the impossible… the bus flips over.

2. Two of the escape masterminds are driving a RHD car (in Brazil cars are LHD), another black one which looks suspiciously like an early model GT-R Nissan judging from the circular tail-lights, maybe the 2000 GT-R from 1972. It is clearly an import, probably from Japan, complete with fender-mounted side-mirrors.

3. The train scene. Here, a form of desert rat lorry-pickup combo sporting what sounds like a massive petrol engine. Huge, knobbly tyres and clearly visible trick suspension reveal that this vehicle is a mean off-roader, a fact which is driven home when you see the speed with which it flies over the rough surface of Brazil’s wilderness, bouncing several feet into the air and onto its nose over steep crests. Its purpose? To ease the theft of three exotics off a train by acting as a mobile ramp: a royal blue Ford GT (debuted in 2004 to a limited production run), complete with white racing stripes, a black DeTomaso Pantera GTS (Italian) and a grey convertible Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. Cue some crazy activity getting the cars off the train and some powersliding action as they are driven off into the dry nothingness, before the whole setup is interrupted by infighting (there was a welding torch involved somewhere in the brawl. Oouch!) and the FBI who were transporting the cars. The melee and ensuing chaos sees the Corvette trashed as it falls right inside a gorge and into a river.

4. The baddies in most movies tend to move around in expensive German limousines, but not the fellow in Fast Five). Yes, he keeps it Teutonic, but his choice of wheels is, of all things, a pair of Volkswagen Touaregs, and its not even the new one. And they are both grey. How unlikely.

5. A major cameo appearance is made by the Knight XV, a gigantic Canadian pseudo-military transport solution that out-Hummers the Hummer H1 in sheer Hummer-ness and is reputed by its builders to have the ability of sustaining incessant gunfire for 24 hours (that particular tit-bit is not from the movie, it is an actual claim). It is ridden in by Dwayne Johnson, no less. For those who are not good with names, Dwayne Johnson is the former WWE wrestler popularly known as The Rock.

6. When Torreto and friend go in search of an “agile” car for phase two of their ambitious heist, the first car spotted at the racing scene is a black Nissan Skyline R33 GT-R (1995). The two cars that race past just before are hard to tell, but one looks like another Nissan, the 350Z in metallic grey. Another 350Z, blue this time, can also be seen, but only from the front, as can a 911 Porsche (later revealed to be a GT3RS, model 996 with silver BBS rims), but only from the side. The leading edge of a Mk IV Toyota Supra is visible briefly before the 1970 Dodge Charger heaves into view. All this is amid shots of provocatively dressed women, so when watching the movie, if it is cars you want to spot, your concentration will be put to the test at this point.

7. In a contest that is not shown, the two heist-meisters race their Dodge against the 911 “for pinks”, i.e. the loser forfeits his car to the winner. Either the racers in Brazil have no driving skill whatsoever or the Dodge had a jet engine, but the end result is that Torreto and Co. get themselves the “agile” car they were seeking, the blue GT3. It fails to prove its agility, however, so they seek other faster cars, one of which looked like a RHD tuned Supra. The other is a grey AE Performance Nissan 370Z in LHD. None of them manage to pass the test, which was to negotiate a hard right corner and a hairpin, all the while keeping ahead of a set of surveillance cameras. The trials continue with a Subaru Impreza STi (2010) before a brainwave from Han has them stealing police vehicles. Next month: the infamous chase sequence from Fast Five. The participants, the lies, and the little details you probably missed.

Here’s where the story splits: worldwide, we’ll receive the Premium Black edition and the Egoist edition, while righthand drive markets will also receive a Track Edition, with goodies such as carbon fiber body parts. The 2013 Nissan GT-R is expected to take on the Nurburgring next month. Since the new (991) Porsche 911 Carerra S is now as fast out there as the outgoing GT3, beating its previous generation corespondent’s time by 13 seconds, we expect the upcoming 911 Turbo to be a true beast, which means that we’ll be in for quite a fight.

Well, it seems that we might be in for quite a joyride with the future 2013 MY GT-R (2012 MY for the European spec). According to NAGTROC forums, Nissan has held a media presentation at the Nurburgring (where the company expects to humiliate the upcoming 911 Turbo), using the occasion to unveil an

explosion of good news about the future GT-R. First of all, the 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 unit will be upped to 570 hp, a 40 hp increase over the current model (that’s 90 more hp than the car originally had when it was launched), with the extra muscle coming thanks to intake and exhaust mods, as well as a new ECU. Since we are talking about a computer-car, the suspension and transmission software will also be tweaked. Since the GT-R was always about managing power, the car will stay true to its spirit, thus also set to receive new aerodynamics, which will offer benefits such has enhance cooling. The report

U VW Amarok Gets 8-Speed Automatic Gearbox

T

he 2012 Model Year brings certain changes for the VW Amarok, with the most important one being an eight-speed automatic transmission, which is a classfirst feature. The extra gears allow a broader gear ratio spread between the 1st and the 8th compared to a conventional auto tranny. This brings multiple benefits, increasing efficiency and towing capacity, as well as reducing NVH levels. “Thanks to this greater spread the TDI engine works even more effectively in every rev range, and it is more fuel-efficient and agile. Moreover, 8th gear was configured as a fuel-saving overdrive gear that operates at reduced engine speed. The first gear is configured for pulling away in offroad use or when towing. Like the manual version, the Amarok with automatic transmission and permanent 4-wheel drive is thus also highly capable in all-terrain use without any need for additional reduction gearing,” a VW statement explains. The fuel efficiency is increased even further, as the new gearbox is combines with BlueMotion Technology that includes battery regeneration and low rolling resistance tires. The transmission is offered with the 120 hp 2.0-liter TDI, the 160 hp TDI engine, with the Amarok returning 7.6 liters per 100 km (31 mpg) and emitting 199 grams of CO2 per km, as well as with the 180 hp incarnation of the engine, which now achieves its top speed of 179 km/h in seventh gear. The refreshed Amarok is scheduled to hit European showrooms in January next year. November 2011

