Classify and Sort
Description
Sorting is the process of identifying unique characteristics within a set and dividing the items based on their differences. Specific Learning Outcomes LICT Descriptors How To Do
- Provide students with selections of texts, items, or ideas. Have students work in pairs or small groups to examine texts or items and to identify and describe important characteristics. Have students sort texts or items into categories, according to common characteristics or student-generated criteria. Students name or label the categories. Have students explain their sorting by listing common characteristics of texts or items in each labeled category. Discuss and compare the student generated category names with the actual names, if

necessary. Related Information
Classifying text forms may have to be done in several stages in order for students to understand the text form, as well as the organizational pattern within the text form (e.g., main idea, supporting detail, compare and contrast, cause and effect, sequence, etc.). Concept Mapping software allows students to classify and sort information quickly and neatly.
Variations
Compare and Contrast Frame Compare and Contrast Frame Compare and Contrast List Group Label List Group Label is a reading comprehension strategy. Before reading, students list, categorize, and label personal ideas or information (on self-stick notes). Students then determine specific informational needs by identifying gaps in information and use this to read with a clear purpose. Primary students use List Group Label to retrieve and organize facts in informational text. After reading a text, students return to the text to locate important facts. The facts are recorded on cards and sorted into labeled categories. The information is used to complete oral or written reports. Venn Diagram: Venn Diagrams are circles that are used to organize ideas and show relationships (similarities and differences) between concepts/topics.
