Criteria Setting: Constructing Student-Generated Criteria
Description
Constructing student-generated criteria helps students to attain their goals, to self-assess, and to reflect on their work. Teachers target curricular learning outcomes to guide students in constructing criteria along a continuum toward the end-of-year learning outcomes. Students, with the guidance of their teachers, construct criteria for quality work which may include processes, demonstrations, performances, and/or products. Constructing criteria is a teaching/learning process which shows students what quality is and provides them with a tool for setting attainable learning goals, appropriate criteria for self assessment, and assessment language for supporting reflective conversations. Teachers may use these criteria for focused observations and for offering descriptive feedback that is specific to each learner as they guide them on their learning journey towards the targeted end-of-year learning outcomes.