For those who don’t want to spend $150,000 (apxt ksh 1.2mil) on the 6 and 1/2 ft (1.8m) tall Private Bar, there’s always The Chiller, a brushed titanium and blue leather recipient for the same drink. Need a cold drink? No problem, the top can be used as an ice bucket. This can be yours for $375 (apxt ksh 35k), but if you are willing to go just a bit upmarket you can choose The Cube, a similar but more complex case, which hides an indivisually-numbered Blue Label botle, crystall glasses and a set of stainless steel tongs, all for $770. and hope. To help us dream a little bit easier, Andreas Fougner of Bull Finch Visuals has done a great job of creating the Supra for the modern age. It’s obvious that he used the lines of the FT-86 concepts as a base, but the end result is more than the sum of its parts. We have new creases, folds and gapes everywhere, and the overall shape somewhat resembles the Audi R8. G Power Unveils M3 Tornado RS with 720 HP

e know that German tuners G Power know a thing or two about taking a regular M3 and turning into a monster that eats Porsche for breakfast and has room left of supercar desert. Their biggest M3 achievement to date was the 635 horsepower BMW M3 GTS, but even that pales in comparison with the Tornado RS kit for the same car. To put things bluntly, your vanilla M3 can now be turned into something that has more power than the Aventador, the 458 Italia or the SLS. The M3 has been fitted with the G Power SK III “Sporty Drive” Supercharger System, a modified crankshaft that increases the stroke, which in turn takes the V8 from 4.0-liters to a full 4.6-liters, a carbon fiber airbox which is 4 Kg lighter than the standard one and a custom cooling system to cope with the monumental power. The end result: 720 horsepower going to the back wheels... scary but fun. As a result, the G Power M3 Tornado RS will hit 100 km/h in just 3.7 sec-

44

onds and can zoom to 200 km/h in 9.7 seconds. Top speed - you don’t want to know! What, you do? OK, it’s 330 km/h or 205 mph if you like imperial. As for the body of the car, this is just as aggressive as before, with a series of aero bits being added. The list of other mods is completed by a set of black 20inch wheels wrapped in Michelin Super Sport tires, a high performance braking system with 6- and 4-piston callipers plus 396/380mm rotors and a coilover suspension. You can’t put a price on perfection, but the supercharged system alone costs €35,000 (aprxt 5mil ksh) not including tax and destination or fitting. For that kind of money you can get a whole other M3 from the used car section of your paper, but it won’t scare supercars like this does.

ultiple Moto GP World Champion Valentino Rossi has always had the most original helmets, and Italian helmet manufacturer AGV has just launched the GP Tech Rossi ELEMENTS Helmet that is in line with The Doctor’s favorite graphics, and is priced at £499.99. The “ELEMENTS” features the famous sun and moon design that has been the theme of all of Valentino’s primary helmets, the classical elements (Earth, Fire, Water and Air) are represented in the rays of the sun and give the graphic its name. The rear of the helmet features Valentino’s trademark 46 over the moon that is partly made of the colors of the Italian flag. Taking the best from the previous road race helmets (Ti-tech, GP-Pro) and from the AGV racetrack experience, GP-Tech matches lightness, ventilation and comfort with an extremely innovative and aerodynamic design. Valentino Rossi is probably the most loved rider on the Moto GP racing grid. Establishing record after record, perfecting his times with every lap and proving that he can win even with a disadvantage, Rossi has and will be an inspiration for past and future generations to come. “Since Valentino started to use the GP TECH in 2008 his primary graphic was the five continents. During the 3 seasons of ’08 ’09 and ’10, Valentino wore a number of special graphics but the five continents was always one of Valentino’s favourites and alongside the legendary VR46 the five continents was the only primary graphic to be worn unchanged for 3 seasons,” AGV stressed out. Performance THE BUILD ISSUE

STRIPPING YOUR CAR DOWN TO BARE METAL THIS MONTH: Subaru WRX STi Street legal cars that rule Kenyan roads November 2011

45

Performance

S

ubaru discovered performance long before the WRX finally made its way to these shores in 2001. After a brief and unsuccessful foray into Formula One in the late 1980s, using (appropriately for Subaru) a horizontally-opposed 12-cylinder Motori Moderni engine, Subaru found its true performance niche in rallying starting in 1989. Legacys were used at first, but when the Impreza was introduced it became the basis for Subaru’s World Rally Championship (WRC) cars. WRC rules require that the competition cars be based on a production model, and so the WRX was born. The first WRX used a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with 237 horsepower, somewhat more than the 110 or so horses found under the normal Impreza hood of the day. Further development by Subaru’s ``Subaru Technica International’’ (STi) performance division led to ever more power, eventually 276 bhp. When the Impreza was redesigned for the 2002 model year, a WRX was part of the lineup, and it was immensely popular. With 227 horsepower, it corresponded to the regular model of the previous generation. I recently had the opportunity to spend a long day with an STi, followed by a regular WRX. (Other than styling, the WRX is little changed for `04.) Unfair comparison? Well, the STi is a tough act to follow. Think chili peppers - the Impreza 2.5 RS is an Anaheim, mild but interesting. The WRX is a pilipili - plenty hot for most people. The STi is a habanero - blazing 11-on-a-scale-of-10 pure heat for the totally hardcore. The WRX still offers a great suite of performance and practicality features. The STi just builds on them. How hot do you like your Nyama? APPEARANCE: The WRX STi lends its functional, rally- inspired looks to all of the other sedans and wagons in the Impreza lineup. The basic shape is little changed, a compact car with notable fender blisters. But the front is more rounded, with 46

