MONDAY

THE OTHERS

REFLECTION

RADIO C

Like it or not, the Monday class has at least the purpose to make us work for others. Interesting subject to have a hobby. Bird watching. Fossil collecting. Waow ! I had Radio Controled Vehicles.. Less enthusiastic. But in a way much more interesting, I didn’t know anything about those strange adulescents, playing with toys more precious for them than actual cars.

Well, I was quite motivated for this class, it was for me a great opportunity to work in the workshops and follow my will and my imagination. I had few sympathic ideas, not revolutionary but nice to make and allowing me to work on the pure aesthetic. Very quickly I realized that I might be wrong, I actually wasn’t here to do as I wished.. Or at least no entirely. I was more focussed on what could look nice, than what would be interesting or useful or just related to my friends the ‘‘pilots’’. I was struggling, I had two main ideas, one which was suiting perfectly to the assignment, the other just ‘‘inspired’’ by the radio controled cars. After one real size model, of the second idea, I decided that it would be more interesting for me to, at least, try to combine my will and people’s own universes. I simply modified some measurments of the first model, few angles, the materials and it was done ! This seems a bit easy said like this, but I was really annoyed by what I was doing, I didn’t like the stool I was making till it was finished. What surprised me was that, from the struggle came the satisfaction of doing something which is not only turned towards myself, something which fits to the hobby I was given, a stool connected a tiny bit functional. Making things for others, this is where I found creativity, and the result is actually very strange. I was focussing on having something super complex and agressive, very mecanical, at the end I have a tribal shield, COOL ! Honestly and a bit more seriously, I think this gave me more fulfilment than if I would have stick to my first idea. And I experienced the same with the hammer. From something very precious, I found a simple concept, quite play- and useful, that I can be proud of because it is usable and interacts with people.

This stool is made out of two wooden pieces turned, and connected together by steel tubes. It is 60 cm high when it’s open and 13 when it is closed. Complex but also very simple, it represents the contrast between the inside and the outside of the RC cars. Also, its sharp edges relate to the agressive aspects of those objects. The stool has the main purpose to enhance the movement of the user while he is playing with his controled vehicle. A piece of rubber underneath the bottom part assures the stability on the floor.

First hammer, wood and stone

HAMMER

Wood + Stone = Hammer. Simple. But I loved it ! An assignment specially made for me we could say. I used a black stone I shaped during few hours to obtain a very strong and agressive rectangle. I went to the forest with an axe and I cut a branch, shaped it directly there. Agressive, rough, smooth, contrasted. My interest was caught by the very agressive and smooth aspect of the stone and the top of the stick; with the marks left by the nail on the surface of the stone.

The ‘‘one time hammer’’ is my concept. It is a very symbolic object. The idea is to use it for the last nail of a building or a house. It connects to the meaning of achieving a project, of realizing your thoughts and will, of being concrete. The hammer is in oak and tin. Very simple and sleek shape, extremely heavy. The purpose is to create a kind of awareness by the weight as well as a feeling of preciosity. Furthermore, thanks to the softness of the tin, the nail will leave singular marks on the hitting part of the hammer. It is an object you will use only once and keep as a symbol of your achievement.
