As world retreats from nuclear power, Russia pushes fast reactors
On August 17, 2016, Unit 4 of the Beloyarsk nuclear power plant with BN-800 fast neutron reactor, which should become the most powerful prototype of the commercial reactors of this type, started operating at 100% power for the first time. In 1979, President Jimmy Carter issued a statement stopping development of the Clinch River Fast Breeder Reactor. In 1993, President Clinton issued a statement saying that the United States does not encourage the civil use of plutonium and, accordingly, does not itself engage in plutonium reprocessing for either nuclear power or nuclear explosive purposes. This essentially stopped fast reactors development in the USA, for the time being. Russia and China are pushing ahead with this most important technology. Page 1