a reshaped grille and fascia for lower aerodynamic drag. That, and triangular headlights with a rounded inboard end, give all new Imprezas more character. The functional ram-air scoop in the hood of the regular WRX is large, but the STi feeds its appetite with an even larger one. COMFORT: Welcome to the racer’s office, almost. This STi’s interior is designed for serious driving, without distractions. Floor mats and the audio system are deleted. This saves weight...and the many and varied mechanical noises from the engine and drivetrain are more interesting than the radio anyway. (Dnt you just love how a subaru sounds? why listen to a radio?)Although the instrument panel is the same as that of the plain WRX in style, the instruments are unique, with red LED indicator needles. An STi steering wheel and shift knob are special, too. Comfort is not forgotten. The well-bolstered sport seats look great, with blue ``ecsaine’’ artificial suede center sections. They also are extremely comfortable, and provide support in hard driving. As in other Imprezas, the rear seat will hold two or three people, and the trunk is functionally large. Near-supercar performance meets everyday function...must be a Subaru. SAFETY: Subaru’s rigid ``Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frame’’ not only works as a safety cage around the passenger compartment, it ensures a rigid chassis structure. The WRX STi has all of the safety equipment expected and required today, and also competition- caliber handling and braking abilities. ROADABILITY: The STi takes advantage of its rigid chassis structure with a four-wheel independent strut-type suspension that is similar in design to those of the Impreza and WRX, but it uses more rigid inverted struts for better control in serious driving and aluminum front control arms for less unsprung weight. It is calibrated a little stiffer than the normal WRX, but that

suits its mission in life perfectly. Quicker steering helps when playing hard, and extra-large vented brake rotors with Brembo calipers (4-piston at the front, 2-piston at the rear) ensure competitionspec stopping ability. Power is of no use if it doesn’t get to the ground, and this STi’s ``Driver Control Center Differential’’ (DCCD) all-wheel drive system is the most performance-oriented AWD Subaru has ever offered. In automatic mode - the best choice for most situations - it varies the front/rear power split very quickly for optimum traction and cornering behavior. Manual over-ride is possible, but is best used by expert drivers in specialized conditions. (How do you say ``homologation special for SCCA Pro Rallying?’’) Both front and rear differentials are limited-slip, to better handle side-to-side traction differences. PERFORMANCE: This STi feels like a regular WRX, only more so. Not surprising, considering that the power difference between the WRX and the STi is about that between the 2.5 RS and the WRX. In normal driving, under 4500 rpm or so and with light throttle, the STi doesn’t feel all that powerful. It’s healthy, to be sure, but it can easily be driven in traffic like any other Subaru. It’s not high-strung at all. But the first time you really get your right foot in it, there is absolutely no doubt that there really is over 300 horsepower at the other end of the electronic throttle linkage. Acceleration happens, and quickly. Variable valve timing and a high-boost intercooled turbo help the STi’s 2.5-liter boxer four make 300 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 300 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm, while internal strengthening keeps it healthy and, remarkably, quieter than the regular WRX engine in some ways. A six-speed manual gearbox is the only transmission. CONCLUSIONS: A Subaru that can keep up with the quickest cars made? Yes, indeed. It’s called the WRX STi. Now a look at the Spec sheet.. The Subaru Impreza drivers become the first-ever set of competitors from Madagascar to win a round of FIA-sanctioned series in the African Continent since making their debut in the competition at the beginning of last season. “I am over excited and very happy to win my first-ever ARC rally. Rally was good and our car was also good with no major mechanical problem. But it was scary at times to find motor bikes on the roads at speeds of 190kph,’’ said Ranaivomamianini. His victory in one of the most famous rounds of the ARC series overshadowed the anticipated battle between Zimbabwe’s Jamie Whyte and his compatriot Conrad Rautenbach, whose interest in the chase for ARC title was the focal point of the competition. Despite finishing fourth overall in at the wheels of a hired-Subaru Impreza N16, Rautenbach still maintains the lead of the overall standings of the FIA-sanctioned series with Rwanda and Madagascar yet to host their events. “Constant overheating problems which were caused by the influx of sand that was finding its way into the radiator was a major cause of us slowing down. Mechanics changed the radiator on three different occasions, but we were never able to stop the sand from being scooped from underneath the engine due to the shape of the car,’’ said Rautenbach. Whyte’s second overall place in Dares-salaam has helped him clip six points 50

off Rautencbach’s tally at the top of the table. He is out to register a hat-trick of championship-winning streak following his wins in 2009 and 2010. “Being the first car on the road did not help us on the second day. It was just crazy and at times extremely dangerous to find big trucks on either sides of the road at those high speeds. Amazingly we were still able to set superior stage times to finish second overall,’’ said Archenoul. The Subaru Impreza of Mohamed Essa of Zambia cruised to third place in his probably last ARC rally this year. “I am very happy with the third place. This is the end of my contest for the 2011 ARC series but may look at South Africa for one off events. The Zambian championship is still very young and has no strong opposition,’’ said Mohammed Rwanda’s Valery Bukera scored his best result in Tanzania by taking up the fifth place in the rally filled with Subaru models. “I am excited and now looking forward to our rally in Rwanda next. The car behaved well,’’ said Bukera. Patrice Comtois and Carl Voltaire were the bestplaced home drivers following their fifthplace finish at the wheel of yet another Subaru Impreza. The only brother and sister crew of Zambia’s Jassy Singh and Jasmeen Singh were forced out on the final day with transmission failure. Aged 18, Jassy and Jasmeen are children of former African Champion, Muna Singh. They were considered to be among the youngest crews to be participating in the Kobil Rally of Tanzania. “We had all the troubles today with our car. First we broke the rear shock in the first stage before we broke both the arm

and bolt joints in the later stage.’’ Asked how his sister would be of help in such cases, with a cheeky smile on his face, Jassy said “it is always a handicap but I am sure she is will be able to carry out a tyre or jack up the car.” The Nissan 206Z of Jayant Shah and Ravi Chana was the best-placed twowheel-drive machine in the 11th place out of the 14 finishers. Vettel on pole for inaugural Indian race

