Carousel Brainstorming

Description

Carousel Brainstorming activates students' prior knowledge of a topic or topics through movement and conversation providing scaffolding for new information to be learned in the proceeding lesson activity. Students rotate around the classroom in small groups, stopping at various stations for a designated amount of time. While at each station, students generate ideas on different topics or different aspects of a single topic through conversation with peers. Ideas are posted at each station for all groups to read. Carousel Brainstorming encourages participation and risk-taking, provides opportunities for students to share knowledge and learn from the contributions of others, and is a way to generate data collection before beginning to write, solve problems, or read.

Purposes Specific Learning Outcomes LICT Descriptors How To Do

- Introduce the topic. Divide the class into five groups and have five blank posters/sheets around the room each identified with a category of the topic. Have each group of students start at one of the posters and write down any ideas they have about that topic. Signal groups to move to the next poster. Continue signalling until all groups have visited all posters.
