Numbered Heads Together
Description
Numbered Heads Together is a co-operative learning strategy where students have the opportunity to discuss the answer to a question before sharing the response with the class. This strategy encourages students to help their peers in developing answers to questions.

- 1. Small groups of students number off with each student in the group assigned a different number. One of the group members may be assigned two numbers if the groups are not equal in number. 2. Ask students a question related to the topic they are studying. 3. Students put their "heads together" in each group to discuss the answer to the question. Each member of the group checks to ensure that everyone knows the answer. Call a random number. The student from each group who is assigned that number raises their hand. Ask one or more students to answer the question. Ask if any students from other groups have anything to add to the response. Collaborative Learning link to file Discussion link to file To allow students to reflect on the question before collaborating with peers, provide "think time" before allowing students to put their heads together. Use a spinner, dice, or playing cards to select the number of the student to respond. To quicken the pace of the activity ask students to prepare their "numbered heads" response within a given timeframe.