L

ewis Hamilton’s three-place grid penalty came back to haunt him in qualifying for the Indian Grand Prix. The 2008 champion was right on Sebastian Vettel’s tail after their first runs in Q3, the German lapping in 1m 24.437s in the Red Bull, the Englishman 1m 24.474s in the McLaren. But while there was no point in the latter pushing harder on a second run, as Mark Webber was not going to improve his own third fastest 1m 24.508s, Vettel went out again and trimmed down to 1m 24.178s to secure his 13th pole position of the year. Behind the top three, Fernando Alonso had to be content with fourth place on 1m 24.519s, while McLaren’s Jenson Button was in the process of pushing Felipe Massa down a place with 1m 24.950s at the very moment when the Brazilian was spearing off the track as his Ferrari’s right-front suspension broke after he had clobbered a kerb. He had to rely on 1m 25.122s for his sixth place. Nico Rosberg was seventh for Mercedes on 1m 25.451s, as Force India’s Adrian Sutil, Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari took the remaining top-10 places but didn’t set times. Vettel had shredded the weekend’s fastest time with 1m 24.657s in Q2, with Hamilton next up on 1m 25.019s and Alonso on 1m 25.158s. 52

Renault caught a tough break when Vitaly Petrov actually lapped in 1m 26.319s, the same time as Jaime Alguersuari had done for Toro Rosso, but the Spaniard did it first which meant that the Russian did not make it through to Q3. Behind him was Michael Schumacher, suffering vibrations on his Mercedes as he lapped in 1m 26.337s, then came a disappointed Paul di Resta who’d been ahead of Force India team mate Sutil until their final runs when he failed to improve on 1m 26.503s which left him 13th as the German took P8. Pastor Maldonado was 14th for Williams with 1m 26.537s, ahead of Renault’s Bruno Senna on 1m 26.651s, Rubens Barrichello in the other Williams on 1m 27.247s and Sauber’s Sergio Perez on 1m 27.562s. The big talk of Q1 was whether McLaren’s Jenson Button might miss out as he was struggling for grip and down in

16th place until the very last lap when he jumped up to third behind surprise fastest man Petrov and Vettel. Kamui Kobayashi had looked good for a while but never got things together and his 1m 27.876s made him the first faller in 18th place. Heikki Kovalainen took charge at Lotus to take 19th from Jarno Trulli, 1m 28.565s to 1m 28.752s. Then came the HRTs, as Daniel Ricciardo just kept ahead of local hero Narain Karthikeyan who continued to do an excellent job. The Australian lapped in 1m 30.216s, the Indian 1m 30.238s. Behind them, Jerome D’Ambrosio was 23rd for Virgin on 1m 30.866s as team mate Timo Glock could not better 1m 34.046s after mechanical trouble. That left him outside the 107 percent time of 1m 32.222s, so he will be allowed to race at the stewards’ discretion. There are grid place drops to consider, however. Hamilton and Perez drop three apiece, Petrov, Ricciardo and Karthikeyan five, the Russian for his indiscretion in Korea, the Australian for a gearbox change and the Indian for blocking Schumacher during Q1. Thus the starting order will be: Vettel, Webber; Alonso, Button; Hamilton, Massa; Rosberg, Sutil; Buemi, Alguersuari; Schumacher, di Resta; Maldonado, Senna; Barrichello, Petrov; Kobayashi, Kovalainen; Trulli, Perez; D’Ambrosio, Ricciardo; Karthikeyan, Glock.

Onakar Rai wins MMC Rally in Mariakani

N

airobi based Onkar Rai claimed his maiden career win as Mombasa Motor Club (MMC) Rally ended in dramatic fashion at Mariakani’s Mnyenzeni Primary School. Onkar, nephew to two times Kenya Champion Sarbi Rai, fought from behind twice to pull through by a 41seconds margin from reigning series Champion Naushad Kara Lota. Onkar had his campaign effectively sewn up when Naushad’s Lota Motorsports Subaru N12 slammed into a heard of cows twice losing 50seconds just 10 kilometers into CS4’s reverse run. Naushad’s navigator Adnan Din looked was left to rue their mishap at the service park situated 7km from Mariakani town. “I knew the mishap would cost us the rally. We started off first on the road going into the second loop because we were leading. And 10 kilometers into CS4 we encountered a heard of cows over a brow; hit one on the left and another 5kilometers ahead on the right. We didn’t stop but lost time,” said Adnan. Onkar swung into the attacking mood following a quick analysis of Naushad’s section times at first service. “We knew he was going to attack all the way so we were leaving nothing to chance,” said Onkar. Onkar’s elder brother Tejvir Rai was the earlier pace setter on CS1 when he opened an 11seconds lead on CS1 from the former. But this was short lived when Coast Champion Naushad bounced back with an 11 seconds lead from Onkar at CS2 end. From then on it was a two horse race pitting the Subaru N12 cars of Onkar and Naushad. Onkar was all smiles. His calm and assured march to service after the reverse run of the 17km (CS5) stage bellied the 54

excitement that was bubbling underneath, but in a solid stream of joy it exploded when he joined his service crew at the MnyenzeniPrimary School finish. This was Onkar’s second participation at the Coast Rally; first round being the event in ran Ramisi in May when fuel pump gremlins cost him the Rally. On the navigator’s seat, Onkar had to also adjust accordingly when he called upon Bharat Pattni to fill the void left behind by Baldev Chager. “Its really amazing. Bharat was on top of the game and I had absolutely no problems sitting with him. The bond was instant and really convenient,” said Onkar . Sudesh Hirani better known as Hakuuz sealed the podium dash in his first outing with the ex-Raaji Bharij N10 Subaru. Fourth was Tejvir Rai and Bharat Pattni in their Subaru gc8 while Paras came home fifth. The event featured smooth and flatout gravel sections around Mariakani and Bamba areas. Out of the 13 starters only nine survived the 104’KM competitive run. There were two newcomers in Jan Mohammed from Kilifi and Paras Pandya’s brother Kamlesh. Babu Motors’ Jitendra Davda (Toyota Marino) retired on CS2 while Farhaan Khan (Subaru) suffered similar gremlins on CS4. Jan Mohamed and his sister Farzin Janmohammed retired as well with turbo failure in their Subaru gc8 while Anish Chouhan and his Cousin Kailesh Chouhan also retired with electrical problems on the last stage.

KCB GURU NANAK A Success For Samira

T

he Rally Queens moved a step closer to their goal of tackling the gruelling East African Safari Classic when Samira Khan and Anita Irwin completed the high speed Guru Nanak Rally over the weekend. Despite running on safety notes rather than pace notes the pair still placed their Escort well inside the top thirty at the finish of the 300 kilometre long rally. Samira and Anita were using the Guru Nanak Rally, Round 7 of the Kenyan National Rally Championship, as a dry run ahead of the Classic Safari and thus opted to not do the recce and rather tackle the stages blind. This proved beneficial as it gave Samira an insight into what to expect on the forthcoming ten day marathon. Issues with a rear shock absorber during the day were also identified and the MMsport team can now make adjustments to ensure that the car runs

reliably during the East African Classic Safari Rally. Samira; we are really pleased to have finished the Guru Nanak Rally. It was a very fast event and was using roads similar to what we will experience on the Classic. We had a few moments as both Anita and I adjusted to the notes but we learnt a lot during the day and it was plenty of fun! Now I return to the task of raising the rest of the sponsorship we require. Samira and Anita now have less than a month before they travel to Mombasa for the start of the East African Safari Classic. This ten day marathon will take the crews from Mombasa through Amboseli and into Tanzania. The route then returns to Kenya and heads into the Rift Valley and up to Lake Baringo before heading back down to the Coast for the ceremonial finish.

Petrov penalised after collision Renault’s Vitaly Petrov has been handed a five-place grid penalty for the Indian Grand Prix after he was adjudged to have caused the lap 16 collision with Michael Schumacher that caused the both drivers to retire from today’s Korean GP.

chumacher was rounding turn three when Petrov flew through the apex, slamming into the rear of the German’s Mercedes and tearing off Schumacher’s rear wing. Both were forced to retire from the race. “I didn’t see Vitaly coming,” said Schumacher. “I was just suddenly spun into a direction I had not intended to go, and then I saw my rear wing hanging off. It was unfortunate but these things happen when you fight hard – that’s racing. “It’s another unfortunate end to a race which could have been encouraging today,” he added. “It’s a big pity as the car was again very good in race trim and I had already gained some positions. It would have been interesting to

see what was possible, and I think we could certainly have taken some points.” Petrov will now have to start the Indian GP five places lower than whatever grid slot he achieves in qualifying but tool full blame for the incident in Korea and apologised to Schumacher. “I tried to defend my position from Fernando [Alonso] but I was in the braking zone on the dirty side of the track, which meant I locked my wheels and hit Michael,” said the Russian. “I apologise to Michael, it was not his fault, it was absolutely my fault. Once my wheels were locked there was nothing I could do about it.”

KQ EAST AFRICA SAFARI CLASSIC RALLY

E

ntries for the 2011 Kenya Airways East African Safari Classic Rally closed with a confirmed entry of 52 cars. Last minute entrants to beat the deadline were Asad Anwar and Elodie Sampere in a Datsun 260Z and Quentin Savage and Russel Savage in a Datsun 180B. The organizers are now preparing the final starting order which was announced at a press conference at the New Stanley Hotel on Wednesday 26th October 2011. With barely one months to spare, both International and Kenyan rally teams are going through the final preparation phase for November’s Kenya Airways East African Classic Safari Rally 2011 with all the cars from Europe now shipped and on the high seas to Mombasa, Kenya where this epic motor rally will start on 19th November 2011. Weather conditions are threatening to recreate the wet race of 1977, according to Event’s Director Surinder Thatthi. During final route survey, almost all the sections

November 2011

have been reported to be very wet and muddy. “Hopefully the rains will finish by the start of the event and if not this could go down as the wettest Classic Safari ever. With the cars on either front or rear wheel traction, the Safari could be a real test for man and machine if the current rains persist,” said Surinder. The Kenya Airways East African Safari Rally is awash with legendary names, 1979 World Rally Champion and four-time winner of the Safari Rally Bjorn Waldegard topping the entry list in a Porsche 911. The other is 1984 FIA World champion Stig Blomqvist in a Ford Escort with Venezuelan Ana Goni in the navigator’s seat.In a repeat of history, Waldergard, a former world champion and a true legend among peers, is looking forward towards the Safari with the same temperament like in 1977 when it was thoroughly wet. But he went on to conquer the marathon, consolidating his lead through the thoroughly wet Kerio/Cherangani Hills sections when he gradually ran away from his distant cousin Rauno Aaltonen, one of the original Flying Finns who was driving a Datsun 160J.

The Germans are coming ! BY SAMSON ATEKA

T

hree of the German crews that are entered on the Kenya Airways East African Safari Classic Rally got together for a combined test session. The test took place in an open cast mine called Profen near Leipzig that is commonly used by rally raid teams to prepare their cars for the Dakar and similar events. The area offers everything from sand to water splashes, gravel, rocks as well as dips and bumps. The three drivers – Franz Wunderlich, Gunther Kronseder and Josef Jobst – all come from Walter Röhrl’s home town of Regensburg and, by further coincidence, they are all driving cars manufactured in

58

Stuttgart. Wunderlich will drive a Tuthill prepared Porsche 911 with Klaus-Peter Kristek, Kronseder a Mercedes 450 SLC with Gerd Petzold, and Jobst an Autosport Kotek prepared Porsche 911 with Hans Griefenstein. In fact this Kotek prepared car is the same 911 with which Björn Waldegård finished second overall on the last EASC in 2009. It is one of team of three 911s prepared and run by Jiri Kotek with the help of Jürgen Bertl. Kronseder also owns an original exOpel Euro Händler Team Manta 400 that he drove recently at the Eifel Rallye Festival. Franz Wunderlich is a relative newcomer to the sport and only got involved in rallying in the last few years. He bought a Porsche Targa and first drove it in regularity events on tarmac roads. His

first proper rally was a tarmac rally in Majorca. This test session was in fact the first time that he had driven in anger on gravel and thus, like several drivers before him, the Safari Classic will be his first major rally. Quote from Wunderlich: “The test near Leipzig was my first real experience on gravel and I really enjoyed it. Although we got stuck once, I think that driving on loose surfaces is better than everything I have ever done before. The movement of the car is much more gentle and going sideways is just so easy. Our Tuthill Porsche ran pretty well during the test, we just have small things to improve like the windscreen wipers that did not quite do their job properly. We will probably do another two-day test with Tuthill in Wales before the Safari Classic to get more experience with the car on gravel.”

Porsche or Escort ?

I

t looks very much as if the first eleven months of 2011 will be the last time that anyone can say ‘a Porsche has never won the Safari Rally’. The line-up from the famous Stuttgart marque for the Kenya Airways East African Safari Classic Rally is simply amazing – and continues to grow with every passing day. If we talk solely about confirmed entries, there are already exactly half of the thirty-four entries entered in Porsche 911s, a veritable Kriegsflotte von Stuttgart to overwhelm the Ford Escorts and Datsuns that have so far dominated the Safari Classic as well as the old East African Safari of the 1970s. In those days, a victory was so often nearly in the hands of a Porsche with drivers like Edgar Herrmann, Sobieslaw Zazada and most memorably, Björn Waldegård, frequently leading but never quite taking the top step on the podium. Zazada was sixth in 1969, fifth in 1971 and second in 1972, Waldegård second in 1974 and Vic Preston Junior second in 1978 but in those and the intervening years it was rare that a Porsche had not been at the front at sometime during the event. It has been a similar story since the bi-annual Safari Classic started running in 2003. Frédéric Dor’s 911 was second ahead of Stuart Rolt’s similar car while Dor went on to finish third in 2005 and

60

second again in 2007. Indeed in 2007, second, third, fourth and fifth places were filled by Porsche 911s. Then in 2009, Björn Waldegård, the winner from the previous year when he was in a Ford Escort, brought a 911 home in second place with Gérard Marcy fourth in another 911. The Porsche entry this year looks set to write the epilogue to this story. Two formidable teams, Kronos Vintage and Tuthill Porsche, have between them already entered twelve cars and they have plenty of experience to call on both on the preparation side and from the crews. Kronos have Gregoire de Mevius, winner for them on the 2010 Rallye du Maroc as well as Kronos MD, Jean-Pierre Mondron, and Thierry de Latrie du Bosqueau who both finished the 2009 Safari Classic in Kronos 911s. They are joined by a very famous name, that of Claude RuizPicasso, the only surviving son of Pablo Picasso who has devoted much of his life to administering his father’s estate but whose hobby is very much concerned with cars and motor sport. For the Tuthill team, they are entering Thomas Flohr who astounded the pundits by finishing fifth in 2009 on his first attempt at a Safari and also Aslam Khan who has Safari experience going back to the end of the 1970s. Steve Troman is back with them and hoping to im-

prove on his seventh place in 2009 and is joined in the line-up by Richard Jackson and Stephen Funk. It is hard to say from where the main opposition to the Stuttgart invaders might come but it will probably be from the Ford Escorts. And the most likely of these will be coming from Viking Motorsport, the Escort preparation company run by ex-WRC champion co-driver, Phil Mills. As yet, Viking have only two of their Escort Mk2 RS1800’s entered and the lead car is being driven by John Lloyd who had done most of the Safari Classics in Porsche and Escorts, claiming fourth overall in 2005 in a Porsche 911. The second car is still to have its crew identified and the organisers have been told that they should ‘watch this space’ for someone who will not disappoint. With entries still coming in thick and fast, this whole Escort v Porsche situation may change considerably in the coming months. It is worth noting that both Tuthill and Kronos, like Viking, still have one ‘to be announced’ in the already registered entries. Speculation abounds as to whom these cars will finally be allotted but all that can be said for the moment is that there are quite a few past Safari winners out there who could be interested in competing. We can only wait and see.

KCB ADVANTAGE BANKING RALLY ROUND 6 RESULTS BY SAMSON ATEKA

T

he race to decide this year’s national rally championship (NRC) title between leader Susan ‘Super Lady’ Muwonge and Ponsiano Lwakataka has shifted to the tightest of situations after the latter failed to pick any points in the recent Tanzania Rally, writes Moses Mugalu Lwakataka’s unfortunate exit (his Subaru N8’s engine knocked) not only set the tone for the Independence Rally (October 8-9) as the final NRC event of the season, but has also sent the two title contenders into complicated scenarios. Going into this penultimate round, Muwonge remains on course to become the country’s first woman rally champion; she leads the title race with 365 points, 25 ahead of Lwakataka. However, because rallying is unpredictable, there are possibilities of a dramatic end that depend on the two drivers’ results in the Independence Rally. To succeed in his chase for a third NRC career title, Lwakataka must win the Independence Rally, and pray that Muwonge doesn’t come up second. If Lwakataka wins the rally (taking his points tally 440), and the ‘Super Lady’finishes second, they will tie and for the first time Uganda’s rally champion could be de-

November 2011

cided in the boardroom. According to rules by Federation of Motorsports Clubs of Uganda (FMU), there are two options. The first option provides for the winner of the first event of the season to be declared champion. And, in this case, Muwonge, who won the season opening Mbarara Rally could easily snatch the title. The second option states that the best winner (one who has won more events in the season) be declared the champion. And that’s where Lwakataka, with three victories (SMC Challenge Rally, Pearl of Africa Rally and EMC Rally) under his belt, stands the chance. But in this tie-breaker scenario, everything will be at the discretion of FMU executives to pick on which of the two clauses to evoke. Sources within the rally administrative gurus say the majority of officials widely favour a historic crowning of a female champion. However, under all these circumstance, Lwakataka insists he’s not under any pressure. Instead, he argues that the ‘grand finale’ situation will prompt the best out of him. “I’m used to driving under pressure and I enjoy winning in such scenarios,” he said on Friday. Meanwhile, Lwakataka’s main rival, the former champion, Ronald Ssebuguzi, has backtracked on

his earlier decision not to compete again this season. Ssebuguzi, who rolled his Mitshibushi Evo 9 in July during the Pearl of Africa Rally, has decided to recce in the Independence Rally. This, however, is not good news for Lwakataka who badly needs victory in the event where his nemesis will be a distraction. The two-day event, organized by Motorsport Promotion Uganda (MPU), starts with a special stage at Festino Double Track circuit on October 8. 17. Samira Khan / Raju Chager (Ford Escort) 2h33m20s 18. Rally GB’s mid-September date has also been rubberstamped, the first time it won’t host the season finale since 2005. Rally Finland runs on the first weekend in August having occupied a late July slot in recent years, while Rallye Deutschland takes place on the last weekend of August, one week later than scheduled this season. New Zealand’s all-gravel encounter is back on the schedule having missed out on a slot this season. The Aucklandbased event will take place from 22-24 June. The calendars for the FIA Production Car World Rally Championship and FIA Super 2000 World Rally Championship have also been published with both series kicking off on Rallye Monte-Carlo. Rally-Ready MINI Countryman Coming from Prodrive

P

rodrive is a British motorsport and engineering group that usually churns out the most awesome Subarus you’ve ever seen. They also took the time to chop one up and turn it into their own concept of what’s possible when it comes to four-wheel drive and boxer engines, and the P2 was nothing short of awesome. Their involvement with the World Rally Championship dates back all the way to 1990, so they are the perfect people to turn a very ‘vanilla’ car into a hot chilly sauce. Unfortunately, their exploits in the sport came to an end when partners Subaru withdrew at the end of the 2008 season, but they son turned that frown upside down with a MINI Countryman limited program that kicked of this year and will come into full swing in the 2012 season. Now, Dave Richards, the head honcho at Prodrive, has told Autocar that a road-going version of the car is also in the cards. This will offer a more muscular body, thanks to a full bodykit and some new alloys. The magic under the bonnet has taken the 1.6-liter petrol engine of the standard Cooper S and turned the ‘volume’ all the way up to 230 horsepower, with help from a new Miltek exhaust and some clever remapping. But British ECU specialists Superchips are also involved, and they are hoping to get even more out of the engine by using a bigger turbo. We just hope they carry the changes over to the three-door version of the vehicle, the upcoming Paceman. “Mini obviously has the Cooper and John Cooper Works brands and it will want to work out ways of harnessing this campaign, its rally heritage and those giant-killing acts of the 1960s through its road cars,” said Richards. 46TH RALLYE ANTIBES COTE D’AZUR TO BE HELD IN FRANCE

L

uca Rossetti and Matteo Chiarcossi, after having regained the lead in the overall standings of the European Rally Championship thanks to the points obtained in the 68th Rally of Poland, driving the Abarth Grande Punto S2000 bearing the colours of United Business, will be at the start of the 46th Rallye Antibes Cote d’Azur, which was held from October 14th to 16th in France, with start and finish in Antibes and service area in Nice. The prestigious French Rally is the penultimate round of the European Championship and Luca Rossetti with his usual co-driver Matteo Chiarcossi will race to defend, with their Abarth Grande Punto S2000, the recently reconquered championship lead. The United Business crew takes part for the second time in the French race, the first time in 2008, although they did not finish, it was in Antibes that the strong Italian driver won his first European title, now 4 years later he is confident to compete in a race

at the top. The participation in the 46th Rallye Antibes Cote d’Azur has been made possible thanks to the support of Luca Rossetti’s advertising partner companies: OMINIA ENERGY, I.L.I.R., DI VITA, DAMAPLAST and CHAMPAGNE DE VILMONT. A serene Luca Rossetti said: “ After the good result at the Rally of Poland we head for the French Riviera confident but, despite leading the Championship and as I had predicted, winning the title this year is much more difficult than in the past years and now we are in the final rush. The car has always been very competitive, the Michelin tyres are a guarantee of performance, and United Business has always provided all the technical - logistical and sporting support needed. The Rallye d’Antibes is a difficult race but right here four years ago, although I could not finish the race, I won my first international title, which was one of the

highlights of my career: winning the title of 2008 European Champion will always be an unforgettable moment. The location of this rally is very nice, I will be at the start way to honour this race and to try to amuse the French fans. As every rally abroad, the local and international competition is always very skilled and getting results is never easy, putting myself to the test on new roads, different countries and facing the French or otherwise foreign drivers for me is an exciting challenge that I hope to honour with a good performance. I would like to bring to Abarth another positive result, Matteo and I will do everything to climb on the top step of the podium with our Grande Punto”. *The FIA calendar for the continental championship, after the 46th Rallye Antibes Cote d’Azur, valid as the tenth round, foresees the Rallye International du Valais as the final round.

BOOK REVIEW Title: LAND ROVER: ‘60 Years of the 4 x 4 Workhorse‘ Author: By James Taylor Available: Local Book Shops & online

Book Review: Land Rover: 60 Years of the 4 x 4 Workhorse

T

here is a lot of turmoil in the automotive world at the moment, but this is not a new story. Many seemingly dynamic and innovative car companies have come and gone over the years, often derailed by factors outside their control. We are currently witnessing how significant changes in customer demand, growing environmental concerns, and a downturn in the economy can suck the life out of even the largest corporate entities. This makes it important to celebrate the success stories of automotive companies like Land Rover, a niche brand that is recognized around the globe. Noted Land Rover expert James Taylor’s latest effort (Land Rover: 60 Years of the 4×4 Workhorse) will become your go-to title should your interests lie with the aluminum bodied, go-anywhere vehicles that have carried

64

the Land Rover nameplate for over six decades. This hardcover book looks and feels very high-end. At first you might hesitate at the price, but once you get beyond the high-gloss dust jacket you will notice the quality of the paper, crispness of the printing and sharpness of the photos. More importantly, you will quickly recognize that this may just be the ultimate reference for information on early Land Rovers, which makes this book well worth the money. The book begins with a simple one page introduction where we learn a little about the subject matter, followed by a summation of author James Taylor’s credentials and level of expertise garnered from years of conducting research on the Land Rover brand. We are then led down a trail comprised of eighteen chapters that look at the six decade development of a vehicle that began as a whimsical drawing in the sand at a British engineer’s vacation cottage at Red Wharf Bay on the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales. Rover, like many British manufacturers at the time, was faced with stagnant car sales and out-dated designs as production and development of automobiles had been suspended during the war effort. Add to this a shortage of raw materials (due to war-time rationing) and a devastated post-war economy, and the situation was dire. Rover had to find a way to revamp its offerings to better meet the needs of its customers, at home and abroad.

Marco Simoncelli Dies in Malaysia MotoGP Crash

T

he international motorsport press is saddened, as MotoGP rider has left the world at the early age of 24, after receiving serious injuries due to a crash at the Sepang MotoGP race in Malaysia. Valentino Rossi described him as a younger brother, being obviously saddened by the loss that the racing world has suffered. Ironically enough, Sepang was also where Simoncelli suffered two preseason testing crashes last year, and the second of these even managed to crack his helmet. However, this Sunday’s crash was much serious as the injuries he sustained caused him his life. It was also here that he secured his overall victory in the 2008 250cc World Championship almost three years ago to the day. At the Malaysia race, the Italian rider was involved in a crash with Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi. He was comfortably in forth position overall when his bike slid in a corner into the path of the two. Edwards was also seriously injured, having dislocated his shoulder, But it was Simoncelli that took the heavies blow, his helmet having fallen off during the accident. The rider was immediately taken by the ambulance to the medical center, but after 45 minutes of resuscitation maneuvers, he was declared dead

MUST WATCH Title: DRIVE Available: Fox Cineplex Saarit, Westgate Rating: ***** Director: Nicolas Winding Refn

T

he Driver (Ryan Gosling) has no need for a name. He embodies his job description — a Hollywood stunt driver who moonlights as a getaway driver. Life outside of the 1973 Chevy Malibu, his vehicle of choice, is anonymous. That is, until Irene (Carey Mulligan), who lives down the hall, walks into the Driver’s life. Irene is a single mother, caring for her son while Standard (Oscar Issac of Sucker Punch) languishes in prison. But Standard is due to be out soon enough, and while Driver plays father figure for several lovely days, the quiet man embodied with moments of precise rage by Gosling will soon be thrust into an increasingly convoluted criminal scheme. His survival is improbable, leaving many grisly scenes in its wake but the Driver never slows his pace, or lets down his guard. Add this author to the quickly growing cult of Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive, a genre picture that is as unstoppable as its main character, furious and gentle in equal parts, a complete triumph of style over substance and yet not insubstantial. The Onion’s AV Club deemed it “retro genre heaven” and it’s tempting to agree — but it’s also an American thriller filtered through the mind of a European fan, the pacing distinctly Refn-esque. There is a fascination with details, like the Driver’s clothes becoming more and more blood splattered as he racks up a kill count. There is the man himself, almost mute and just a tidbit less imposing than the One Eye of Valhalla Rising. The fact that Gosling can stir up genuine tension despite his pretty-boy looks is one of this movie’s many victories. The men that come in conflict with Driver over a botched crime scheme are Bernie Rose (Albert Brooks — imagine if Hank Scorpio wasn’t a cartoon villain but a toned down career criminal) and Nino (Ron Perlman, in full-on gangster mode and granted one defining stand-out scene). Rose is the brains and Nino the muscle and yet the two are notably human, hardly caricatures or bland, faceless villains. By sheer bad luck, Rose happens to be the primary investor in a race car that Gosling would have been set to drive. Rose is bolstered by Shannon (Bryan Cranston), a permanently down-onhis-luck mechanic who owns a garage that Driver occasionally toils in between transporting criminals and crashing cars in the movies. Cranston’s Shannon is a sad-sack case who doesn’t realize he’s doomed from the on-set and a late scene with Cranston and Brooks is startlingly sad. Is it wrong to characterize Drive as an action movie? Maybe insofar as present action templates are concerned — this film is dead-set against trading silence for overwhelming noise. Refn understands the value of the moments before and after the onslaught and milks them with merciless efficiency. It serves the film better than you can imagine, aided with another excellent Cliff Martinez score, playing like a winking Tangerine Dream cover band. Evocative and exact lighting by Newton Thomas Sigel (Bryan Singer’s DP of choice) solidifies a key moment in an elevator as one of the year’s best stand-alone scenes. There’s a lot to like and love about Drive and perhaps that’s why this November 2011

review reads more like a best-of compilation than straight-forward criticism. To fall under the spell of the film is to be reminded why you love movies in the first place — in part because the films you love are ones you can watch with friends, eying their facial expressions like you’re nursing an addiction, the satisfaction of reliving the same moments that floored you through them. Drive is a film that spins a little substance into movie magic, and invites you to bask in it (while sneaking in deliriously over-the-top violence and well-executed car chases). It’s the total package; not a perfect film, but in a way an inimitable triumph — a unique coalition of director, actors, and crew. Happy Watching!! MPAA Rating: R Starring: Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Albert Brooks, Ron Pearlman, Oscar Issac, Christina Hendricks
